<---Bottom line Mike is yes. You retain all the features (multitable,
etc) when the TKR is programmed for duplex operation and you let an
external controller do its thing.

[Repeater-Builder] TKR-850 Series I Interface Question

2010-04-21 Thread midcom.audio
I'm attempting to update an existing repeater system that currently uses a Hall
voter in tandem with a ComSpec TP-38 CTCSS repeater tone panel. The replacement
RF deck is a Kenwood TKR-850 Series I. The previous RF deck was a KSG-4500,
operating in a plain, dumb, duplexed TX / RX mode with no internal controller,
PL decode, etc. I used the ComSpec TP-38 in the repeat audio path following the
Hall voted audio to handle PL encode-decode, TOT, carrier delay/squelch tail,
etc.

Reading from the Repeater-Builder site, I came across the following comment
regarding use of an 850: "If you are using an external controller you set it to
"duplex base" mode, with COR on Aux out #1 and TOR (tone decode) on Aux out #2."

I would very much like to eliminate the need for the TP-38 external CTCSS unit
if at all possible, instead utilizing the TKR-850's INTERNAL PL encode/decode
capabilities, carrier delay, CW ID, etc. My questions is: If I program the 850
from "repeater" into "duplex" operation, do I lose all those features normally
found in "repeater" mode, rendering the 850 back to a "dumb" radio like its
predecessor? Assuming those features DO remain, how does one "break" the
normal, internal repeat audio path, since it will be necessary to route local
receiver audio out to the Hall voter for comparator operation?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike Simpson

Rick,

If your repeater is a version 1.0 it is covered under the recall service
bulletin they came out several years back. All you would have to do is take
it to a Kenwood service shop and they could fix it or send it to Kenwood and
they will fix it as well.

2007-09-30 Thread k7pfj
Hi Shane,

The two main differnaces between the V1 & V2 repeaters are yes the DTMF
control. I think the main differnace is that the new V2 repeaters have a two
stage final amp and the V1 repeaters hace a three stage amp.

Both repeaters can operate as a standalone repeater but the V2 can be
controlled. There are some other options that the V2 can do but the main
differance is the DTMF.

tell me the primary differences between the Version 1 TKR-850 KPG-66D
software repeater and the Version 2 TKR-850 KPG-91D software repeater?

I am particularly interested in the difference between DTMF over the
air commands using the internal controller. In other words; can the
original Version 1 software machines be used without an external
controller for ham use? I would only need the basic functions to be
controlled.. i.e. turn pl on or off, turn repeater on or off, and of
course have it send a cw id... no courtesy tone needed. Will the
version 1 internal controller be capable of these functions or only
the later version 2 firmware internal controller

I am aware of the PA issues etc but can't find a good source showing
the differences between the units having the different firmware.

Thanks and 73 de Shane KI4M

you can feed the external encoder's output into pin 8 (the Tx Data input)

Subject: [Repeater-Builder] TKR-850 - Where to get CTCSS enable signal?

In the course of connecting my new TKR-850 to my Arcom RC210
controller I found out that the repeater's "Squelch Control" ouput is
not actually a CTCSS squelch signal, it is a COS signal only. In
other words, the "SC" pin goes from 5v to 0v whenever ANY signal is
on the receiver channel, whether or not it has the right CTCSS with
it. The CTCSS is enabled for the channel in the programming (173.8),
but it only cuts off the audio. The CTCSS enable is not reflected on
the repeater's SC pin. When I change to the wrong CTCSS code on my
handheld, the receiver speaker is quiet, and no audio gets to the
controller, but the "busy" light on the front lights and the SC pin
goes to 0v.

I cannot see any other output pin for CTCSS enable ... so my option
appears to be either to use an external CTCSS decoder or to find a
signal in the receiver that does reflect the true CTCSS enable state.

Anyone deal with this issue on a TKR-850?

Thanks! Jim K7RNR

[Repeater-Builder] TKR-850 - Where to get CTCSS enable signal?

2004-04-14 Thread jfrohoff
