The Drone Deploy processing is expensive and time-consuming, so it's only
suitable for larger projects with a healthy budget or opportunity. I don't
think the technology is really there yet for our purposes for residential
solar site analysis. I imagine we are heading in that direction, though.

Jason,

Would you be willing to share what Drone and software package you use for
performing an aerial analysis? We've been thinking of this as an option for
the initial site visit instead of putting a body on the roof (ie mitigating
risk without sacrificing accuracy).

Thank you,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Array Mock-up Software

2017-10-28 Thread Jason Szumlanski
There are many different levels of "sales presentations" we do depending on
the viability of the project. If it's a garden variety interest in solar,
we create a layout that anticipates the quantity of modules that will fit
on the roof in either 2D or 3D. For the everyday sales lead, we just need
scaled imagery with good resolution and a reasonably accurate roof pitch to
get incredibly accurate layouts, even when obstructions exist. That is what
we have lost with Sketchup's Add Location feature going to poor quality
imagery. Sending someone to the site is obviously the Holy Grail in terms
of accurate system sizing, but it's also expensive. In my mind, there is no
substitute for super clear, scaled, plan view imagery. You can do so much
with that. The drive toward 3D computer simulated imagery by major data
providers is pushing the envelope of technology but doesn't necessarily
satisfy the need for accurate solar layouts nor producing great sales
presentations showing superimposed renovations (yet).

On the other end of the spectrum, we can do a 3D survey of the building
using a drone and then superimpose solar panels on the building like the
attached picture. This is super precise. This is clearly more expensive
than a ladder and a tape measure, but the value in terms of sales
presentations is tremendous.

Mick's reply: The Unirac racking design tool:
http://design.unirac.com/tool/ incorporates "augmented reality"
features as you described, Chad. There is a learning curve but the tool is
free & it can also generate a bill of materials for Unirac brand mounting
hardware. Typing in the project location kicks up a satellite photo image
as the bottom layer; I prefer using the touch screen on my notebook to zoom
& move the satellite image. Next, the user draws rectangles or other shapes
to define the "roof boundaries'; the "Clear All" button is handy if one
needs a reset.

When it's time to "Draw Panels" (sic) as the next layer, one should first
specify the tilt of the roof. Since the visual always shows everything as
it would look from a satellite, the drawn PV modules are dimensioned
differently depending on the specified roof tilt. To me, the "Roof Edge
Autofill" feature is too aggressive at holding the array field back from
the edges of the roof--but one can cheat that in various ways or turn it
off.

The tool can only accommodate standard "jumbos" so far, but did I mention
it's free? Power-Fab (aka Direct Power aka Pre-formed Line Products) I hope
this will be helpful information. The Wrench List is the Bomb!

Libre office is a free open source office suite software that that comes
with a drawing program. I like to use it in conjunction with Libre CAD and
Google Earth. We have run into problems with larger files but for creating
layouts with scaled proportion it works pretty well.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Array Mock-up Software

2017-10-26 Thread Glenn Burt
We have never used it like that. We measure a structure, then build a model of
it, place it on a map, and wrap the house around the structure. It is more for
helping a customer visualize the result with solar on their home than for
performing measurements.
We also use it the same way to pass on to the crew where conduit and BOS
equipment go, and in many cases, fit before they arrive on site.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Array Mock-up Software

2017-10-26 Thread Glenn Burt
Jason,
Like others, we too have found the image quality lacking, however for the
simple quotes we do, it has been more bonus to have the imagery than simply the
dwelling mock-up as part of the proposal.

Glenn,

How are you dealing with the new inferior imagery from Digital Globe now that
Sketchup's contract with Google for imagery is dead? In my area, it's totally
unusable. I'm having to pull in imagery from other sources and scale it, which
is not as accurate as the Add Location feature in Sketchup.

Unfortunately, it's not a simple contractual issue. Google has taken way
its API that allowed this kind of integration and they don't plan to revive
it.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Array Mock-up Software

2017-10-26 Thread August Goers
Hi Chad -

We've been using Solar Census which has some very nice features for sales
reps. It is fast and easy to use - a layout can typically be created in
about 15 minutes. It uses LIDAR data to calculate the pitch of the roof and
estimate shade and we've found it to be generally quite accurate. I think
it has a limited geography or where it works, so it may not be available in
your area. The layout is nice to share with clients and shows them shade on
a per module basis. Here is a sample:

We also have a subscription to nearmap which is like Google Earth but much
more up to date and higher resolution. It can really help get accurate roof
measurements.

I know that Solarcity (now Tesla) uses EagleView, but we haven't tried it:

2017-10-26 Thread Wayne Irwin

We still use sketch-up.

But we are also struggling with the poor imagery and having to pull images from
other sources.

We are looking for alternatives to sketch up unless they renew their contract

Re: [RE-wrenches] Array Mock-up Software

2017-10-26 Thread Jason Szumlanski
Glenn,

How are you dealing with the new inferior imagery from Digital Globe now
that Sketchup's contract with Google for imagery is dead? In my area, it's
totally unusable. I'm having to pull in imagery from other sources and
scale it, which is not as accurate as the Add Location feature in Sketchup.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Array Mock-up Software

2017-10-25 Thread William Miller
Chad:

I am the "salesman" (and designer, and bookkeeper, etc.) for my small
solar contracting firm. I recently bid a few jobs without actually
getting on the roof. Big mistake.

I hate competing against companies that do a "virtual", low-ball bid and
then, once the customer is on the hook, present "adders" to overcome their
lack of due diligence in the bidding process. Nothing replaces getting an
experienced professional on the roof.

Quantity is no replacement for quality. Buyer beware!

Wrenches,

Wondering what you folks are using for array mock-ups in your proposal
tools. Since Bright Harvestıs array-o-metic went black, weıve tried Aurora
and Helioscope, but they seem to be too time consuming and functionally
more than what we need. All weıre looking to do is place some simulated
modules on a satellite photo with a program that is simple enough for a
salesman to use. Any input is appreciated.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Array Mock-up Software

2017-10-25 Thread Jason Szumlanski
Haha - "simple enough for a salesperson." *Giggle*

No offense to the dark art of salesmanship, but I've given up on that.
Hiring someone to prepare sales presentations seems like the right option
if you have enough demand, as long as they can turn presentations around
quickly. I'm still cranking out 1000+ presentations a year with Sketchup
myself, but it results in a lot of late nights. Since Sketchup butchered
their location import feature it has become pretty cumbersome for a novice
to use. However, this is a trainable thing for a tech savvy admin. I still
think it's the best tool out there for quick and accurate sizing/layout,
and you can make it simple or feature rich with SU Pro.

There is no silver bullet, but training an army of sales reps to use a CAD
/ 3D / 2D / presentation tool and accurately lay out solar panels on a roof
is my worst nightmare. There are too many nuances to sizing roofs, dealing
with setbacks and obstructions, and dealing with skew in aerial imagery. A
single person dedicated to this task seems much more plausible.
