[Repeater-Builder] RE: DeskTrac question - An update

2009-04-28 Thread Mark
To date I have remedied one issue I was having - where my MaxTrac radio
itself would not power up correctly. With assistance from a Jedi Master
we have been able to breathe new life into the old MaxTrac. The Force was
with us! ;-)

I still have the issue involving the weird start-up with the DeskTrac. I
have acquired ed the Conventional DeskTrac RSS, so in the next couple of
days (when I get time) I'll try programming the DeskTrac with THAT and see
if it makes any difference. Stay tuned!

[Repeater-Builder] Re: DeskTrac question

2009-04-25 Thread Mark
I have been advised offline that my initial question was not clear enough.
Sorry about the confusion. I will attempt to rectify that now.

My experience has shown me that the DeskTrac RSS will read the DeskTrac AND
the MaxTrac radio completely, but will not allow frequency changes to be
made to the radio. (At least I was not able to do that with the RSS I have.
I have used MaxTrac RSS to program the radio itself, which is now working on
the freqs I want it to.) So, it appears that the DeskTrac RSS changes the
remote control interface configurations of the **DeskTrac itself** - we must
remember there are also Remote accessory items in the MaxTrac radio that
operate through the 16-pin accessory connector... Confused yet? ;-)

So my problem is I need to know how the MaxTrac radio is setup to properly
speak to the DeskTrac, and then also I need to know how the DeskTrac
itself is setup for remote control connection. Does anyone have the
DeskTrac RSS manual, or know if it is still available from Motorola?
(Considering the limitations of the DeskTrac RSS, I only assume it can't
be too thick a book...)

Thanks!

The Desktrac RSS is limited as what it can do, really only needed to program
the remote control board. You may have to use the Maxtrac RSS to read your
radio.

If the Maxtrac RSS does not 'find' the radio, check the setting on the switch
behind the front panel near the builtin mic. That selects 1) first radio 2)
second radio 3) the remote circuit board.

radio beeps seven times, and the channel display cycles rapidly through all
modes (1 thru 16) before settling on Mode 1. The radio seems to work OK
after this - TX and RX are fine. I have not tried to use a remote with the
DeskTrac, but that is my ultimate goal.

 My problems are:
 1) I have tried to read the DeskTrac configuration codeplug with DeskTrac
RSS, and it gives me an error message that there is nothing to read.
Anyone know what's up with that? Is it because I had to blank the MaxTrac
when I converted it to conventional mode? If so, does anyone have a
conventional DeskTrac codeplug I can program into the radio? Or do I need
to configure one from scratch and force it in? If so, what parameters will
I need to set to get the DeskTrac setup properly? and

 2) Do I need to configure the DeskTrac codeplug in order to stop the radio
from the beeping/channel cycling when it powers up? Since I don't power it
down very often, will it hurt anything just to leave it alone (other than
drive me nuts knowing SOMETHING is not right), knowing I may not be able to
 use a remote with it?

I have the Service Manual for the DeskTrac, but it makes no mention of
programming. (Of course, that's yet another manual Motorola can sell you...)

The MaxTrac RSS reads and writes the radio itself just fine - it's the
issues related the DeskTrac, and that annoying start-up glitch - that I'm
trying to resolve.

I really need to see a working codeplug from a conventional DeskTrac, in
order to know whether I have all the external accessory options set
correctly - and the remote options for the DeskTrac unit itself.
