Re: [Repeater-Builder] Unknow Radio - Anyone can help?

2008-08-03 Thread Bill Till
Make sure you don't have any early model Mocom 70 (we're talking early
70s here). The initial production runs did not have the famous and
reliable cavity front end in the receiver but a series of copper cans
with coils inside. These were as broad as a barn door and resulted in
desense from any radio within a couple of city blocks. Motorola
rapidly responded to complaints and switched to the same type of
receiver front end as had been in the Motrac. Problem solved. A word
to the wise.

That being said, if you insist on using a Mocom 70, keep it cheap
because there are lots better, more reliable and more compact radios
in the used market these days.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Unknow Radio - Anyone can help?

2008-08-02 Thread Mike Morris WA6ILQ
The photo shows a Mocom 70 outer housing and a 4-frequency
control head plugged into it.
There was also a cable kit and a different control head that
allowed the radio unit to be installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Motorola had a habit of using outer housings with different internal units.
As an example, the Motran used a Motrac outer housing.
The MaraTrac radio was made using a Mitrek outer housing.

Can you post a photo or two of the interior ?

I went to the site and downloaded the zip file. Figure 8 in the PDF
document is a photograph of the interior. I compared that photo to a
similar photo in my low-band Mocom-70 manual, and they appear to be
identical. While there may be minor circuitry differences to satisfy
regulatory requirements of Brazil, the radio in question appears to be a
Mocom-70.

I have one of those also. It was given to me by someone that knew I did work
with radios. I remember seeing these back in the late 60's, or one very
similar to it. It had an extend feature on it. Mine is in the VHF band. It
would take a lot of CPR to get or keep them running I would think. Just
think of all those old old caps in there.
