Re: [Rosegarden-user] Import sf2

The mappings of a soundfont vary from font to font.  Just based on the
name of the soundfont (Guitars-Universal), it may not match the GM or GS
standard mappings.

If you are fairly new to this sort of stuff what i bet you want to do
is to load the font into a synth to make some sounds.

This is done in qsynth itself and the process is fairly self explanatory.

Once the sf2 is loaded in the synth, there is no urgent need to
import it into RG unless you find it overly confusing to have RG
calling your presets by the wrong name.

What I'm, exactly, trying to achieve is to replace the Programs

I've tried using the Studio > Manage MIDI Devices Dialog to

many, many in the soundfont).

I'm using QSynth and have tried loading this soundfont in there

OK, apologies in advance for the newbie nature of the post.

Thanks for the replies. I'm a bit slow at the moment. There was a big yellow
thing in the sky all day, so I felt obliged to go out and make sure everything
in the countryside was OK :P

I'm also in the middle of some software work.

This is for giving the YoshimiPi a bit more heft. The sound will of course be
from Yoshimi which will go directly to a 16bit DA converter via ALSA. I'm
keeping everything as lightweight as I possible can.

I'd get the Rosegarden version from debian. The Pi is pretty slow compiling even
for Yoshimi - Rosegarden would take forever :(

Importing the sf2 in the 'manage midi devices' dialog has a mostly
decorative function. Ie, it only effects the the labels that RG assigns to

[Rosegarden-user] Import sf2

2021-02-20 Thread Mike Knott

Hi,

I'm struggling to understand the instructions on importing a soundfont
into Rosegarden. The Rosegarden Handbook says this is achievable
(instead of importing an rgd file).

What I'm, exactly, trying to achieve is to replace the Programs in the
Instrument Parameter List to those in the Guitars-Universal-V1.5.sf2.

I've tried using the Studio > Manage MIDI Devices Dialog to Import but

That's how I've always used it, as a MIDI sequencer for controlling
hardware midi synths oh god oh hell yeah..

I've never used the audio/jack stuff in rosegarden. It seems like jackd
isn't even installed on my system.

What's the position regarding using Rosegarden with no audio at all?
i.e. Jack not installed, and Alsa either already fully committed, or no audio
hardware connected?

I haven't tried this here because I don't have a spare machine, and don't want
to risk screwing up my current install.

Also, I want to keep this as simple as possible, as it will be used by people
with little or no understanding of the underlying architecture. Mostly they
will be working in the matrix editor, although a few brave souls might
experiment with notation :P

Indeed that is how the Windows version works - I just hacked out all the
audio stuff - although the Windows version does support RtMidi after a
fashion although it was never very fully implemented. I keep on meaning to
update it course but reasons...
