Jim - What about all the spurs that Spectrums tend to put out? Jim B. Find an antenna relay out of a mastr pro or a Mitrek or whatever to put on the antenna inputs and wire it to the PTT. Put an indoor antenna on it so you don't have to worry about lightning protection, just enough to put a good signal into the repeater. Oh, and rip out the internal controller so it doesn't repeat... Well, considering the technical standards (or lack thereof) that Spectrum uses I gues ANYTHING is an improvement! ;) LOL Kevin -Original Message- From: JOHN MACKEY [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2004 6:02 PM To: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [RE: [RE: [[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Help]]] Kevin Bednar [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: SNIP At least I'm one of the people that cares enough to NOT put drifty piece of crap on the air. ;) Kevin, for that I applaud you!!! RE: [RE: [RE: [[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Help]]]
I've watched this thread and can't resist contributing my experiences. I supported a Spectrum SCR-1000 VHF repeater for my ham club for more than 3 years. It never operated to our satisfaction. Key problems: 1. Transmitter spurs caused by leaky caps that overheated. 2. Poor power supply design - Darlington TO-3 pass transistor would fail short circuit, placing 18V unregulated on the TX and RX. 3. Original receiver was obsoleted by Spectrum as it lacked adequate IF selectivity. The new RX wasn't much better. 4. Receiver pre-selector had a higher noise figure than the front end of the RX. The repeater actually heard better without the pre-selector. We finally dumped it and got a GE 100w Master. After we learned to improve cooling and run it at 80w rather than to reduce power in the PA, it was clean and worked flawlessly. My two cents...
