Re: [RE-wrenches] TIny House Pump (Dan Fink)

2016-10-31 Thread Jeff Clearwater
Hi Windy and all

Great to see you chime in here Windy -it's been many years!

I have a customer off grid in the Caribbean with a 230V 50 hz Radian. Is there
any equivalent to the Flowlight Booster Pump for 50hz? Any Positive
Displacement pressurizing pumps for 50hz?

Thanks!

I agree with Dan that the Shurflo is a viable approach. I have used them many
times when either budget or silty water made Flowlight Booster Pump out of the
question. I would add a bit more advice to get the best results:

1. Pressure tank, absolutely and it can’t be too big. Shurlo plastic tank is
tiny. For same $ you can get a larger steel one. Install a pressure gauge. Be
SURE to set the air pre-charge according to instructions after observing pump
pressure range.
2. Standard AC pressure switch can be used, and it will last forever.
3. For the OUTLET pipe from the Shurflo, use 1/2 or 3/4” braided vinyl tube,
from any hardware store - with barb fittings. Use about a 7 foot length, rolled
up if necessary. It will damp the pulsations very effectively. Pump will last
longer, and there won’t be noise through the pipes. I use flex on the intake
too, to make installation and service easy. No need to make it long for damping.

Re: [RE-wrenches] TIny House Pump

2016-10-29 Thread Dan Fink
I have had very few reliability issues with the Shurflo 2088 series, and
have a dozen of them in the field for clients in 12V, 24V and 120VAC. My
house is full-time, as is my guest cabin, both have 2, one 12V for house
pressure and one 120VAC underground for filling the cisterns from springs.

The diaphragm pump head is easy to rebuild or replace, as is the pressure
switch. I've only had to do that once at my house, after 15 years of
service.

I recommend the heat sink version at 12V, that can be a failure point if
run time is extended. Other failure point - lightning with the underground
spring pumps.

ALWAYS use a pressure tank, even if it's just the little Shurflo one,
otherwise they surge and pulse, which will reduce motor lifetime
drastically.

Boats have small pressure switched potable water pumps running on DC. The
pumps from manufacturers like Jabsco last for a long time and can be
rebuilt.

Yes, I've definitely used the Dankoff Flolight before. I've seen them
last over 15 years. Cost is higher than the Grundfos though.
I'm dreaming of something in the $200 - $300 range. Basically a really
beefed up Shurflo, or dumbed down Grundfos MQ.

[RE-wrenches] TIny House Pump

2016-10-28 Thread Ray Walters

Greetings Esteemed Wrenches:

We have a tiny house project, and need to supply the pressure pump. My
go to pump has been the Grundfos MQ series of constant pressure pumps.
They have no start up surge, and don't require an external pressure
switch or pressure tank. For small part time cabins, we've used the
Shurflo or Aquatec diapraghm pumps.
In this case, I fee that the Grundfos is overkill at 10 GPM, and that
the RV pumps won't last very long in full time use. Any other choices
