Gotta disagree with you here, Devonna. Leaving your
starters in when you are getting your ass kicked is
the GOOD coaching decision. At least you are giving
the team their best chance to come back and try to
win. This is not to say that I disagree with Coach G.
or that I think he was intentionally running up the
score. From everything I have read this morning, a
kindergarten team could have won last night. I just

[RollTideFan] Two offenses?

2005-01-03 Thread Bryan Benefield
Did anyone else notice this?

When the offense was bogging down and looking like
your local high school Guillon (sp?) wasn't next to
Shula, and Shula seemed to either be glaring or
yelling off to his side? When there was a little spark
or a few positive plays, Shula had a clipboard, and
there was Guillon, signaling to Spencer. Makes me
wonder if MS has realized that Radar O'Reilly doesn't
know how to call plays, but unfortunately too late to
save the game or season. Also makes me wonder if this
game was Rader's chance to show why he should stay on
the staff, but he blew it?

And WTF was up with the D? Any theories?

Guillon pulled that disappearing act against South
Carolina, as well. He went from holding the clipboard,
to arguing with Shula, to sitting on the bench.
Something's not right with that marriage, and I'll be
surprised if Guillon doesn't leave.

2005-01-03 Thread Bryan Benefield
My perception was that Rader was calling plays when
Guillon wasn't in the picture; he was standing by
Rader. His reponsibility is to signal plays in to the
offense, so he would be next to whoever is calling
said plays.

I wish that Shula would have kept the clipboard after
the first 3 and out.

Oh well

Re: [RollTideFan] Two offenses?

2005-01-03 Thread Jeff Todd
Under normal circumstances, Guillon would have graduated
from clipboard boy / play signaling before he ever
arrived at Bama. A.J. Milwee and/or Adam Thrash are
supposed to shoulder those duties. Again, that's under
NORMAL circumstances, and there's definitely something
abnormal about the Shula / Guillon relationship.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Shula needs
to fire Rader, hire a top-notch OC / QB Coach, and get
completely out of the play calling business himslef. As
it stands, that's the most dysfunctional cluster-fsck I
have ever witnessed.

Under normal circumstances, Guillon would have graduated from clipboard
boy / play signaling before he ever arrived at Bama. A.J. Milwee and/or
Adam Thrash are supposed to shoulder those duties. Again, that's under
NORMAL circumstances, and there's definitely something abnormal about the
Shula / Guillon relationship.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Shula needs to fire Rader,
hire a top-notch OC / QB Coach, and get completely out of the play calling
business himslef. As it stands, that's the most dysfunctional cluster-fsck
I have ever witnessed.

I think most Alabama fans have no problem with UAB. They've always had a good
basketball team, now they're have an up and coming football team as well. Remember
the tooth and nail game against Georgia last year?

Besides, they have one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country.

Mr. Finebaum, no one in Tuscaloosa is drinking the hater-ade. We love our brothers

Alabama. If the opelika cow college could understand that as well, we'd live in

Two Alabama rivals fighting for first Final Four slot

Congratulations to the basketball teams from Alabama and Alabama-Birmingham.

Oh, sorry. It's seldom a good idea to put them in the same paragraph.
And certainly not the same arena.

The authors of the two biggest upsets so far in the NCAA Tournament
coexist 60 miles apart, close enough to annoy each other but not to play.

Alabama beats No. 1-ranked Stanford. Then UAB dumps No. 1 seed Kentucky.
Suddenly the Heart of Dixie is also capital of college basketball, even
if everyone knows the big story in the state last weekend was how good
the defense looked at the Crimson Tide spring football game.

Which, by the way, was attended by 35,000, or about what Alabama drew to
its first five home basketball games.

That part, said former UAB coach Gene Bartow over the phone, has
never changed.

Now basketball gets to be king for the week in Alabama, and we could
throw a party for both teams. But then, who'd bring the brass knuckles?

Close chums, they're not. They have met once. And that's when the NIT
dragged them into the same second round game in 1993. UAB won 58-56.

There's genuine hate on both sides, said Paul Finebaum, a syndicated
talk show host and sportswriter in Birmingham.

Part of it is natural. The establishment at Tuscaloosa sneering at the
interlopers in Birmingham, who did not even have an athletic program
until the 1970s.

That's when Gene Bartow having healed from the wounds of trying to
replace John Wooden at UCLA kick-started a UAB basketball program.
Four years later, the Blazers were in the Mideast Regional championship,
a place Alabama has never been, before or since.

I think people realized that UAB was an unusual story, Bartow said.

The Tide faithful in Tuscaloosa didn't like him for that. Didn't like
him for crowding them out of the spotlight. And they despised UAB when a
Bartow letter to the NCAA leaked, suggesting Alabama had a history of
cutting the corners on recruiting.

So a line was drawn in the cotton. You had to choose, Finebaum said.
You couldn't be a fan of both.

They have stayed apart in basketball, loathing from a distance. Such as
the UAB fans who took to calling their Tuscaloosa cousins UAT.

So Alabama might have gone to Las Vegas to take on Oregon this season,
and to Rhode Island to meet Providence, but it sure as blazes wasn't
going to go down Interstate 20 to play UAB.

But now they turn up as co-Cinderellas, when everyone knows there isn't
a storybook big enough for the both of them.

The Tide was once 12-10 but regrouped in time to make the field. Then it
beat Stanford.

Who could cook up a better tale?

Well, UAB could the next day, shocking Kentucky at the wire.

In some ways, what UAB did was steal a lot of thunder from what Alabama
did, Finebaum said. We may be a football state, and Stanford might be
a school you have to read a book about to get familiar with, but nobody
has to explain to anybody in Alabama the importance of beating Kentucky.

And now UAB hunts more big game Kansas on Friday.

If you can beat Kentucky, said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said, you
can beat anybody.

Meanwhile, Alabama plays Syracuse with its own grand plan.

I know in our state one thing we haven't done is put a team into the
Final Four, said Alabama coach Mark Gottfried. To elevate our sport
here, that's the step hopefully we make.

Gottfried once was a Crimson Tide guard. UAB coach Mike Anderson is a
Birmingham native son. They both know their state, and how two more
victories would bring a day never seen before in Alabama.

I think Alabama fans understand what a great job Mike Anderson is doing
at UAB, Bartow said. And I think UAB fans can appreciate what is
happening at Alabama.

But try getting either side to admit it.

Two LSU players ineligible for Sugar Bowl
http://www.al.com/sportsflash/topstories/index.ssf?/base/sports-2/1072196342312410.xml

The Associated Press
12/23/2003, 10:14 a.m. CT

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LSU running back Shyrone Carey and long snapper Steve Damen
were declared ineligible for the Sugar Bowl because of unspecified rules violations.

No. 2 LSU (12-1) will play No. 3 Oklahoma (12-1) for the Bowl Championship Series
title on Jan. 4.

Carey began the season as one of the team's two main running backs, but his role
diminished after he missed four games with a knee injury.

Center Ben Wilkerson has been long-snapping in practice and others, including backup
Gant Petty, can handle the assignment, coach Nick Saban said.

Saban would not disclose what Carey and Damen did, but he said they must understand
the consequences of their actions.

They've been warned about these types of things in the past. I'm sure they feel worse
about it than anybody, Saban said.

Everyone else is doing what these kids did. These kids are human beings. They are
held to a higher standard and have a lot of rules, relative to what they can and can't
do relative to a bowl game.
