SunOS 4 has a C compiler included, but it only supports KR. You can

Solaris 2 (and higher) has no C compiler, but again you can buy one.

GCC rulez!
At school we have Digital Unix with built-in (Digital) cc (C compiler), but
we have installed gcc too.

The main reason I like gcc is that sources for gcc are fully portable to any
operating system.
If you aren't able to compile your gcc sources in your compiler, you can
always install gcc.
Also gcc is always in (i.e. follows latest standards - at least as far as
possible).

But your KR syntax isn't problem for C compilers either.
I only wonder what is in unistd.h, that you had to include it.

Re: SAM on eBay - Messenger

2000-12-05 Thread Aley Keprt

It seems that Messenger saves 64k
files.
So you have a copy of ZX-ROM in each
file.
In our country we call this: "walking around a hot
pap"

In other words they (MGT) have no rights to include
ZX ROM in Sam's ZX emulator, so they made
a greatnothing: Messenger, which copies ROM
to Sam.

If you simply loads the rom:
load "zxrom"code 65536
before starting that old very simple emulator
provided with Sam, you can then run it and load and run almost any
software.
The only problem is tape.
But most of the "protected" tapes work well, as I
tried. (If they are in a good condition.)

KR must went out, since there are several holes in its architecture.
Have you ever though on all aspects of C syntax, its recognition by
compilers and humans?
You better start reading ANSI documents before you say things like this.

For me there are two main disadvantages:
1. prototypes not needed -- this forced millions bugs in past 30 years
2. variable names are defined twice -- this is nonsense in general, without
need of further discussion

Also to clean the yellow off, don't use 'Aceton' (Not sure if that's
the English name as well. It's some solvent I've used on one of my Sams)
Not only does the yellow disappear but so does the SAM-logo plus the plastic
casing itself, if rubbed long enough !

You've got to admit that it looks like an impressive

good condition (assuming the photos are genuine), and is that a Messenger

Does anyone know if there's a method of removing the yellowing of ages
from
a once shiny white Sam?
Cheers,

Apparently it downloads snapshots from your speccy and makes them
work on Sam. I only know about this 'cos someone asked me to support
Messenger files in my little proggy that converts SNA to and from Sam
48K snapshots.

Acetone is certainly not a substance I would consider using to clean
anything that's made of plastic! :o)

Apparently sodium bicarbonate works - never tried it myself though.

Yes.. I remember a science experiment where we pour a little Acetone on an
OHP slide to which we imprinted a 3D form of a leaf.

Great!

That's what I want! Now!!!

I need to convert all that old games in Sam snap shots to a regular file
format, usable in emulators on PC.
Where should I go for it?

(imho. Messenger is a stupid piece of hardware which does only what could be
done by a very simple software.)

Can be found at ftp://ftp.nvg.ntnu.no/pub/sam-coupe/misc/sun/ but
(a) it compiles on SunOS 4, possibly on Linux (I do have it compiled
but forget whether I had to do anything), and almost certainly
not on Windows although you *might* manage it with cygwin; and
(b) it's nasty hacky code.

You will need to get the snapshots off the Sam disk with samread
and then convert them with samsnap. The samread program accepts
DSK files or (on Linux) real disks.

I think the idea was that the problem most people had with the sam was
actually getting the games to load in the first place, running them after
that point was fine. Therefore you loaded it on a spectrum, which was
more tolerant to old tapes, and then whizzed it down the wire to your Sam,
where it worked happily ever after.

I can't believe it's gone for 407quid. Perhaps I should be making mine a
named item when I renew my insurance!
