The main point where we are falling down is that I was not clear enough on
the importance of being strong on the command line (unix). We made it a
requirement to be able to script and to have unix experience but no one we
talked to could complete a simple task on the command line (like read a
file and for each entry do something, or how do you apply an update/install
from the commandline, or transfer a file to/from a host using the command
line) . Most of our work (~80%) is command line based. The way we are doing
this for the in person interviews is by literally handing someone a laptop
and giving them 30 minutes to complete a simple task. Again, no one is able
to do it.
Since eBay is committed to training anyway, eagerness/willingness to learn
is more important than decades of experience.

• Strong ‘hands on’ experience developing software tests for functional,
performance, and regression testing that include automated, ad-hoc, and
manual testing elements
• 6+ years’ experience with focus on Automation Testing using automation
tools to include Java code integration
• 6+ years’ experience in Requirements Analysis, Functional, and
Regression, testing
• 6+ years developing automated scripts where web services are utilized and
test data may be mocked to accelerate testing cycles
• Good understanding of QA methodology – test plans, test cycles, and
software releases
• Experienced with defect management and tracking tools
• Excellent written and verbal communication and teamwork skills
