Re: [Repeater-Builder] Frequency Listing Sites

2010-04-23 Thread Dennis Wade
Radio Reference is an excellent resource, and you can find all the below and
more there.

Generally the UHF frequencies (certainly in the Sacramento area) are for the
Capital Division which protects state property, as well as state officials.
Other areas in California that have significant state properties will
probably have a Capital Division presence (as in SF for example). These are
the successors to the old State Police folks that merged into CHP in the
mid-80's.

The extender frequencies (as others have said I think) are only really
useful when you're within a mile or two of where an officer is out of the
car.

You may also find a couple of frequencies in the 70 mhz range that are used
to interconnect remote receiver sites with their respective dispatch
centers. North Sacramento is an example.

But for traveling there is no getting around the low band VHF dispatch/car
channels. The extenders might be useful, but your looking at listening
primarily to the VHF-LO range.

 Have fun!

[Repeater-Builder] Anyone get RSS for MT1000 to run on a Dell M70 in DOS?

2010-03-23 Thread Dennis Wade
Good evening,

Well the subject line asks the question. The Dell M70 is a
1.8 ghz Pentium M machine. What I've done is this:

Installed DOS7.1 (the Wind98SE one) in a dual boot
arrangement on its own partition. I have been able to run RSS under
this DOS on a different machine.

Run FIFO.com to disable the FIFO buffer on the 16550A UART

Run RSS with MoSlo at various slower speeds with both
methods of slowdown.

   Constructive suggestions welcome...Thanks!

[Repeater-Builder] Cable prep and crimp on connectors

2009-12-02 Thread Dennis Wade
Good Afternoon,

I've been following the previous threads and doing a lot of
research on the issue of crimp on coax connectors vs. solder. Based
on that research and several very useful threads on this list I
purchased a Paladin Crimp All tool with a couple of dies for RG-8/213
and type and RG-58/59 type cables. I bought some connectors from the
same industrial jobber here locally to practice my installation
technique. The results haven't been too bad...they look fine, are
solidly on the cable, ohm out fine, etc (solder center pins). I used
a sharp utility knife for prepping the cable. (Yes, I did verify that
the hex dimensions of the dies match the connector manufacturer's
specifications.)

I really didn't like the knife approach..it worked, but was
pretty tedious for me. So, the question is...

For those who use something other than a utility knife, what
is the coax prep tool of choice? Do you do a 2-level tool or 3?

Is there such a think as one tool for both RG 8 and RG
58/59/RG-6 type cables? I'd rather not have one tool per cable size
if I can help it.

   Thanks for your input!

 Jeff,

What an excellent tutorial. This should be a permanent
 article on the Repeater-buiilder site!

Adding some pictures of the various crimp tools and the
crimping process would make it complete.

BTW - for those looking to buy one of these tools - although
the Daniels HX4 and Kings KTH1000 crimpers look identical,
 their dies do not interchange.

In an attempt to bring this thread back.grin...

Would anyone care to comment on and compare the tools offered by both
Paladin and RF Industries, as well as the link earlier in this thread?
Not cheap, but not the several hundred dollars either as quoted by
someone above.

I've had the same questions as I am also considering a crimp only
station. For the most part, everything I've read leans strongly to
the view that crimping is at least as good if not better as soldering
(with the usual caveats as to quality of the tools employed).

[Repeater-Builder] Moto battery charger light question

what does it mean when one of the slots shows a steady yellow/red

The same battery in all 5 other slots shows the expected
yellow/red/green sequence followed by the steady red for charging.

Remember I need to use Moto RSS for the MT-1000 and Spectra. The only

WIn98SE. I've tried faster laptops and desktops...P2s and P3's with
both XP and WIn98 with no luck at all. (Win98 is always started in
DOS mode, never a DOS window).

Thank you again for all the replies...I appreciate it.

[Repeater-Builder] GLB Synthesizer - The next step?

2006-02-22 Thread Dennis Wade
I found this thread quite interesting...I didn't know the GLB existed
till now. It sounds like a fun thing to tinker with. Have to keep my
eyes open.

But I've had this concept in my brain for a while, and I wonder what
you all might think. Bear in mind its a concept.

Seems that the next logical step (albeit the need for one, except for
guys like me who have alot ot Motrac lying around, is debatable), is
to use a DDS chip controlled by a PIC to generate the necessary
signals to enable frequency agility for the MOTRAC in my case. Maybe
even the dual output DDS...to provide both xmit and rcvr injection?
The PIC could provide memories, offset, etc. Maybe even control PL
frequency and associate it with a memory channel.

Yeah, probably over thought...but might breathe new life into those
rigs, especially in a base application.

So...does anyone have a manual I can have a copy of for a GLB to get
an idea of the frequency scheme. It occurs to me that to get 5kc
increments on the output of the multiplier chain, the steps at 8 mc
for example need to be alot smaller...do I have that concept right?

 Comments?

[Repeater-Builder] Quintron Paging Transmitter - manuals needed

2006-02-12 Thread Dennis Wade
Hello everyone,

I've been given a compete Quintron paging transmitter
currently on 43 mhz. The 6 foot rack includes a synthesized exciter,
control, metering and (heavy) power supply. Although I find serial
numbers on all the individual modules and the entire rack, I can't
seem to find a model number for the whole system. Web searches
suggest, but not with certainty. that it is a QT-350. Others
suggestions are a QT-7080. (Anyone know how to determine for sure?).

This is the RF deck that uses a single 4-400 and I am told is
rated at about 300-350 watts CCS in class C.

I need whatever manuals (for the exciter, PLL and PS in
particular) can find for this unit to begin designing a conversion.
Any info is appreciated. Reasonable copy costs are gladly paid.

   Thanks!
