[Samba] Mac OS upgrade upsets access to samba shares

2008-04-08 Thread Helen Nulty

Mac OS details:
Our client was able to access her network resources without any problem
until yesterday.

She is using a high end Macbook Pro. She has the latest full version of
Dave 7.1 installed. Her Mac OS X is 10.4.11

When she attempts to connect to these resources she receives the
following error:

The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in
smb:// could not be read or written. (Error code -36).

Attempts to connect to the shares have used fully qualified domain names:

smb://server.my.domain/share_name

Her Domain password is correct and working. We tested it out on a PC.

Samba server details:
client is on different subnet from samba server
no evidence on samba logs of connection attempt by client

Re: [Samba] SWAT says nmbd not running when it is

2007-06-22 Thread Helen Nulty

In case anyone was wondering about this one...

we were using
socket address = x.x.x.x

Once we let this default to use all addresses, the status of nmbd in
SWAT was correctly displayed.

Question for the group:
Is any performance improvement realized by specifying the socket
address?

[Samba] Is %U in msdfs root share broken in 3.0.2?

2004-05-07 Thread Helen Nulty
Any thoughts on this?

With samba 2.2.8a on solaris 8 we greated an msdfs root for all users
like so:
[myfiles]
comment = Individual User Shared Spaces
  path = /home/%U/share
  msdfs root = Yes

Then under this share folder, we put all the links to other shares that
they needed.
list of /usr0/userid/share:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 19 Dec 10 16:00 hbhe_share -
msdfs:sph1\hbhe_shr
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 25 Dec 10 16:00 my_files -
msdfs:sph1\homes\my_files
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 23 Dec 8 16:43 flash_applications
- msdfs:maximus\FlashApps
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 27 Jul 11 2003 my_my_files -
msdfs:sph1\testsmb\my_files
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 18 May 21 2003 iis_share -
msdfs:sph1\iis_shr
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 19 May 21 2003
veritas_netbackup_pro - msdfs:sph1\vnbp_pro

Now, with RedHat Linux AS version 3 this scheme does not work. Whenever
we try to access
one of the links under /usr0/userid/share we get a pop-up message that
says:
H:myfiles refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a
harddrive on this computer... etc.

smbd.log at level 10 and smb.conf attached to an earlier message that is
being held by moderator because file is too big!

We will appreciate any insights.

[Samba] samba configuration question

2004-01-15 Thread Helen Nulty
We have a central campus kerberos server. We have a local
Active Directory domain which is a member of the main campus
forest. We have 2 samba 3.0 servers currently configured:
security = domain
password server = SPHDC0 SPHDC1
where SPHDC0 is the primary domain controller, SPHDC1 is
backup domain controller and neither of which runs in native
mode.

We want everyone, for both domain and samba services, to
authenticate to the main campus kerberos server. Say we get
over the hurdle of having our domain logins authenticated by
the main campus kerberos server. Can we keep our existing
samba configuration and in a transitive manner effectively
authenticate to the main campus kerberos server as well for
our samba connections?

If not, how can we do this?

We will appreciate any insights anyone has to offer. We're
willing to share what we learn.

Thank you,

Helen Nulty

Re: [Samba] installing samba printer on windows xp

We ran into this also. We learned that there is a Point and Print
Restrictions Policy Setting in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP that may
prevent some users from installing the new printers. See this article:

well, i am the system administrator and am not sure where to go next.

maybe i've missed some documentation? or someone can help explain

[Samba] Samba Printer Administration

2003-08-04 Thread Helen Nulty
How do you handle general samba print job administration?
Anyone have print command scripts to share?

We would like our printer admins to be able to pause and
resume printing. Now we get Error processing command
when Pause Printing is attempted from an NT workstation.
I presume this is because the admin lacks authority to
execute the lppause/lpresume commands. Ours are:
lp -d %p -%j -H hold
lp -d %p -%j -H resume

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: [Samba] How do I upgrade from 2.2.5 to 2.2.8

The make revert command works. It replaces the binaries with previous version
saved as ---.old by the make install process.

   Thanks so much,

I recently upgraded from Samba 2.2.2 to 2.2.8 from source. I had a quick
look at the Makefile before I started and there are rules for installing
the files, uninstalling the files and reverting the files to the previous
 version.

I simply unpacked the source into /tmp/download, cd'd to
 /tmp/download/samba-2.2.8/source, issued a './configure' and a 'make',
then su'd to the root user and inssued a 'make install'.

The install process backed up all of the old files it was replacing (to
filename.old) and didnt touch any of the tdb files or smb.conf itself. I
restarted Samba and everything ran fine!

As everything went okay, I've not had to use the 'make revert' command,
but looking at the Makefile, I see no reason for it not to work. Does
anyone have any experience of using it?

Everyone:

By way of confirmation of dfs problems with 2.2.8, we are unable to make
msdfs root shares work for WinXP clients when we map them using the netbios

netbios name. Everything works fine with WinNT and Win2K.

I tried to clear the cache on the client side with dfsutil.exe that

Can anyone else confirm this problem?

It's also strange that on the WinXP clients the version of the samba
server is still registered as a previous version (2.2.6 or 2.2.7).

 Cheers.

[Samba] difference in valid users = 2.2.5 to 2.2.8

2003-03-19 Thread Helen Nulty
We just updated a 2.2.5 samba server to 2.2.8 and note a
difference in the way valid users are determined.

In 2.2.5, we could have
unix user user1 in unix group groupA
AND
NIS+ user user2 in a NIS+ group groupA

We set valid users = @groupA for samba share groupA_shr
and both user1 and user2 could gain acces to groupA_shr.

This configuration does NOT work with samba 2.2.8.
In the example described, only unix user1 can gain access to
groupA_shr.

We are running solaris 2.8 on a Netra T1 server. Pertinent
info from smb.conf attached. Have we been relying on an
undocumented feature all this time with 2.2.5? Is samba
2.2.8 designed to work this new way?

We can make all our unix users NIS+ users but that will take
time.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
