[RE-wrenches] Rapid Shutdown, was Re: [RE-outback skybox)

For Rapid Shutdown, I started using Midnite's BOS system, it can be set 
up on a string level or module level (2019) with enough receivers.  
While it doesn't work with most charge controllers right now, it does 
work with the Magnum PT100 oddly enough.  We haven't had any glitches, 
the RS worked with very little fanfare. My biggest peeve is that the 
transmitter either runs on 120 vac or 12 vdc, so we set up a DC to DC 
converter.  Midnite really needs 24 v and 48 v versions of the 
transmitter. I don't want to use 120 vac, because then array charging 
becomes dependent on inverter operation.  If the inverter shuts down due 
to low battery, you're back into the battery death spiral problem 
inherent to AC coupled systems.

Jay,

I haven't used it but the surge load capacities are really pathetic. It also 
doesn't support stacking so if you need more backup power, then at least for 
now, you're out of luck. (I don't know if they have plans to add stacking 
support or not.) I would say that it is really only for grid-tied systems (no 
off-grid) with low to moderately low backup needs.

As to your specific questions...

No, it does not require any external interface. It can be programmed directly 
from the integrated screen and it connects directly to the internet without any 
external devices. I believe you still need an external router if you want to 
connect it to wi-fi. I don't think it even could be used with a Mate 3 (or Mate 
3s).

I'm not quite sure on the Rapid Shut Down. I am quite sure that they have a 
compatible Rapid Shut Down solution that will suffice for about 1 month and 7 
days but after 2019. I'm not quite sure what 
we'll do... If anyone else can answer this question, that would be awesome!

Is it possible that there was a lightning strike nearby, and the light 
flash created the high max power readings?    I'm calculating almost 
1400 w/ m2, (3075/2205 x 1000 w/M2) which is high, but not insanely 
high.  They used to use flash testing to rate modules, so a fairly 
instantaneous flash can do it.

I’m a huge fan of equalizing AGM batteries often. Some mfg. forbid it; some 
recommend it for corrective procedure for lost capacity. From 16 years of 
simple observation and thousands of battery systems installed, customers that 
equalize AGM’s are getting much longer battery life compared to charging to 
Mfg. specs. only. 

A short EQ of 30 minutes after absorption is complete seems to be key. If the 
battery is healthy, current is extremely low at the end of Absorb. Applying 2.6 
Vpc, the current rises for a short time then drops back very low. There is not 
enough current or time to create heat or pressure to release moisture. 

The EQ cycle we recommend is every 10 days or less frequently. One customer 
that equalizes daily is at 13 years on a set of Lifeline (Concorde) GPL-4CT 
batteries. Others are at 10-12 years. Customers that do not EQ seem to get 4-6 
years. 

This is all anecdotal but having some understanding what is happening in the 
electrochemical process makes me a believer. Through charging and discharging, 
some less active areas of the plates retain unconverted lead sulphate after 
normal charging. These areas of sulfate continue to grow in hardness and size 
with each cycle and eventually form a layer with strong bonds that can't be 
removed through normal charging. Once this process starts (perhaps within 30 
days!), these bonds continue to increase. My belief is that by applying a 
temporary high voltage after most PbSO4 has been recombined, these areas are 
targeted for recombination. Slowing the growth of irreversible sulfation
