I tried to install SAMBA 2.0.6 before, but I could not install. Because, I got the install error during the frontport installation. Yes, I never tested the Frontport library on OpenVMS 5.5-2. I had a job change, and a move, and it has taken me until this year to get things set back up. The changes to make Frontport work on the earlier versions are not hard, and I intend to take them into account when I put out the next release of it. I am currently debugging the privileged UID routines. If you care to recompile the source, I would be happy to assist on this list with the needed patches and transfer vector entries. After this I decided to use 1.9.17p4, so I can sucessfuly install it. You might try the 2.0.3 release, it still requires plain text passwords. You may be able to apply the 2.0.7 source patches to it and get around the protocol problems. I will install it. Please let me know the location of kit. I have never find the SAMBA 2.0.7 kit so. I never released a 2.0.7 kit. I did publish a list of the steps needed to do the upgrades to 2.0.10 of SAMBA, but at the time I did not have enough of a computing environment up at home to test it. Once I get Frontport passing my tests, I will probably build a 2.0.10 kit just for completeness. I have had multiple hard disk failures as a result of my relocation, plus I am spending almost an hour a day commuting, so I do not have as much time as I use to. On the other hand, I now have very good access to OpenVMS internals and futures :-) -John [EMAIL PROTECTED] Personal Opinion Only PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT ETIQUETTE MESSAGE BEFORE POSTING: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

My windows cliant is Windows 2000. As I pointed out in my previous message, for that to work, you really need SAMBA 2.0.7 to work, even for the UNIX versions of SAMBA. Otherwise you will have no communications or intermittant communication problems. This is a protocol negotiation error that was fixed in SAMBA 2.0.7. I have no luck to accessing VAX directory from Windows 2000. Please give me some suggetion. Encypted passwords must be disabled in the client, otherwise look at my previous message that was posted to the list just before yours came out. Some people have been able to get Windows 2000 and early SAMBA to work. The bug in the protocol incompatablility seems to hit some people and not others. I assume that there is somehow I can see the directory from Windows 2000. When I see the error log from LOG.SMB;1, I got the message below. Anybody knows how to fix the problem. ** vms_file: no filespec available ** vms_stat: st = -1, mode = 001402 size = 1476395086 Can you do the steps in diagnostic.txt to make sure that you can connect locally? On my post that immediately preceded yours, I reference a FAQ that I wrote that should give you many other tips. -John [EMAIL PROTECTED] Personal Opinion Only PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT ETIQUETTE MESSAGE BEFORE POSTING: http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

setting up SAMBA 1.9.17p4
Hello, I am try to setting up SAMBA 1.9.17p4. My windows cliant is Windows 2000. It seems that smbd and nmbd are working. (I did the diagnosis test.) I try to access from Windows 2000 to ** vms_file: no filespec available. Every time, I access to the SAMBA server, I got the erro message that the account does not have permission to login from this wrok station. So I check the log.smb, and find that "** vms_file: no filespec available" I do not really understand the message. So far, I do not care about security at this moment. I do not want to stop encrypt windows password. I just want to access the directory (VAX) from windows2000. Please let me know how to set up, smb.conf. Please give me some advice. workgroup = workgroup interfaces = ***.**.***.* netbios name = netbios security = server password server = password browseable = yes writable = yes guest only = yes wins support = yes wins server = ***.**.***.* wins proxy = yes encrypt passwords = yes force user = user thansk,

Please give me some advice. There is a SAMBA 2.2.x release. I do not know if it is available for VAX. http://www.pi-net.dyndns.org/anonymous/jyc/ If you search the VMS conference on http://encompasserve.org for the SAMBA for OpenVMS FAQ, it should bring up a list of things for you to check. It has not been updated for the 2.2.x release to my knowledge. -John [EMAIL PROTECTED] Personal Opinion Only
