Subject: DB-224 versions

We plan to buy a new DB-224 antenna for 146.34/94.
We notice the popular model covers 150-160 MHz.
Also available is a model covering 138-150 MHz, for about $50 more.
I've heard many times that the 150-160 model covers 2 meters just fine.
In fact we have a DB-264 with 150-160 MHz specs and it seems OK.
Is it worth it to look for the 138-150 MHz version ?
Thanks -- kd4ss

We have had both versions 224b and BD224 E (If I remember the
variations correctly) Thw first one we bought at a hamfest, it was cut
for 150 to 170 Mhz, we had a SWR of about 1.8:1 after we modified it
for 145.49 by adding 1 5/8 inches to each loop. It worked well for
about 4 or 5 years, then we started having a few problems with noise.
We finally bit the bullet and bought a new one from Primus (no I don't
work for them etc). They give ham clubs a discount which amounts to
to the wholesale price charged dealers. Our new antenna is 1.:1 on
145.490 and the coverage has increased about 10 or 20 miles.
Apparently we had some downtilt that we no longer have.
I would recommend buying a DB224 cut for the ham bands first, save
yourself trouble.

[Repeater-Builder] DB222

2006-03-23 Thread wa9ba
I modified a DB224 about 6 years ago from 15x.xxx to our repeater
pair of 144.890 / 145.490. I added 1 5/8 inches of tubing to each
loop. Noting was done to the harness and it worked pretty well for 5
years. Last fall, we were getting noise and it was decided the club
would buy a new DB224 to see if that would end some problems. It
did, I think some crud built up between the tubing I added and the
original loops. A little cleaning and some grease and I'll bet tit
would be good for another 5 years. On a side note, the new DB224 was
cut for the ham bands and the mast is about 3 feet longer and each
loop about 4 inches longer that the old ones, even after lengthening
them. I would add another 2 inches and use an analyser to see what
happened, you could always cut them shorter, but you know--- they
won't strech!

I saw a paper somewhere that described a mod using a long machine
screw
through the bottom of each element..

the matching cables are 35ohn(RG83?)The distance would have to be
changed between the two elements probably the 35ohm cable may
have to
be longer. May not be practical. Has anyone done it?

[Repeater-Builder] RE simple CW IDer

2006-03-20 Thread wa9ba
I have a couple NHRC controllers around here somewhere but I just want
a cheap simple IDer. I ordered one from ebay and one of the $10 from a
previous link.
These could also be for a IDer for a Foxhunt.
Thanks for all the suggestions

[Repeater-Builder] Quick CW ID'er

2006-03-19 Thread wa9ba
Has anyone came up with a cheap easy CW ID'er for a GR 500 repeater?
I was hoping I could find something that would say plug into the mic
socket that would ID every 10 minutes.

LED and the same little micro
speaker used on the PicoKeyer kit (the speaker mounts off-board).
There's an on-board voltage regulator so you can use a convenient
power
source like your 12V shack supply. All you need to supply is a
project
box, DC power source, and a couple of switches. This is a kit, and
requires some basic soldering skills and tools. Please also note
that
you will need an enclosure of some sort, power, and a switch or
two. You
can see the manual in PDF format at by clicking here.

Did you buy a V2.4 or earlier ID-O-Matic? Want the new features?
Just
email me, you can upgrade (and you don't have to buy anything!)

[Repeater-Builder] Question

2006-01-25 Thread wa9ba
I am in the process of setting up a link between a UHF and a VHF
repeater. We have a coordinated link frequency and I want to use
Motorola Radius M208 radios, (something on hand). My question is, has
anyone used this radio to do the same thing, and can it be done with
one radio at each site, half duplex?

[Repeater-Builder] Re DB224

2005-05-25 Thread wa9ba
We put a DB 224 up after loosing 2 Diamond 510 antennas and a
station master to lightning about 5 years ago. We replaced the
fiberglass antennas about 1 every year, the DB 224 is DC grounded
and doesn't seem to mind the lightning!
I aded 1 5/8 inches of aluminum to each loop to get the SWR dowm to
a respectable level. (It is between 1.1 and 1.2 to 1) The antennas
was originally cut for 150 to 160 Mhz. One thing we did do is drill
1/16th holes on the botom of each loop to let condensation out.
Another thing we did was to ad a grounding wire between the 2
sections to make up for any corosion between the joints, and put a
ground wire (battery cable) between the antenna and a railing that
was grounded to earth, this elimated a problem with noise that
developed. It is located on top of a grain elevator 182 HAAT.
Bill WA9BA

I have a DB224-E in service right now, on a hilltop packet node, and
it
works very well. The E split is for 138-150 MHz, and this was
originally used by a Government station in the 138-140 MHz band. The
DB224 is broadband and works well in duplex operation.

Sitting in the garage is a new DB224E-E, which is the elliptical-
pattern
version of the same antenna. This antenna is for a new 2m repeater
that
will be at one side of the intended coverage area, and I know it will
perform exactly as I expect.

One of the advantages of a four-bay dipole antenna over a fiberglass
vertical of similar gain is that the vertical bandwidth is remarkably
superior. This makes the dipole antenna work better for close-in
portables and mobiles that are below the main lobe of the pattern.
It's
also much less prone to wind-induced noise.

Greetings, All, I am in need to replace a vhf repeater antenna that

out there used this antenna, [10mhz spread, 150-160 MHz] on their
repeaters? A new one on the ham band will cost $499 plus shipping
plus brackets. I would like to use the ones I have, if
possible.Let me
know if any of you guys have used them, and do they work OK thanks,

[Repeater-Builder] Kenwood TKR 850

2005-04-20 Thread wa9ba

One final question...I didn't think to ask the tech...will my
current software work with the upgrade or will I need to upgrade it
as well?

Kenwood hasn't changed the software as far as I know since it was
written, it will work fine.

We Bought a TKR 750, we had it for 5 or 6 years and it worked
flawlessly so when it came time for a UHF repeater, it was a no
brainer on what to buy. We bought both of them from member of this
list server. About a year ago, the 850 didn't seem to be working
right so a couple of us went to the repeater site. When I checked
the power out from the TX to a dummy load, we had only 7 watts out,
I thought something was wrong with my Bird so I checked with another
watt meter, it was about the same. We contaced our local Kenwood
dealer and they replaced the PA with the update, no charge, It now
runs 25 watts out, they said we could run it a little higher, maybe
30 watts but we chose to keep it at 25.
If I remember correctly, when you program it for a repeater with the
software, it automaticly sets the power at 25 watts, if you set it
up as a base radio, 40 watts, but this is just from memory.
I have the service bullitens on the PA update, if anyone wants it, I
can email it to them, it is 4 pages.

[Repeater-Builder] Wanted Side mount for a DB 420

2005-04-08 Thread wa9ba

I am looking for a side mount for a DB420 antenna, our club is in the
processing of moving our UHF Repeater and need a side mount for a
Commercial tower I think it is a Rohn 55 but I,m not possitive. Any
help in locating a mount good used or new condition, at a fair price
would be appreciated.

[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Controllers

2004-12-25 Thread wa9ba

Our club has owned a Link Club Controller for several years. It has
worked great but is a big pain in the !@@ to program. We recently
traded some things foir a Link RLC-4 controller but here we go
again, it is just different enough that you need to stop and read
the manual (very time consuming)!
What controllers do others use? Is there a controller that has
windows based software to program it? The Club has Windows software
but it takes hours to load and download the info!
What do you use and how easy is it to program?

[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Control

2004-09-21 Thread wa9ba
At a recent meeting buying or building a new control radio was
discussed. I remember reading years ago when the repeater was put on
the air for the first time that a control link must be 223 Mhz or
above to be a qualified control link. After searching part 97, I
cannot find the frequency for a link listed.
Has this requirement been lifed or can someone point me to the rule?
