Check with Mike Collis, WA6SVT. He is an engineer with KUNA/KESQ in
Palm Springs and the system designer for ATN, he may know someone
close to you. I would do it, but I am not insured, and I've spent my
fair share up towers already this month.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] D B Products 224 Vhf antenna Question

2005-05-24 Thread Russ

I had a DB-224 cut for 151.955 from a
local school district on 147.315 for many years. It worked just
fine.
I replaced it about a year ago with a new
DB-224 cut by the factory and it does not work any better then the one cut for
151.955. I could have saved a few bucks and left well enough a lone. The bottom
line is it should work just fine if you do not go to far down the band. At
147.315 the SWR was flat and looked good on the site master.
Good luck and 73,

Re: [Repeater-Builder] D B Products 224 Vhf antenna Question

2005-05-24 Thread Eric Lemmon
Michael,

I have a DB224-E in service right now, on a hilltop packet node, and it
works very well. The "E" split is for 138-150 MHz, and this was
originally used by a Government station in the 138-140 MHz band. The
DB224 is broadband and works well in duplex operation.

Sitting in the garage is a new DB224E-E, which is the elliptical-pattern
version of the same antenna. This antenna is for a new 2m repeater that
will be at one side of the intended coverage area, and I know it will
perform exactly as I expect.

One of the advantages of a four-bay dipole antenna over a fiberglass
vertical of similar gain is that the vertical bandwidth is remarkably
superior. This makes the dipole antenna work better for close-in
portables and mobiles that are below the main lobe of the pattern. It's
also much less prone to wind-induced noise.

You will find that a large number of ham system use '224s or '228s
(two 224's on one 40' mast). Look at www.repeater-builder.com, then
select the "Antenna Systems" page, then scroll down about 2/3 of
the way to the "Antennas" section, then scroll down to the Phelps
Dodge section. You will find a lot of '224 info.

You will want to take them apart, clean up the joints, use DeOxIt on
them, and reassemble with stainless steel, and put a split washer
(also stainless steel) on every bolt. You will want to use non-acidic
RTV on the coax-to-loop connections. Do that and you can ignore it
for 20 years, unless you are in a salt water / coastline environment.

If the harness looks like it's falling apart, bite the bullet and order a
new one.

>Michael C. Johnson
>KD4HLH

Folks have taken the 160-170MHz ones and cut the loops
and lengthened them by splicing in (welding in) pieces of
aluminum rod to make the elements the proper length for
the 130-150 MHz range. Someone was going to shoot
some pictures for a photo article for the web page on how
to do that but I never got anything.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] I need "professional" help

2005-05-24 Thread Eric Lemmon
Jeff,

The best way to locate someone to install your antenna is to contact each
of the licensees in that area, and find out what riggers they employ. You
can also contact the chief engineers at local broadcast stations, for the
same info.

Be aware that, depending upon the proximity and power of any other
stations in the immediate area, the rigger may have to request that one or
more transmitters be shut down while he works. This may incur a
significant cost.

Hi Don,

I have two of these controllers. The controller doesn't offer a time
announcement.
As for the voice announcement, you need the external DVR (digital voice
recorder) board which is
accessed/controlled by the RC-1000 controller.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] UHF ham band offset dipole array availability

2005-05-24 Thread Russ
Hey Steve,
Not as well as one for the 440-450 would work.
You can still buy the DB-411 (NEW) for 440-450.
All so the DB-408 for 440 works very well if you
do not need every thing going in one direction. Omni or
Quasi-omni
Good Luck,

[Repeater-Builder] Micor Mobile PL Enc/Dec

2005-05-24 Thread Nick Papadonis
I have a UHF Micor mobile and would like to add a PL Encoder/Decoder to
it for CTCSS operation. Does anyone have any suggestions or info on
which signals to tap? Should I seek an off the shelf unit (not sure
which are available anymore) or build one with an ASIC?

There are Micor PL decode boards available on Ebay, however I haven't
seen encode boards.

Thanks,

Novice license? Old call KN2BDK. (8-20-52). It was really tough removing
desense in the crystal set receiver caused by spark gap transmitter.
Been trying ever since, haven't figured it out yet.

Email me a picture of two of it. While I don't

probably tell you by looking at it what it's
real world spec is. I might have a manual for it

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Info needed on Standard RPA-5/90WA

C'mon, guys!! Doesn't ANYONE know about this animal?? I've tried
searching the internet (including Vertex/Standard's webpage) with no
luck.

I'd like some information on this Power Amp:

Standard UHF RF Power Amplifier
Model RPA-5/90WA

The heat sink is finned aluminum, measures ~19.5 x ~10.5 inches, and
is
notched for rack mounting.

Is this amp rated for continuous duty at full output, or is it
adjustable to a level where it will "survive" in ham radio
service?
Also, if anyone can point me toward any documentation on it, I'd
be
much obliged.

Thanks!

We hope to see you join us in listening to this contact between the

EchoLink AMSAT and EDU_NET servers. The event will start at 17:21UTC.
Please give the EDU_NET server your preference over the AMSAT server

If using IRLP is more convenient for you than using EchoLink, please

Be nice Neil. Some of us still remember when the Novice was re-introduced.

Vincent N6OA got mine 50 years ago this year.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Transmit Noise

2005-05-24 Thread Neil McKie

I have a carefully selected pair of sledgehammers here for use
 on-site: 8 lb and 20 lb.

I seldom need the use of the 20 lb ... that one time use guarantees
it will never be needed for that project again.
