[Samba] My Samba 3.0beta1 stopped working as ADS member

2003-06-17 Thread Patrik Gustavsson PS Sweden Senior Technical Consultant
I had a working Samba 3.0beta1 as ADS member of a W2003 server.
My w2000 client could log in to the W2003 server and use services on
Samba (home directory).
Winbind is working.

So I tried to re-do all my work again.

And suddenly the w2k can use any services on Samba anymore.

The output from the logfile tells me it's kerberos problem:
[2003/06/18 08:35:03, 3] libads/kerberos_verify.c:(126)
krb5_rd_req with auth failed (Bad encryption type)
[2003/06/18 08:35:03, 1] smbd/sesssetup.c:(175)
 Failed to verify incoming ticket!
[2003/06/18 08:35:03, 3] smbd/error.c:(94)
error string = No such file or directory
Winbind/wbinfo works as it should.

I know what problem it is, but not WHY and not HOW to fix it ?

/Patrik

[Samba] New Samba Server

2003-06-17 Thread Tim Rowe
I'm currently looking at hardware specs for a samba server, its' job
will be to hold general office files, cad / solidworks files along with
approximately 40 outlook PST files that will be opened off the server.

Here are the current specs I'm looking at..

AMD 2600XP
Asus A7N8X Deluxe nVidia Serial ATA
2 x 512 MB PC2700 DDR 333 = 1024MB
ASUS S520/Generic 52X CD-ROM (OEM)
ASUS GrForce4 MX440-8X 64MB DDR
D-Link DGE-550T 32/64-Bit PCI-Bus Copper (RJ45)

3Ware Escalade 7500-8
8 x 40gb ata-100 7200.7 drives

3Ware Escalade 7500-4
4 x 40gb ata-100 7200.7 drives

The 7500-8 will be holding the office and cad / solid works files and
the 7500-4 will be holding the PST files (I thought it was best to keep
them on a separate controller cards.)

Will this do a reasonable job in keeping up with a gigabit network? And
is running PST files off the server like this a feasible option??

Any suggestions on hardware improvements would be appreciated as without
the hardware to test with I'm purchasing quite blindly here :|

Thanks
Tim

[Samba] WinBind and gdm/login

2003-06-17 Thread Brett Hales
Hi,

I am currently trying to set up a RedHat 9 Linux client to authenticate
against a Windows 2000 Active Directory server.

Using the Winbind documentation I have successfully authenticated
however I now have a problem with gdm.

Jun 18 12:18:48 jerry pam_winbind[1192]: user 'AU+Bhales' granted acces
Jun 18 12:18:48 jerry pam_winbind[1192]: user 'AU+Bhales' granted acces
Jun 18 12:18:49 jerry gdm(pam_unix)[1192]: session opened for user
AU+Bhales by (uid=0)
Jun 18 12:18:49 jerry gdm[1202]: gdm_slave_session_start: User not
allowed to log in

Does anybody know why gdm_slave_session_start is not allowing me to
login when pam_winbind has already authenticated me?

Thanks,

What about file locking?

I've run into lots of file locking problems, leading me to slowly just

I have the same problem, but ping works fine.

Browsing Network Neighborhood also displays Samba server & server string

from smb.conf, but same WinDoze error as below is experienced.

I can logon to Samba on server using smbclient locally however.

I am also have an old NT 4 SP6 server running on the same network. I
have experienced the problems described below with both the server
connected and with it completely shut down.

SYMPTOMS: The clients roaming profiles are not updated correctly during
the logon/logoff process. For instance, after logging onto the domain
through a client machine the following behavior appears:

1) Place a folder on the Desktop.
2) Drag documents/pictures etc. into new folder
3) Log off
4) Log in again
5) Delete the new folder along with its content(put in trash AND empty
trash)
6) Log off
7) Log in again
8) The folder which was just deleted is still on the Desktop. (Usually
the folder has been completely emptied of all files ... BUT NOT
Subfolders [if there were any]).

When I look at the profiles folder on the SAMBA PDC
[/home/samba/profiles//Desktop] I notice that the folder which
should have been deleted is still there

This PDC has been running since 10/02 and this problem has only surfaced
within the last 2 months.

The following is an excerpt from one of the samba logs for a machine
account.

[Samba] Problems with timeouting connections

2003-06-17 Thread Peter Rabbitson
Hello all,
I have the following problem both at my home network and at work. Once many cleints
access a share, and traffic grows up
extensively connections start to terminate themselves unexpectedly. It may be an open
file or a locked share - either way it
reflects a mesaage similar to
  oplock_break: receive_smb error (Success)
  oplock_break failed for file John's Publications/Show Price List 05-16-03.xls (dev =
900, inode = 8077379, file_id = 940).
[2003/06/16 15:05:07, 0] smbd/oplock.c:oplock_break(843)
oplock_break: client failure in break - shutting down this smbd.
and then simply terminates the connection.
This wouldn't be such a pain if it wasn't for the accounting software Peachtree
Accounting. While it's running it needs to
maintain a constant open connection to the data files. Once it senses something went
wrong (a killed smbd) it crashes as
well and you are forced to reboot the workstation with following data loss. I tried to
play with the socket_options with no
luck. Also this behaviour is extremely rare with 9x clients but happens almost once a
week with nt/2k/xp clients. Included
are parts of my smb.confs as well as verinfo. Thank you in advance for your help.

You are going to have to use samba 3 for this... 2.2 doesn't support any

[Samba] Quickbooks revisited

2003-06-17 Thread drgn65
I have QucikBooks on our network too. I have had a number of problems with
this crappy software. If my client actually wanted me too I'd rather create
my own accounting software with a better interface and a mysql backend but
that isn't going to happen. A few things with QuickBooks that I have
noticed that maybe will help.

#1. QuickBooks in multi-user mode is much slower than in single user mode.
This is the (crappy) design of QuickBooks. It has to do with the fact that
QuickBooks checks everything everywhere when in multiuser mode to make sure
that no data gets corrupted (even though it has corrupted before). Our
company datafile is around ~180mb.

#2. This problem will not be solved easily at all. Quickbooks appears to be
as slow as the weakest client link. In our case a P2 300 w/ 64 megs of ram.
Again, this has to do with #1.

#3. Upgrading Quickbooks won't help. We've had many versions in the past
and currently run the "Enterprise Edition." It still can be as slow as a
turtle under certain operations.

#4. My biggest complain with this software is that it requires it's users to
be "Power Users." Boy do I hate that With samba it's very difficult for
me to limit a Power user's ability and I have had people take advantge of it
repeatedly. Damn QuickBooks

[Samba] Odd Folder issue.

2003-06-17 Thread Robert Adkins
Hello All,

I have a reoccurring issue that has only started to appear
recently with Samba. What we are seeing is the mass duplication of a
folder within itself for something close to 30 iterations deep.

Sometimes this will also move the data held within the folder
one or two deep into the path.

For Example...

Let's call a share Data

Data is mounted as the N: drive on all Windows worksations.

Inside the N: Drive is a series of folders...

N:\Incoming_Data

N:\Jobs

N:\Hold

Inisde the "Jobs" directory there is a series of folders named
after each job number series. Examples : 1100 1200 1300 1400, with
subfolders within each of those listing the individual jobs themselves.

Now, for some strange reason, sometimes the Jobs directory (it
has happened to other directories as well) will replicate within itself
normally moving all data directly held within it down two or three
directories, yet it will continue to replicate the "Jobs" folder within
itself for something like 20 to 30 iterations.

Example (ASCI Approximation of the tree)

- Data on 'Server'(N:)
+[] Hold
+[] Incoming_Data
-[-]Jobs
  -[-]Jobs
+[]1100
+[]1200
+[]1300
-[-]Jobs
-[-]Jobs
  -[-]Jobs
-[-]Jobs
-[-]Jobs
  -[-]Jobs
-[-]Jobs
-[-]Jobs
  -[-]Jobs
-[-]Jobs
-[-]Jobs
  -[-]Jobs
-[-]Jobs
.and so on

The system is running Red Hat 7.3 and Samba version
2.2.27-3.7.3, with Samba configured as a Primary Domain Controller.

This could also be an ext3fs related issue and thus I will be
posting this to the ext3fs mailing list as well. Although, this issue
has ONLY appeared on Samba shared directory structures.

Once "fixed" this issue will not show up for a few weeks or
more.

Thanks for any assistance offered.

Regards,
Robert Adkins

[Samba] samba auth problems in RH9 w/ log

I have samba version 2.2.7a security-rollup fix from redhat running as a

this person often is the only one that can't get into files on the computer
(through mapped network drives)

I am also have an old NT 4 SP6 server running on the same network. I have experienced
the problems described below with both the server connected and with it completely
shut down.

SYMPTOMS: The clients roaming profiles are not updated correctly during the
logon/logoff process. For instance, after logging onto the domain through a client
machine the following behavior appears:

1) Place a folder on the Desktop.
2) Drag documents/pictures etc. into new folder
3) Log off
4) Log in again
5) Delete the new folder along with its content(put in trash AND empty trash)
6) Log off
7) Log in again
8) The folder which was just deleted is still on the Desktop. (Usually the folder has
been completely emptied of all files ... BUT NOT Subfolders [if there were any]).

When I look at the profiles folder on the SAMBA PDC
[/home/samba/profiles//Desktop] I notice that the folder which should have
been deleted is still there

This PDC has been running since 10/02 and this problem has only surfaced within the
last 2 months.

The following is an excerpt from one of the samba logs for a machine account.

[Samba] problem clearing the "Read Only" attribute from Windows XP

2003-06-17 Thread Mat Brletic
I am trying to configure a share using Samba version 2.2.7a, and have
not been able to clear the "Read Only" attribute of created folders from
within XP.

In smb.conf, I have: read only = no, and am mapping the archive, system
and hidden attributes to the Linux x bits.

I have set the permissions for all users to allow changing attributes
and permissions, yet the bit always returns set.

I would appreciate any help.

I had the same problem. In my case it was a program (tightVNC 1.2.8,
known bug) that kept Windows from closing the registry during logout.
Have a look at the Windwos Event Logs, there should be an error message
you can feed to google.

[Samba] More Domain Groups

2003-06-17 Thread Collins, Kevin
Hi All:

Stuff I'm using:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 2.1
Samba 2.2.7
OpenLDAP 2.0.25

I followed the Idealx.org howto to build Samba+LDAP. I have a functioning,
replicating domain on my lab workbench right now. Then I began to explore
permissions on local shares, etc. when I discovered that to a Windows
client, the only domain groups that are available from a Samba PDC are
"Domain Users" and "Domain Admins".

Upon further reading in the Idealx Howto, I see this comment:

"In Samba 2.2, only 2 groups are dealed for Microsoft Windows workstations:
Domain Admins and Domain Users. All other groups are considered Local Unix
Groups. That means that a Samba user will only be a Domain User or Domain
Admin. If you only use Samba servers, there is no problem, but if you plan
to use Microsoft Windows NT member servers using groups, just forget about
it..."

What this doesn't say is that the local Windows workstations will not be
able to see anything but users those two groups. I have several machines
sharing data and printers from the local machine. This simply isn't enough
groups for me to apply my scheme of local rights.

Well, more correctly, this causes me a great deal of administrative overhead
maintaining local group definitions as things change. I've googled, read
more howtos than I care to mention and have basically fried my brain
looking for viable options to solve this problem. So I'm posing the
question to the group:

Is there anyway I can get additional groups (which are available to Samba)
through to the local Windows workstations?

[Samba] Problems Accessing Printer

2003-06-17 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
I am running Samba 2.2.7a on a Mandrake 9.1 system. I am trying to make a
locally attached printer, LaserJet 6mp, available to the network.
The SWAT program is being used to do the configuration. I have configured the
printer to be browseable and have made the nobody account
the one that is used to access the printer. The /tmp directory is where the data
will spool. The printing daemon that I am using is CUPS. After
the configurations were complete, Samba was restarted. I tried to connect to the
printer from a Windows 2000 workstation. I used the
My Network Places icon to locate the system the printed was attached to, and
selected the printer. I encountered an error message saying
the wrong printer driver was loaded on the Samba server. I selected the
"correct" driver from the Windows list. After that, the printer loaded, but
had the following error message:

Access denied, unable to connect.

Any ideas? Thanks.

A share is alway in a partition! But if you set up
multiple shares in the same partition/logical volume,
one set of quota rules will be binding for all of
them. Quotas are not from samba. They are further
below that level. They are provided by the fs.

>quota's are only available for partitions correct ?

Once again, quotas do not come from samba.

You need to join by name, not by IP - because other parts of the
protocol demand to be called the 'right thing'

[Samba] problems compiling 3.0beta

2003-06-17 Thread Ron Bombard
Greetings!

I'm trying to build Samba3.0beta.
I'm running HP-UX 11.11
I'm using GCC 3.2.3

I ran the configure script. Then I ran Make. It crap's out pretty much
immediately. If anyone could look at the output below, and offer a
suggestion, it would be greatly appreciated.I'm sure its something
bone-headed that I'm doing wrong.

Thanks!
Ron

uh
i think not...

the long delay he's referring to is the delay that is required to save
the roaming profile.

there are only two options
1) reduce the size of the roaming profile
2) increase the speed of the network/server

to reduce the size of the profile you could try a few tricks
1) move the netscape cache into the local settings folder (which is not
replicated to the server)
2) store all documents permanently on the server instead of my documents
3) clean off the desktop

best wishes

[Samba] Winbind+Pam

2003-06-17 Thread Chip Bell
Almost there...

Have Samba3 beta, RH9. Win2k Native Mode network..

I've done all the winbind stuff and PAM. I can't login as a domain user
to my Linux box. I DO however have a linux account with the same
credentials as my domain account. When I double click on the server
from network neighborhood, it goes right in. It seems to me that the
linux box still isn't accepting domain accounts. All the "wbinfo" stuff
queries the domain controller fine, I get groups, users and everything.

Please help!

[Samba] Redhat 9.0 and samba-2.2.8a src rpm

2003-06-17 Thread Jason Doran
Hi,
I am currently using samba-2.2.8a on RedHat 7.3. This was installed
from a
.src.rpm with the following options added to the samba.spec file:

I am now trying to build samba-2.2.8a on RedHat 9.0. This goes ok from
a standard samba.spec
file but when I add the above options [specifically --with-ldapsam] I
get the error below.

[Samba] Problem

2003-06-17 Thread Simon Bergant
Dears,

I hope that this address is OK. I have one small problem. I'm using
Linux rh 8.0 and samba of course. File server works OK only problem is
Logon script on win 98. It takes only one minute to close it. The "dos
window" is closed immediately but then takes almost a minute (closing
Login script ..)

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks for your answer and best regards from Slovenia.

Re: [Samba] number of login sessions

2003-06-17 Thread Marian Mlcoch, Ing
Hi
exactly no but you can create script to this and use it on smb.conf as write
help:

preexec (S)
This option specifies a command to be run whenever the service is connected
to. It takes the usual substitutions.

An interesting example is to send the users a welcome message every time
they log in. Maybe a message of the day? Here is an example:

preexec = csh -c 'echo \"Welcome to %S!\" |
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbclient -M %m -I %I' &

Of course, this could get annoying after a while :-)

See also preexec close and postexec .

Default: none (no command executed)

Example: preexec = echo \"%u connected to %S from %m (%I)\" >> /tmp/log

preexec close (S)
This boolean option controls whether a non-zero return code from preexec
should close the service being connected to.

Default: preexec close = no

Try use grep %u smbstatus combination to do this.

Bye.

Yes. PAM and nsswitch are seperate, and it can be quite handy to
seperate them. Note that it doesn't work as well running winbind, not
having winbind in nsswtich, but running the Samba file-server.

If you have the winbind entry in the nsswtich.conf, and you have
'winbind use default domain = yes' and you have the same name on NT as
on unix, then sendmail won't know the difference. You will need to set
the idmap correctly if you don't want to chown the files.

[Samba] number of login sessions

2003-06-17 Thread José M. Fandiño
Hello,

I'd like to know if with the current version of samba it is
possible to limit the number of simultaneous login sessions?

I have a lot of users which share their passwords despite
being warned against it, so I was told to stop them.
Until now I haven't been able to find any form to do this,
Does anyone have any idea about how to do it?

regards.

Hi,

i've some problems with winbind in Samba 3.0 Beta1.

The configuration:

Samba 3.0 Beta1 installed under Sles8 on IBM z800 (s390)
compiled with gcc 3.2 and installed pam-devel-0.76-32
configure options: ./configure --with-pam --with-winbind
--with-acl-support --with-tdbsam --with-libsmbclient --with-smbwrapper
--with-utmp --with-quotas

NT PDC with SP6a

NT workstation with SP6a

i try some tests:

Test
Result
wbinfo -t
secret is ok
wbinfo -g
shows all unix and domain groups
wbinfo -u
shows all unix and domain users

getent group
shows only unix groups
getent passwd
shows only unix groups

net rpc user
ask for password and then fails (with password from normal domain user nad
domain admin)
net rpc group
ask for password and then fails
(with password from normal domain user nad domain admin)
net rpc testjoin
Join to "domain" is ok

[Samba] Samba Access Problem From Window NT/2000

2003-06-17 Thread Asad Hafeez
Hello,

I have configured the samba server on linux Redhat 6.2 as a file server. I shared two
folder on it with different username and password.

share name = General
path = /home/general
valid user = asad
public = no
writable =yes
printable =no
create mash =0755

share name = personal
path = /home/john
valid user = john
public = no
writable =yes
printable =no
create mash =0755

when i access "general" share with valid username/password from the windows-NT /2000 ,
i can able to open it, at the same time when i try to access the other share
"personal" with valid username/password it show me the error ,
error description:
"the credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials".

but on the same time if i try to access the same share with the same username/password
from different machine , i can able to open the share "persoanl".

it seems that windows cache the first username/password and retained it unless you
restart the machine or change the machine

can anybody tell me what is the actual problem and how can we resolved it.

waiting for reply,

From,
Asad Hafeez

That's your problem, reverse lookups need to work, either via DNS or
nss_wins (apparently it works without a WINS server, in which case it
used broadcasts).

I don't know is RH ships with a working nss_wins, if they do, it should
work by adding "wins" to the hosts line of your /etc/nsswitch.conf file.

BTW, setting up working reverse DNS would be a better solution, for
services that don't use get*ent, but direct DNS lookups.

[Samba] findsmb deprecated?

2003-06-17 Thread gregory mott
where did findsmb go? was it deprecated? is there something better
replacing it?

seems it was missing in rh7.2 (samba-2.2.7-3.7.2) and rh7.3
(samba-2.2.7-3.7.3) but the doc was still there, but entirely gone in
rh9 (samba-2.2.7a-8.9.0).

[Samba] Cannot add Domain Groups to Local Groups (D Users OK)

2003-06-17 Thread Steve Jr Ramage
I have searched the globe but alas I can't come up with a solution.
I am running Debian 3.0r0 with samba 2.2.3a12-3 (or something around
there)
and Kernel 2.4.18.

Basically I am trying to add a Domain Group to a Local Group, but when I
do I get an error (From Windows 2000):

"A member could not be added to or removed from the local group because
the member does not exist"

Can't figure out why I get this error, my friend running a similar set
up had the same issue. I tried the new version of samba, samba 2.2.8a
from www.samba.org (a binary tho), and it suffered the same flaw.

I guess the only other critical information is that when I switched from
2.2.8a (and then back) I noticed that 2.2.8a had Domain Users listed
when I viewed the domain groups available, but 2.2.3a (Debian build)
didn't, occasionally it had a second group full of garbage characters,
but that seemed to be intermitant on my 2000 machine (User Manager for
Domains however showed it all the time, but with the characters
changing).

Secondly, when I list the members of the local group on all my machines,
it lists some already predifined users,
\S-1-5-21-...-1000
\S-1-5-21-...-512

Now everything up to the -1000, or -512 is the PDC's SID, I have no idea
what they correspond to tho. I have a feeling that they happen to be my
groups, OTher things was that when I add a machine to the domain I
manually have to add the user to Local Administrators. These SID's are
probably the ones that are automatically added locally upon joining the
domain, and whatever resolves sids to name and backward is broken, or
something. I have no idea what to do tho. (I just broke something else
trying to fix this at the moment)

Any ideas would help alot, thank you...

[Samba] slow performance samba 2.2.7 with windows explorer on Win2000 or Win NT4

2003-06-17 Thread kurt . dekesel
Hello,

I notice that when I copy a small directory (150 kb) to a samba share
drive on Windows 2000, the performance is very slow. This is also the
case when using windows explorer on NT4. The samba share is made on a Sun
solaris 2.8 system and samba 2.2.7 is used. Copying the same directoy with
windows explorer (on the same pc !) to an samba share made on Sun Solaris
2.6 system, running samba 2.0.2 is much faster. There are no network
traffic problems. The same test I did on a DOS prompt. The result of this
test was the same for both Sun solaris systems. So I think there is a
problem with Win2000 explorer and Samba 2.2.7. Do you have any idea what
can be the reason?

Jeff,

Problem is definitely with cable company. Can't telnet to any of the netbios
ports, but on the server itself I can connect to port 139, the port that
smbd and nmbd are on.

Thanks for reminding me that telnet is a wonderful debugging tool also :^)

you can telnet to the remote box on port 137, 138, and 139 to just
recieve connect messages if you can then I hve no idea what is going on

[Samba] I am testing Samba 3beta1 as a PDC and have a Q about it'sbehaviure

2003-06-17 Thread Patrik Gustavsson PS Sweden Senior Technical Consultant
I am using tdbsam as passdb backand.

I have added root user with pdbedit.

I have added the machine trust account with pdbedit.

I have added the user with pdbedit.

I have created the user in /etc/passwd.

When the user logs in from a W2k and mounts the home-directory I noticed
that Samba didn't take the home-directory information from tdbsam, it
took it from /etc/passwd.

Is that correct ?

I assumed it would use the info in tdbsam.
