Re: [RE-wrenches] Schneider Phone Support

2019-01-09 Thread glenn.b...@glbcc.com
We tried to use their phone support yesterday from an off grid site whose
system was down and were directed to their online support services as well. Not
happy with the results and wasted man hours that ensued as the tech had to
complete online applications while in questionable cell coverage area. Then
wait for confirming email. The day was done before we were able to move forward.

Phone Support
Hello Wrenches,
Does Schneider phone support still exist? I filled out an on line form, as a
professional, to be able to get phone support. Schneider sent me an email with
two numbers to call, and neither of them worked. One did not connect to
anything and the other gave me the original message saying to fill out the form
for tech support.
Using their on-line support has been limited in its usefulness, with a lot of
runaround. No one there will answer any questions about phone support
availability.
The timing of this is interesting, as I was on the verge of using Schneider as
my go-to brand for battery based equipment. . One Wrench posting from a while
back that stuck in my head was, "before buying equipment, call their tech
support to see how good it is."

Does anyone know if phone support still exists?
Thank you,
Drake

We are working with Turning Point Foundation a 501(c)3 to provide off-grid
power for their River Haven project which is providing transitional housing for
homeless folks in the Ventura CA area. The site is truly off-grid and currently
uses propane to power three refrigerators and cook stoves. There is no space
heating for the single occupancy rooms as of yet. But that’s another problem.
We are looking to specify DC refrigerators and PV-powered battery storage for
the River Haven project. We are looking at the Goal Zero Yeti-3000 system (3000
Whr, 500 full discharge cycles, to 80% residual capacity) at a sale price of
$2,400 but are finding the extra cost of their PV modules quite steep. And
looking at other 36-cell (12 volt) modules, I can’t find anything for less than
$1.10/W.  Since Goal Zero is looking at the recreational market, I thought that
there might be other companies with comparable product offerings that are
focusing on other markets like developing countries. Any
advice would be appreciated and you may contact us off-line. Peter T. Parrish

Does anyone know where I might find a relay / contactor with a 48V DC coil and
50 A 120/240 Vac contacts. Among the many suppliers I've contacted are
Grainger, Digi-Key, Mouser, the WWW, etc. The system I've ended up designing
with what I have found is a kluge to just have a Morning Star Relay Driver
disconnect the output of an inverter.. AC coupling 48 V inverters seems to
always have the glitch of finding a relay.

Catalogues will show these, but suppliers don't have them.

Thank you,

Sierra wrenches,

My 30 years of installation has never included comm sites
on mountain tops but I took the job.

I am proposing mounting PVs vertically towards the top of the south wall
of a 2 story block building to avoid snow build-up.  I assume a
pole-mount would be next in line if we needed more sq ft of PV.
However, even if vertical, will Sierra snow (its a special breed) still
wind-pack on, stay for weeks, days, not at all?  This site is on the
Pacific crest at 7,000 ft.

And then  due to potential temps down to -30F, I assume a
WELL insulated battery box (maybe even back-up heat?). It seems the best
choice would be to use AGM/VRLA/Gel?    Part my reason for looking for
help is my customer's loads will only be 12 volt and wants to avoid the
cost of an inverter.  This seems a little risky not to have an
inverter/charger for back-up. Appreciate the advice.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Neutral sizing

2018-09-23 Thread glenn.b...@glbcc.com
Ooh, be careful with the neutral-less inverter choice.I am pretty sure that if
the service has a neutral, you must use an inverter that has one as well, per
codes.I don't have the article in front of me, however a few years back it was
common to install inverters without a neutral, then a new code cycle was
adopted and every one had to use a neutral. We had a few that failed and had to
pull a neutral to install the replacements.

Hi Jay,

Is this for an inverted output circuit? If so then I think the NEC reference
you’re looking for is 705.95(B). That says you can size the neutral to the
same size as the EGC if the neutral is used only for instrumentation, voltage
detection or phase detection.

A number of single phase inverters these days do not require a neutral at all,
so if the AHJ will not accept downsizing it may be worth changing inverters.

Hi Mac,
A while back the magazine QST which is published by the Amateur Radio Relay
League had an article written by a ham detailing his experience in quieting a

with a substantial number of toroidal chokes on most conductors if I recall.
Sounded labor intensive and definately not free.

Hi Wrenches,
I've got a proposal out there for about a 11.5 kW grid-tied system.  We are
planning on using Enphase IQ 7+ inverters.  Quick question, this guy has a
pretty large Ham Radio setup operating at 3-30 MHz.  He has a directional
antennae that can push 1500W sometimes.  Has anyone had any issues with Ham
radio problems with these inverters?  With either the radio setup or the
inverter?
He asked me if it would be an issue and I told him I'd look into it.  I will
contact enphase as well.
Thanks

This YouTube guy has experimented with using Eternabond to tape down the

A great many RV rooftops are not fiberglass, but a rubber membrane with thin

Hi All

What are good options for a portable module for RV use.
One that you can move around, (it’s going to fall over)and connect with a cable
to an camper.

The old unisolar ones were perfect.

Any recommendations are appreciated
Size? 50-100 watts, 12v nominal.

Thx
Jay.

Do you feel that these are different from the microfractures or snail trails

Hi All;

I've had a colleague ask that I post a couple pictures of what appears
to be cracks in cells under the glass.  The glass is not damaged.  These
are Sun Edison modules, so apparently no warranty.  Has anyone seen
this, and are these possibly dangerous (hot spots) or is this nothing to
worry about?  An Infrared camera did not show any issues.

As always your invaluable input is always appreciated.

Thanks,

I have a client who
needs a monitoring system for a 48V nominal NiCad battery bank
on a boat. It's 4 parallel strings of 6V batteries. (Not ideal,
I know) It's a passenger boat in Canada so all electrical
devices need to be UL/CSA listed. None of the Bogart Engineering
monitors are listed.
Any suggestions
appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello Wrenches,What are you all seeing required as setbacks post 2017?  I am
having inspectors vary between wanting a 3' lane at the bottom and sides to
allowing the array down to the gutter, and from requiring between 18" and 3' at
the ridge.

Re: [RE-wrenches] grounding on metal roofs

2018-06-17 Thread glenn.b...@glbcc.com
Depends on the seam profile. Same device may be used in many cases. We have
Also drilled and used the standard direct burial lugs on the underside of the
pans, at the wave when they hang over enough to get working space. Then a
horizontal run of copper wire to connect.
Don't be lulled into thinking that S-5 clamps are listed for grounding roof
pans - they are not. They are only listed for module bonding to ground.
