One other advantage, recombination caps wear out. We have had Water Miser caps
returned (during upgrade to AGM’s) that are over 10 years old. By washing in
baking soda and water, thoroughly rinsing, they continue working. Should last
decades.

Water Miser caps use plastic beads to condense moisture. No recombination takes
place. No exothermic process thus no heat is generated.

Kirpal,
You state that the Rolls 5000 series come standard with recombiner caps.
Just installed a set of 4ks25p yesterday and the caps haven't changed that
I noticed. I've been using the Hydro caps for about 15 years now and all my
clients including the ones we use here at our office/shop only require
water every 6 months. We reinstall the original caps during EQ. I am
looking to try out the Rolls caps one of these days though.

The problem with recombination style caps is they require using a low absorb

[RE-wrenches] Strategies for hurricane resistant solar arrays?

2016-10-13 Thread Darren Anderson
In light of Hurricane Matthew and the loss of some of our PV systems on South
Coast of Haiti (despite being designed for 120 - 150mph winds), I’d be
interested to hear of any strategies being used for making hurricane-resistant
solar arrays. The maximum wind speed that most commercially available racking
systems seem to provide is 130 – 150mph, but in many cases it seems the racking
survives okay anyway while the glass is blown right out of the module frames.

Are there any modules rated for higher than 2400 Pascals of wind loading (which
seems to be the norm)? I recall seeing a Mitsubishi module a few years back
that had an additional frame member running across the back of the module.
Would that provide extra wind load protection?

Would using small solar modules with less surface area be a useful strategy?
(We typically use standard 60-cell modules.)

Can some sort of wind break or shield be designed into the frame to take the
wind load off the solar modules themselves? (Many of our systems are on
tilt-frames on flat concrete roofs so that back of the array is exposed.)

Any thoughts/advice/experience in this area would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Kirpal, my clients tell me they work to approximately double the battery
watering interval time. I buy them direct from Watermiser.

Re: [RE-wrenches] GSLC work-arounds

2016-10-13 Thread Kevin Pegg
Thanks.

I don't know exactly the reasons for the comm cable shielding, as that happened
after my main involvement. I do know during initial product testing with the
earliest firmware there was challenges with keeping Xanbus communication
network stable in the noisy RF environments inverters live in. Subsequent
firmware updates improved that dramatically.

HI Kevin,

Many thanks. The PDP is the best box out there.
Easy to work in. Will handle 4 CC, 3 inverters.
And as many have requested it uses large Airpax breakers for the DC and QOU for
the AC.

One question on that, what was the thinking about having to put the comm cable
in the shielded trays?
No one else does that?

Thanks

I am a big fan of the Schneider XW system, and the XW Power Distribution Panel.
Full disclosure - I helped design it. The original design was this tiny cramped
thing and all of us in the design advisory team said 'make it big'. We
generally go with external bypass assemblies for configurations more than 2
inverters, using a more conventional manual transfer switch.

SMA deployments, when coupled with the Multi-Cluster enclosure and some sheet
metal trays works quite well. I've not yet used Midnite's solution for SMA
inverter installs.

Kevin:

I am curious, what brand would you prefer over the Radian that has wiring
cabinet design that is “safe and easy to work on”?

I hope everyone understands I generally like the GSLC and the Radian line. The
Radian BOS available is superior to that of most other brands, the Sunny Island
line, for example, which has no BOS at all. With some intelligent design and a
few tips and tricks, the Radian can make a very nice install.

William

PS: I am increasingly excited to try the Midnite MNDC15. Although it has the
same problem with back-wired breakers, it allows one to move all PV disconnects
to a point adjacent to the charge controllers. This removes the last breaker
froth GSLC other than the inverter breakers.

Thank you very much for sharing this. Reinforces my avoidance of the Outback
Radian line. Given there are other products on the market that perform the same
functions, with the added bonus of wiring cabinet design that is actually safe
and easy to work on without many hrs of re-design work, I don't see any
advantages to this product line.

Friends:

We resolved our web authoring problem and threw together a little page to
illustrate some of the issues we have with the GSLC. If anyone is interested,
direct your browser to:

http://www.millersolar.com/MillerSolar/case_studies/GSLC/GSLC.html

I hope the time and effort I put into these web pages is helpful to someone out
there. I always try to give back to the industry by sharing some of my trade
secrets.

Sincerely,

William

We supply them to all our clients in the Bahamas and they do help cut down
on watering to various degrees. In hot climates with a lot of sun every
little bit helps.
Call Roy at RAE Storage Battery to see if he can get you some. (860)828-6007

Has anyone used the Rolls Surrette recombiner caps for their series 4000
batteries? They come standard on the series 5000 batteries Any ideas where
to source them? None of our battery suppliers we get Rolls batteries from
seem to have them.
We have used water miser caps in the past, they seem to have only moderate
resultssome customers seem to think they help with minimizing
electrolyte loss and some thinking they dont help at all.Any thoughts?
