Re: [RE-wrenches] Vertical wall, shared rails

Depending on your access, something as simple as a water level could work.
Garden hoses with clear sections of tubing at each end would transfer the line
a good distance.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Vertical wall, shared rails

Hello Wrenches,
Wondering if any of you have ever done anything similar to installing on a
vertical wall using a horizontal shared rail racking system, array being
about 32.8m (110') wide and 26.3m (86') tall

The rails obviously have to be exactly perpendicular the entire length so
we are taking extra care that the first row (top row) is true and using
template spacers for each row down. Only problem is that the top of the
building is a concrete parapet and anything but level.

Wondering if anyone has any good tips for getting that top row level/square
and keeping the rest of the rails perfectly perpendicular? (keeping in
mind the length...32.8m (110')

Much Thanks,

*Benn Kilburn *

Re: [RE-wrenches] Vertical wall, shared rails

2016-10-18 Thread cpickard aladdinsolar.com
Yes, laser level does the trick. Also--don't forget to consider
expansion/contraction of a single rail dimension. In Minnesota we would break
that long length into two or even three separate mounting sections with an inch
or two gap between. Don't forget, the building structure will also experience
some expansion/contraction which will not necessarily be in sync with the rail
changes. Over time, expansion/contraction could loosen attachment points.

I use a laser plumb, sit it on the ground over your marks and loft the
marks to the top. It will be very accurate.

I have taken adjustable
ground mount racks & flipped them upside down. They work great as long as you

Re: [RE-wrenches] Vertical wall, shared rails

2016-10-17 Thread Benn Kilburn
Hey Bill,
I've spoken with a couple distributers of quality lasers (Leica, for
example) and explained the details and they agree the width and location we
are working at poise the real challenges here.

The laser beams get a fair bit more difficult to see in the daylight
(fortunately for this case the days are getting shorter quicker around
here).

I agree that some use of a laser will probably work for us, I just thought
i'd throw this out there to see if anyone on this list has tackled
something similar and see if they have any insights to share.

Thanks,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Vertical wall, shared rails

2016-10-17 Thread Bill Loesch

Ben,

There are a multitude of laser levels (in a multitude of forms)
available to do what I think you are trying to do.

The 110 feet might be an issue but if you are consistent you can
probably plot the location for halfway and then repeat the process for
the second half. Perhaps there is already a level that accommodates the
110 foot range in one effort? Best wishes, let us know what you decided
and how it turned out.

The rails obviously have to be exactly perpendicular the entire length
so we are taking extra care that the first row (top row) is true and
using template spacers for each row down. Only problem is that the
top of the building is a concrete parapet and anything but level.

Wondering if anyone has any good tips for getting that top row
level/square and keeping the rest of the rails perfectly
perpendicular? (keeping in mind the length...32.8m (110')
