Anyone tried windows binaries from www.gaztronics.net/rsync.php?

Hi,

well, the topic says it all ;)
I want to know if it's safe to use them (yes, i know it's not safe,
but if someone says 'they fucked my computer' i will know i can't use
them. If noone says anything i will find someone to test them ;))

Thanks.

Moreover that website doesn't comply to the GPL license, as it has no
sources available at all.
(nor it says whichi patches were used)
I'd suggest *not to* use it, definitely.

ongoing progress

2003-09-25 Thread Jim Salter
A couple of ideas about things that would be nice to see in rsync:

1. a 0.5v option - something that would just show a progress either by file or by
megabyte, ie processing file 1,048 of 9,032 or processing: 832 of 3,459 MB. The
standard verbose is good for troubleshooting, but it's not very useful for gauging
how much has been done and how much is left when you're just waiting impatiently for a
job to complete.

2. I don't even know if this is feasible, but it would be GREAT - some way to query a
running rsync process to get a single line output similar to that described above, for
use e.g. in building web interfaces to automated backups, so that a CGI-driven
interface could auto-refresh itself every few seconds by querying the running rsync
for its status.

If I had any C++ skills, I'd be trying to do the above myself.

I wasn't aware that cygwin have rsync, that makes things much easier :)

all (knock on wood) although the combo of rsync and OpenSSH does seem to be
far more of a CPU hog under cygwin than under a real *nix OS.

I plan of using only server mode so that should not bother me.

Thanks for help :)

Refer to /usr/doc/Cygwin/rsync-2.5.6.README to install it as a windows
service:
Mini-HOWTO to use as a service:

1) be sure to have a valid /etc/rsyncd.conf (man rsyncd.conf for help)
2) to install service: (cygrunsrv --help for help)
~ cygrunsrv -I rsyncd -p /usr/bin/rsync -a '--daemon --no-detach'
3) to remove service:
~ cygrunsrv -R rsyncd

I'd be much more cautious of a deamon or service running in a windows
platform ssh'ed or not then I'd be concerned about such in a unix
platform my preference is to encrypt it all and let the OS/app sort it
at the endpoint. But, I'd certainly not feel safe, nor secure, running
any service cgywin or not in a production or exposed setting on any
windows platform.

Thanks,

You want to say you don't feel safe running Windows :)

In my case I plan to use rsync as patching utility - one person
have good file, one bad, so they run rsync to fix that.
So the server need to be run only for the time needed to fix the file.
Also, it not allways need to be run on Windows, but i can't exclude
that possibility. But allmost allways there's a need to run rsync
(client or server mode) on windows.

exit code definitions

2003-09-25 Thread Brenda_Finnegan
Hi !

I've spent countless hours search the internet to find a list of exit codes
for rsync. Can someone point me to a list of error codes and their
meanings?

this would be much appreciated !!

thanks !!

Bummer, I'd prefer to make my patch resository on a secarable unix
system, rather then a patch it ten times a week windos system, as the
intrgrety of the patches has to be maintainable.

Thanks,

Re: exit code definitions

2003-09-25 Thread Hardy Merrill
I didn't search the web for this - I just looked for
*.h files in the rsync source, and found error.h. I'm
guessing the contents of error.h is what you're after.
Check the rsync source out of CVS and view error.h.

HTH.
