with the footnotes 13-36 on page 321 for a-e above...

2) In Modern Chess Openings 14th Edition on page 245 the Old Main line
is 9 O-O-O Nbd7 continued with the alternatives

a) 10 g4 b5 11 Bxf6 Nxf6 12 g5 Nd7 13 f5 Nc5?! 14 f6 gxf6 15 gxf6 Bf8

Re: [Scid-users] Scid 3.6.24 RC1 Connect Hardware feedback...

2008-06-01 Thread Hans Eriksson
Hello all,

As to feedback on Scid 3.6.24 rc1 I have this...

I noticed that the Connect hardware icon to the right of
the Turn the side-to-move icon on or off had NO
hinttext displayed when the mouse pointer (arrow) was
placed above it id est that it should have an hinttext displayed
when the mouse pointer is placed above it
like for example Connect hardware and that I
saw a few error messages when I tested this feature...

It should be noted before writing this that I had NO hardware
there to connect so some of the error messages might not be
errors in this feature...

1) Click on the Connect hardware icon with a red backwardslash
(a red \ above the white and darkgrey icon):

So in short Connect Hardware seems to have problems
with missing hinttext for Connect hardware,
no Info selected in Input Engine Console,
font moveFont id est Helvetica,
invalid command name .inputengineconsole.console
when I tested it in Windows 98SE...

[Scid-users] Wish for Scid to support 9 chess engines for Analysis in the Tools-menu...

2008-05-03 Thread Hans Eriksson
Hello all,

It would be nice if Scid would support more than two
analysis engines in the Tools-menu...

Arena 1.99 beta 5 supports 3 chess engines (http://www.playwitharena.com),
Fritz 8 etc. can easily display 4 chess engines,
ChessGUI 00.88 (http://www.w2410tmq9.homepage.t-online.de/) can handle
at least 3 chess engines,,, etc.,
so it would be nice if Scid would support 9 chess engines instead of
two to easily see how different the evaluation of a chess position can be...

Best wishes,
Hans Eriksson

[Scid-users] Polyglot and SCID, PolyGlot 1.4 X 070325 and Cygwin1.dll 1.5.25-4 ...

2008-05-03 Thread Hans Eriksson
Hello all,

Just a short reply to this:

Pascal,

The only comment I can make is this: Rybka with polyglot under SCID
gives EXACTLY the same analysis results as Rybka under Chessbase GUIs.
How can that be wrong in some way? I agree that many times, Rybka
under SCID (without Polyglot) finds strong moves sooner than under
Chessbase, but the fact is, we need to see that Polyglot / Rybka in
combination gives the same result as Chessbase / Rybka and that is, for
most of the computer chess population, the definitive reference platform.

Thanks for your efforts with this investigation!

Roy

There are a few different versions of PolyGlot:

1) Polyglot 1.4

http://wbec-ridderkerk.nl/html/download.htm

2) PolyGlot 1.4 X 070325

http://www.weidchess.com/downloads/

where in 2) you can find a link to this:

3) PolyGlot 1.4 X 070325 ReadMe

http://www.weidchess.com/downloads/polyglot/polyglot_x_070325.html

Obviously PolyGlot 1.4 X 070325 is better than Polyglot 1.4 ...

But then you will have to use an updated cygwin1.dll file
to get a boost and a stability increasement over version 1.5.24-2
that is uncompatible with Windows MCE,Windows Vista,Windows 2003,
Windows 2008,,, etc. like you can see hinted here:

4) Updated: cygwin-1.5.25-5

http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-announce/2007-12/msg00023.html

5) Updated: cygwin-1.5.25-7

http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-announce/2007-12/msg00036.html

6) Updated: cygwin-1.5.25-11

http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-announce/2008-03/msg00031.html

As I wrote for example here:

7) On Cygwin1.dll versions performance...

http://f22.parsimony.net/forum41668/messages/47079.htm

and here:

8) Cygwin1.dll 1.5.25-4 and Cygwin1.dll 1.5.25-7 ...

http://f22.parsimony.net/forum41668/messages/45940.htm

so as a brief summary Cygwin1.dll 1.5.25-4 or Cygwin1.dll 1.5.25-7
are both about 10% faster than Cygwin1.dll 1.5.24-2
(Cygwin1.dll 1.5.25-4 is much faster than the other versions and Cygwin1.dll
1.5.25-11 is unbelievable slow id est you will have to check out its
performance
to believe that it can be that slow...) and they are much better to use with
versions of Windows later than Windows 98 SE id est that they will NOT work
as they should with Cygwin1.dll 1.5.24-2 so I would suggest that Cygwin1.dll
1.5.25-4 is used instead of Cygwin1.dll 1.5.24-2 ...

Best wishes,
Hans Eriksson
