[Samba] cupsaddsmb question

2010-03-18 Thread Mester

Hi,

I had a working Samba PDC server (v3.2.5) with CUPS printer server and
automatic Windows driver installation.
But I had to add Windows 7 clients to the server so I updated the Samba
from Lenny-Backports to 3.4.7. Everything seems to be OK, but when I run
cupsaddsmb it does not add the drivers to the server. Everything is fine
but at the last step (rpcclient setdriver x y) it fails. The error is
WERR_INVALID_PARAM

What should I do to make cupsaddsmb work again?

I have found the problem. The printer name had a - in it, and that
caused the problem. I made the same printer with the same settings under
cups but now without the - sign and voi la everything works fine.

automatic Windows driver installation.

[Samba] cupsaddsmb not working after upgrade to Lenny (rpcclient - WERR_INVALID_PARAM)

2009-08-22 Thread Ralph Kutschera

Dear list,

I've upgraded my server from Etch to Lenny and now the printer (HP
LaserJet 6P) does not work any more through Samba.

Printing a testpage via http://server:631 works perfectly so I skip
giving details about the CUPS setup.

Also lpstat reports the printer working
# lpstat -a
HP_LaserJet_6P accepting requests

I tried to rerun cupsaddsmb. The driver files are copied to the
print$-share (I can see them in /etc/samba/drivers) and also the first
RPC call 'adddriver' is reported successful. The second one 'setdriver'
ends with 'WERR_INVALID_PARAM', see output:

Re: [Samba] cupsaddsmb not working after upgrade to Lenny (rpcclient - WERR_INVALID_PARAM)

2009-08-22 Thread Ralph Kutschera

Another thing I found out:

When calling the 'setdriver' command with rpcclient the syntax is
setclient printer driver

I guess that means to assign a driver to a printer.

I furthermore read in Google that samba should find CUPS printers
automatically, at least after a restart.

Nevertheless, 'enumprinters' does not return any printers:
# rpcclient localhost
Password:
rpcclient $ enumprinters
No printers returned.

I know that the right password has been entered and I've tried the name
prefixed with the domain name as well. I've also tried wbinfo -g and -u
which both work and -t works fine. The machine has also been successfully
been attached to the domain and net rpc getsid BGS returns the correct sid.

If anyone can shine some light on this I'd be grateful :)

Cheers,

[Samba] cupsaddsmb

2006-01-26 Thread Andreas Fladischer

hi!

i've a problem with my samba server and the cupsaddsmb tool for windows
nt4.0 clients. I'm using cups 1.1.22 and samba 3.0.20b!

the problem is, if i do a cupsaddsmb printer it will generate a
directory with the drivers for windows. these drivers works perfectly
with Win2000 Xp but they don't work with Win NT4.0!

i used the cups-samba-1.1.19.tar.gz package to install the cups printer
drivers but they wouldn't work under nt4.0!

maybe someone can help me - i hope so! :-)

thanks in advance

[Samba] Cupsaddsmb only running setdriver

2005-06-07 Thread M. Maas
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi All,

I downloaded a fresh cd (Debian 3.1) to install a Printserver with.

I've come to the bit that I can run cupsaddsmb, and expected it to
run smbclient to add the drivers to the print$ share, and then
rpcclient to do the addriver part and finaly the setdriver part.

Unfortunatly, it is doing only the setdriver part, completely
skipping all the previous steps it should take.

This is the output:

amsprint:/home/mark# cupsaddsmb -U root -v -a
Password for root required to access localhost via SAMBA:
Running command: rpcclient localhost -N -U'root%keepitsimple' -c
'setdriver Test2 Test2'
Succesfully set Test2 to driver Test2.

amsprint:/home/mark#

See? No smbclient, no addriver, nothing it just skips it?

My smb.conf:

[Samba] cupsaddsmb problem

2005-05-13 Thread Julian Pilfold-Bagwell
Hi all,

I have a problem with adding point and print to a print server. The server
details are as follows:

700MHz Celeron + 384MB RAM
Mandriva LE2005 (Mandrake 10.2)
Samba 3.0.13-2mdk
CUPS 1.1.23
cups drivers 10.2-0.11
gimpprint-cups 2-1.1.23-11
foomatic 3.0.2-1

The server is bound to an NT4 based domain (to be replaced with Linux/Samba in
the summer) and winbind works fine with wbinfo -u and -g returning a full
list of users and groups.

Cups works fine printing from Linux clients but when I run cupsaddsmb to
deliver the drivers to the XP client machines it fails to copy the files to
the named folder.

Running the command gives the output below:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] printers]# cupsaddsmb -U jpb -h localhost HPLaserJet5L
Password for jpb required to access localhost via SAMBA:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] printers]#

Running it in verbose mode only gives the following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] printers]# cupsaddsmb -U jpb -h localhost -v HPLaserJet5L
Password for jpb required to access localhost via SAMBA:
Running command: rpcclient localhost -N -U'jpb%pwchanged' -c 'setdriver
HPLaserJet5L HPLaserJet5L'
Succesfully set HPLaserJet5L to driver HPLaserJet5L.

the final line of which suggests it's worked but the drivers aren't copied to
the /var/lib/samba/printers folder and the clients can't find the drivers
when p+p is tried.

The smb.conf is shown below:

Any help with this greatly appreciated. I get the feeling that it's something
really obvious that I'm overlooking but I've been going round in circles and
can't see the wood for the trees.

RE: [Samba] cupsaddsmb problem

2005-05-13 Thread Bruno Guerreiro
Hi,
I think that that is more of a cups problem rather than Samba's.
I'm having the same problem with cups-1.1.22-0.rc1.8.5 on FC3.
cupsaddsmb is adding only the NT4/win9x drivers (if they exist in Samba).
Using the cupsaddsmb from cups-1.1.20-11.6 works like a charm.

Subject: [Samba] cupsaddsmb problem

Hi all,

I have a problem with adding point and print to a print server. The server
details are as follows:

700MHz Celeron + 384MB RAM
Mandriva LE2005 (Mandrake 10.2)
Samba 3.0.13-2mdk
CUPS 1.1.23
cups drivers 10.2-0.11
gimpprint-cups 2-1.1.23-11
foomatic 3.0.2-1

The server is bound to an NT4 based domain (to be replaced with Linux/Samba
in
the summer) and winbind works fine with wbinfo -u and -g returning a full
list of users and groups.

Succesfully set HPLaserJet5L to driver HPLaserJet5L.

the final line of which suggests it's worked but the drivers aren't copied
to
the /var/lib/samba/printers folder and the clients can't find the drivers
when p+p is tried.

The smb.conf is shown below:

and the permissions are set as follows on the /var/lib/samba/printers

with the same on the subdirectories. jpb, bm and ew are named as allowed

[Samba] cupsaddsmb fails - files are not copied

2005-03-08 Thread Heini Hansen
Hello,

i have problems getting the automatic driver installation for windows
clients running.
i am using cupsaddsmb, it creates the WIN40 Directory and tells me its
putting files - but the Directory remains empty - and thats, so i
guess, the reason for the rpccleint command failing (DOS error
0x0042 smth.)

what am i doing wrong?

[Samba] Cupsaddsmb

2005-02-01 Thread Lott, William
I have been trying to make a printer available to our department. I
want to set it up so that Samba exports the driver to the Window's
computer the first time the first attaches to the printer on the
network. I did it once before successfully with an older version of
Samba and Fredora Core 2. Now I am trying to do it with Fredora Core 3
without success. Below is the message I get every time I try to run
Cupsaddsmb.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# cupsaddsmb -U root -v -a

cupsaddsmb: No PPD file for printer ECON - skipping!

cupsaddsmb: No PPD file for printer Economics - skipping!

Any help anyone can give to get this setup correctly, I would
appreciate.

[Samba] cupsaddsmb problems...

2004-11-05 Thread Jason Williams
Hey everyone.
Having a little problem getting cupsaddsmb to work correctly. I have been
reading throw the Samb 3 book today as i am trying to have the ability for
drivers for our printers to be automatically downloaded when a client adds
the printer.

I am using:
FreeBSD 4.10
samba 2.2.11
cups 1.1
cups-samba
I put the following info in smb.conf:
[printers]
   comment = All printers
   path = /var/spool/samba
   printer admin = root jwilliams
   guest ok = yes
   printable = yes
   browseable = no
   hosts allow = 192.168.1.
   printer name = HP8150 4th floor
   public = yes
   writeable = no
[print$]
   comment = Printer Drivers
   path = /usr/local/share/cups/drivers
   browseable = yes
   guest ok = no
   read only = yes
   write list = root
On the 'printer's portion, the printer name section, is a printer that I
added through the cups web interface.

I then proceeded to execute this command:
cupsaddsmb -U root -a -v (for verbose output)
Here is the output:
oxygen# cupsaddsmb -U root -a -v
Password for root required to access localhost via SAMBA:

i appreciate the help.

[Samba] cupsaddsmb and .inf files

2004-10-22 Thread clif
Hi,

I've also got problems downloading drivers from samba to a windows client.

I'm running Debian Samba 3.0.7-1, and Cupssys 1.1.20final
My Windows Client is a Win2KPro.

I succesfully installed my printers with Cups and they work fine under
Linux, and from remote cups clients.

I've been trying to follow the samba docs on serving postscript drivers
for cups from the print share in section:

http://us4.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/CUPS-printing.html#id2563178

I run cupsaddsmb, it seems to work fine, and the files show up in
/etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/2 which matches my
path = /etc/samba/drivers line in my smb.conf file. (Full listing
below). Typical cupsaddsmb output is:

---
cupsaddsmb -v myprinter
Password for root required to access localhost via SAMBA:
Running command: smbclient //localhost/print\$ -N -U'root%secret' -c
'mkdir W32X86;put /var/spool/cups/tmp/4179785a142d2

Domain=[HOUSE] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.7-Debian]

putting file /usr/share/cups/drivers/cupsdrv5.dll as \W32X86/cupsdrv5.dll

putting file /usr/share/cups/drivers/cupsui5.dll as \W32X86/cupsui5.dll

putting file /usr/share/cups/drivers/cups5.hlp as \W32X86/cups5.hlp
(4633.3 kb/s) (average 3709.3 kb/s)

Running command: rpcclient localhost -N -U'root%secret' -c 'adddriver
Windows NT x86
myprinter:cupsdrv5.dll:myprinter.ppd:cupsui5.dll:cups5.hlp:NULL:RAW:NULL'
Printer Driver myprinter successfully installed.

Running command: rpcclient localhost -N -U'root%secret' -c 'setdriver
myprinter myprinter'
Succesfully set myprinter to driver myprinter.
---

The expected files appeared in /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/2/ which were:

myprinter.ppd* cups5.hlp* cupsdrv5.dll* cupsui5.dll*

When I point my win2k client at a networked printer I get these mesages:

The server on which the myprinter printer resides does not have the
correct printer dirver installed.
If you want to install the driver on your local computer, click Ok.

Then I get the flashlight dialog box with the title Connecting to
myprinter on houseserv

Lastly I get a box with The file '*.INF' on (Unknown) is needed

I'm not sure why it says (Unknown) here but It's a home network that
mostly uses /etc/hosts files but I don't think windows has these so I have
to trust that it can find the network shares using samba, and they do show
up just fine.

In my Samba log file I get:

[2004/10/22 13:15:08, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(800)
  windoze-6uqevsu (192.168.0.2) couldn't find service
::{2227a280-3aea-1069-a2de-08002b30309d}

But I'm not sure what this service number relates to.

A while back Michael Lueck posted a hand made INF file to work with the
adobe universal driver which looks like this:
---
; PSCRIPT.INF
;
; Michael Lueck, Lueck Data Systems
; Version 1.1
; This INF is intended to be used with:

Now I tried to edit this to work with the Cups set of files but I'm not a
windows hacker and it still gave me the same message. Maybe one needs to
do more than just copying it into /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/2 and restart
samba?

I've been searching high and low on how to do this but haven't found too
many clues yet. It would be helpfull to know which files windows is
looking for exactly. What cryteria does it use to pick INF files?

Alternativly I tried to install the Adobe drivers but apparently only the
win2k files were placed on my client so the cupsaddsmb complained about
the other ADOBE* files not being there. I could install an old win98 on
some machine just to get the rest of the those files but it seems like a
lot of work just to make cupsaddsmb happy. I sapose I could manually run
the commands to do the install, but I'm hopeing for a more general
solution. I also tried to unzip the winsteng.exe

Re: [Samba] cupsaddsmb question

2004-08-17 Thread Jim C.
chuckleWell I sure didn't see that in the howtos. Since there is no
specific setting in smb.conf that pertains to this issue, it probably
isn't there in the man pages either. This might explain why you have to
repeat yourself.

I was using share mode rather than user mode because the system in
question is purely experimental. My production system is a PDC with an
LDAP backend.

Anyway, thanks for the tip. I'll try setting the security mode to user
and perhaps I'll set it up to use the ldap backend if need be.

This has got to eb about the 1000th fime I've said this,

There can be a difference, what root password you are using.
One root user with own password can exist in /etc/smbpasswd file
and another in /etc/passwd as true UNIX root.
Its a good security practice to keep those users have different passwords.
For cupsaddsmb you must provide /etc/smbpasswd root password.

True, the /etc/passwd version is a different thing than the samba
account. I tried with the /etc/passwd version first and then when that
did not work I tried adding the root account to samba with
smbpasswd -a
root

So both accounts gave this error.
I'm still trying different things, but right now any help would be
apreciated!
Thanks again,

[Samba] cupsaddsmb

2004-05-21 Thread Kurt Pfeifle
Matteo matteo at ilteo.it
Thu May 20 21:50:34 GMT 2004
HI!
I've a problem with cupsaddsmb!! :-(
You'd surely harvest a more definite answer if you
had spiced the question seed with some version info
about CUPS, Samba and the OS-s you're using...
At the console I type:
cupsaddsmb -U root -v printername
and after some operations complete correctly appear this error:
[...]
Running command: rpcclient localhost -N -U'root%' -c 'adddriver Windows NT
x86
eps6100l:cupsdrv5.dll:eps6100l.ppd:cupsui5.dll:cups5.hlp:NULL:RAW:NULL'
cmd = adddriver Windows NT x86
eps6100l:cupsdrv5.dll:eps6100l.ppd:cupsui5.dll:cups5.hlp:NULL:RAW:NULL
Printer Driver eps6100l successfully installed.
Running command: rpcclient localhost -N -U'root%' -c 'setdriver eps6100l
eps6100l'
cmd = setdriver eps6100l eps6100l
result was NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
This last error is typically showing up if your printer eps61001
is not yet known to Samba. This may happen if you just installed
that printer freshly in CUPS and run cupsaddsmb before doing a
   kill -HUP `pidof smbd`
The most recent Samba version (3.0.4) shouldn't require this any
more. But older versions only learn about these printers which
are available at smbd startup, and don't auto-learn new printers
added during smbd runtime.
Why rpcclient can't associate my shared printer with the successfully
installed printer driver?
Likely because the shared printer doesn't exist from Samba's
point of view...
Check it with
   rpcclient -Uroot%smbpassword -c enumprinters sambahostname
What is the matter?
Any idea?
Thanks!

[Samba] cupsaddsmb: can't authenticate smbpasswd user with ADS security

2004-03-31 Thread ryan . suarez
Greetings Admins,

I have a samba3.0.2 machine with security = ADS. This samba will work with CUPS to
serve print
request to XP clients. I can authenticate the domain users just fine.

I am now trying to copy the printer drivers to the [print$] share by using the
'cupsaddsmb'
command but I am getting an NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE. It cannot find the root user
in the
domain. Of course, a 'root' does not exist in the domain but I have defined it using
smbpasswd.
I need to use root because is the owner of [print$] share.

Can someone please help??

I have included some interesting debugging info below.

thanks,
Ryan

Hi,

I am trying to add automatic driver install, its giving me ADOBEPS5.DLL
file not found error message.
You should read the man page of cupsaddsmb. It would tell you that
the preparation to be completed *before* running the command consists,
amongst other things, to place the Windows driver files into the
/usr/share/cups/drivers/ repository. (Unfortunately the license
prohibits the free re-distribution of the Adobe driver files.)
Where can I get these files?

From any Windows 2K/XP workstation that shares a PostScript printer
It will have a share named print$ where it offeres driver files for
Point'n'Print installations. Try this:
   smbclient -U windowsusername //windowshostname/print\$
   cd w32x86
   cd 2
   mget ADOBEPS*.*
Another option is to go to the Adobe website and search for their
PostScript driver.
Cheers,
Kurt

Samba 3.0.2a with cups.

[Samba] cupsaddsmb with winbind

2003-12-28 Thread Leon Stringer

Question Title: cupsaddsmb with winbind
Author: leonst
Points: 125
Date: 12/19/2003 03:08PM GMT

Hi,

I've just upgraded my Samba server from 2.2.7 to 3.0.1. I was mapping users to
nobody/guest but as this doesn't seem to work I'm using winbind and users are
authenticating to print fine.

The problem is that cupsaddsmb no longer works and I'm assuming the problem is getting
my credentials past winbind when run from the console. I've tried the Samba cupsaddsmb
troubleshooting guide [CUPS-printing.html#id2945506] and I fail at the second step
(with root pw in place of question marks):

rpcclient -Uroot%?? -c 'enumprinters' localhost

Returns:
failed session setup with NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
Cannot connect to server. Error was NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

Does anyone know how I can use accounts to add drivers with winbind (assuming winbind
*is* the problem).

Thanks,

Leon

[Samba] cupsaddsmb / rpcclient problems ...

2003-11-25 Thread Initech
Hi,

I'm having a strange problem with cupsaddsmb ... it fails whenever I
try to use it while using the rpcclient command ... the addriver
command just fails (like below). Does anyone know what is wrong with
the command cupsaddsmb is passing to rpcclient? Adding drivers
through the windows point and print works fine ... this is samba
2.2.8a, Windows PDC. As far as I can tell, what cupsaddsmb is passing
to rpcclient is valid, it just doesn't work (nor does it work manually
using the adddriver command).

[Samba] cupsaddsmb error message

2003-11-04 Thread Ketil Rasmussen
Hi. Im trying to get cups-printing to work on samba 3.0 - RH9. We are
having NT WTS Metaframe servers as the client

But when running command cupsaddsmb -U root -a -v i get the following
error: Warning: No PPD file for printer printername - skipping!

I have copied over theese files to \usr\share\cups\drivers before
running the command
[Windows NT, 2000, and XP]
   cups.hlp
   cupsdrvr.dll
   cupsui.dll

[Windows NT, 2000, and XP]
   ADOBEPS5.DLL
   ADOBEPSU.DLL
   ADOBEPSU.HLP
I have the following cups settings in smb.conf :
[Global]
load printers = yes
printing = cups
printcap name = cups
 [printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
public = Yes
guest ok = Yes
writeable = no
printable = Yes
browseable = no
   printer admin = root
[print$]
comment = Printer Drivers
path = /usr/local/samba/drivers
guest ok = yes
browseable = yes
read only = yes
write list = root
; if this share is configured as read only, then we need
; a 'write list'. Check the file system permissions to make
; sure this account can copy files to the share. If this
; is setup to a non-root account, then it should also exist
; as a 'printer admin'
write list = @ntadmin,root

Any tips on what to look for would have been great...
Thanks

The enumdrivers 3 command is buggy in most
versions of Samba 2.2.x. Just avoid level 3. Use
 plain enumdrivers and enumdrivers 2

 Same result.

Lookup bug #82 in sambas bug tracker.

Sorry, I don't find a bug #82 on http://bugs.samba.org.
I see incoming/21867 which is close but not the same. I'll try to
get the 3.0 branch...

You haven't looked in the right place. Try this:

producing an error, but it fails.

*Where* does it fail? *What* is not working for you?
The drivers seem to be not added properly. The files
are in the right directories, but enumdrivers
returns nothing. Furthermore under windows (W2K
SP4), the files are visible on the properties tab for
print$, but when I try to add the printer, it says
that no driver is adequate on the server.

The enumdrivers 3 command is buggy in most
versions of Samba 2.2.x. Just avoid level 3. Use

Same result.

Lookup bug #82 in sambas bug tracker. The necessary
changes were incorporated in the 3.0 branch but not
yet in 2.2.x. But it should be easy to patch a couple
of lines of source and recompile samba.

I have added this samba server as a member server of CSEENTDOMAIN and
after that when I run cupsaddsmb for automatic driver downloads, I get
above errors. Any suggestions?? How do I remove samba server from a

Also, you have been adviced to upgrade to a recent Samba version.
I'd take that serious -- the printing and printer driver up- and

Hello all,

I am running a Debian testing/unstable system with samba 2.2.3a-6 and
cupsys 1.1.15-4 as a member server in a samba domain.
Hi Brian,

these are rather old versions of CUPS and Samba. Both have seen a lot
of improvements since then -- especially regarding printer driver downloads
to Win clients. I'd suggest you upgrade to Samba-2.2.8 and CUPS-1.1.18 (or
1.1.19 which may be released soon).
I have used CUPS to

I ran cupsaddsmb to add the printer and drivers to samba, but it cannot
find the PPD file... where is it looking for this to be???
root at WS-072:/etc/samba/drivers# cupsaddsmb -a
Warning: No PPD file for printer HP8100N!
root at WS-072:/etc/samba/drivers# cupsaddsmb -v HP8100N
Warning: No PPD file for printer HP8100N!
I have the HP8100N.PPD (generated by CUPS-o-matic)
Oh dear! This is a PostScript printer!! Please -- never, ever use CUPS-O-Matic
PPDs with a PostScript printer! For PS printers use the PPD provided by the
vendor. For the HP8100N you can find it here:
   http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/~checkout~/lpr/ppds/hp/HP_LaserJet_8100_Series.ppd?rev=1.1.1.1content-type=text/plain

CUPS-O-Matic is now deprecated, even for non-PS printers. There is now
the new PPD-O-Matic online generator on the Linuxprinting.org website.
This one creates Adobe-spec compliant PPDs and doesn't require the cruel
Perl hacks inside the PPD. (It also requires the new foomatic-rip
ghostscript-wrapper script to be found here:
  http://www.linuxprinting.org/foomatic2.9/download.cgi?filename=foomatic-ripshow=0

file placed in
/usr/share/cups/drivers, /etc/cups/ppd, /etc/samba/drivers,
/etc/samba/drivers/WIN40, /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86 ...
The PPD should be in /etc/cups/ppd/ and have the same name as your printer.
(This is all taken care of by CUPS itself if you install the printer by one
of the suggested methods: web interface or commandline:
  lpadmin -p hp8100n -v socket://[ip-address-of-hp8100]:9100 -E -P /path/to/downloaded/PPD

Your printer should be better off than now, if set up by this :)

please help if you can, I have many more questions, but I'd like to first
get past this minor one first... where is it looking for the PPD?
It is looking for the PPD in /etc/cups/ppd/[printername].ppd. However, it is
not using file system commands to retrieve it, but it is using IPP calls (so
that it also works across the network).
I'll try to answer a few of your questions in advance, since I am writing up
some docu anyway just now. What follows is copy of the description about the
cupsaddsmb inner workings as I posted to the kdeprint mailing list a few
months ago:

OK, I've now got a copy of all the files in the list, but am having a slight
problemw ith the export bit. In my case I'm running cups samba on an old
P150, and am running KDE on my laptop. Does KDEPrint require that the wizard
and cups/samba servers be running on the same system? If not, where do I put
the files on my laptop so that KDEPrint will find them to export them?

I don't think CUPS server must be running,
No -- cupsd *must* be running too; but not necessarily on the same system. In
the case of the KDE Export Driver Wizard on the laptop, it only needs the
CUPS and Samba client parts of the programs installed. [I bet Michael knows
this, because his KDEPrint Wizards work ;-) but his remarks might not
be understood fully because of their brevity...]
NOTE, that there could be not just 2, but 3 different hosts participating in
the execution of the command(s) [or even 4, if you count the printing Win
clients too]:
* the one where cupsaddsmb is executed (which at least needs CUPS client
  commands and Samba client commands installed);
* the CUPS server with the actual printer (and a Ghostscript or other CUPS
driver) -- specified with -h cupsservername (CUPS server needs *not* Samba
  installed too);
* the Samba server which offers the (PS-) Win driver for download from its
[print$]-share -- specified with -H sambaservername (*this* Samba server
doesn't necessarily require a CUPS installation).
If you don't give -h or -H options it is assumed that everything concerns
localhost only.
 but samba server should be
 running
On the notebook you don't necessarily need a Samba *daemon* running...

as cupsaddsmb (and KDEPrint) uses smbclient and rpcclient
 are used internally.
Before smbclient and rpcclient are doing their work, cupsaddsmb uses IPP
calls to retrieve the real PPD for the printer (from

You don't even need to unzip the file. Just do rpm -ta
 cups-1.18.tar.gz

Wow ... good to know

Sounds really good, but I ran it and got:
error: File not found: /var/tmp/cups-root/etc/pam.d
error: File not found by glob: /var/tmp/cups-root/etc/pam.d/*

With locate pam.d | grep cups I found:
/etc/pam.d/cups
so I did mkdir /var/tmp/cups-root/etc/pam.d; cp -r /etc/pam.d/cups
/var/tmp/cups-root/etc/pam.d

but when I reran rpm -ta cups-1.18.tar.gz it came up with the same error
(I guess it deleted the existing /var/tmp/cups-root)

I'm working on debugging it, but does anyone have tips?

cups-1.1.14-15.2

Please upgrade to CUPS-1.1.18+ to make cupsaddsmb work with Samba-2.2.7a+
Please stick to the settings suggested in man cupsaddsmb, if your own
ideas don't work.

samba-2.2.7-1.7.3

Educate me please ...

I can't... ;-)

man rpcclient shows:
setdriver printername drivername - Execute a SetPrinter() command
to update the printer driver associated with an installed printer.
The printer driver must already be correctly installed on the print
 server.

See also the enumprinters and enumdrivers commands for obtaining a
list of of installed printers and drivers.

This sounds like the printer must already be installed - how is that done if not via
addprinter?

The setdriver command is meant to associate a different driver to a printer.
The members of the driver/printer pair to be chosen must be mapping to the
lists of drivers and printers enumerated by the enumdrivers and enumprinters
commands.

Currently, if I use enumprinters and enumdrivers (without a level setting), I get a
listing of installed drivers and installed printers. If I run setdriver for each of
the printer/driver pairs, will it work?

If you didn't get an error message, it should work.
rpcclient -c enumprinters 2 should list the new driver after the fact.
To get the clients to work with a new driver (if it had one already), you will
have to delete the printer first there (my experience). After that, *you* *will*
*have* *to* *delete* *the* *old* *driver* *too* *!* [To do this fast, right-click
on the *background* of the printers folder, select server properties and
hangle yourself to the tab/menu/dialog (not sure if it is the same in Win NT) to
remove the driver files in question. Only then will the registry entries be
cleansed. If you don't do that, there is the danger, that Windows will re-install
the *old* drivers with your second attempt.]

I just did it but don't have a windows
client to test it against until tomorrow (I'm connected remotely via a ssh terminal)

Please tell us how it works out.

I'm a little nervous about building too many packages from source. I have a
few and I wonder what will happen when I try to upgrade the server to a
newer version of RH (that uses a newer version of glibc)

I've got a feeling that I will have to recompile all of those compiled
packages and I don't know if my users will like to wait while I do that
(we're a small LAN but my users like to have working tools).

IMO sticking to some kind of package management system should help smooth
upgrades ... the problem is that I have to wait for the packages or figure
out how to make them myself

What are your opinions on this strategy?

It's the first hit on google. I've no idea what you're trying to
search for. http://www.google.com/search?q=cups

What are your opinions on this strategy?

If you don't build an up-to-date cups, you won't have a working
cups-based printing system with Samba. Sure, you'll have to be careful
when upgrading, but really. That's a given when you're upgrading,
regardless of whether you built from source or not. It ain't rocket
science.

If you download the cups source and unzip it, you will find a file called cups.spec in the top
level dir of the source. You can pass the spec file to rpm (or rpmbuild on newer redhat systems)
and it will create an rpm for you out of the dowloaded source files.

Makes it easy to have your own compiled app but still get to use package management.

Yes, you may have to recompile after major system library changes, but it is relatively
straightforward.

Good luck. and thanks to the cups maintainers who provide .spec files

cli_pipe: return critical error. Error was SUCCESS - 0

 result was NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL

Does anybody know this problem, and can point me to a solution?

 Thanx in advance.

 Marco

[Samba] cupsaddsmb and samba

2002-11-08 Thread Laurent Hubert
Hello,

I tried to find a way to having the setup of cups printing working for
windows client. I end up now with

cupsaddsmb -v -a -U root finishing by

Printer Driver mesange successfully installed.
Running command: rpcclient localhost -N -U'root%' -c 'setdriver
mesange mesange'
cmd = setdriver mesange mesange
result was NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL

My setup is
Redhat 8.0
Samba 2.2.6-2 (rpm) (recent download)
cups 1.1.15-10 (rpm)

1- Filesharing works ok but not the printer
2- Native linux cups printing works ok
3- For sercurity = domain, even with joined to domain, cupsaddsmb keeps
asking for root (smb) password. In fact, the error is rise with «
rpcclient localhost -N -U root... » while a smbclient -L localhost -U
root will work.

4-For sercurity= server, cupsaddsmb transfert the adobe drivers to
/etc/samba/drivers almost work. But end with

cmd = setdriver mesange mesange
result was NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL

The smb.conf is given above this letter
Any idea? Or there is there a work around to cupsaddsmb for cups
printing wiht samba

Is there a versions of « cups »- « samba »- «redhat or debian »
demonstrated to work.

Thanks for your help
Laurent

[Samba] cupsaddsmb rpcclient error

2002-10-24 Thread Daniel T. Gynn

I am running samba 2.2.6 and cups 1.1.16. I can't get cupsaddsmb to
complete successfully. I'm at an end here, I can't think of anything
else to try after 2 weeks of searching the web. It copies the drivers
to the print$ share directory, however the SetPrinter command fails on
the rpcclient command and it returns with an NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
error. At the SetPrinter failure, it returns an WERR_ACCESS_DENIED, but
I'm not sure what permissions it's looking for or where it wants them
set. I'm attaching the results of rpcclient with debug level 100.
