[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Linking
OK, I know I've mentioned this before, but I think I'm on to something now... I wanted to have a stand alone repeater linker, kind of a crossband repeater, that would link uhf and vhf repeaters together without needing to make any changes to either repeater. The problem I ran into is when the first repeater finishes transmitting, the linker will hear the second repeater (if the pl doesn't drop out) and will key up the first repeater again. This cycle will continue until you turn off the linker. I tried this with my crossband radio and it causes the same problem. One solution is to have the repeater controller stop transmitting their pl right after the COR drops. Not all repeaters do this, so you would have to be selective as to which repeaters you link. The solution I came up with today is to use a microcontroller with a built in a/d converter. If after the first repeater stops transmitting, the microcontroller can sample the audio coming from the second repeater. If I go through a high pass filter, I should (might) be able to determine if the audio is 'dead air', a courtesy tone, or someone talking. If it's dead air or a tone, I won't key the linker. I can then wait for the COR from the second repeater to drop, or listen for audio. Do you think it will work? - Jerry

Kinda. Problem: ID's. The RICK isn't properly ID'ing the link transmitters. Many of us have been down this path on the list. It'll lead to an annoying discussion of Part 97 if we go too far down that road. But you DO need to ID every transmitter. 'Nuff said. Best way: Put a dedicated link TX/RX at each repeater site or some sort of VoIP linking on its own controller port. In-band RF linking on the user input frequencies is a kludge at best. It can double with users, and has other timing problems... If you MUST link in-band, make the link margin (RF power) high enough that if the link doubles with someone, the LINK wins and captures the repeater receiver well enough that at least one of the transmissions can be heard by all... --- Nate Duehr, WY0X n...@natetech. com

I've been kicking around the idea of a portable repeater linker consisting of one VHF Radius, one UHF Radius, and a RICK controller in the crossband mode. I've talked to the different repeater owners and they have given me permission to give my idea a try. The 'linker' works great the first time. The receiver radio hears the output of the first repeater and keys the transmitter radio which keys up the repeater. The problem comes in when the transmitter unkeys. The receiver radio hears the tail of the second repeater and keys up. When the second machine drops, the transmitter radio hears the tail of it's repeater and keys up. This continues FOREVER. That too is odd, the paging companies I have worked for, have had very few problems, one time an alarm monitor that a computer was connected to got stuck an was spewing out about 360 pages a min. That caused some concern, but a tech re-programed a dial in modem and that took care of that. Then a writeup to repeater-builder Mike WA6ILQ Well, using Mike's suggestion, a suggestion from the VXR-7000 group, and some playing around, I finally came up with a solution. Both suggestions were to use npn transistors, but I had some FETs laying around and I wanted to try those. Here is what I did... I put the 2 diodes in series and fed the gate a 2n7000 FET with a pullup resistor on the drain and the source to ground. I tied the gate of a second 2n7000 to the drain of the first, the source to ground, and the drain through a pullup resistor to 12v. For the life of me I could not figure out why I wasn't getting the 1.4v drop across the two diodes. Then it came to me, there is no current from the gate to source in a FET. I put a resistor between the gate of the first FET and ground (provided some current to pass through the diodes) and VOILA! It worked like a champ! I haven't played around much with FETs. I just got started with them when a keyer I bought had a bad FET and I had to troubleshoot it. Thanks for all of your help. [Repeater-Builder] VXR-7000 Rear ACC Jack and Remote Function
I am trying to connect an RC-100 controller to the rear jack of my VXR- 7000. For some reason, when the remote switch is pressed and the LED is on, the repeater ignores the ACC jack and still acts the same as when the repeater is in local. Any ideas? My name is Jerry and my call sign is NA3A. I have been asked by my employer to find a way to get an AM radio signal into an assisted living complex. There are a lot of elderly people who still like AM. Unfortunately the only the only place an AM signal is available is on the 4th of 7 floors. The building has a metal shell but apparently that doesn't apply to the 4th floor. A suggestion was made to take several pre-set am stations and pump the signal through their cable system so that they can listen to them there.
