WG: [Samba] User manager for Domains for samba 3.0 PDC
>Can I use "User Manager for Domains" (usrmgr.exe) in a samba 3.0 domain? >When I tried to add a user with usrmgr I Received error "Access Denied" but the user was created in ldap and it was >added as a memberUid in Domain Users group. >Is "User Manager for Domains" compatible with samba 3.0 domain? Noramly you can use usrmgr. You need to log into Samba as User with admin (root) rights on samba server. In your ldap database should also exist an entry for root. When using swat, be carefull, because swat appends the ldap suffix ,with each change you make within swat, to the user, group, machine and imap suffix. This can also result in "illegal stub" or causing logon problems. This is a reported bug in swat. You can configure your samba server to provide the netlogon service (ie: be a DC) but your Win2K systems will not like it. You should either install a local Win2K DC or switch the central Win2K DC to a Samba server. - John T. -- John H Terpstra Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

I still think there is a problem with samba or the linux kernel, because with the nic card set wrongly on thw windows 2000 machine, thus causing lots of lost packets, I was able to transfer files easily between windows machines, all be it slowly. Using smbclient I can find the printmode is graphical but when I try to print anything graphical it doesn't work. I copied my old smb.conf file from Redhat 8 and it had worked. I have tried changing printing = to cups but that didn't help. Yes my printer is set to share through cups if that make any difference. I won't hold this against it though, since I know how fragile win2K can be. What would you suggest if I need ACL and quota support along with Samba 3? I tried using the Debian XFS boot iso, but it suggested that I can do a net install from it, which appears to be wrong. (it wanted CDs, and I haven't pulled them down yet). Currently we're running production boxes on various versions of RH 6/7/8 and Samba 2.2.8, most of them using XFS for ACL and quota support. I've had much better luck getting these things going with XFS than with EXT3, and it has proven to be rock solid for ~ 2 years now. [Samba] Problems using smbldaptools
Evening everyone. Im currently having some problems using the smbldap tools to add groups, users and such. Im using Samba 3.0.1pre3 with OpenLDAP 2.1.22. I have setup the required files: /etc/nsswitch.conf, /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/samba3/smb.conf I also configured smbldap_conf.pm as well to reflect my setup. (Quick side note: I have two of these files: one in /etc/samba3 and the other in /usr/share/samba3/scripts...does one have precedence over the other?) I also added the inital LDAP tree settings. (Users, computers, etc.) When I try to use the tools from the command line to add a group or a user, I get the following errors: $ smbldap-groupadd3 loanofficers failed to add entry: modifications require authentication at /usr/share/samba3/scripts//smbldap_tools.pm line 494, line 283. It complains about authentication. I also took a look at line 494: $modify->code && die "failed to add entry: ", $modify->error ; Here is what is above that: # $gid = group_add($groupname, $group_gid, $force_using_existing_gid) sub group_add { my ($gname, $gid, $force) = @_; my $nscd_status = system "/etc/init.d/nscd status >/dev/null 2>&1"; if ($nscd_status == 0) { system "/etc/init.d/nscd stop > /dev/null 2>&1"; } if (!defined($gid)) { while (defined(getgrgid($GID_START))) { $GID_START++; } $gid = $GID_START; } else { if (!defined($force)) { if (defined(getgrgid($gid))) { return undef; } } } if ($nscd_status == 0) { system "/etc/init.d/nscd start > /dev/null 2>&1"; } my $ldap_master=connect_ldap_master(); my $modify = $ldap_master->add ( "cn=$gname,$groupsdn", attrs => [ objectClass => 'posixGroup', cn => "$gname", gidNumber => "$gid" ] ); $modify->code && die "failed to add entry: ", $modify->error ; Check out this error I get when I try and add a user: $ smbldap-useradd3 -a testuser Can't call method "get_value" on an undefined value at /usr/bin/smbldap-useradd3 line 154, line 283. [Samba] Samba as a backup authentication server for Windows 2000 Server
Dear all, I searched through the Net but couldn't find a definitive answer to my question: is it possible to use Samba 3.x as a backup authentication server for Windows 2000 Server? What I'm looking for is a way to make sure that couple of workers placed in a remote office could always log into their workstations, even when VPN connection to the main office (where W2K server is located) is broken. I know Windows workstations cache logon credentials, but that does not solve my problem as the users also have to be able to use network shares of each other's workstations. What I need is a small local server which could act as a logon server when VPN is down. Our Windows 2000 domain is running in the native mode, so a classic PDC/BDC setup is not possible without rebuilding the whole domain. All comments and ideas are warmly welcome. =) - Jyri -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] Login Server
Is it possible to set our Samba PDC to just act like a domain login server? I dont want it to store profles. Its a great concept but we dont want our users storing EMAIL on the server. Some of them have huge amounts of email. The roaming profile works great atm but we do not want to implement this. Is there a way to set samba to not try and set a profile.pdf account up? We basically just want the user to log into the domain and once logged in to run whatever login.cmd file we have setup pushing out service packs and whatever other critical updates we want them to run. You installed a source rpm, not a binary RPM. it sin /usr/src/mandrake/SOURCES or something like that. you can make it into a binary rpm to install, rpm -bb samba3-3.0.0-1.1mdk.src.rpm and it'll compile and build the rpm and put in /usr/src/MANDRAKE/RPMS/i386 or something like that. [Samba] how to increase timeout?
If anyone has time to look at this problem I would appreciate it. I think I am looking for a way to increase the "timeout" in samba (in the smb.conf file) for reporting a "down" link or "can't read xyz file". my problem == We have a wan in which links from a central linux machine to a nodes which are xp machines from 1 to 5 minutes a night. not very common, but it happens. we are using samba to mount directories on the remote linux machines to the local linux server. (we use samba because we also have xp machines in our network it is just easier to use this for now). We use rsync nightly to backup remote directories to the local linux server. When one of the outages happes during a backup (rsync operation) either - if I have not set the --timout value in rsync the operation just continues. Rysnc seems not to notice that samba is reporting errors and just copies over I assume a bunch of . Of course the file is corrupted. - if I have set the --timeout value in rsync, in the case of failure rsync just drops out. Of course if i set the --timeout value to something like 2 minutes rsync seems to ignore the samba errors and continues. What I would like to do is set a timeout value in samba for reporting errors from what seems to be about 30 seconds to something like 6 minutes. Then I could set the --timeout value in rsync to something like 5 minutes. I can't find in man smb.conf anywhere were you can set something like "if you can't connect in 30 seconds" then report an error. Perhaps I should be using an rysnc server or some other method. [Samba] Authentication failed through SWAT
I'm now pointing my Samba 3 (this is a different computer, running Mandrake 9.1) to the correct TCP port of 901, but when I attempt to enter my root password, it rejects the login attempt and says, "Authentication failed! Do you want to retry?" Two things; retrying has included other legit usernames and passwords, but all have failed. Secondly, there is an account on my NT system called "root", and I changed the password on it to match the one, just in case it's trying to authenticate against the NT server (since this is Samba, and I have it on domain level security). smbfs is part of the Linux kernel and not Samba, and may not support large files. The official answer to this question is "use smbclient". Personally, I find split to be a great way to manage tar files. Example. tar -cz data/ | split -b 1024m - /mnt/share/bckp/bckp.tar.gz. Re: [Samba] LDAP, Active Directory, Redhat 9 Clients
su uses /etc/pam.d/su, so if that does not have winbind support then it will not accept the user. An easy way to configure pam on RedHat is to use authconfig. It has an option for windows authentication. When it is turned on it will add the winbind lines to /etc/pam.d/system-auth which all pam files on RedHat point to. The down side to this is they will be able to use anything that requires a password. So for example it you have remote x-logins enabled they would be able to login to an x-session. [Samba] problem destroying /dev/null
Working with Samba 3.0 on rh9. Set up samba to use tdbsam (small network, maybe 30-40 users tops) and be a PDC for the internal network. Will be joining machines to this domain. My smb.conf file has been configured to use tdbsam as the backend, and with an add machine script, add user script, etc. However, using the command: pdbedit -a jdoe results in "could not create account to add new user jdoe running the useradd script manually (as found in smb.conf) results in the user being added. running pdbedit -a -m jdoewks results in tdb_update_sam: SAM_ACCOUNT (jdoewks$) with no RID! unable to add machine! (does it already exist) However, running the machine script adds the machine to the user list (/etc/passwd), but obviously not the tdbsam. If I then use the RH9 user and groups tool to delete the machine account, it asks if I wish to delete the user's home directory, which is /dev/null. [Samba] Samba / XP drive listing problems
Welp, I have asked this question numerous times with no responses, so I'll try to rephrase it. I have a very upset client and need an answer soon. How do I configure samba or XP to display the drive listings correctly (shorter) in Windows Explorer? Other versions of Winbloze seem to display the lists of mapped drives just fine. XP displays this: Local Disk (C:) sys on 'Samba Server 2.2.7-security-rollup-fix on Server (Server) f:' Obviously the listing for the F: drive is way too long. How do I get it to display shorter? I have already set the netbios name and server string parameters in the smb.conf file and restarted the service. [Samba] Re: Still trying to backup 66 GB from LINUX to W2K
Both "rexec.exe" and "rsh.exe" from W2K have the problem. However, the "rsh.exe" from Hummingbird's Exceed package works just fine. I copied it into my cygWin's /usr/bin directory and did cd /cygdrive/c/temp time rsh p92 "cd /local;tar cbf 64 - SAS" | dd of=here.tar and the file is OK. It tars out all the files in SAS directory. Unfortunately cygWin's "ls -l" shows the file size modulo 2 GB, like this: -rw-rw-rw- 1 root mkpasswd 786464768 Nov 24 15:49 here.tar But W2K's dir sees the size correctly as: 24.11.2003 15:495.081.432.064 here.tar Note that the file is quite a bit smaller than the one obtained with W2K's "rexec.exe" and "rsh.exe" (21,043,160 bytes shorter), because there is no LF->CR/LF translation with Hummingbird's rsh.exe. |> But there's a little rub - the redirection on W2K side |> introduces a carriage-return character before each |> line-feed, like ftp in ascii mode. [Samba] Cannot list complete directory with (not really) large number of files from Win2K client after upgrade to 3.0.0x
hi folks unfortunately, i can only give you 2nd-hand info, because i usually do not have access to the machine/network i am reporting about: the server just upgraded from debian woody to debian sarge and thus samba 3.0.0final-1 was installed. now the Win2K client does not show all files in the home-directory of the accessing user which it did before with version 2.2.3. the home-directory contains about 500+ files/directories. i assume that it does not matter if the directory in question is the home-directory or any other beneath it. new directories can be created but they fail to be displayed on the client, though the new one exists as can be seen in a shell on the server. we also realised that moving some dirs/files around, thus reducing the total amount of items to be displayed, actually helps. the threshold could be 512 or so. there does not seem to be a parameter in smb.conf to adjust that number, so it seems that it is either "unlimited" (or better /proc/sys/fs/file-max) or defined somewhere in the sources to a relatively low number. though i found some rather old manual at http://www.os9samba.com/manual.html which talks about max-files-per-directory. well, this should describe the problem fair enough. i already reported a bug #220596) in debian, but no one replied to it, yet. the smb.conf is supplied and a log (level 3) of a session can be given if needed. please cc: me, i am not on the list. cheers, sebastian -- ::: .O. ::: ..O ::: OOO ::: lynx -source http://www.kodeaffe.de/shensche.pub | gpg --import # Samba config file created using SWAT # from localhost (127.0.0.1) # Date: 2000/10/11 21:05:02 # Global parameters [global] # Do something sensible when Samba crashes: mail the admin a backtrace panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d workgroup = ARBEITSGRUPPE encrypt passwords = true passdb backend = tdbsam guest map to guest = Bad User keepalive = 30 os level = 2 kernel oplocks = No log level = 3 log file = /etc/samba/error.log [homes] comment = Heimatverzeichnis writeable = Yes create mask = 0750 browseable = yes [printers] comment = All Printers path = /spool_tmp create mask = 0700 printable = Yes browseable = No [root_dir] comment = taurus root path = / valid users = si writeable = Yes [opt] comment = taurus opt path = /opt valid users = si writable = Yes [LexmarkC710] path = /spool_tmp hosts allow = 192.168. printable = Yes [raw] path= /spool_tmp hosts allow = 192.168. printable = Yes [Public] comment = all Public path = /mnt/sdb6/Public writeable = Yes signature.asc Description: Digital signature -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] samba3 with ldap: connections from WinXP and smbclient 3 are OK, but not from WinNT and smbclient 2
Hello, please excuse if this question was asked before, but I wasn't able to find an answer for my problem in the list archive nor (with google) on a website. Here is my problem: I use Samba 3 from Debian/unstable together with ldap. The ldap-server is a NDS Server (Novell directory service/eDirectory). Authentication works well - with the smbclient of samba 3.x - from Windows2000 with EnablePlainTextPassword enabled in the registry - from WindowsXP with RequireSignOrSeal disabled but it fails with the error message "session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE" for the same account - with the smbclient of samba 2.x - from WinNT with or without PlainPasswords enabled in the registry I checked the ldap requests with ethereal: in all cases it's the same request and the same response, except that requests from the first group uses unicode encoded and the latter ansi encoded passwords. I'm not sure if the login failure is caused by this difference. I would like to check it, but I don't know how to change this settings. Does anybody else know? But I guess that I didn't find the necessary settings to make samba 3 accepting logins from WinNT and the older smbclient at all. [Samba] Re: Re: Office 2000 / Windows 2000
Thanks Bob Unfortunately I have tried all manor of combinations of op locks, etc. and nothing makes any difference. I don't think this is anything to do with locking - when you change the read only bit in file properties on the windows box there is nothing on the log, i.e. this happens totally on the client and not on the server. This must be more to do with the way the client is being advised of the status of the file after it is saved for the first time. I am not hopeful about this, as I can see similar posts about this in the archive (relating to 2.2.8 as well) and no answers... Thanks Nick "Bob Crandell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, I stopped having trouble with MS Office any version with oplocks turned off. kernel oplocks = no oplocks = no level2 oplocks = no Bob Nick Gale ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote: > >Further to this, I have upgraded to the latest Pre release as I have seen >similar posts about this and Jeremy's advice to upgrade. > >It has made no difference I'm afraid. > >One other side to this problem that other people have posted about is that >Excel reports a read only file as doesn't exist. i.e. you can not open a >read only file at all. > >Help please! > >Thanks > >Nick >"Nick Gale" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message >news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >> Hi >> >> I have just upgraded to Samba 3.0.0 and have found a problem with Office >> 2000 running on Windows 2000. [Samba] problem getting windows 95/98 to logon
Hi, I have installed Samba 3.0 the other day, and it works great on my XP machines. However, Windows 95 and 98 machines display an error when trying to authenticate at the samba domain. In dutch the error says: "Ongeldige parameter" which translates (if i am not mistaken) to "Illegal parameter". Does anyone know anything about this problem? Thanks already! -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Cannot open directory
Dear collegues, after upgrading to samba-2.2.8a, a client using Windows 98 cannot open any sub-directory in his network drive. When we used previous samba version, there were no problems at all. Can you help us? Thank you in advance, regards -- Ing.
