[Samba] SLES7, Clearcase and Samba
I am busy testing Clearcase on SLES7 on an IBM z900 mainframe. I have set up samba v2.2.0 to be part of the corporate domain and have done user mappings which works fine. Whenever I try to create a file in one of the shares with the correct permissions, the systems stops responding in every way, http, ssh everything. I can still ping the machine however. [Samba] Cannot see home folder on MAC OS X
Hi, I am running Samba 2.2.7a-58 on a SuSE 8.2 system. I have a few PC connecting to the server and a few MACs. I am having a problem with the MACs. Sometimes (most of the time) the MAC clients can access the shares on the server, but can't access their home folders. They can't even see the home folder. Going via netatalk it works fine. I have gone through some documentation and can not find anything pertaining to my problem. The PCs can acess their home folders just fine. Testparm runs with no errors. Just no home folders available for the mac os x users. When I look in my samba logfiles, I can see that the clients are connecting to samba using nobody as the username. Sure this is not right? Any help would be appreciated. I am just about running a default config of samba. Nothing fancy like PDC etc. No printers either. [Samba] Local usr groups + pswd exp.
Well hello ya all. first i would like to say, that we succesfully switched from a wind*s pdc to the samba 3 beta1 pdc. it all looks to work fine., we use tdbsam as pasword back end.. the only worries i get is the fact that some how the local user groups (administrator, users, guest ect ect) won't realy work. i mapped them in the same way i did with the domain groups (and those work just fine) but as soon as i use the windows user manager and select a local group, it gives an error in return. (the same action with domain groups works fine) second question i have is the password expire date, how can i set this up. now every user has to change once in a while, and also the computer ($) account's have 1 30 day valite time before expire.. (coz some workstations are win2k and other 98). i viewed the user list with pbdedit and most of them were 30 days and a few were valite till 2038. ?!? how do i change these dates ? (didn't work from within the wind*s user manager) well that's all what this happy samba user has to say... Would it be possible to change or add another mounting method for samba, instead of using smbclient -L host -U username To change this to use the standard URI format of smbclient smb://username:password@host and to mount mount smb://username:password@host/shared folder The current format is fine but if we could use a standard format for all network access it would improve the consistency. Thanks Karl PS. It would also be nice to use the same format for nfs etc. how likely do you think it is that the community at large would be willing to accept this format, we already use this method for http ftp and similar? [Samba] Prevent Samba from setting the execute bit (with inheritACLs set to YES) ?
Hi there Linux (redhat 9.0) does not set the execute-bits for new files, (even with umask set to 777) by default. Why does samba ? When default ACLs are set, samba explicitly sets the mode to 777 for new files and directories, and then somehow corrects them according to the default ACLs. As the default ACLs have to contain an executable bit to allow access to newly created directories, every new file will have this bit set, too. Is it possible to tell samba to treat new files and new directories in different ways to reflect standard unix behavior ? ( i.e. set mode to 666 for files and 777 for dirs) BTW, even setting the force security to 666 does not prevent the file from beeing created with 777 ... [Samba] Samba 3 Beta and Encryption Issues
Hi All, This is an update/question about the new beta release of Samba. I installed it onto a test bay. One machine is Redhat 7.3, one is XP. For our purposes, the clients need to have encryption turned off (IE: we enabled cleartext passwords). With Samba 2.2.7, I had PDC support, including roving profiles and login scripts working when ecryption was turned on, both server-side and client-side. Unfortunately, I need to have encryption turned off due to server issues that are unavoidable at the moment. Now, with the new beta release, I have the exact same connectivity level working, only with encryption turned on server side, but turned OFF client side. As somebody else posted - is this a bug, or a feature? :) Our ideal solution would be to have encryption turned off server side and use an LDAP backend for authentication. With Samba 3, will it be possible to do so and still support roving profiles and true domain logins? Migrating passwords would be a huge hassle. Thanks for your help! Dan - Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Hi, In my smb.conf I've the following IDMAP setup : passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://127.0.0.1 idmap backend = ldap:ldap://127.0.0.1 idmap uid = 2000-1 idmap gid = 2000-4000 ldap admin dn = cn=admin,o=xxx,c=be ldap suffix = o=xxx,c=be ldap machine suffix = ou=Computers ldap user suffix = ou=Users ldap idmap suffix = ou=Idmap ldap ssl = no The idmap mapping (sid uid/gid) is correctly save in the directory under ou=idmap,o=xxx,c=be. but also in the winbindd_idmap.tdb file. I've done a test by deleting this file. After that if I launch pdbedit -L, samba rebuild the all idmap mapping in winbindd_idmap.tdb but also in the LDAP directory. Then in LDAP, there is for each group and user 2 idmap entries !! Strange !! Any suggestion ? [Samba] How to authenticate to CVS via Winbind?
Hi! As a Samba newbie I have a big problem getting my Win2000 Server PDC users to authenticate to CVS/SSH on my samba 2.2.3a-12.3 debian woody machine. The linux server is member of the Windows Domain, and users can login via the network neighbourhood and their domain passwords (style: DOMAIN\user). wbinfo -u gives me all the known Domain users, so I think winbind is working correctly... Is there a detailled documentation out there showing how to fix these problems? Use google a lot, but didn't find appropriate solutions for my environment. As far as I understood, one has to use the pam_winbind.so module (in /etc/nsswitch.for example) which is installed on my system. I would be very thankful if somebody could give me a hint. Thanks a lot in advance, Tobi -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

In my case the special smb.conf entry only will be created, if the loglevel is = 3 and smb.conf will be completely written via a shell script from an config file. Only root users can change the config file and create a new smb.conf via the script. [Samba] special share
Topic: special share Running system: SuSE 7.2 (kernel 2.2.4) samba-3.0.0beta1 The is coexisting Win(Millennium) system at the server (reason: many win partitions MUST be directly available at the central unit under windows system after rebooting to windows). People connect their laptops (with small HD and predominately Win2k SP2) to central unit and samba offers shares with Linux accounts. However, there are many win partitions (previously created for any user) at the same computer equipped with many HD (6 at present time). It is not possible to mount all win partitions - too many. Usual mounting scripts entails left mounted partitions after logout or closed connections (users behave in this way). In many cases the same (already mounted and left partition) is used by few users. PROBLEM: is it possible to create specific share, mounting some particular windows partition in accordance with user during logon and UNMOUNT it during logout or closed connection (from another HD at the same computer)? [Samba] Emailing links from Samba DFS fileserver
Hello, I have a Samba DFS server set up (self compiled, running version 2.2.5) on a RedHat 7.3 box and I'm having a strange problem with my Windows 2000 clients. The problem occurs when we try to email a link to a file on the Samba server to another user. It happens with various types of files, but as an example, let's say I email a link to an Excel document to another user: \\frg1\shared\ew ops plan\2003\Deployment Matrix\FY03OpsPlanDeployment.xls The user recipient then clicks on the link, the Link Location Browser pops up, acting like it can't find the file. It works if the user copies the link into the Windows Run box, or into Windows Explorer or even if the user navigates to it using the Link Location Browser, but it can't find it when it is clicked on in the email. If the user navigates to that file or goes to Start-Run and punches it in, it will stay in cache and the user can click on it in the email and it will work fine. If the link points to one of the Windows 2000 Servers, it will load when it is clicked on, so it's specific to Samba. Also Windows XP clients seem to not have a problem loading the links either. Anybody have any ideas? Anyone seen this problem before? I've seen a thing as displayName in the sambaAccount. Is this a replacement for the username map??? (with ldap userdata can very easily modified. They take 5-10 seconds whereas connections to native Windows servers are nearly instant. 2) The WinXP machines seem to disconnect the SMB session to the Samba servers ASAP rather than waiting the 15 minute period. They take 5-10 seconds whereas connections to native Windows servers are nearly instant. 2) The WinXP machines seem to disconnect the SMB session to the Samba servers ASAP rather than waiting the 15 minute period. Combined with the above problem, this is killing performance for several applications we have in house. Any ideas what could be causing either problem? We are running Samba 2.2.4 on Solaris 2.8. [Samba] How to get Samba to listen on private network without aphysical interface
Hello, I have seen many many pages describing how to set up Samba with pptpd by having pptpd assigning a small range of IP's on an existing physical (eth*) lan. That all makes sense to me. However, I do not have that kind of setup. I am leasing a server, and it is not on a private lan, so I do not have a physical interface to associate with the network I want to use (172.16.0.0/16). I have pptpd assign remote IP's from the 172.16.1.1-254 range and local IP's from the 172.16.2.1-254 range; and I want Samba to listen on 172.16.3.1. The trouble is, I don't know how to create a virtual interface to which I can associate the 172.16.0.0/16 network and still be able to have pptpd use it. Please send replies to the list, otherwise you will have to deal with my whitelist. [Samba] Changing ownership of a file or folder from within windows?
Hi everyone, I have a Redhat 8 server running samba 2.2.8a and have configured samba to use winbind so that I can control access to the file shares using user and group accounts that have been set up in our windows NT domain. This all works fine on the shares I set up from within the smb.conf file. Windows 2000 users can access the shares just by logging into our domain. But what I would like to do is control user or group access to a file or a folder that has been created underneath one of the initial samba shares. For example: if I have a samba share called temp and I then access this share from a windows 2000 PC and create a new folder inside temp called myfolder can I then go to the properties of this new folder, click on the security tab and then add or remove users or groups from the NT domain that can have access to myfolder. At the moment if I try do this I can add users or groups from our domain and specify what access each should have ie: read only or full control, but when I click on the OK button to apply these changes I get an error saying Unable to save permission changes on myfolder. Access is denied . Is this type of permission change possible and if so what am I doing wrong? Just as an asside, I have set samba up as a windows print server in the past using winbind and our NT domain accounts/groups for authentication and have been able to control access to the shared printers through the security tab no problems.
