the ham stuff. Motorola has ventured into ham, but they came out with a
radio that was 5 years too late for the price. Good radio, but where
synthesized radios were coming to market, putting out a crystal radio at
a higher price wasn't going to go anywhere.

Jim and Group,

But I thought that was how Motorola ran their business, five years behind
their competition! Well, maybe not that long. It's been a really long time
since Motorola was a leader across the board on their products, pagers (in
their heyday) and now cell phones are the only two that might apply. What
helps Motorola the most is name recognition, deserved or not.

The Vertex board has voted to accept it, so it looks like a done deal (unless
some
someone / some agency / some jurisdiction files some anti-monopoly legal
paperwork).

If $108M is 80% of what Yaesu feels that Vertex is worth then all of it is
about 135 Mil...

Anybody have any idea of Motorola's history as to what happens to
acquisitions?

I just hope that they don't kill off the Yaesu ham radio line.

Does this mean the first radio that comes out of the duo will be called the
Mo-Tex?
  Or the Ver-torola? or a Yae-torola? or a Mo-sue?

It smells a lot to me like a way for Yaesu to sell to the U.S. Military
easier... and Moto to outsource without looking like they sent jobs
off-shore?

They can now easily let the Yaesu Division specify that rigs are built
in the cheapest sweatshops in Asia-Pac while staying arms-length from
it, to avoid the political fall out.

Thoughts? Think I'm off-base?

Definitely interesting/entertaining if nothing else... whether we're
watching a good movie or a bad one remains to be seen until Act II, I guess.

Motorola buying Yaseu would be great for the land mobile market but
don't forget that Motorola specifically goes out of its way to not
make amateur products.

Thinking some more about it, another thing makes sense...

Agencies and others buying them, can say goodbye to the cheap P25 radios
Yaesu was starting to build.

Back to $2000 an HT, right where Moto likes it. :-(

Yup. That's kind of where my thinking was going.

At best someone serious about keeping the ham radio product line alive
will buy it and at worst, K7BV's positive attitude notwithstanding,
Yaesu amateur radio gear will be a memory in five years. But, I doubt
any current manufacturer would be sad to see Yaesu disappear. OTOH,
maybe MFJ will buy the division. OMG, I can see the ads now... I
think I'll have nightmares for a while. Shudder.

Whenever a large company aquires a smaller company they are usually
after one of two things, aquiring a presence in an established market,
or squashing competition.

At least right now I have all the Yaesu gear I need, I just hope it
keeps working.

You mean you have to ASK what Motorola will do to the
company once they buy it?

First thing will be to out-source it and move it to
Mexico; then they'll close it down, thus removing yet
one more piece of competition. Then they'll probably
try to buy Kenwood and do the same with them.

Just think of all the new stuff they will be able to
stamp MD and NLA.
