Re: [Repeater-Builder] Micor base sensitivity

2006-12-19 Thread n . mckie

  Funny thing about that ...

We have two Micor Repeater Stations here (443.050 MHz
147.36 MHz) with the original Squelch Gate cards still in them
and properly set up according to the Micor Manual(s).

We interconnected the two stations using the factory Line Driver
cards as in the manual ... even though both stations are in the
 same relay rack.

At no time have we ever considered the possibility of removing
 them for a 'modern' controller.

We wouldn't trade that reliability of using factory designed /
manufactured equipment for any after-market 'controller.'

You may rewire as you wish (The time is [who carres?] etc.)

We have found the ultimate reliability is go the factory route.

The only problem we had, a couple of years ago, one of the
users speaker-mike cord on his handheld shorted out for part
of the day. He discovered this later and apologized.

 Washington D.C.-
It was announced today that Kellogg's and the Federal
Communications Commission have signed a pact to
issue Amateur Radio Licenses on specially marked
boxes of Corn Flakes. In this unprecedented move
the FCC believes this will not hurt amateur radio but
allow all individuals to receive an amateur radio license
without having to demonstrate any skills with the exception
of being able to use a pair of scissors to cut out their
operating permit from the breakfast cereal box.

Kellogg's spokesperson commented that they were proud
to have been selected by the government to be the issuer
of licenses for amateur radio in the US and hope to soon
make an agreement with other cereal loving countries.
They also expect that will be issuing certificates of
achievement for DXCF for confirmed contacts with 100 corn
 flakers.

It is now just a matter of time. The problems with hams not
understanding what they are doing will increase. Interference
will increase. Commercial interests will petition the FCC for
the frequencies. The hams will not be able to defend their
desire to keep the frequencies. Now the ham frequencies will

The handwriting is on the wall.

Less that 10% of the newly licensed hams can draw a simple

In another life, 20 years ago or so, my employer was using
Tripp-Lite yellow domed strobe lights for their construction vehicles.

One day, I was visiting the central garage and noticed they had 5
Tripp-Lite strobes on a bench. I asked the foreman why, his reply
was because they had crapped out and hadn't been tossed out yet.

I asked him if I could take them back to my shop and he replied 'Yes!'

Fast forward a bit ... I analyzed the problem of each strobe light,
determined there was an early version and a later version. Quickly, I
discovered the problem of each strobe light, used the unrepairable
units parts to fix the repairable ones and returned the repaired units
to the central shop a couple of hours later. From then on, I got all the
  strobe lights for repair.

I didn't need to contact the manufacturer as the transistors used were
fairly obvious from a bit of study (Motorola) and the rest of the parts
were available from the dead strobe units or the distributor. (flash tubes)

You might want to study the internal workings of your power supply in
  case the problem is obvious.

   Good luck with your project,

Tripp lite does not allow there schematics out in the public, making
repair of their power supplys fairly difficult. When I called asking
for one they told me that they would be glad to sell me another PR-40
but couldn't offer a schematic for the one I had sitting in front of
my blowd up. Repair involved the shotgun method of replacing every
semiconductor component on the board. For future reference I would
advise anyone to pony up the extra money and buy an Astron, at least
 those are user servicable.

I'm not sure about the Micor core composition but my first
 commercial two way
radio was an almost new Regency BTH301 30w high band radio. The
 tech that
gave it to me said he replaced the tripler transistor and a
 cracked core. Never
worked after that. The tripler would not tune. This was my first
 crack at
fixing a transmitter. After messing with this thing off and on for
 2 months I
cracked the tripler core from messing with it too much. I went
 back to the shop and
found another one just like it and got the core from the tripler
 coil and
screwed it in to my project radio. It screamed to life putting out
 40w without
any serious metering. I then tried other cores from the same
 radio, none worked.
Thats when I learned a little about core composition. If your
 stage wont tune
after you replace the cores make sure you got the right stuff.

Most certainly it does ... did that 35+ years ago ... one Motorola

2-way radio, a couple of crystals, a pair of gold crystal ovens,
two Motorola cavity resonators, a couple of Ringo antennas,
some RG8/U coax and connectors, a telescoping mast, a fan
for the transmitter, an ID'er of somesort, an open frame rack
to install it all in and a donated repeater site.

   How simple do you want?

More recently ... a pair of Motorola highband Motrans (U43MSN),
a couple of properly crystaled Channel Elements, a couple of
custom built voice coil to line / line to mic input networks
 (also
had automatic PTT installed - all on one pair of wires) 2 12
 volt
batteries, a couple of antennas and masts, a good map, plenty

departed for the Baja. The Baja 500 off-road race 33-34-35??

   Is that simple enough?

Of course, it helped at the time I worked for a local two-way

 Hi Don,

The normal MASTR II receiver uses a low-side Local Oscillator
injection for their mixer. The IF is 11.2 MHz, so you deduct
 11.2
MHz from the operating frequency. The normal operating frequency
for the 88 series MASTR II radios is 450 to 470, so the LO (Local
Oscillator) is engineered to run between 438.8 and 458.8 MHz (450 ?
 11.2 = 438.8; and 470 ?11.2 = 458.8).

When we in the amateur radio service order a low-side injection
crystal, we are essentially asking the LO to operate between
 428.8
and 438.8 MHz, worst case being 10 MHz below the engineered
 operating frequency range (440 ?11.2 = 428.8, and 450 ?11.2 =
438.8) This is stretching the original design of the local
oscillator 10 MHz beyond the design parameters.

If we order high-side injection crystals, we add 11.2 MHz to our
operating frequency, rather than subtract it. So the LO will
 runs
 between 451.2 and 461.2 MHz (440 + 11.2 = 451.2, and 450 +11.2 =
 462.2).

If you are operating in an area of the country where you run low-
 in,
high-out split repeaters, your receivers will operate between 440
and 445 MHz, and the highest possible LO frequency will be 456.2
 MHz
(445 + 11.2 = 456.2), or right in the sweet spot for the LO range
 (438.8 and 458.8).

If you are operating in an area of the country where you run high-
in, low-out split repeaters, and your receiver will operate
 between
445 and 450 MHz, and the highest possible LO frequency will be
 450 +
11.2 = 462.2, or only 3.4 MHz higher than the designed frequency
 of
 the LO.

The cross-over frequency seems to be 448.300 MHz, which is 1.7
 MHz
higher at a high-side injection than designed, and a low-side
injection is 1.7 MHz lower than designed Local Oscillator.

So, maybe a good rule of thumb would be to order high-side
 injection
on operating frequencies below 448.300, and low-side injection on
receive frequencies above 448.300. That way, the worst case
scenario is your being either 1.7 MHz higher or lower than the
original engineered design on the local oscillator.

You can do the same math for high-band radios. Same IF.

 Hope that helps.

Not quite, as 145 MHz will never make it through the UHF helicals. It's
just leaking out of the RX case. Neil's got the easiest solution: order
a high-side LO xtal for your 447.575 RX.

But that will just move the problem somewhere else...up to 152.925

Most certainly it does ... did that 35+ years ago ... one Motorola
Sensicon 'A' Receiver, one Motorola '80D' transmitter strip, a
power supply out of a Motorola 'Stan Pac' railroad locomotive
2-way radio, a couple of crystals, a pair of gold crystal ovens,
two Motorola cavity resonators, a couple of Ringo antennas,
some RG8/U coax and connectors, a telescoping mast, a fan
for the transmitter, an ID'er of somesort, an open frame rack
to install it all in and a donated repeater site.

   How simple do you want?

More recently ... a pair of Motorola highband Motrans (U43MSN),
a couple of properly crystaled Channel Elements, a couple of
custom built voice coil to line / line to mic input networks (also
had automatic PTT installed - all on one pair of wires) 2 12 volt
batteries, a couple of antennas and masts, a good map, plenty
of food ... munchies, beer, soda pop, suntan lotion, etc. and
departed for the Baja. The Baja 500 off-road race 33-34-35??
  years ago.

   Is that simple enough?

Of course, it helped at the time I worked for a local two-way
radio service shop and had access to all the test equipment I
  needed ...

Now-adays ... Comm Spec make a simple repeater controller ...
receiver to transmitter audio coupling doesn't need a gold plated

Subject: [Repeater-Builder] spur from UHF MASTR II mobile - link radio

 Hi guys,

Built a link radio out of a MASTR II mobile a while back. 444.575
 TX,
 447.575 RX.

It is NOT duplexed and the RX section turns off during TX, just a
 normal
MASTR II mobile setup. The only modification done was to by-pass
 the PA
and run the exciter output over to the Low-Pass Filter board in
 the PA
section directly -- didn't need much power to make this link work
 with a
6 or 7 element yagi mounted outside, pointed at the repeater it's
 linking into.

After having the link installed in my basement for a few days, I
realized that it's throwing a fairly strong dead carrier on VHF at
145.460 or thereabouts, but ONLY when it's sitting idle in
 Receive.
When the radio is transmitting the carrier generated by the
 receiver
 disappears.

It's not strong enough to receive it further than about one house
 away
on an HT down the street, and I don't hear it one block over, but
 there
in the house... permanent carrier on 145.46. (Unfortunately this
 is the
output frequency of one of our club repeaters that's over 40 miles
 and
behind a ridge from my house, and the repeater loses completely
 to the
carrier coming from the link radio in the basement.)

I attempted to figure out the mix math to see if that would be a
normal thing to see when using that particular UHF RX frequency,
 but
I'm honestly not very good at that. I figured I'd post and see if
 any
of the list's gurus might have an explanation of why it might be
 doing
 this. Any thoughts?

I might (just to see what happens) stuff the crystals in another
 MASTR
II, tune it up, and see if the same thing happens, but if this
 could be
explained mathematically, that would be more interesting.

Hmm, what other info might you need... ahh... thinking back, the
crystals might not have been ordered with high-side injection...
 I'd
have to look at the ICM packing sheet, and it's at home.

Neil,

I'm looking for a Motorola publication called the R56 Handbook,
which deals with RF grounding systems. While all bonded together
in the end (as per NEC), the RF grounding system is not to be
confused with lightning protection and standard electrical system
ground.

This is not a Polyphaser deal, but a MOTOROLA publication, which I

Jim,

First add all the System Gains (SG)in dbW measurements, from that
figure you then subtract all your Sytem Losses (SL)in dbW, the result

equals your ERP in dbW. Convert the ERP in dbW back to ERP in Watts.

Before you start adding the SG you must convert your Tx output pwr.
from Watts to dbW. (ie 50w=17.0dbW) I use a Conversion Table that is

included in some old Rptr. coord, papers, however you should be able
to find a conversion table or the mathematical(sp?) formula on Google

or on one of the Rptr. Bldr. site pages.

Therefore the following example:

1. 50w Tx out=17.0dbW + ant. gain 9.2 dbW = Tot. SG 26.2dbW

2. Ant. FL lgth. /100 x loss per 100' at you freq band = Tot/FL loss
in db. (50 /100x1.04 = .52dbW (1/2LDF @ 450mhza=1.04db/100').

3. Duplexer insertion loss = 1.5 dbW

4. Other losses = 0.0dbW

5. Tot. SL (.52+1.5) = 2.02dbW

6. Tot. SG (26.2) - Tot. SL (2.02) = Tot. ERP in dbW (24.18dbW)

7. Convert ERP in dbW back to ERP in Watts (24.18 = 250+ Watts ERP.

Note: Some interpolation of the tables I use is required.

Feedline looses per 100' @ given freq. are generally provided by the
mfg. If you would like a copy of my work sheet (Tables included)
email me direct.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Oh those inspection stories...

2006-05-29 Thread n . mckie

  Hi Skipp

Hi Neil,

Although the example story deviation was excessive, I'm not
sure the citation would have actually stuck in a band where
wideband experimental amateur radio modes are allowed. The
results could have played out a number of different ways.

I would believe the response to the citation would have been
there is no specification in Part 97 of the FCC regulations
 about deviation or some such.

I have found cases where the inspection people were quite nice,
very smart and interested in making sure the spirit of the law
is pretty much in effect. I've also found cases where the
converse was the deal of the day.

The best thing one could hope for is to stay off the FCC's radar
screen by being realistic (not a division of Tandy Corportation)
and keeping your paperwork straight.

A lot of people will call upon the authorities to deal with a
problem and then act surprised when the inspectors also want to
check out the reporting parties equipment and licenses. Beware
of what you ask for the other person as it will surely also
happen to you...

Except for license tests, I have had never been contacted by
commission employees except once by someone in the Los Angeles
 office.

At the time, I was the amateur band UHF frequency coordinator
in southern California. He wanted to know who was on a certain
frequency. Looking at my info chart, I told him who. Also let
him know how to locate the person. His repeater on Mt. Wilson
at the time, was spurious and was causing interference.

The transmitter, as I remember, was an RCA CSU15 ...

cheers,
skipp

I know a lot of you guys dance and sing the Type
Accepted or Certificated requirement, but in the
real world it's mostly a popcorn fart.

If the FCC should ever come to inspect your radio site,
most any radio type properly operating is not going to be
on their list of things to worry about. They are probably
not going to be asking you to remove radios from repeater
racks to ensure they are currently type accepted.

It's the responsibility of the equipment owner operator to
ensure the equipment operates without causing problems. If
there are no reported problems you will probably never see
or hear from the FCC.

If you use an M10 for a GMRS Repeater Tx, chances are it will
not be a real problem in 99.7% of the cases. An inspector will
be more interested in a current license for the frequencies and
power levels used.

cheers,
skipp

The technical requirements for a transmitter useable for GMRS service
ARE:

1. FCC part 95 type acceptance.
2. Transmitter frequency stability of .00025%

To check if the equipment you want to use meets the technical
specifications
for use as a GMRS repeater transmitter. Use the FCC ID number on the

The technical requirements for a transmitter useable for GMRS
service
ARE:

1. FCC part 95 type acceptance.
2. Transmitter frequency stability of .00025%

To check if the equipment you want to use meets the technical
specifications
for use as a GMRS repeater transmitter. Use the FCC ID number on the
transmitter equipment and search at this link:

Yes, I've noticed some short-term aging problems with crystals run at
50
C. In one case the crystal was held at 35 C for a couple of years,
then
sat on the shelf for a few more. When put back into service at 50 C,
it
drifted up about 2 PPM over a period of a couple of days.

So it seems that even moderately heated crystals need to be aged at
their
operating temperature.

Hi Richard and Neil...
In my instance, it floats between 3 and 3.5 volts which is just
enough
to confuse my controller as to which state the squelch is actually
in.

Both approaches would probably work just fine... but haven't had a
chance
to deal with it yet.

I can think of a number of instances when one might want to disable
the
input tone. I haven't had a need to so far, so the issue hasn't been
resolved as of yet.

During the summer is when most station owners want to do maintenance
on
AM-Directional systems, so my days have been pretty full of late.
grin!

Thanks for the ideas though I will check into it once I get a
chance

Hmmm ... I have run into this problem in the past ... I fixed it

by biasing the emitter of the first (external) transistor off

ground with a voltage divider .. or sometimes by placing a diode

  in series with the emitter.

One time - I think it was a Standard land-mobile radio, the COS

feed (aka squelch detector) was several volts above ground. In

that instance, I installed a voltage divider between A+ and ground

  - to positive bias the added transistor above ground so when the

squelch opened, the sense lead to the external transistor turned

  it on.

  Make sense?

RE: [Repeater-Builder] scanner interference

MHz IF as I remember ...

So how can a scanner interfere with a repeater? I'm probably
missing
something basic but thought I'd ask anyhow.

Given the original description of the problem Mathew has been asked
to help solve, I doubt a scanner is the problem - hence I'm changing
the Subject header...

The local oscillator in scanners can radiate back out the antenna
and be heard some distance away. Many scanners receiving in the VHF
band have the LO offset below the receive frequency by whatever the
IF of the scanner happens to be (10.7 and 10.8 MHz are both common,
but there may be others).

Years ago when I put up my first repeater I encoutered this problem.
The repeater was on 145.110 and the original configuration was
carrier squelch. As soon as I turned it on it started kerchunking
rhythmically... bleep... bleep... bleep... After a few hours hunting
I found a scanner one mile from the repeater site that was causing
it. The owner had 155.310 programmed in the scanner and that one had
a 10.8 MHz IF. Every time is scanned that frequency it keyed my
repeater. 155.310 minus 10.8 equals 144.510, my repeater input
frequency! The signal that thing put at the repeater site a mile
away was quite strong. When the scanner stopped on 155.310 it put a
darn near full quieting signal into my repeater receiver. I'm sure
many others have similar experiences.

Thank you to all who provided great solutions on solving tearing
effect from
mobile mounts on thin autobody metal vehicles. It all may now be moot

because, We all should be aware of legislation being proposed in many
states
such as Driving While Distracted or Inattentive Driving laws.
These new
laws will curtail mobile radio operations. CT, NY, NJ and DC already
have
laws prohibiting people talking on cell phones while driving. A
proposal in
NJ while not yet introduced for voting but being formulated:
New Jersey clarifies that a distracted driver may be charged with
reckless, careless or unsafe driving when so warranted, a law
enforcement
officer may charge a person with a violation if that person, while
operating
a motor vehicle, engages in distracting behavior including, but not
limited
to, the use of communications technology such as wireless telephones,

pagers, facsimile machines, locator devices, AM/FM radios, compact
disc
players, audio cassette players, video players, citizens band radios,
and
dispatch radios; engaging in personal grooming; consuming food or
beverages;
reading; or tending to unsecured pets. So heads up, be careful, keep
one ear
to your state capitol and the other to the mobile rig while driving
under
those low hanging tree branches. Soon we may not need mobile
antennas.

The easiest way is to put connectors on it, a load on one side and
swr

You need to know what brand the heliax is.

The easiest way is to put connectors on it, a load on one side and
swr
bridge and radio on the other and see if it loads up.

You need to know what brand the heliax is.

The MF or Muti Freq. tones were even numbers 700 + 900,
700 + 1100, 900 + 1100 for 1, 2, 3 then they used 1300 1500 1700
with the other low group for the rest.

This was known as In band signalling and is what the operators
used on their tandem trunks (Inter office circuits) to place long
distance calls. An idle circuit had 2600 tone on it
also known as SF (Signalling frequency)

73 John VE3AMZ (Retired Bell Canada)

Later, Motorola studied for a human ear sensitive tone to use on
their pager alerting ... and also settled on 2600 Hertz.

The first pagers that came out drew a lot of customer complaints -
as when the customer was on a long distance call and his pager
alerted him, his long distance call got dropped.

Fast forward ... apparently, the 2600 Hz alert tone was the same
tone Telco used as a disconnect tone.

BEEP - BLAST - your call got dropped ...

Based on this experience, I'd say two omnis 25' horizonally

considerable desense.

You will likely end up with an audible sound by using
two signals at the same time. Let's say you use 77.0
Hz and 192.8 Hz. These are unrelated but you will
still get the sum and difference frequencies coming
out, which would give you around 115 Hz and 269 Hz.
You might hear the one at 269. If you used two signals
that were much closer, you could hear a slow beat
note.

Also, depending on the kind of decoders you use, they
may not be happy seeing another sub-audible tone
present along with the desired one.

After saying this, I bet someone will come along and
tell you that it will work, and how to do it!

Do you really want an answer? g

I had the same problem with the roof metal being too flexible.
I used a Ryobi Weedeater blade inside, as a giant washer, and
another conventional smaller washer on the top. This has been in
place now for four years with no problems at all.

You still don't want to hit anything low though.. With the
expedition, and the SG, I top out at about 11' It hears GREAT
though!

Ahem ... I use a quarter wave antenna on each band with the NMO
(TAD/TAE) mounts. No tearing of the metal roof in the 7 years I
 have had them installed.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] That horrible noise

2006-04-21 Thread n . mckie

  Would you want to believe 146.85 - 146.73 = 0.12 or 120 kHz?

Guys,

I think you're missing one detail here. 146.73 minus 146.85 is 1200
KHz. Twice the typical 2 meter split of 600Khz.

I'm not sure EXACTLY why it's happening, but the math here has BAD
written all over it. Anytime you deal with multiples of your input
to output frequency separation, it's not a good thing.

I wonder if the two repeaters are using the same PL tone? If so,
does one, or both encode that tone as well?

This could help explain putting the repeater in PL not helping to
eliminate the interference.

I think Ken is on the right track with an audio delay causing a
howl. It's not a necessity however because of the RF delay in the
possible feedback path. Realize that even at the speed of light
(in free space) RF transmission and reception are not
instantaneous.

I think your best bet is to find a different frequency or location
for one of the repeaters if possible.

I'd be interested in hearing the wav file you recorded, Dave

But bear in mind that your comment that it's not coming from either
repeater could easily be wrong. As a matter of fact, if you're
running a
delay in the audio path of either repeater, one of them is most
definately
involved. It sounds like a typical spur/mix/intermod issue to me,
probably
 involving a 3rd party.

 Anyway, let's have a listen.

getting it almost continuously now, but weak, ranging from will
open squelch (even with PL!) to Will hold squelch but won't open
it Unfortunately, it's putting enough energy out at low
frequencies that the PL board is seeing a tone, so PL won't save
me.

The noise has an echoing quality that I think is VERY distinctive,
but I can't figure where it's coming from.

It's not happening in either repeater, we've had the opportunity to
completely shut down the machines when it's happening.

The two repeaters are maybe 1000' apart.

I've only started having a problem with it since replacing my
antenna so that I'm no longer stone deaf.

I have a 5M wav file of the noise, if anyone's interested.
It sounds like broadband noise at first, but then you notice
the feedback-ish sound in it. At times we've heard what seems
like bits of audio in the noise.

Ahem ... I use a quarter wave antenna on each band with the NMO
(TAD/TAE) mounts. No tearing of the metal roof in the 7 years I
  have had them installed.

I suspect that I have a larger footprint though, with the SG7900
mounted. I also have a 1/4 wave whip that's useful for immediately
after a storm, when the low hanging trees would otherwise cause me a
panic.

Either way, I can't get into my garage anyway, only 3 clearance.

If the Micor Power Supplies are either TPN1105A or TPN1106A yes,

If not those model numbers, no, they can't be adjusted for

Also look at west mountain the rigblaster people. They have a nice

power to your
13.8 v supply. I have used one at my base station for six months. It
 works

Hello,
I have several of these Micor repeaters with the TPN1105/6 battery
charger
supplies running and have the solution to your problem. First, the
factory
set the charge voltage at 14.25 volts since as standard equipment
they
supplied NICAD batteries for backup. Naturally, this is way to high
for
lead/acid. SO, all you need to do is open up the large steel plate on
 the
backside of the power supply and locate the Voltage adjust pot on the
large
PC board, I thik it is R1091... then, without any batteries on line,
adjust
to 13.2 volts. from the 14.25. Hook your batteries back up and you
are good
to go!. The slide switch on the PS should be left in FLOAT
position, if
switched to EQUALIZE it will add +1 Volt making 14.2, this is to
allow
for quicker recharge after a battery power event, and should be reset
after
24 hours to float.
Hope this all helps you.

As Neil once said, you can not measure the standing birds on an
antenna without a B1rd 43. B1rd is pronounced B one R D!

The B1rd is still one of the most important tools today.

I don't think Telewave was even around back then (40+ years ago).

Yes, a slightly off topic question.

I recently acquired a 1992 Jeep Cherokee with the 4L engine
4
 speed
automatic transmission. Anyone have any experience to know if
I
  should expect
to have any RFI problems from this vehicle?

I want to put the following bands of radios in it:
  HF (10-75 meters)
  6 meters
  2 meters
  440 MHz
  902 MHz
  CB (11 meters)

Any other advice from those who have had Jeep Cherokees for
 mounting
  radios in
  the Cherokee would be appreciated.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Birdies in - Jeep Cherokee

2006-04-05 Thread n . mckie

Hi John,

  ... snip ...

The drive shaft and 4wd front knuckle U-Joints without
grease fittings are/were my only complaint. I just had the
originals replaced with new Spicer units, which have the
much desired grease fittings. Doesn't have anything to do with
the radio, but what the heck...

Seems to me all new vehicles come without the Zerk (grease)
fittings whenever the manufacturer can get away without installing
them. Just more of something to wear out - and replace costing
you, the end user, more money.

In every opportunity to do so, I always buy replacement parts
 with the Zerk fittings attached.

  Hope this helps,

  Neil - WA6KLA

cheers,
skipp

Birds and the Telewaves are not SWR bridges, they're directional
wattmeters.

With that said, I'm not fan of the Telewaves. I have two of the
44A's, but
I rarely use them. The switch is a little flakey on one of the ones
I have,
even though it's only maybe 5 years old. The other one is a little
older,
and it has someting intermittant internally that results in it giving

different readings on sucessive key-ups.

I have several different flavors of Birds including 43's, 43P's, the
digital
4391A, etc. Without fail, I always find myself grabbing one of the
43's
(call me a stubborn OF, but they just work).

The digital 4391 is nice, but as you might imagine, the battery is
always
dead at the most inopportune time. I have a Bird 4410 at one of my
clients'
locations, and like it for what little time I've used it.

I have Coaxial Dynamics wattmeters of various types at broadcast
sites, but
generally speaking, if I'm the one doing the buying, I buy Bird.

Yup, me too... speaking of.. I dug this cont-duty PA out of the
shed.
Makes good power on 2m.. but have no idea what split it is supposed
to be.
I need to get it into service as the Mirage has crapped-out...

Stamped TLD-1692D1 on the ear of the chassis. The board has a
barcode of
TLD9392A.

I am pretty sure it is VHF, but anybody got an idea of what split?
My manual is s old, that it is chisled on stone tablets, and this
number
doesn't appear. Closest match was TLD1690A.. 132-150MHz split.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Re: AGT = IMTS ?

2006-03-28 Thread n . mckie

I guess you could call it a a by-product of having a mobile
telephone ... Each area of the mobile telephone service had,
of course, its own mobile (telephone) operator. She would
call directory assistance for you, if necessary, and connect
 you with your requested number

Each area also had its own on-duty 'technician' in case of a
difficulty. This was a live warm body who actually knew what
a two way radio looked like. I was impressed !!!

One Friday evening in the early seventies I was headed toward
San Jose, California for the weekend. From the Los Angeles area,
this was a several hour drive. (I had made the drive in less
than five hours once - but that is another story.)

As I got closer to San Jose, I finally got tired ... so I
called the Salinas technician via the mobile operator and
chatted with him all the way to my destination.

The less than five hour drive story is for another time ...
