[RollTideFan] Bush criticizes NCAA decision that affects FSU
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2130079 Bush criticizes NCAA decision that affects FSU Associated Press TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush criticized NCAA officials Tuesday for their decision to penalize Florida State University for using an American Indian nickname and symbols. The governor said the Seminole Tribe of Florida supports the school's use of its name and NCAA officials had insulted the university and Seminole Indians by calling the nickname hostile and abusive. I think they insult those people by telling them, 'No, no, you're not smart enough to understand this. You should be feeling really horrible about this.' It's ridiculous, Bush said. An NCAA official previously said other Seminole tribes were opposed to the use of the name. On Tuesday, NCAA spokesman Bob Williams said officials believe their decision was made on sound legal ground. We recognize this is an emotional issue in Florida, and in other parts of the country there are people who feel just as strongly being opposed, Williams said. The university has until Feb. 1 to make a formal appeal to the NCAA executive committee. Eighteen schools have an American Indian logo or mascot that will be prohibited by the NCAA during postseason events, starting in February. The nicknames will not be allowed on team uniforms and mascots will not be allowed to perform at games, the NCAA announced Friday. Cheerleaders and band members also will be barred from using American Indian nicknames or logos beginning in 2008. Attorney Barry Richard has agreed to represent the school in its case against the NCAA, Florida State President T.K. Wetherell said. Richard successfully led the legal challenge on behalf of President Bush during the 2000 election recount in Florida. If you have the Seminole Tribe and Gov. Bush on your side, how can you go wrong? said Florida State Vice President Lee Hinkle. Bush said the NCAA must have better things to do than sit around worrying about the nicknames adopted by its member institutions. How politically correct can we get? Bush asked. The folks that make these decisions need to get out more often. -- Rick ___ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics E-mail Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan - Wear a Cup! [RollTideFan] Sly is Full of Bama
Sure the dude coaches the bulldogs, but you can tell he bleeds Crimson. Nice article ... enjoy! Rick Croom On Planning Mississippi State Coach Sylvester Croom By Kirk McNair Date: Jul 28, 2005 In the spring of 2003, Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore had to find a new head football coach for the Crimson Tide. He interviewed three former Bama football players. Later Moore said the hardest thing he ever had to do was tell two of them he was not going to hire them. In May, 2003, Mike Shula was introduced as head football coach at Alabama. Athletics Director Mal Moore had selected Shula over two other former Tide players wholike Shulawere also assistant coaches in the National Football League. They were Richard Williamson of the Carolina Panthers, who had been a teammate and coaching associate with Moore at Bama, and Sylvester Croom, who had played center for Bama when Moore was the offensive coordinator and who had later coached with Moore for the Tide. On Thursday, at Southeastern Conference Media Days in Birmingham, Croomwho is beginning his second season as head coach at Mississippi Statewas asked what advice he would give to new coaches. Croom, a native of Tuscaloosa who had been running backs coach at Green Bay when he was tapped for his first job as a head coach, had a surprising answer. Any young coach who aspires to be a head coach, as he goes through the developmental process, should put on paper what he believes in and whatever his plan for being a head coach is. I think that is critical. That way he will be prepared when the job interview comes. That way hes prepared the first day he walks into the job and lets his staff and his players and the administration know exactly what he believes in. And I think he can better articulate his plan if he has already done that. Croom learned that lesson through experience. He told reporters gathered to hear SEC coaches and players talk about the upcoming season, I havent told a lot of people this. I think whats happened in my life as far as career and what has happened in the careers of a lot of coaches, very little is planned. My first opportunity to become a head coach came at an unexpected time. My interview with The University of Alabama came at an unexpected time. For years I had known exactly what I wanted to do when I got to be a head coach. But when that interview came, it was not on paper. It was not on paper. The night before I went for the interview, Mike Sherman (head coach at Green Bay) and the guys at Green Bay did a great job of helping me as I scrambled to get some things on paper. As it turned out, I didnt really need it at that interview. But after that interview and when I didnt get the job, I thought I might never get another chance to be a head coach. But I decided that if I did get another chance, I was not going to be caught short. So that summer I spent my entire vacation putting down on paper everything I believed in, everything I expected the coaches to do, what kind of uniforms we were going to have, everything. All of it was done the summer I didnt get the Alabama job. Thats what I did on my summer vacation the summer before I went to Mississippi State. It was all on paper. There was no hesitation about what we were going to do. None at all. So thats my advice to young coaches. When you become a head coach you had better believe, you had better have a plan, you had better totally believe in your plan. And thats why we wont ever deviate from the plan. We have to win, because I believe in it. Croom had some other references to Alabama. He noted that he had recently had a conversation with another coach regarding players. Croom said the coach was talking about the players on Alabamas 1992 national championship team. He said that Alabama had about 10 players starting that his school had not offer scholarships to. The point he was making is that you dont always have to have the great blue chip prospects. Find your kind of guys, find the guys that want to be in your program. Find the guys who believe in doing things the way you want to do them, coach them up, get them ready to play and then go out there and win football games. That's what we want to do. We're going to find Mississippi State type people. We're going to find guys who believe in doing things the Bulldog way. Our way is not the only way. Our way may not be the right way, but it's our way. And anybody who doesn't believe it needs to be somewhere elsecoaches, players, anybody. But the guys we put out there, they are going to believe. They are going to go out and fight for it every time they go out there. Croom was asked about the

[RollTideFan] Bush Nominates Judge John C. Roberts
President Bush chose federal appeals court judge John G. Roberts Jr. on Tuesday as his first nominee for the Supreme Court, selecting a rock solid conservative whose nomination could trigger a tumultuous battle over the direction of the nation's highest court, a senior administration official said. Bush offered the position to Roberts in a telephone call at 12:35 p.m. after a luncheon with the visiting prime minister of Australia, John Howard. He was to announce it later with a flourish in a nationally broadcast speech to the nation. Roberts has been on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since June 2003 after being picked for that seat by Bush. Advocacy groups on the right say that Roberts, a 50-year-old native of Buffalo, N.Y., who attended Harvard Law School, is a bright judge with strong conservative credentials he burnished in the administrations of former Presidents Bush and Reagan. While he has been a federal judge for just a little more than two years, legal experts say that whatever experience he lacks on the bench is offset by his many years arguing cases before the Supreme Court. Liberal groups, however, say Roberts has taken positions in cases involving free speech and religious liberty that endanger those rights. Abortion rights groups allege that Roberts is hostile to women's reproductive freedom and cite a brief he co-wrote in 1990 that suggested the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade the landmark 1973 high court decision that legalized abortion ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] [NON] Williams to report to Dolphins
Williams cleared to report Sunday to Dolphins By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer July 19, 2005 MIAMI (AP) -- Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams has been cleared by the NFL to report Sunday with the rest of the team for the start of training camp, a year and a day after he abruptly retired. The league's 2002 rushing champion decided to seek reinstatement after sitting out last season. He still faces a four-game suspension at the start of the season for violating the NFL substance abuse program. ``We've taken the steps necessary to ensure an on-time arrival, and he's excited about rejoining his team,'' said Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg. The NFL cleared Williams to report on the first day of camp without incurring a further violation of the drug program, league spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday. Williams acknowledged shortly after retiring that he failed drug tests and faced a suspension for testing positive three times for marijuana. Steinberg said Williams studied holistic medicine at a school in northern California from October to April and finished the first year of a three-year program, then spent April at a yoga center in India and became certified as an instructor. ``Both emphasize natural methods of healing and are opposed to the use of drugs and alcohol to alter consciousness,'' Steinberg said. After retiring, Williams lost more than 20 pounds on a vegetarian diet. Steinberg said his weight is back above 215, still below his listed weight of 226 on the 2004 preseason roster. Williams rushed for 3,225 yards and 25 touchdowns in two seasons with the Dolphins. He informed coach Dave Wannstedt of his retirement plans last July 23, one week before the start of training camp. A court later found the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner in breach of contract by retiring, and ordered him to repay the team $8.6 million. The team has not yet sought to collect the settlement, and new coach Nick Saban offered Williams another chance to play for the Dolphins, who begin workouts Monday. ``Ricky and coach Saban seem to have established a very good rapport in the past several months,'' Steinberg said. -- Roll Tide!! [RollTideFan] Tim Castille Update
http://alabama.scout.com/2/396545.html Tim Castille Update By Kirk McNair Date: Jul 18, 2005 Tim Castille could look back on what went bad, but prefers to look ahead to what he believes will be a good football season for himself and for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He has put in his work this summer getting ready. Tim Castille, like most of his Alabama football teammates, has spent the summer in Tuscaloosa, going to class and working out. Unlike most of them, though, Castille is doing more than just getting in shape. He has been rehabilitating. He suffered a knee injury against Tennessee last year, underwent surgery, and has not been in football gear since. It has been a good summer, he said. Theres some good work going on. I think they (the strength and conditioning coaches) are going to push us that last little bit, get everything they can out of us, before we start fall camp. Castille said, The leg is getting better. It looks good, although I know were still week-to-week and that the real test will come when we get into two-a-days. Pre-season camp is no long strictly two-a-days. Alabamas players will officially report on August 8officially, because virtually every returning player and most newcomers are already on campusand begin practice August 9. (The newcomers no longer have a couple of extra days to get acclimated before returning varsity players report. Alabama will have 105 players at its opening practice and will continue at no more than 105 until classes begin August 24. The first four days of practice are one-a-day workouts with no full-speed contact. The fifth day, August 13, is also just one practice, but is the first day of full contact work. Thereafter, there can be two practices on alternate days until classes begin. While most of the offensive skill position players have taken part in pass skeleton workquarterbacks passing and receivers and backs running pass routes against linebackers and defensive backsCastilles summer has been primarily strength and conditioning work. They dont want me doing pass skel because its a little risky, Castille said. Im able to do everything, but I need the knee to be stronger to get in and out of my cuts, he said. Straight-away, I still have the same speed. Kenneth Darby, who has spent the summer rehabilitating a sports hernia, said he had worked out with Castille in the first semester of summer school when both had early morning workout schedules. In the second half of summer school, Darby continued with morning workouts, but Castille had to shift to afternoon workouts because of his class schedule. Tim is looking good, said Darby. Hell be ready. Castille started as a true freshman in 2003 and split time as a fullback and short yardage halfback (with LRon McClain at fullback) last season. -- ROLL TIDE ROLL Rick ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] Darby ready
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050717/NEWS/507170378/1011 Darby ready to make up for lost time By Tommy Deas Sports Writer July 17, 2005 TUSCALOOSA | For about a month this spring, Kenneth Darby mostly sat in bed and fumed over not being able to play football. He watched replays over and over of the play in mid-November in a game against LSU where he sustained a sports hernia injury, with muscle separating from his pelvic bone. The injury wasnt properly diagnosed until after the season, and the University of Alabamas junior running back didnt undergo surgery until the end of March. Darby was cleared by doctors to participate in team summer workouts a month ago, and he expects to be ready when two-a-day practices begin in August. I was mad that whole time," Darby said of his surgery. I couldnt do nothing for a month." Missing spring practice just made Darby hungrier. Hes ready to make up for lost time as soon as he can start practicing for the 2005 season. I try to control myself and keep myself on a calm basis until I hit the field," the Huntsville native said. I think Im ready. I could be wrong, but I doubt Im wrong." Before he could begin working out with the team, Darby had to go through an excruciating rehabilitation process that included running while immersed in water and other unusual exercises. After the surgery, doing the rehab was pretty brutal," he said. Im not going to lie. They had me doing things I never did before. I guess it was because my muscles down there were so weak. It was worth it. Im getting better and stronger." Darby consulted regularly with former teammate Todd Bates, who had bounced back from a similar injury, during his rehabilitation period. I guess I got on his nerves calling him so many times," he said. I never got sore like that. I thought I might have hurt myself again, but he told me not to worry, that was part of it." Darby still struggles with the aftereffects of the injury and corrective surgery, but he can live with that pain knowing hes well on his way to full recovery. Just knowing what was wrong has been a big help. Can you imagine having a pain and you dont know what it is?" he said. They tell you what it might be. I felt better after the surgery. I felt better once they know what it was and got it over with. Its all me, really. Im day to day. Its up to me to inform them if Im too sore to run. If I feel uncomfortable, any kind of pain, I slack off, but I havent really had any problem. Im full-steam ahead. Im doing good. Im getting stronger. I get sore, but other than that Im doing good." Darbys recovery could be the key to Alabamas running game this season. With the loss of three starters from last years offensive line, having an accomplished running back will be a boost. The native of Huntsville ran for 1,062 yards last season despite seeing little playing time after sustaining the injury against LSU late in the season and not taking over the starting job until Ray Hudson was lost to a knee injury midway through the season. Darby also knows that a number of incoming freshmen -- signees Mike Ford, Roy Upchurch, Glenn Coffee and Ali Sharrief will be looking to take advantage if he isnt up to full speed when fall drills begin, but he isnt worried. Theyre young, hot-headed," he said. They think theyre going to come in and do all that. They dont know. Thats how I was when I got here. I was going to come in and run the show. Its different than high school. You find that out when you get here." Senior linebacker DeMeco Ryans is putting his money on Darby. He believes the newcomers will have a hard time supplanting Darby in the lineup. I work out with him every morning," Ryans said. Hes looking good. Hes going to be that horse running the ball for us this year. Its going to take a lot of hard work, a lot of dedication, a lot of will and want-to to beat him out." Darby is up to around 211 pounds from last years playing weight of 205. He hopes to be closer to 220 by the start of the season. He hasnt had the chance to fully test himself in off-season drills, but expects to employ a more physical running still this fall. I havent tried to carry nobody on my back, break tackles, spin off people," he said. I told DeMeco Im going to be a bruiser. Im not going to shake people off. Im going to run through them." [RollTideFan] Mark Gottfried Talks
http://www.rolltide.com/Mens%20Basketball/12911.asp Mark Gottfried Talks About 2005-06 Season SEC Hosts Mid-summer Teleconference Monday, July 18, 2005 Opening comment on returning starters from 2004-05 squad: Weve got a couple of key players coming back. Chuck Davis (forward) is a senior and were expecting him to have a really good year. And Ron Steele at the point guard had a lot of experience and had a terrific freshman year. And Jermareo Davidson (junior, center) I think is a guy who we really want to see step up his game a little bit. Weve got three starters back. Weve got some holes to fill, obviously, with (Kennedy) Winston and (Earnest) Shelton gone, two really good college players. Were going to have to try to replace their scoring. Were certainly going to miss those two. On who he perceives will pick up in scoring for Winston and Shelton: We dont know yet, to be honest. Weve got a guy named Jean Felix who played some last year. And then, really at the other wing position, were just wide open. We dont know yet. I dont think you take a Winston and Shelton combined off your roster and you dont take a hit. I just think its hard to recover without readjusting a little bit, and thats what were going to have to do. On whether he perceives any of his newcomers coming in and helping immediately, particularly Richard Hendrix: Hes going to be a good player. Hes a good freshman for us. Weve got another player, Alonzo Gee, who plays the wing a little bit and who can shoot it and who I think is a very good player. And then a junior college player named Ray (Ravone) George. Those three guys, probably more than anybody, have opportunities to get in there and fill those spots. On Chuck Davis and his improvement each year: One thing about Chuck, hes such an intelligent player, and hes really matured as a person which I think has helped his work ethic. Hes just really grown up a lot, and I think hes going to have a heck of a senior year. On Tennessees new coach, Bruce Pearl (a long-time Gottfried friend), as far was what Pearl may face, compared to Gottfrieds experiences, as a 1st year SEC coach: First of all, hes an excellent coach, and hes going to jump start that program. I competed against Jerry Green my first couple of years at Alabama and obviously with Buzz (Peterson). I think Bruce is going to do a great job. I think hes a great coach. His style is going to be a little different for people in our league. But like all of our teams in our league, youve got to find a way to get that top two or three on your side and stay there. Thats the thing for all of us outside of Kentucky, and Im sure they still feel that way, but we all look at Kentucky and think of them as being maybe up there a little different, but, outside of that, youve got to find a way to get yourself in that top couple on both sides. On some of the things (still referring to Pearl) that Gottfried did to get fans to look at Alabama as more than just a football school, etc., when he first came to Alabama: Ive never looked at our place as that being a negative, that football has done well. Thats a positive. We have tremendous fans, and all we need to do is get them excited about our sports, and weve got to be good enough and have a good enough product where they will get excited about it. You know, there are some schools that dont have the fans that a Tennessee or an Alabama has. So weve got them. We just need to convince them to get excited about basketball, and weve been able to do that at Alabama. And Im sure Bruce will do the same at Tennessee. On the Western Division race: I think its going to be wide open, I really do. We lost some key guys in Shelton and Winston. Mississippi State lost some key players. I think LSU loses Bass is key. I think Arkansas probably has the most back of a really talented, good, young team. I think Auburn and Ole Miss will both be better. So I just think its wide open. On possible experimental scenarios on the floor: I think its something we can look at (three post players-- two returnees on floor at same time), and I think at times well try to do that. I think we do have two good returning post players, and then weve got a very good player in Richard Hendrix coming in. One thing weve got to be careful of is, Chuck Davis last year in the post was as good of a post scorer, maybe as we had in our league. So I want to be careful not to move him away from the basket too often just so we can get those three guys on the court. I think we have to find a fine line there. But at the same time, its a good problem to have. We just need to figure out the best way to play it. -- ROLL TIDE ROLL Rick ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/sports/112141933581010.xmlcoll=2 Darby, Croyle set to go Friday, July 15, 2005 STEVE KIRK **News staff writer** TUSCALOOSA - Doctors have cleared 1,000-yard rusher Kenneth Darby to fully participate in Alabama's preseason football practices following offseason surgery to repair a pelvic injury, improving the outlook for the Crimson Tide's once-depleted offensive backfield. It's up to me - I've got to keep them informed if it's too painful, Darby said Thursday. Alabama's entire starting backfield was sidelined with injuries by the end of last season. But Darby and senior quarterback Brodie Croyle, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament onSept. 18, are 100 percent medically cleared. And junior fullback Tim Castille, who tore two knee ligaments Oct. 23, is in the final stages of rehabilitation, according to head athletic trainer Rodney Brown. Darby, a junior tailback who led the Tide with 1,062 rushing yards in 2004, admitted he still gets sore occasionally following the March 3 surgery to repair what's called a sports hernia, in which muscle tears away from the pelvic bone. He also said he hasn't tried his shaking moves or had a chance to take part in any contact drills but feels good and ready to try. Crimson Tide players are scheduled to report Aug. 8 for summer practices, although most of them, including freshman signees, are on campus attending summer classes and working out. The status of the offensive backfield going into the Sept. 3 season opener against Middle Tennessee has been an important topic for UA's coaches and trainers. Sophomore Aaron Johns was the only healthy scholarship tailback during spring practices in February and March, but depth has arrived in the form of highly touted freshman signees Roy Upchurch, Glen Coffee and Ali Sharrief. Darby said he's already begun to show them the ropes since they got to Tuscaloosa. Tailback Mike Ford of Sarasota, Fla., is among a handful of February signees not expected at UA this fall for failing to meet academic qualifying standards. Others could include receivers Nick Kyles and Desmond Jennings (who was drafted to play baseball), defensive lineman Antonio Forbes and defensive back Michael Ricks. Linebacker Prince Hall is yet to arrive, too. Tide coach Mike Shula over-signed in February, anticipating that several members of the class would go to prep school or junior college. At quarterback, Croyle said he has worked out full speed all summer without wearing a knee brace. Doctors cleared Croyle before spring practices, but Shula held him out of most spring activities except for 7-on-7 drills. Croyle weighs 211 pounds, which he said is 10 pounds heavier than he's played at before. Tests show his repaired right knee is now 3 percent stronger than his left knee. Croyle and freshman quarterback John Parker Wilson have worked out with Alabama's receivers three times a week since May, working on timing and pass routes. Croyle said receivers Tyrone Prothro, Matt Caddell, Keith Brown, DJ Hall and Ezekial Knight have not missed one throwing the entire summer. Freshman quarterbacks Jimmy Johns of Brookhaven, Miss., and Jimmy Barnes of Los Alamitos, Calif., are on campus. Croyle said the muscular Johns has been in Tuscaloosa for several weeks, looks more like a linebacker and is really wanting to make a push on John Parker (for the No. 2 position), Croyle said. And I think (the competition) will be good for all three of them, being close to the same age and having to prove themselves every year. Those are three extremely talented young guys. Less clear is the status of junior quarterback Marc Guillon. After battling Wilson for playing time in spring practice, Guillon has not participated in any of the summer throwing sessions and did not respond to an interview request from UA's media relations department this week. At fullback, Castille is close to medical clearance, having responded well to planting and cutting. He has had a slower recovery than Croyle, because Castille tore two ligaments - the ACL and the lateral collateral ligament. That has led to a little more caution with (Castille's) side-to-side stability, Croyle said, but it's looking like he's going to be ready, too. The Tide's insurance policy is junior fullback Le'Ron McClain, who started the final four games of last season. [RollTideFan] Instant Replay
I believe it was Joe who asked the instant replay question a couple days ago. Here is the rules that the Big 10 used in 2004 and the SEC has adopted it for this season ... ~~~ Only the replay official can stop play to review a call. All calls are reviewed by a replay official from the press box. If a play is in question, the replay official alerts the officials on the field and play is stopped. The replay official watches angles provided by the television coverage for that game. Calls involving clock and/or game management cannot be reviewed even if noticed by the replay official. Instant replay is used in all conference games. In non-conference games, the visiting team must agree to use the replay or it will not be available. The types of plays that are reviewable include plays that are governed by the sideline, goal line, end zone and end line, passing plays, and other detectable infractions, such as forward progress with respect to first down. Also... Instant replay was used in 28 of 57 potential games last season, and referees overturned 21 of 43 disputed calls. The average game time increased by only three minutes from 2003, to 3 hours, 16 minutes. ~~~ So there you have it. Roll Tide! [RollTideFan] New Poll Editorial
*I like the suggestion in the last paragraph. :)* * * *New poll marks only small step* The Bowl Championship Series has made a change in its formula to determine a national championship game, and it has a chance to work out well. Organizers have produced a new poll, which will replace The Associated Press in the BCS formula. The AP still will have a Top 25, but it has told the BCS that it can't use its rankings. My first thought was, Oh, great, another poll. I can't wait for the day when the new BCS poll, the AP rankings and the USA Today coaches' poll elect three different champions. At least that wouldn't be like some activities that have nearly every other school claiming to have won a national championship. But the new poll, which will be called the Harris Interactive College Football Poll, has an advantage over the AP and coaches' rankings. It won't start until a month into the season. It might work better to start two months into the season, but at least it won't start in the preseason. The problem with most rankings is that voters typically go back to the previous poll, move teams up when they win and drop them when they lose. So if you're ranked high in the preseason, you've got an advantage over lower-ranked teams. Auburn in 2004 provided a perfect example of this. Even though the Tigers never lost, they didn't rise higher than third in any of the preseason rankings because preseason No. 1 Southern California and preseason No. 2 Oklahoma never lost, either. While everything worked out, and the best team (Southern California) wound up winning the national title, it still smacked of unfairness that Auburn essentially got eliminated from the championship game in the preseason. The Harris poll plans to use 114 voters, which is almost twice as many as the AP and USA Today use. Last year, the AP had 65, while USA Today relied upon 61 coaches. The new poll will include former players and coaches, plus media representatives. Here's the key part: All 11 NCAA Division I-A conferences and independent teams will be represented by 10 voters each. Each was allowed to nominate 27 candidates for a position. I'm wondering if voters will feel pressured to vote the way their conferences want. For example, if the BCS had started this poll a year ago, would voters put forth by the SEC feel pressured to vote Auburn No. 1 or risk losing their spot in the mix? Will the Harris poll become like Congress where most simply follow the party line and disregard their own thoughts? However, the AP relies almost completely on newspaper reporters, and that's a problem, too. Last year, the AP voting list included 59 sportswriters, two radio reporters, a television reporter from Miami, Chris Fowler of ESPN, Craig James of ABC and a Sporting News reporter. Almost all newspaper reporters get to watch only one complete game on Saturdays — the one they're covering. They see only snippets of other games and usually spend Saturday night and/or Sunday morning hurriedly trying to catch up. It's hard to expect someone like that to know teams well enough to put forth a confident Top 25. Just about the only way is to use the old formula of moving up winners and dropping losers. And the coaches who vote in the USA Today poll are even worse off. They typically pawn off the job onto a sports information director, who moves up winners and drops losers. Somebody should come up with the Couch Potato poll. Those people who plop in front of the TV on Saturday morning and stay there until late into the night probably have a better handle on the Top 25 than most voting in the USA Today or AP polls. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] Public Enemy No. 1
*Public Enemy No. 1: Volunteers ’ Fulmer a key cog in upcoming Tuscaloosa trial* By Christopher Walsh Sports Writer July 03, 2005 JavaScript: newWindow = openWin( '/apps/pbcs.dll/art_tips?Date=20050703Category=NEWSArtNo=50703001SiteData=TLProfile=1011SectionCat=', 'SendToFriend', 'width=400,height=450,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,status=0,menuBar=0,scrollBars=1,resizable=0' ); newWindow.focus() TUSCALOOSA | It’s been almost a whole year since University of Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer chose to accept a $10,000 fine for skipping Media Days in Birmingham rather than risk being subpoenaed for a deposition. But soon, one way or another, he’s going to cross the state line into Alabama and almost certainly receive a rude welcoming. Between the jury defamation trial scheduled to start July 11, SEC Media Days at the end of the month or the Alabama-Tennessee football game at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Oct. 22, Fulmer can no longer avoid a return to the Heart of Dixie. Public Enemy No. 1 for Crimson Tide fans only tightened his grip on the position with the recent release of all documents in the $60 million lawsuit by former Alabama coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams against the National Collegiate Athletic Association and others. The records only further confirmed that key sources of information for both the NCAA and SEC in the Alabama recruiting scandal regarding Albert Means, came from those with Tennessee ties — including Fulmer’s confidential memos and his passing on information from recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper. Also revealed was that the SEC was investigating former Alabama booster Logan Young in 1998 and knew Means’ high school football coach, Lynn Lang, was asking for money long before the defensive lineman signed to play for the Crimson Tide. SEC investigator William Sievers testified that he asked Tennessee assistant coach Pat Washington to wear a wire to record Lang asking for money. Washington agreed to do so, but the school nixed the idea. Meanwhile, other Tennessee supporters were important cogs in the investigation, like booster Duke Clement, a drinking associate and rival of Young’s in Memphis, with their statements taken at face value. In his deposition, Sievers said regarding Clement: “A lot of his information was second-hand, but he also reported things that were said to him by Logan Young.” When asked by plaintiff attorney Tommy Gallion if he looked into Clement’s credibility, Sievers said: “I did not.” When asked by Gallion if he investigated NCAA secret witness Karl Schledwitz (a figure in the Butcher Bank scandal and recently named to the Tennessee Board of Trustees) or Clement, NCAA investigator Richard Johanningmeier said, “The information they provided, I had no questions about the credibility of the information they provided to us.” Attorney Joseph Buffington, who represented the University of Alabama, wrote in a letter to the school dated May 16, 2000, that he believed former Tennessee booster Roy Adams was feeding Sievers information. “We are extremely concerned that Mr. Sievers is admittedly receiving information from Roy Adams and asked questions based on that information. Mr. Adams likely will draw up additional cloak-and-dagger theories against Mr. Young. Are we to expect additional document requests, which really amount to nothing more than allowing someone like Mr. Adams to pursue a personal vendetta that the national office and the SEC knew all about Roy Adams where he was recognized as a troublemaker with no creditability whatsoever.” Sievers testified that he never interviewed Adams. He also never interviewed Cottrell during his investigation. Gallion: “You don’t know of anything Ronnie Cottrell did that was improper?” Sievers: “That is correct.” In 1999, Sievers was investigating claims the father of football player Eric Locke made against Tennessee. He reported his concerns to SEC commissioner Roy Kramer, who informed Tennessee, resulting in a booster being disassociated. “My question to you is very simply, why was this not done in the Logan Young affair at the offset?” Gallion asked during the deposition, echoing a theme of his clients’ lawsuit. In addition to the Tennessee coaching staff and boosters and Culpepper, Johanningmeier also interviewed former Tennessee assistants David Cutcliffe and Kurt Roper. Of them, Johanningmeier said the only person who could provide any evidence that Young paid for Means to go to Alabama was Culpepper, who alleged that Young bragged about it during a car ride they shared. Johanningmeier interviewed Tennessee coaches on March 13, 2000, more than six months before Alabama was notified an investigation was underway, and well before Means played his first game at Alabama. The Volunteers’ coaches said that they believed the following players had been paid or influenced, directly or indirectly, by Young: Michael Myers,

(Only a playoff will solve this problem. If not a playoff then they should revert back to the way things were before Roid Kramer came up with this lame-brain BCS idea. Rick) BCS officials like direction Harris Interactive's poll would fill void in 'human' element By B.G. Brooks, Rocky Mountain News ENGLEWOOD - Unless the pool of prospective new voters unexpectedly runs dry, the Bowl Championship Series has settled on the alternative poll it will use to help crown college football's 2005 national champ. BCS coordinator Kevin Weiberg said Tuesday the Collegiate Commissioners Association generally is comfortable with what is being done by Harris Interactive - the polling organization commissioned last month to study the feasibility of creating a new Top 25 to replace The Associated Press poll in the contentious BCS formula. The 11-member CCA, plus Notre Dame, is conducting its summer meetings here this week. Weiberg said The Harris BCS Poll - not yet the official name - likely will include just over 100 voters selected from among former college players, coaches, administrators and members of the media. Harris sent out letters last week to prospective voters to gauge their interest in participating, and once that recruitment process is complete Weiberg said the BCS would officially announce the latest tweak to a system that has drawn fire almost since its inception. We just need a little more time to let Harris do its work, said Weiberg, commissioner of the Big 12 Conference. Right now we are on a course to go forward; there's enough of a consensus among our group. . . . This is the path we're on. In a release last week, the BCS said an announcement could be made in mid-July. Weiberg said Tuesday it could be finalized soon, but added, I'm not going to stand here today and say we're going to eliminate all the controversy going forward. In December, AP announced it was withdrawing its poll from the BCS process. The reason: Many AP voters expressed discomfort at being news makers in what almost annually has evolved into a controversial process. AP's exit left the BCS ranking system with the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll as the only human element used in the process that determines which two teams compete for the BCS national championship. Earlier this month, ESPN backed out of the coaches' poll, which also has come under criticism because of the participants' decision to reveal their votes. However, some of that criticism was alleviated last month with the American Football Coaches Association's announcement that coaches would reveal their voting for the critical final BCS tabulation. Likewise, Weiberg said only the final Harris poll would be revealed, adding that voters could make their weekly voting public if desired. Also, there could be poll taken following the BCS championship game, as the AP does now. Weiberg and two fellow conference commissioners - the Mountain West's Craig Thompson and Karl Benson of the Western Athletic Conference - cited the Harris organization's longstanding polling credibility as positives in the altered BCS formula. I like the objectivity involved. . . . For the most part, you're talking about people who don't have a horse in the race, said Thompson, noting that Harris has a stand-alone reputation in the polling business. With the change, There might be reason to be a little apprehensive (but) Harris has credibility, added Benson, who claimed he never doubted the fairness of past BCS systems. With the alternative poll, the BCS selection process will retain its two human elements and six computers. Each human poll accounted for one-third of a team's BCS ranking, with the machines offering the final third. Weiberg expects a similar weight once the Harris poll is part of the formula. Before last season, the BCS announced that the AP and USA Today/ESPN polls would be given more weight than in seasons past, an alteration that amplified the significance of AP's eventual withdrawal from the process. The AP Top 25 included 65 media voters, while 63 coaches voted in the USA Today/ESPN poll. Harris Interactive, which is based in Rochester, N.Y., and conducts The Harris Poll, reportedly issued 111 inquiries to former players, coaches, administrators and media to explore interest in the latest BCS endeavor. [RollTideFan] Million $$ Man
Tide’s Gottfried gets new contract, $200,000 raise http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050626/NEWS/506260391/1011 By Cecil Hurt Sports Editor June 26, 2005 TUSCALOOSA | Mark Gottfried now has everything a college basketball coach could want: a new contract, a raise and a strong commitment from the school administration. The University of Alabama head coach has signed a contract extension that will make him the first basketball coach in UA history to earn $1 million per year. The new six-year deal, which extends his previous contract by two years. However, Gottfried said the most gratifying thing was the commitment shown by the UA administration, both with the contract extension and with the renovation of Coleman Coliseum. The Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees has approved the deal, which runs through June 30, 2011. It increases his compensation from $800,000 annually to $1 million annually, a level that the committee said was “commensurate with the success of the men’s basketball program under his leadership and in line with the current market value of other SEC head coaching positions. “I’m very appreciative of what Dr. Witt and Mal Moore have done, Gottfried, 41, said on Saturday. “They have made a commitment to basketball that I am very grateful for. “I’m also very grateful for our players. We’ve recruited good kids that want to win, but also want to graduate. I want to win on the court as much as anyone, but I don’t want to do it if the kids aren’t graduating. I feel we can do both here, but it starts with recruiting good kids. “My goal here is the same as it was the first day I took this job. I still carry that dream that we can win a national championship here. I had that dream as a player, and I continue to have it today. “From a personal standpoint, I, my wife and my family all hope that we can be here for a long time. That’s what we’re committed to doing. Gottfried, a former Crimson Tide player, became the head coach at UA in 1998. He has 143-83 record at Alabama, and a 210-107 record in his career, which includes three years at Murray State. Alabama has made the NCAA Tournament field for the past four seasons. Over the past five years, the Crimson Tide has averaged 22.6 wins per season. Additionally, all 17 seniors who have completed their final year of eligibility at Alabama have earned their degrees from UA. “First, I want to say how much I appreciate Coach Gottfried’s accomplishments, said Mal Moore, Alabama’s director of athletics. “Two years ago, by reaching the Elite Eight, he brought our team where no team in the history of our men’s basketball program had ever gone. Last year, we won our (West) division in the SEC. Those accomplishments are a tribute to Coach Gottfried and his staff. “Attendance has been increasing in each of the past few years. “Our graduation rate and our APR (academic progress rate) in men’s basketball was one of the top two or three in the country. That has been a goal of our entire athletic department, but Coach Gottfried has been ahead of the curve in that area. That’s very important to me and also very important to our president (Dr. Robert Witt). “This is a part of our overall commitment in basketball. We are doing a total renovation of Coleman Coliseum that will support several of our men’s and women’s sports, but I think that the renovation will give Mark a tool to take our program to an even higher level. Kentucky coach Tubby Smith, who earns approximately $2.5 million per year, is the highest-paid coach in the SEC. In addition to raising his compensation, the new contract also increases the buyout payment for Gottfried should he leave UA during the term of the contract. The new buyout figure was not immediately available. (Reach Cecil Hurt at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 205-722-0225.) -- ROLL TIDE!! Rick Baumhower lauds Shula's leadership http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/sports/columns/050615.shtml TUSCALOOSA — He played for college legend Paul Bear Bryant. He played for NFL legend Don Shula. He knows the positive impact strong leadership can have on a group, whether it be a football team or corporate business. Former Alabama and all-pro Miami Dolphins nose tackle Bob Baumhower says third-year coach Mike Shula has righted the Alabama football program and fans can expect big things in the near future. He was careful with his words when discussing the tainted coaching tenures of Mike DuBose, Dennis Franchione and Mike Price. What Mike (Shula)has done is come in and change the mentality of the team and the program as a whole, Baumhower, now a restaurant chain owner, said as a guest at the Alabama Sports Writers Association's convention here Monday. I feel Coach (Gene) Stallings had the program where it needed to be. But after he left, leadership issues no doubt hurt the program. It doesn't matter if your product is a business or a college football team, without high standards there are going to be some problems. If there are compromises, there are going to be consequences. What we have in Shula, again, is an uncompromising attitude. He is focused, intense, tough and a real leader. Baumhower, an all-decade SEC team member who recorded 153 tackles during his Tide days, says he feels the Tide ebbed to a new low in its 40-38 loss to Central Florida in front of 83,000 stunned home fans on Oct. 28, 2000. In the game, Central Florida scored 27 unanswered points before coming back to boot a game-winning field goal. That's about as low a point the program has ever been in that I can remember, said Baumhower, a former two-time All-SEC performer. He noted the 19-16 Tide loss to Northern Illinois of the Mid-America Conference on Sept. 20, 2003, in Shula's first year was not indicative of Alabama football, but perhaps more of a result of the NCAA limitations on scholarships. Limited scholarships are leveling the playing field in college football, said Baumhower, who played in 125 consecutive games for the NFL's Dolphins from 1977 to 1984. He was also the NFL's defensive rookie of the year in 1977. The MAC is getting tougher, and state schools like Troy and UAB are putting some good players out on the field. There aren't enough scholarships to go around for all the players who want to play here. He said the limited scholarships place even more pressure on coaches. You have to get the right leader for the program even more so today, Baumhower said. The coaches are the ones who will make the difference. ... But I can see the players here love Mike. They want to put it all out on the field for him. I saw a lot of positive things from the team last year. They didn't tire and quit in the fourth quarter. That says a lot about Mike. He's young and good looking, and because of that I think he is underestimated. I talked to Lee Roy Jordan this week and he says he feels real good with Mike running the program. Baumhower said Shula's high morals set him apart in recruiting prep players. He has high standards, high values and knows how to work the mommas when he visits with the kids. The fact that he is good-looking sure doesn't hurt. ... The guy is a winner. Baumhower says he stays busy with his restaurants and promoting the Cruisin' with the Tide program, which benefits the Crimson Tradition Fund, but not too busy to ignore his first love, Alabama football. Coach Bryant said there needs to be surprises in the recruiting class and on the field to have a great year, Baumhower said. A healthy Brodie (Croyle) will be bigger and stronger. If you have a strong defense, you will have an opportunity to win close games and have a good season. If we get some luck and keep people on the field healthy, we could have a reason to be proud again this year. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

(or: Why it sucks to be a responsibleadult) Had to bust my ass this AM at work to get through as quickly as I could. I had to go to the downtown courthouse and get my truck registered, etc... It was the last day I could do it all without penalty. I've been to the courthouse 2x already this month but ran into 4 hour lines and very foul county workers. I got to the courthouse at about 12:15 today and parked on the west side of Linn Park. I had to walk to the AmSouth building to get some cash to pay for my registration. On the way we (a girl who works for me and me) passed the north side of Linn Park where Mayfield ice cream had 2 tents up and was giving away free ice cream. COOL! Got a little ice cream and headed to get cash. We walked back up to the south entrance to Linn Park to cut through to the courthouse. There was a tv camera there and an assload of people in line for something other than ice cream. I stopped and looked and saw Coach Shula about 3 feet from me. I about shit. I had no idea he was was going to be there signing autographs. Now, the decision. Be a responsible adult and get my truck registered and all that shit done and get home in time to take my daughter to the airport or go to my truck, grab my football and Sharpie (which I keep in my truck for just such an occasion) and get an autograph. If I go to the courthouse first I risk the chance of missing the autograph session. If I get the autograph I will probably not have time to get my shit done at the courthouse (they are so speedy there) and get to the airport in time to see my daughter off. I decided that I am a damn adult today. I took the responsible route. I got my shit done. I missed a VERY rare opportunity to get Coach Shula to sign my ball (stop snickering Krut). I made the right choice but that leads me back to the subject of my e-mail: JUST DAMN!!! Oh well. Maybe I'll have that opportunity in another 10 years or so. Fulmer was scheduled to meet with reporters on Thursday at the annual SEC event in Birmingham, along with players Kevin Burnett and Michael Munoz. Instead, he's following the advice of his attorneys and staying put in Knoxville. Fulmer has been criticized for giving the NCAA information about Alabama recruiting four years ago. [RollTideFan] Improved Pass Rush?
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040724/NEWS/407240346/1011 Anderson hopes to lead improved pass rush By Christopher Walsh July 24, 2004 Often it all comes down to that first step. Anticipate the snap, burst off the line of scrimmage, get the opposing offensive lineman on his heels. Thats what being a defensive end is all about when it comes to pass-rushing. Once you get that edge, theres really nothing he can do, University of Alabama junior defensive end Mark Anderson said. With an apparently strong linebacking corps in place and three returning starters in the secondary, if theres one area the Crimson Tide would like to improve defensively this season its pass rushing. Last season, Alabama had only 26 sacks, down from 44 in 2002. In addition, senior Anthony Bryant, named second-team All-SEC earlier this week, is the only returning starter on the defensive line at tackle. Gone are both ends: Antwan Odom, who led the team with eight sacks last year, departed early for the National Football League, and Nautyn McKay-Loescher was drafted into the Canadian Football League. Nevertheless, their replacements Anderson and senior Todd Bates -- appear poised to make smooth transitions into the starting lineup. Im working on speed and getting my weight back up, Anderson said. Im at about 250 (pounds), and I want to be no less than 255. Actually, Anderson wants to weigh closer to 265 for the start of two-a-day practices in early August because hell drop pounds in the Alabama heat. Its an important consideration for a player whos undersized for his position. Although Anderson is 6-foot-4, he played last season at 239 pounds. In making six starts and appearing in every game, Anderson had 48 tackles, 2.5 sacks and seven quarterback hurries. Those are pretty good numbers for a backup, but Anderson, who has 4.5 career sacks, isnt considered a backup any more. We want a little quickness, a little more speed, a little more athletic, Anderson said. Everyones working hard. Ive never seen everyone work this hard. Bates, meanwhile, had to sit out last season because of a suspension. As a freshman and sophomore, he had just two sacks. Both will be heavily counted on for Alabamas defense to take that next collective step. In addition to their rigorous weight-room regiment this offseason, the defensive ends have also been doing number of sprints and drills _ like five repetitions of 200 with a jump rope _ to try and improve that initial burst. The ability to show a quick first step was a primary reason why Anderson was named the most improved lineman after the 2003 spring practice, and how Bates won the same award this past spring. Bates also won the MVP linemen award for the 2004 A-Day Game. If one should falter someone like Chris Harris, a sophomore from Tuscaloosa who saw spot duty last year, Wallace Gilberry, Keith Saunders, Chris Turner or Travis McCall would likely get a long look. Either way, the better the backups play the better the rotation because more is definitely better when it comes to pass rushing. You might see some differences here and there, Anderson said. I think were going to be a little better and more exciting to watch. ROLL TIDE! Rick __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup! [RollTideFan] Roach is ready
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040724/NEWS/407240347/1011 Roach ready to compete for wide receiver spot By Josh Bean July 24, 2004 Will Roach arrived at the University of Alabama with the intention of making an impact as a freshman. Today, armed with a redshirt year of experience, the former Brooks High School standout has acquired a different perspective. When I first came in, I didnt know the techniques and stuff like that to run the routes, Roach said. Actually, Im glad I redshirted now. Now that Ive got a year under my belt, I know a whole lot better about the offense. I know a whole lot more about being a wide receiver. I know what to do and what not to do. Roach, the younger brother of Crimson Tide middle linebacker Freddie Roach, will try to earn a spot in the Tides wide receiver rotation when fall practice begins Aug. 10. Until then, Roach continues rehabilitation on a left shoulder injury that limited his progress during spring practice. Roach tore the labrum in his left shoulder during a passing drill before spring practice began. He waited until after spring drills to have surgery to repair the injury. That meant the past few months has been filled with rehabilitation, as well as voluntary passing workouts at least three days a week. Ive just been rehabbing my shoulder and trying to get back in the groove, Roach said. Everything has been going good. Ive been lifting weights and getting stronger. The shoulder injury limited Roach in the spring, a setback for a player battling for playing time. The Crimson Tide returns just one wide receiver -- Tyrone Prothro -- who has caught a pass in a game. Prothro caught 16 passes and scored a touchdown a year ago as a freshman. To see Tyrone out there as a freshman, it gave everybody a little bit of a boost, Roach said. The Tides leading returning receiver is running back Tim Castille, who caught 21 passes in 2003. That means unproven players like Roach, Matt Caddell and Marcus McKnight will get a chance to play this season. Senior wide receiver Antonio Carter has missed the past two seasons with injuries, but he could provide a stablizing influence if he can play this season. He has caught 106 passes in his career, good enough for fourth on the Tides all-time list. Were going to be extremely young, Tide coach Mike Shula said earlier this summer. Were going to be playing a lot of sophomores, redshirt freshmen and probably even some true freshmen. Weve got eight starters back on defense and six on offense, so weve got some shoes to fill. We intend to have competition at every position once the season begins. With spots in the wide receiver rotation up for grabs during fall drills, Roach knows he needs to prove his shoulder is healthy. With the lack of receivers weve got right now, I think there will be a lot of rotation going on, he said. Roach said quarterbacks and receivers have been working together at least three days a week this summer, and he said hes been impressed with quarterback Brodie Croyle. Croyle injured his left shoulder during the 2003 season and had offseason surgery. Croyle -- like Roach -- was limited during spring practice. Brodie, hes great, Roach said. His arm looks fine to me. Hes putting the ball on the money, and its coming fast. Everybody is trying to get used to it. Thats good news for an Alabama team trying to rebound from a disappointing 4-9 season. Roach said the Tide is trying to forget about 2003 and concentrate on the season at hand. To me, its only pressure if you let it be pressure, he said. Were just going to go in, relax and play football. Thats what its all about -- just play football. ROLL TIDE! A couple of good articles from today's paper...the second one is on it's way... http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/sports/columns/040721.shtml Progress is showing in Tuscaloosa TUSCALOOSA The brief stretch of Bryant Drive allows a panoramic view of the north end of The University of Alabama campus. As Mal Moore's white Infiniti reaches it, one of the more powerful men in town can't help but point and smile like a child on Christmas morning. That's nice, isn't it? asks Alabama's athletics director. Only a few years ago, the area off University Avenue surrounding the school's student recreation center was bare. Now there's a renovated rec center, a softball stadium, a re-furnished soccer stadium and a sparkling new tennis stadium nearing completion by the end of August. The view doesn't include the new academic center being constructed in Bryant Hall. Or the new athletic building that will house the football team's new meeting rooms, weight room and dressing rooms when practice starts in a few weeks. Or the new golf clubhouse at Old Colony, or the new entrance to the school's track. Or the blueprints for sweeping changes to Coleman Coliseum and the north end of Bryant- Denny Stadium. Like a proud grandparent, Moore likes to show visitors every last project. He tours the sites, answering Hey, chief greetings from builders while maneuvering his 64-year-old frame through sawdust and boards. Call it a new day for Alabama sports, hopes and dreams of championships being born in the hammers and hot sun of a summer afternoon. It marks quite a change for a department that for so long clung to its roots as signs of a better day. For the first time in a long time, Alabama is looking to the future to keep up, not just its tradition. When he was passed over for the athletics director job for Bob Bockrath, Moore suggested the university needed these facilities to be competitive in recruiting. So now, this is Moore's legacy to his alma mater, and it's the most important part of his role as athletics director. This is what Moore envisioned when he took the job and survived perhaps the most tumultuous period in the school's athletic history. In his mind all this construction work is the key to Alabama's rebirth. These are things that, over a 10- or 12-year period, this where we've fallen behind and other schools have pulled away from us, Moore said. But I fully expect, and I've said to our coaches, and they expect greater things from their programs. I certainly do. Given the recent NCAA sanctions, coaching changes and losses, Alabama football has taken its hits. But the entire athletics department hardly took a blow like the one it received this past winter. Each year, the Director's Cup ranks the top athletics programs in the nation according to sport-by-sport finishes. At one point, Alabama was last in the Southeastern Conference and 80th in the United States. Actually, the spring sport totals pushed Alabama to 41st in the final 2003-04 standings, ninth in the SEC ahead of Kentucky (45), Ole Miss (64) and Mississippi State (67). But the backlash from the earlier report spawned negative headlines, some subtle, some not. Moore answers the criticism by pointing to the new facilities, emphasizing their role in redeeming Alabama's reputation, damaged so much by the NCAA run-in and the Mike Price scandal. The one area most damaging to us has been the academic center, Moore said. Tennessee, three, four, maybe five years ago, built an outstanding academic center for their athletes. Georgia built one. LSU dedicated a brand new one about four years ago. Florida has one. Basically, we did not have an academic center. When recruits come in here of all sports, not just football, they recognize this. When we're showing recruits around, that has been a weakness that we've had, but we're making the difference in all of that. Roll Tide!! [RollTideFan] Interview with Coach Moore
http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/sports/040721/moore.shtml Moore: Tide at crossroads AD looks for better times ahead TUSCALOOSA It's an interesting time to be at Alabama. There are a lot of changes. Basketball is surging. Football isn't what it once was. New buildings are popping up in every direction. It's a turning point for the university, but a constant Mal Moore is still here. He's directing construction, guiding the football program back from the brink and defending the school's reputation against a poor finish among Southeastern Conference athletics programs in the latest Director's (formerly Sears) Cup standings. In many ways, he's still the same football coach standing in paintings alongside Paul Bear Bryant tough, gruff, determined and committed to the Crimson Tide logo that dots his temporary office in a construction trailer outside Coleman Coliseum. Moore sat down for an interview with DECATUR DAILY sports writer Gentry Estes last week to discuss the recent changes in the Crimson Tide athletics department and his plans for the future. Q: After a successful season ended for men's basketball, ties with coach Mark Gottfried and Ohio State were brought up. At any point, have y'all talked about an extension or raise? A: Six, eight months ago, he signed his contract. He just signed it, and within that contract are really good bonuses if you go to the NCAAs, if you win the conference, if you go to Final Four, if you go to this. Every step of the way, he was rewarded for a good year. Q: Going into football, what are your feelings as far as confidence in football coach Mike Shula, his staff and the direction of the program? A: Well, I have a very good feeling about the situation with Coach Shula and his staff. The recruiting that took place this past year and the facilities that are coming online that will support these coaches in the next years to come. I think a great strength of Coach Shula and his staff is recruiting, and this will enhance that. At the same time, I fully recognize we're coming off of penalties of the NCAA that has damaged the team in numbers. We don't have the numbers, but I think we have an outstanding group of young men that will compete and will win their share of the games. Q: Do you think Coach Shula still has a blank check from the Bama Nation, or do you think the pressure might kick up a notch from fans this season? A: I know this. I feel very strongly about him. I think he will be an outstanding coach before he leaves Alabama, and he will have an outstanding career here. He has taken on a job at a very difficult time in difficult situation. I appreciate him for that, and I hope that our fans do. Q: The football schedule has changed a bit in the next couple of years, but when in the foreseeable future do you see scheduling back a Penn State or an Oklahoma or a school of that caliber? A: We have Penn State scheduled in '13-14. I think the 12-game seasons dictate that a little bit. In 2008 is a 12-game and 2009 is a 12-game, which would allow a return (visit). That would give us the opportunity to pick up someone like a Penn State. I've said this many times. My opinion on playing Penn State or playing Southern Cal or playing Notre Dame or Oklahoma, we want to play those guys in the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl. That's when you want to play those guys. Q: In terms of your time here, how much longer do you see yourself being here, doing this? A: I have said all along that I want to get us through this building program. We start on the (Coleman) Coliseum in October of this year. We'll start on the (Bryant-Denny) Stadium in January of this coming year. I started all that, and I would like to see it through. And then we'll go from there. I feel good at present. My health could be a factor. For the university, I feel that I'm contributing right now in those areas and hopefully, I can finish it out. Q: A lot was made out of the Sears Cup standings this past year. How accurate a representation of the athletic department do you think that really is? A: No question, it gives you an indication of the success of a program at that particular time. Even though I think we've had success this year, particularly with our basketball program going to the Elite Eight and I think our gymnastics ended third in the nation, the effects of the NCAA has been a factor in not just football or basketball, it affects you every now and then across the board. I think this is something that we're seeing. We're now out of the penalty phase of it where football is recruiting and we're back eligible to go to bowl game. The facilities that we're doing, enhancing, it's not that we're going way ahead of other people. We're just catching up to other people. Q: The situation with football gained such notoriety, do you feel as though the program has turned the corner now? A: I think we're, without

[RollTideFan] nonBama Coaching Hot Seats
http://www.postherald.com/sp072004.shtml At least five coaches on the hot seat By STEPHEN SMITH SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE When it comes to college football, July brings on both the heat of summer and the heat of expectation. Maybe that's where we get the phrase on the hot seat from coaches in the seat of leadership exposed to the expectations of fans, alumni, the media, their own players and themselves. If the program has tasted success in the past, everyone is hungry for a return. Although just about every coach in NCAA Division I feels the pressure from time to time, here are five places where the heat may be at its hottest: # Texas: You'd think that three straight 10-win seasons wouldn't leave a fan base dissatisfied that is, until you look behind the numbers. Hidden within a combined 30-6 regular season record over that time span are three straight (four straight, actually) losses to Oklahoma by a combined score of 114-40, two trips to the Holiday Bowl, no Big 12 titles and no Bowl Championship Series bowl bids. With a favorable schedule and 14 returning starters, it looks as if another 10-win campaign is in the cards for the Longhorns. But if Texas coach Mack Brown can't reassert control over Bob Stoops and the always-loaded Sooners, last season's rumors about Steve Spurrier taking over in Austin could become a reality. # Tennessee: Coach Phil Fulmer's 1998 national championship, coupled with a dramatic home win over the hated Florida Gators that year, might have spoiled Rocky Top denizens just a little bit. So much so that 15 straight bowl appearances and a 59-16 record over the past nine years in the rugged Southeastern Conference just aren't getting it done for them. A new nemesis, the Georgia Bulldogs, has beaten the Volunteers four straight times and now have a stranglehold on the SEC East title and the path back to the BCS. Thirty-two straight wins over Vanderbilt and Kentucky are nice, but restless people in positions of power sometimes make foolish decisions that only constant national championship contention can avoid. # Florida: Some believe that when the old ball coach took his ball and went up to Washington a few years ago, he may have taken the Gators' mojo with him. Of course, this isn't fair to Florida coach Ron Zook, the man who had to step into Spurrier's rather sizeable shoes in Gainesville. To his credit, he has kept the Gators competitive and even beat eventual national champion LSU in Baton Rouge last season. But Zook's record at Florida after two seasons is a very unGator-like ordinary 16-10, and Swamp-dwellers don't like anything that makes them look ordinary especially in the Swamp, where the Gators lost a surprising three times last season. Trips to Tennessee and Florida State and back-to-back home games against Arkansas and LSU could hurt Zook's prospects for a fourth season with the Gators. # Penn State: Three losing seasons in the past four years at Happy Valley is incredible when you consider that before 2000, head coach Joe Paterno had a grand total of one in his career with the Nittany Lions. But Penn State is better than its 3-9 mark from last season. Besides a 31-point blowout loss in the season finale against Michigan State, PSU had three losses by a touchdown or less and three more by less than 15 points. Paterno's 339 career wins at PSU give him the right to choose his own time to step down, but another losing campaign may embolden the school to make the decision for him. # Notre Dame: Ty Willingham's second season in South Bend went the way a lot of people expected his first to go badly. But 2002's success left the green-shirted Fighting Irish faithful unprepared for five wins last season. Naturally, Willingham can expect no patience from them as he begins to get the players he needs to run his West Coast offense. Even though the Irish play the consistently toughest schedule in the country, the fans want to win right now, and worst of all, they think they always should. Fortunately, Notre Dame has 14 starters back from last season's 5-7 squad that should be chomping at the bit to make amends because expectations for this team are low as unusual as that is to say about the Irish. [RollTideFan] Ray Ray Article
http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/sports/040719/hudson.shtml Time is now for Hudson UA back wants improved season By Gentry Estes DAILY Sports Writer TUSCALOOSA Ray Hudson knows enough to realize this year is different. The Alabama senior tailback also thinks people still don't understand how awkward and rough last summer really was. We really don't understand, to tell the truth, Hudson said. It's a lot easier learning a couple new things than a whole playbook. That's hard. With head coach Mike Shula and his staff around for a second year, there's an air of comfort around a program mired in so much recent turmoil and coaching shifts. It's just more stable, sophomore running back Tim Castille said. You don't have as many things to worry about. Like the bulk of their Crimson Tide teammates, Hudson and Castille are on campus this summer, pacing through seven-on-seven drills in anxious anticipation to redeem the season gone wrong. For Hudson, that also means making fans and teammates forget about his arrest for misdemeanor marijuana possession and subsequent suspension during a 27-3 loss to LSU in November. Ask him and he'll tell you: this season is an opportunity he has been waiting years to seize. He finally has the chance to be the marquee tailback in Alabama's offense, a key ingredient in a team hoping to get off the mat and back into a bowl game. That makes it tough during all these summer workouts. I'm just ready to put on pads, and I get kind of crazy sometimes. I think I have on pads or something, he said, chuckling. I got the itch. If you've ever played, you would know the feeling. When the season is over with, you're ready for the season to be over with. But when the season is about to start, you just get that itch, that killer mentality. You're just ready to hit somebody. Hudson enters this season as the No. 1 tailback in an offense short on receivers, meaning the running game should be the featured aspect. As a junior, Hudson showed flashes of brilliance, recklessly throwing his 5-foot-10, 202-pound frame into defenders for extra yards. Seeing third downs as Shaud Williams' primary backup, Hudson rushed for 490 yards on 100 carries. The 4.9-yards-per-carry average was the lowest he's compiled in his Alabama tenure. Through three seasons, Hudson is averaging 5.4. Ready to step up He brings expectations into this season. Those he puts on himself, as well as the ones Alabama's fans and coaches have on him to carry a program stepped in success from the running game. I'm a little nervous, because I don't want to let anyone down, Hudson said. But I know in my heart what I can do, so I can't wait. It's been a long time waiting. I'm just ready to go out there and prove what I can do. At first, Hudson figures to get the majority of carries in a crowded backfield that boasts sophomores Kenneth Darby and Castille, a potential star in the making who, in addition to being the son of a former Crimson Tide All-American, will line up at fullback and tailback in an effort to get him on the field. Last season, Castille became only the eighth true freshman in school history to start his first game. He, too, will get his carries in this setup. I'm sure if I meet my own expectations, it will please everyone else, Castille said. If I don't meet mine, then I'm a failure. That's kind of the way I look at it. Hard work pays off, even if it's not immediate. I'm just prepared. That's all you can do prepare. ROLL TIDE ROLL!! [RollTideFan] Good Things Coming?
Roll Tide Roll!! Rick CECIL HURT: 'Outsiders see good things coming to Tide There is something that takes root every year about this time around the University of Alabama football program, no matter what is done to eradicate it. Obviously, were not talking about grass. Were talking about optimism. Its only natural, with football season less than eight weeks away, that Crimson Tide fans would be encouraged about the upcoming season. Whats different about this year, though, is that some of the brightest sunshine seems to be coming from outside Tuscaloosa. For instance, take Phil Steeles 2004 Football Preview, a magazine that won high marks for prescience a year ago when it predicted not only a fifth-place SEC West finish for Alabama, but also correctly tabbed LSU instead of 2003s trendy pick, Auburn, to win the division. This year, Steele has a seat near the front of the Alabama bandwagon, predicting that the Tide will be second most improved team in the country. (To the chagrin of some Tide fans, he thinks the most improved will be Texas AM, and, in keeping with the ex-Alabama coaches theme, he tabs UTEP as the third most improved.) Steele picks Alabama second in the division and boldly states that Alabama could swagger into Knoxville with a 7-0 record in October. On top of that, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported earlier this week that one of the most popular propositions this summer in Nevada, where one can legally wager, is Alabama over-7. That means that people are risking green, folding money on a proposition that pays off only if the Crimson Tide wins more than seven games this season, and the assumption is that not all those people are Alabama fans. So why is America, or at least some of America, bullish on Crimson Tide football for 2004? Is it simply a case where they look at the crimson jerseys and the history books, and dont realize the modern-day reality that NCAA sanctions have created? Or are some people in Tuscaloosa, hardened by a four-year stretch in which misery has been relieved only by occasional treachery, simply refuse to expect anything good to happen, even if they should? Thats the mystery of the upcoming season, and part of its intrigue. For my part, its too early to start throwing around predictions. There are still recruits in limbo, and academic issues to be resolved for some current players. There are players like A.C. Carter, who might be major contributors or might still have health issues to overcome. Injury may be the No. 2 variable (behind coaching) in determining this teams destiny. It will be easier to weigh those variables in late August, not mid-July Every one of those issues is magnified because Alabama is not as deep as many of the teams it plays. The schedule, in which the most difficult games seems to be loaded onto the back end, could be a blessing, or a curse, depending on how things go in September. When there are that many variables, Alabama-watchers can be excused if they expect at least a few to go sour. The last four years would do that, even to the most stout-hearted loyalist. Its a direct reversal of the Alabama attitude in the 1960s and 1970s, when Crimson Tide fans assumed that even if things did go wrong at some point, Coach Bryant will fix it. It probably wont take a lot of success to start Alabama fans thinking that way again, though. And it has to be encouraging that at least a few people who arent anywhere close to Alabama think that good things just might happen. [RollTideFan] Basketball Article
http://www.al.com/sports/mobileregister/rkennedy.ssf?/base/sports/1089537395113510.xml Difference is in Tide's expectations Sunday, July 11, 2004 Mark Gottfried was a good enough basketball prospect to earn a scholarship to Alabama and help the Tide to the NCAA Sweet 16 in each of his three seasons. He was effective enough as a long-range shooter that his name is still prominently displayed in the Tide record book. But would the Gottfried of 20 years ago be good enough to earn a scholarship with the current Alabama program that Gottfried the coach has built? Probably not. For evidence, look at the newest player set to join the Tide program as a walk-on. Like Gottfried, Jeremy Monceaux is a guard who stands just over 6 feet tall and has a reputation for being a prolific scorer. Monceaux, like Gottfried, is the son of a coach who moved to Alabama and immediately began making an impact as a high school player. Both starred at a private school -- Monceaux at Birmingham's Parkway Christian Academy, Gottfried at UMS-Wright. Both signed scholarships with Christian-based universities -- Monceaux at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University and Gottfried at Oral Roberts University. During his one season in Tulsa, Gottfried averaged 8.1 points per game. Monceaux averaged 8.8 points per game as a freshman in being named to the Big South Conference All-Rookie team. After playing one season, each player decided he was ready to return to Alabama to compete at the highest level of college basketball. But that's where the difference between Bama basketball of 1984 and Bama basketball of 2004 becomes apparent. When Gottfried decided to transfer, Wimp Sanderson considered it a victory to sign Gottfried to a scholarship. Monceaux, on the other hand, is in Tuscaloosa these days awaiting his release from Liberty. But even when he's eligible to join the Tide program for the 2005-2006 season, he will almost certainly do so as a non-scholarship player. The difference between how the two players have been received has little to do with how college basketball has changed in the last two decades. It has everything to do with how Alabama's level of expectation has changed. Sanderson was one of the most underrated coaches in the history of the Southeastern Conference. He developed good players like Gottfried and Jim Farmer into outstanding contributors, and he took outstanding talents like Buck Johnson and Derrick McKey and made them dominant. But for all his accomplishments, Sanderson did not take a team to the NCAA Elite 8 and thus did not reap the benefits of being recognized as one of the country's elite programs. That's where the Tide finds itself today. It's hard to find a scholarship for a player like Monceaux when Alabama is the leading candidate to sign the country's top player -- assuming Athens High School forward Richard Hendrix doesn't go straight to the NBA -- and is still in the running for five of the country's top 50 prospects, according to Rivals.com. Monceaux may or may not turn out to be as good a player at Alabama as Gottfried. But thanks to what is being built by Gottfried the coach, he will certainly be a part of a better Alabama program. [RollTideFan] Brodie Croyle Article
It's a week old, it's very long, but it's an excellent read. http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/sports/108893257567090.xml He's Red, White and True His bloodlines and upbringing prepared Brodie Croyle to handle fame and adversity; along the way he became the tough, persevering face of Alabama Crimson Tide football Sunday, July 04, 2004 By THOMAS MURPHY Sports Reporter RAINBOW CITY, Ala. -- The Croyle family of Rainbow City all tell a poignant vignette they believe captures the essence of Brodie Croyle. When Brodie was 5 years old, a boy his own age was dropped off at the Croyles' Big Oak Ranch, their safe harbor for abused and neglected children in northeast Alabama. The boy's name was Joey Snider and he came to the Croyles with nothing but the clothes on his back. When Joey was introduced at the Croyle house, Brodie immediately responded. Snider remembers the moment from 16 years ago as if it happened yesterday. His momma had bought him some new clothes and he brought them in and laid them at my feet and said, 'These are yours,' Snider said. For devout Christians like John and Teresa Tee Croyle, who have embraced hundreds of abused children in three decades of work at Big Oak, their boy's unselfishness strummed a harmonious chord. He continually saw us ministering to other people around us, Tee Croyle said. He just grew up seeing that you take care of other people, that their needs are important. A dozen years later, in December 2000, Brodie Croyle was the same Southern-drawling, shirt-off-his-back-giving, hard-competing, fun-loving kid who grew up on the ranch with dozens of brothers and sisters. Only by then he was a premier football prospect, the top-rated quarterback in the country by some analysts. And he was caught in a dilemma. Croyle had been a die-hard University of Alabama fan all his life, and now, on the eve of the announcement of his college commitment, he had reached a crossroads. He was going to play football for Florida State University, he thought. The steady recruitment and the trust earned by then-FSU offensive coordinator Mark Richt, and the promise of playing in a passing offense, had swayed Croyle toward Tallahassee as his decision loomed. Alabama remained a runner-up. The reasons for that could be ticked off in short order. For starters, new Alabama coach Dennis Franchione was known more for his running tendencies. Also, the Croyles, a tight-knit family of four who hold personal ethics dearly, were already wary of Franchione. Finally, the possibility of NCAA sanctions were looming at Alabama. Though his heart remained tethered to Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide was not the ideal destination for the kid who had smashed six major state records, including passing for 528 yards in one game at Westbrook Christian School. Croyle was out with friends on the eve of announcing FSU as his choice when John Croyle got wind that Richt, who had been at the Croyles' house that very evening, was on the verge of landing the vacant head coaching post at the University of Georgia. (Florida State) really was going to be my choice until I heard through the grapevine (Richt) was going to take that job at Georgia, Brodie Croyle said. I still had my doubts about going to Florida State up until that point. That pretty much solidified it, that Alabama was it. As much as I wanted to go to Florida State, (Alabama) is where I always dreamed of playing. But there was still some recruiting to do. John and Tee said they had gotten some strange vibes from Franchione during the recruiting process; they said Franchione had played dodgeball with a series of questions from Tee. John, a second-team All-America defensive end at Alabama in 1973, said he believed Tee had sniffed out what they perceived as the phony in Franchione. John and Tee, an Auburn graduate and math teacher at Westbrook Christian, tried to limit their influence on Brodie's decision. His only blood sister, Reagan, who was finishing a college career at Alabama that included a stint on the basketball team and her election as homecoming queen, dropped a few obvious hints about why Brodie should go to Bama. My dad never said one word about it, Brodie Croyle said. If anything, when they hired Coach Fran, he was like, 'As much as you want to go to Alabama, I don't think you should.' I kind of had to sell him on it. And so, on Dec. 7, 2000, 17-year-old Brodie Croyle became the first commitment to the Dennis Franchione regime at Alabama. For better or for worse. When will it end?: On a sultry spring morning three months before Alabama's 2004 season opener, the 21-year-old Croyle said he wouldn't reverse for anything his decision to play at Alabama. Yet he admits his career has taken a turbulent course through three new head coaches, NCAA pitfalls and a season-long shoulder injury during a dismal 4-9 season in 2003. It got to the point where I'd call home

http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040710/NEWS/407100346/1011 Crimson Tide linebacker is thinking about the bigger picture By Cecil Hurt Sports Editor July 10, 2004 TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans would be a natural for the Bronko Nagurski Award in a couple of respects. First, hes adept enough as a football player to merit consideration. He holds the Alabama single-game record for tackles (25 against Arkansas last year), and may be the headliner for the Crimson Tide defense as he enters his junior season in 2004. Thus, he deserves the watch-list mention he got last week from the Nagurski Award (given by the Football Writers of America to the nations best defender, regardless of position) and will probably be a viable candidate, regardless of position, on statistics alone. Its not just performance, though. Ryans also has an attitude that is something of a throwback to the Nagurski days, when players seemed less concerned with attracting individual attention. The way I look at individual awards is this, Ryans said. If I go out with a team attitude and give a team effort, then the awards will come. Awards are not something I strive for. I strive to make the team better. I have to think about the bigger picture. Ryans carries that attitude even when talking to Crimson Tide fans. People would come up to me last year and say 'I recognize you and they would want to talk about the tackle record, Ryans said. I didnt have much to say. Id just tell them that the defense shouldnt have been on the field that much. The low profile suits Ryans. He got some attention as a recruit out of Jess Lanier High School in Bessemer, but wasnt the Tides highest-profile signee. That made little difference to the academic All-SEC performer. Ive never been out for myself when playing sports, he said. I want to win. But you cant win playing by yourself. Its not a one-man sport like tennis or golf. Youve got to have 10 other men on defense and 11 on offense who all have a team attitude. Ryans stopped short of saying that the Crimson Tide lacked that unity in last years 4-9 season, but did admit that the long year took a toll. It was very tough, Ryans said. I had been through something similar in high school and that helped me deal with it, but it was still rough. You keep going out and playing to the best of your ability, and you keep coming up short every time, and naturally it hurts. Im just taking it all as motivation. When I think about the Arkansas game, I dont think about making a lot of tackles. I think that we were one play short. So I do all the extra things like working out, so I will be able to make the play that takes us over the edge. If Alabama is going to reverse things this season, the linebacking corps will play a strong part. With Ryans, Freddie Roach, Cornelius Wortham, Juwan Garth and Terrence Jones, among others, the group appears both talented and deep. Ryans will be switching roles again this season, moving back to the strong side after spending a year as a weak-side linebacker. When I came in, I was actually a middle linebacker, Ryans said. Then, when the season came, I was playing strong side. Then when Brooks left, they moved me to weak-side to replace him. Now, Im back at strong. It really doesnt matter to me. I dont prefer a position as long as Im out there. The quiet Ryans may be shy when it comes to personal achievements, but hes not bashful about the team goals for the coming season. My goals are, first, for this team to come together as a team and as a family, Ryans said. Then, I want to go out and win all the games. I dont want us to come up short again. If we do that, then hopefully that will put us in the spot to play for the national championship. The words national championship havent been connected with the 2004 Alabama team often, but Ryans said he wouldnt back down from that goal. Im not just going out and trying to win six games so we can go to some bowl, Ryans said. I want to go to the biggest bowl of all. ROLL TIDE!
