Re: [Samba] Domain logons and client IP broadcasts

2007-02-06 Thread Sebastian Held
I'm sorry, but I don't know the cause.
You should make sure, that Lab-119 actually uses DHCP.
Have a look at the blocked packets of the firewall and compare with Lab-101.
I had the same error domain not available, but a different scenario... I
think it was solved, by joining the PDC to itself - but seems not be related
to your problem.

If Lab-119 is a windows machine, I would recommend a reinstall - most times
this work quite well ;)

kind regards,
Sebastian

Firstly, thanks for your help in this , Sebastion. You have been amazingly
 patient.

 OK: More data:
Lab-101 is set with a firewall that permits broadcasts, and allows
 domain logins.

Lab-119 is set with a firewall that blocks broadcasts. From it i get a
 'domain not available'
message, but if I log in with a cached roaming profile, network shares
 work.

Conan is the PDC of my domain, SJSA and is the master browser. I have a
 single
network, so it is also the local master.

 conan# nmblookup -R -U sjsa -S lab-118
 querying lab-101 on 192.168.1.241
 192.168.1.101 lab-10100
 Looking up status of 192.168.1.118
 LAB-10100 - M ACTIVE
 SJSA00 - GROUP M ACTIVE
 SJSA1e - GROUP M ACTIVE

 conan# nmblookup -R -U sjsa -S lab-119
 querying lab-119 on 192.168.1.241
 192.168.1.119 lab-11900
 Looking up status of 192.168.1.119
 LAB-119 00 - M ACTIVE
 SJSA00 - GROUP M ACTIVE
 SJSA1e - GROUP M ACTIVE

*** No effective difference between the two types.

 Relevent chunks of smb.conf
workgroup = SJSA
netbios name = CONAN
server string = Conan the Librarian
security = DOMAIN
 **

 Excerpt from nmbd -d2
Samba server CONAN is now a domain master browser for workgroup SJSA on
 subnet 192.168.1.241
 *
 announce_local_master_browser_to_domain_master_browser:
We are both a domain and a local master browser for workgroup SJSA. Do
 not announce to ourselves

 *
Runing findsmb from a workstation not running nmbd shows that
Conan is a master and local browse master, and postie is a local browse
 master.

If I log in from lab-101 the following shows up in the nmbd log file.
 process_logon_packet: Logon from 192.168.1.101: code = 0x12
 process_logon_packet: Logon from 192.168.1.101: code = 0x12

 process_logon_packet: Logon from 192.168.1.101: code = 0x12

 and the logon is succesful.

If I log on from lab-119 no lines show up, and the attempt fails.

If I run tcpdump -vvv host 192.168.1.119 during a login there are no
packets at all. However there is sporadic traffic between lab-119 and
 Conan.

We have a Samba domain that is running well. We have 10 Samba/CUPS

Samba-3 HOWTO to install the drivers. Over time, we learned to pay
particular attention the the printer initialization gotchas in section
 17.7.4 on page 238 :)

Now let's say that 100 client PCs have installed Printer X with
 Point-and-Print Add Printer Wizard.

But then say an updated driver comes out for that model or we realize
that the initial default settings for Printer X aren't ideal --
 duplexer not initialized, say.

Without creating a new Samba/CUPS queue with a different name, is
there a straightforward way to install updated drivers (or the same
drivers so that they can be reinitialized) and then forcing client PCs
 to adopt the new/tweaked drivers?

The latter circumstance (we'd like to reinitialized the drivers for 1
printer) is actually our situation, but it occurred to me that the
issue would come up any time we'd like to distribute updated drivers.

 Thanks!

Hi,

you can use the utmp logging feature.
Place the following options in the global group of smb.conf:
utmp = Yes
utmp directory = /var/log/samba/utmp
wtmp directory = /var/log/samba/wtmp

then
mkdir -p /var/log/samba/utmp
mkdir -p /var/log/samba/wtmp
touch /var/log/samba/utmp/utmpx
touch /var/log/samba/wtmp/wtmpx

This should do the trick. The command last -f /var/log/samba/wtmp/wtmpx shows
you the infos.

see attached patch for the last-command. If you have a look into the wtmpx

There are two connections to the server (denoted by smb/1 and /2). For example
(don't know if I'm right...) the initial connection to the netlogon share may
be the cause.

You're using debian I think. For the patch too do anything useful you need
the development package for sysvinit (should be called sysvinit-dev.deb I
think). Additionally you need the full devel toolchain including gcc the
compiler, patch and so on.
Now extract the sysvinit-dev.deb file (do not know how to do it on debian
maybe try midnight commander mc). You got a tar-ball or direct the needed
directory structure with the src folder.
Go into this src folder put my patch file (last.patch) in it and execute:
patch last.patch
this command responds with:
patching file last.c
And finally you can type:
make last
which in turn responds with:
gcc -Wall -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -D_GNU_SOURCE -c -o last.o last.c
gcc -s -o last last.o

And, voila! you have a new executeable last.

[Samba] high cpu load with 3.0.20b (not using ldap)

Hi,

I've a problem, with a cpu load (66% while running a separate virusscanner
with another 30%) of one of my smbd processes. It only happens occasionally
(approx. 2 times in the last 4 weeks). The backtrace is attached.
It seems to me, that smbd is looking for colorlaser5quota. This printer isn't
attached anymore to the server and neither cups nor samba configuration
files include a section for this printer.
Is this error due to a bug in libc.so.6 not returning from __nis_hash() ?
Or because this machine is a NIS-server?

Hi,

I already checked the WINS settings (they are statically set) should not be the
problem. But thanks for your answer!
I will double check it again.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem... using the rpm from SuSE-9.2 (version 3.0.9...)
Upgrading to 3.0.20 doesn't solve it.
Some users can login from a particular workstation, while others cannot. I
don't know how to debug that kind of failure (Error dialog from WinXP said
something like domain is not available)

The problem shows up right after adding a new user to the samba server. But
don't know if it is the cause.

Sebastian
