[RE-wrenches] Lithium batteries

2019-05-03 Thread Jason Andrade

Howie,
I’ve used a few different brands and am currently using the Discover AES, I
have a quad stack of the coupled to an dual stack of XW inverters and they are
working great,
As for another post comment that these companies are looking to be bought out,
Discover is long time battery manufacturer and I feel pretty confident they
will be here to honor the warranty.
If you search YouTube you can see a video Discover and I did on my wood shop.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Aquion Batteries

2019-01-24 Thread Jason Andrade
As for the Simpliphi I have them in a few projects one being Governor Browns
offgrid home and my own off-grid residence is powered using them.
I recently re-engineered the Outback IBR3 for the phi 3.5 and made an advanced
version for my own. I purchased a flexnet battery monitor and used all three
channels for the IBR I have a spare Flexmax80 that powers a hub 4 and a second
mate 3. You are able to aggregate this data into optics and overlay the two.
I’ll admit I haven’t had a lot of time to tweak with it but I think you can see
it as an optics preview through outback.

I agree data on the Lifpo4 is critical and my understanding is Simpliphi will
be releasing a version soon that has comms.

I also have a Discover AES bank on my off grid woodshop consisting of 4 of the
6.5 coupled with three of the older xantrex xw inverters this is a great
platform so far and you can see the battery as a device on the scp, you can
also direct connect using a usb to usb cable to the battery and upload firmware
and see the battery specifics

Re: [RE-wrenches] Ibew is working to exclude C-46 contractor?s from installing Batteries.

2018-03-26 Thread Jason Andrade
Ultimately I think handing off ESS just to the C-10 is unjust and if its a real
concern they should make it a separate classification, I have a C46 and the ESS
project that I just completed for Governor Brown’s off grid ranch was what I
feel is top notch work that shows a C46 can hang with the C10 :)

installing Batteries.

As a C46 since 2011 I'll contend that though the license may have its origins
in thermal, according to the CSLB the designation is for both thermal and PV,
and that is reflected in the licensure exam (to be licensed as a C46 one must
be familiar with PV). What one does in their profession, whether ST or PV or
both, after passing the exam and becoming licensed, is up to the contractor. I
for one have done little ST over the past 7 years, and as a result of my PV
work, have more battery experience than my C10 peers - speaking only for the
C10s with whom I work and those I know. If the CSLB decides that batteries are
the domain of C10 contractors and not solar electrical contractors, which would
be erroneous IMHO - being not reflective of the reality of many C46 contractors
today, some whom have been in BBU as long as BBU has been in solar, then I
imagine the C46 holders that do BBU work will seek to add the C10 license, as
would I. Until then, I will join CalSSA in advocating for the s
tatus quo.

Thanks for sharing, Jason. Peter, you can reach me through Byers Solar, we're a
CalSSA member and C46 contractor (under my license).___

[RE-wrenches] Ibew is working to exclude C-46 contractor’s from installing Batteries.

2018-03-23 Thread Jason Andrade
Hi at this point I believe this is a California only issue, but I was contacted
by CalSeia today and was asked to be involved in a discussion regarding a move
where only a C-10 contractor can install a battery based system
This was news to me but they sent me a pdf outlining the issue and I will read
it over this weekend has anyone else heard about this?
My instant response is what special training does the c10 have that the c46
doesn’t ?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Grundfos SQflex

2016-07-02 Thread Jason Andrade
I have this same situation with my off grid well, I have a grundfos sqf5-2
and the yield wound up being .25 gpm. Originally I ran it on 2- Astronergy
235 and made a timing system using a sprinkler timer and a midnite kid
controller it was tough to control the production as the power varied and
was limited to daylight hours. I ran ac power to the control box and now
use a simple AC wall (pump draw is 400 watts) timer that up to seven daily
cycles and control the pump times calculated on the recapture rate of the
well which varies with the water table. I also use inline water gauges to
help determine the amount of water I can pump per cycle because the amount
drops so much in the summer. I went with the controlled time method over
restriction as it was going to have to be extreme in my situation, there is
a product out there I read about the dole valve that can regulate the
production to 1GPM http://www.pumpsandwells.com/mm5/PDFs/Dole%20Valves.pdf
without messing with the power directly.

[RE-wrenches] New Pge TOU rates

2016-06-21 Thread Jason Andrade
Hi Wrenches,

I am looking at the new rates for PG&E's time of use and was wondering what
others in California are using Tou-A or Tou-B? it looks like if you have a
West facing array Tou-B is going to be the better choice if you can control
your usages.

I have had Powerfab build custom enclosures for me in the past but I really
like the HDPE enclosures from radiantsolartech.com they are safe and
constructed well. I prefer stacked battery racks myself and am building a
custom one now for my personal off grid system,

This will be a completely enclosed and vented cabinet with HDPE trays for
acid containment.
My question is has the inspector mentioned grounding it and what size EGC
will you be using?

Figured I would dig through the responses to this list topic since I posted
it as a poll, of sorts.

My final count was: 10 votes to flash, 4 votes not to flash.

Those who read all the responses probably know there are a few on either
side that would be OK with the other option.

I?m still on the flashing side of things, though I might consider letting
the client have a choice. If I explain the differences, and show them the $
difference, they can help make the decision (read that as? ?take some
liability off of me J?). We do that now with US vs non-us made solar
modules. It?s not the same type of comparison here, but at least if the
client really wants a lower cost, they know how they?re getting it, and
future calls from the client should get tempered by the knowledge that they
chose the attachment method.

Some really good points were raised on this topic, thanks to everyone who
participated.

Although my mind is kinda' made up, this thread has really got me thinking
and researching. I scoured the NRCA manual, which does not really define
"penetration," but it does say in the shingle manual:

"Penetration Flashings: There are many small penetrations that need to be
flashed into asphalt shingle roof

systems, such as vent pipes, exhaust vents, exhaust fans, furnace or water
heater flue pipes, electrical standpipes and others."

There is also a graphical figure showing these various penetrations. The one
thing these all have in common is that there is a substantial air gap cut
fully through the roof plane.

It occurred to me that ridge caps and vents on shingle roofs use exposed
fasteners to nail or screw them to the decking. The NRCA manual says about
this:

"Exposed fasteners should be sealed with elastomeric sealant or asphalt roof
cement on the last ridge piece of a run, at the intersection of hips to a
ridge and at the intersection of a ridge to another plane."

Also read the Snow Guard section for metal roofs, which allows attachments
sealed to the flat part of the roof pan with sealants.

Until the manual specifically addressed the solar "attachments" and
"fasteners" we are debating about, it's open to interpretation.

Re: [RE-wrenches] 208 3 phase Off Grid Inverter

2014-03-25 Thread Jason Andrade
By using the Magic stacking on the Outback I thought you could parallel more
than one inverter per phase in three phase mode, I have heard of reactivity
issues with this while attached to 3 phase condenser units I would suggest
contacting tech on this.

This would be a though call for me I would probably go with the Sunny
Islands AC coupled myself I have some great systems out there using the SI
equipment.

Jason

Hi All;

I'm exploring options for an off grid project with an existing 30 Kw Kohler
wired for 208 vac 3 phase. The generator runs some 8 hp air compressors, so
rewiring it is not an option. We're primarily interested in reducing gen
run time from the current situation: 14 hrs/ day.
So far, only the Outback VFX inverters seem capable of being wired in 208, 3
phase, but according to the manual they can only be stacked 1 inverter per
leg. This limits the system to only 3 inverters total, or
10.8 kW. I would like expandability beyond this.
1) are there any other inverters available that I'm over looking?
2) Should I consider a transformer to convert from 208 vac/3phase to 240
vac/ singe phase?

We're not going to even try to run the compressors, just the other single
phase loads, mostly 120 vac, but we have a couple of small air conditioners,
that are currently running on 208 single phase. I believe they would run
fine on 240 vac, as they have a name plate rating at 230 vac.
3) We may possibly run 2 separate 3 inverter stacks and only tie together at
the battery, but otherwise they would not be connected. This seems
inefficient, and would require some load balancing of the various inverters.

All help and discussion is greatly appreciated as always,

wired for 208 vac 3 phase.

This seems
inefficien

Ron,

The one I have is a beta to play with, I think they are scheduled to release
very soon. I put together some quick connects this weekend and am waiting
for the rain so I can hook it up to a hydro next. Woo hoo

The Midnite Kid looks like the ticket but didn't realize it was shipping
yet. I like the Classics so if the Kid is a chip off the old block then I'll
go with it for sure.

but I am a Midnite user and it is what you would expect from Midnite. I am
going to try the Whizbanger on the classic as it is what charges the

Hello Wrenches:

We have a customer who's got one of the Excel One wind gennies, and he's
burnt up two Classic controllers (overvoltagethe 2nd time it got over
400V before it burnt up). Bergey's been dragging their feet as to why this
is happening; they're saying it's probably an "upslope site" where the RPM
just gets too high, among other things. Metering tests prove that the
stator is OK.

They also said that Midnite Solar has a 'clipper' to prevent overvoltage; do
any of you have any experience with this device? It's ~$1200, and of course
there is no mention of this on Bergey's web site or in their XL.1 manual.

I have several other XL.1s in the general area, but they are on their old
24V controller. So I am looking for more information on anyone who's using
this 'clipper'.

Please feel free to contact me off list.

Thanks!

We've done some research on this, as we're doing an XL.1 project at 12 v
right now.
I don't have first hand experience with the Clipper yet, but I have over
a decade of XL.1 experience and many years with Midnite's electronics.
The Clipper is exactly what is needed. It also moves the rectifier down
to the ground, and offers a braking disconnect system to shut the
turbine down completely if needed.
The Classic by itself isn't really controlling the turbine speed, and
counting on the XL,1 mechanical governing design by itself is definitely
full hardy.
Unfortunately, Bergey's new staff is not really up to full speed yet on
what is needed to make their turbines work long term. At least they've
abandoned the old XL.1 controller. Hopefully the turbine itself hasn't
changed too much; I've seen them survive some very high speed winds and
direct lightning strikes.

2014-02-16 Thread Jason Andrade
If you can get the serial number off the generator for me I can access kohler
and get some info as a kohler dealer. The new ones are having controller issues
and there is an updated controller. When meeting with the generator tech ask
them if they transferred the setting from the previous controller with site
tech.
One last silly question, your not feeding 12vdc to wires 3&4 for the start

[RE-wrenches] Ungrounded P.V.

2014-02-14 Thread Jason Andrade
Wrenches,

I have yet to do a Transformer-less inverter and am understanding that they
are an ungrounded system and that both the positive and negative of each
string will need to be disconnected. I started with the sma SB series and
now find myself using mainly Enphase. The SMA TL dual mppt lighter weight
inverter has my attention, especially with AB327 Knocking on the door but
that's another topic.

[RE-wrenches] Subject: Re: Best Ground Racking?

2014-02-06 Thread Jason Andrade

Racking:

I used Prosolar for a long time and then switched to Iron ridge, I am pretty
happy with it in all areas but the rails are pricy.

Things I like
-It has minimal deflection when tightening, but you have to tighten the
Ubolts evenly.
-The new mid clamps have teeth that penetrate both the module and the
racking so you do not need weebs for module grounding.
-End caps for sealing the rails are cheap.
-It has slots like uni-rack that allows for a decent amount of adjustment.
-As for wire management, there are two types of stainless rail clips for
managing enphase size cable or attaching up to four pv wires on
parallel rail runs.
-When using central inverters I run all of my inverter to module cables in
emt-heyco stain reliefs to MC connectors this turns out extremely tidy
-For the grounding I use a weeb grounding lug that sits in the top rail with
a 7/16 stainless bolt that allows for a strong connection.

Things that do make it tedious
there are a lot of stainless bolts, I use pentrox as a anti galling
compound, what do other people use?

when installing a micro inverter system you have to get all of your inverter
mounting bolts in place before installing the cabling, they have to be end
loaded, I would prefer and bolt similar to the mids that twists and locks
in.

If you would like a few pictures I can send them to you or you can see them
on our facebook page West Coast Sustainables

Connection through concrete and soon tubes. The horizontal main support tube
(4 x 4 square tube) makes wire management easy. It can easily hold wire
gutters, j boxes and conduit runs. Typically I will run the home runs in
free air and into a wire gutter mounted on the 4x4 horizontal tube. Then
conduit down to the bos equipment mounted on a vertical support pole.
