You could try to #define DEBUG to nothing. But don't expect
anybody to be able to understand log files, there won't be
any anymore :-)

Re: [Samba] how to add unicode support to samba-2.0.6

2006-10-08 Thread jack dang

thanks for all your help, i've devoided #define DEBUGXXX, and disabled more
default options when doing ./configure, in addition to --disable-cups and
--without-ads suggested by jerry.
what's more, I also strip the binary file to make them smaller.
And finally, now the binary size of smbd plus nmbd is nearly 2.3M.
Seems still something could be done to make it far more smaller, right?
I'm working on it.
And, still, your helping hand is what I want.

thank you, jerry, volker, thank you all.

Re: [Samba] how to add unicode support to samba-2.0.6

2006-10-07 Thread jack dang

hi jerry and folks,
sorry to bother you all again and again, and a great many thanks to
your patience to answer my question, though they sometimes may seem to be
too laic and unprofessional.
I got a binary (smbd + nmbd) size that exceeds 40M because I used
samba-3.0.0 rather than samba-3.0.23. And now I got it right under
samba-3.0.23, totally 4.4M around.
However, that seems still a distance away from my destination. I
just want to reduce it (smbd + nmbd) to no more than 2M, and of course, the
less the better.
I'll keep on trying reduceing it, and I would be so appreciated if
anybody can lend me his kindly helping hand.

sincerely,
jack

Sounds like you're doing something wrong in the compile.
For 3.0.23 without any tweaking except --disable-cups

Re: [Samba] how to add unicode support to samba-2.0.6

2006-10-06 Thread jack dang

how did you made it so small?
would you please tell me?
what I did is as follows:

a. enter the right directory, and ./configure without adding any options
b. make
c. make install

I know there must be something we could do to make it smaller during the
./configure period, and make, but I simply do not know, would you specify
what could be done?

A great many thanks to your greate patience.

Re: [Samba] how to add unicode support to samba-2.0.6

2006-09-27 Thread jack dang

it's a pity.
Japanese Version of Samba 2.2.x you mentioned does not support UNICODE
neither,
because in the source code, all the reply functions are based on
single-byte string processing function such as strlen() , it cannot handle
the incoming multibyte strings.

Should I really have to take pains to substitute all the single-byte string
processing functions with mutibyte string processing function, and to do a
ASCII-UNICODE string conversion everytime the server recieves an incoming
packet that contains an ASCII encoded string?

Folks, any ideas of any simple ways?

This is what samba does today.

no, it is probably better for you to try to remove functionality you do
not need in samba3 (samnba4 ?) to reduce the size of the binary than to
try and port an ancient version like 2.0.6 to unicode.

I've thought of that before, but the overall binary size (smbd + nmbd, not
to mention some basic authentication functionality I may need afterwards)is
over 50M, nearly 60M.
Do you think it is poosible to reduce it to a less-than-2M size?
I suppose it may require much more modifications anyhow because samba3 is
far more complicated than samba2, and I have to figure out the functionality
of every single component and the annoyingly complicated inter-connection
and interdependency among them to make an effective modification.
well, that's my point of view, and if you have any further advice, would you
take patience to tell me?

Why on earth would you try that? One of the main points of
