*Thai woman tells of 25-year detour after catching wrong bus*

by Rapee Mama Thu Feb 8, 2:55 AM ET

DUSONGYO, Thailand (AFP) - A Thai mother who was lost for 25 years after
catching the wrong bus home has spoken of her ordeal after being
reunited with her family thanks to simple song.

The last time Jaeyaena Beuraheng saw her seven children was in 1982 when
she left south Thailand on one of her regular shopping trips across the
border to nearby Malaysia.

She never returned, and police later told her family that she had
apparently been killed in a traffic accident.

In fact, Jaeyaena had simply taken the wrong bus home -- an error that
would have been easy to fix except that she only speaks the local
dialect of Malay known as Yawi, according to officials at the homeless
shelter where the 76-year-old has lived for two decades.

"I didn't tell anybody where I was going on that day, because I went
there quite often," she told AFP, crying as she spoke.

She was heading home from her shopping trip when she mistakenly hopped
on a bus to Bangkok, some 1,150 kilometers (700 miles) north of her home
in Narathiwat province.

In Bangkok, unable to read Thai and speaking a language few Thais can
understand, she again took a wrong bus, this time to Chiang Mai, another
700 kilometers (430 miles) further north.

There she ended up as a beggar for five years, until she was sent to a
homeless shelter in the central Thai province of Phitsanulok in 1987.

"I thought I would die in Phitsanulok. I thought about running away many
times, but then I worried I would not be able to make it home. I really
missed my children," Jaeyaena said.

Officials at the shelter told AFP that she was known as "Auntie Mon,"
because her speech sounded similar to the language of ethnic Mon living
along the border with Myanmar.

But still no one could understand her, until last week when three health
students from Narathiwat arrived on an exchange program to research the
problem of homelessness at the shelter.

She sang a song for the visitors, one that the staff at the shelter had
often heard but did not understand.

"She sang her same old song, one that nobody could understand until
those three students from Narathiwat told us that she was sing in Yawi,
a Malay dialect," the official said.

"So we asked them to talk to her and find out if she had relatives,"
official said.

Jaeyaena told the students that she had a Malaysian husband and seven
children, recounting her entire story of the bus and how she had become
lost in northern Thailand.

Her shocked family sent her youngest son and her eldest daughter to meet
her and bring her home on Tuesday, the official said.

"She remembered all of her children's names. But at first she couldn't
recognise her youngest son, but she recognised her eldest daughter,"
said the official, who was at their reunion.

Her children took her back to their family home in Dusongyo village, in
a remote corner of Narathiwat, where her children and grandchildren were
still hugging and kissing her two days after her return.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Where is everybody??

2007-02-09 Thread Tracey de Morsella (formerly Tracey L. Minor)
It rains all the time here, in Xalapa. I'm told that the weather has
changed dramatically because of global warming and it was not like this
a few years ago. Mold is everywhere. As soon as our money comes in
from new contract we just signed and I'm strong enough, I out of here.
I read that it is prevalent in new Orleans too.
we were supposed to move in November for my birthday, but I could barely
stand for more that 20 minutes. I probably ate some fruit. We went
native. Our friends took us to some of there favorite places (hole in
the walls in my opinion)

I think probably 100%. no organ damage. I'm on a treatment that is
not legal in the states, and is only available from a Dr. here and one
in Cuba. While it has been approved by the world health organization, I
do not think it will ever be approved by the FDA. I read that certain
drugs that i can get here or in Europe, you can not get in the States
because the approval process is too cost prohibited. i even read that
some drugs that can treat really serious illnesses are approved for more
common less serious illnesses, but not for the serious illness because
of cost. The protocol used in the states is only antibiotics. My doctor
has me on the antibiotic, an immune system builder for people with
immune deficiencies, and a vaccine. I think if I was not on on
immune build or the vaccine, the fatal symptoms would not have
disappeared so fast and there might have been damage. Before I was
diagnosed and my symptoms really appeared, I thought I had another
parasite. i would spend hours researching. unfortunately, non of the
information I have read on Leptospirosis in English fits my symptoms.
However, in Spanish, I have found more documents where the symptoms
match mine. I think most of the research is being done here and in
Cuba. After my first wrong diagnosis of Lupus and discovering these
parasites that mimicked lupus, I started overdosing on herbs that
repair and clear out the liver as well as kill parasites, I also drank
clay and did digestive cleanses, so my liver pain was for a very short
period. When it was the worse, all I ate was raw veggies, apple cider
vinegar dressing, ginger tea, and lots of filtered water. i had
contacted someone with real severe lupus who was able to rid himself of
all his symptoms by going totally raw veggies. Since I hated eating
anyway, I decided to try it.

I think all of that protected me. The only permanent affect is that I
do not think I'm going to have a second baby. I can, but this has been
so excruciatingly painful, I can't face the pain of another difficult
pregnancy or three day labor. I need a break from pain for a while.
And while the worse it over, I'm still not yet really physically
comfortable. My girlfriend a had a baby a year after this doctor
treated her, but I think I have a more severe case than most. Other
than a doctor who went into a coma, I do not know about a lot of
correctly diagnosed cases as severe as mine-- at least they are not
recorded online in English.

I don't have a book but there are a a lot of medical sites on th web. I
spent hours on them. While I am sure he would not care now that I am
better, I promised my husband I would not visit them for a while,
because back before I was diagnosed, I would find illnesses that I had
all the symptoms of that would say that i was likely to die. Since
stress triggers symptoms, I had to stop obsessing on the medical web
sites. I do still use on natural healing web site to deal with my
symptoms.

What I do have are protocols for three categories of parasites that i
put together while I was sick real sick. My daughter never got sick,
but now i want to protect her and us from any other illnesses. So I
keep a list of things that kill parasites coming in and also ones that
kill them once they are in your body. right now, I drink apple cider
vinegar everyday as a prevention. i give my daughter bee propolis as a
prevention. Once things settle down a little, I'm going to take some
additional measures. My mother went to Acapulco a few months go and i
gave her a list of stuff i want her to take a week before, during and
after the trip she did ok. an associate of mine likes traveling around
Asia and a few months ago he was eating raw pork and blood dish in some
village he visited, so I'm putting together a protocols for him

Well, for the record, Phyllis is the same way: she hates calling only when
things go wrong. But you can reach out any time, good or bad, rain or shine.
Thank God you're okay, what's the overall prognosis for when you're going to be
completely healed, specifically the organ damage? From what I read, it causes
jaundice among other things, which of course really hits the liver. I also
see it's common in freshwater areas, tropical and floodplain areas especially.
Where do you think you caught it? Possibly some fresh veggies that had been
contaminated?

Do you have a book, computer program, or bookmarked website of infectious
diseases?

Re: [scifinoir2] Bridges Steeled For Iron Man

2007-02-09 Thread KeithBJohnson
I've been buying the Annihilation series and its ancillary titles. I enjoyed
the limited series on Ronin and the Super Skrull. It's not that I dislike it,
it just hasn't captivated me the way Civil War has. I'm really liking the
whole battle between the forces of Cap and Iron Man, the stupid move Peter
Parker made of revealing his secret identity, the questionable move the
government's making of indoctrinating super-villains, etc. A lot of what's
being said and discussed is so relevant to our world--and not just the current
administration and its dictatorial policies. I keep asking myself whose side
would I be on? The heart and soul say I'd fight registration as implemented
because it's too draconian and limiting on civil liberties. My brain tells me
that in a world where owning a gun or a car requires licensing, it's ridiculous
for people who can shoot laser from their eyes or literally control the weather
*not* to be licensed, trained, sanctioned, and held responsible.

I'm enjoying Civil War immensely. I think I'm gonna put it in the same august
company as some of the great megaseries and events of all time, such as the
death and rebirth of Superman, Onslaught and Heroes Reborn, Secret Wars, and
Crisis on Infinite Earths.

-- Original message --

It's the writing. Keith GIffen, most famed for his comic take on "Justice
League" back in the 80s, handled the entire series, including all of the
offshoots with Super Skrull, Silver Surfer, Ronan the Accuser and Nova. I like
the cosmic-scoped stories, and this more than qualifies for me. While all of
Earth's heroes are knotted up in CIvil War, a bunch of ragtag forces are trying
to hold back Annihilus and his hordes, because Annihilus decided that he wants
to be Galactus. (Oh, did I fail to mention that, in Issue #1, both Big G and
the Surfer were put on ice? Think about it.)

Nope. Not even. After three issues, I didn't like the flow f it. At about the
same time, I picked up "Annihilation", running almost parallel to "Civil War".
And it's *much better*, IMO.

Bizarre Marin cab ride prompts charge of racial discrimination

(02-07) 14:12 PST San Rafael, Calif. (AP) --

A black restaurant manager filed a racial discrimination claim against a
cab company after a white taxi driver allegedly locked him in his cab and
drove him to jail because he thought he was a fare scofflaw.

Lawyers for Michael Orange, 29, filed the complaint against Marin Yellow
Cab on Tuesday with the state's Department of Fair Employment and Housing,
which investigates discrimination complaints.

Orange said he hailed the cab outside a San Rafael bus station in June and
asked to be taken home. Instead, the cab driver locked the doors, made a
quick U-turn and headed in the opposite direction.

"I'm locked in the car — he's not telling me what's going" on,
Orange said. "This isn't just some drive like 'Driving Miss Daisy.' This
guy is really whipping me around."

The driver pulled up in front of the Marin County Jail and told Orange he
"fit the profile" of a man who had skipped out on earlier fares. He told
Orange he could either pay the fare in advance or talk to sheriff's
deputies, the driver told him.

Marin Yellow Cab declined to comment Wednesday.

After Orange insisted several times, the driver called his dispatcher, who
verified that Orange was a good customer and could be taken home. The cab
driver did not apologize but told Orange he could have the ride for free
if he stayed quiet about the incident.

   Orange paid him $20.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Where is everybody??

2007-02-09 Thread Tracey de Morsella (formerly Tracey L. Minor)
I planned on telling you but it snuck up on me and how do you bring that up.

By the time I realized I was dying, I had no energy to reach out to
people. The symptoms that I noticed could be a whole lot of common
illnesses. I got here and got the stomach virus a lot people get when
they come to Mexico. Then I got the same nasty cold that put your back
out in Atlanta two falls ago. Thereafter, about every three weeks I got
a cold . A month later acne and migraines every once in a while. I was
depressed and moody but who wouldn't be if they were sick loosing money
and it was cold and rainy in so called sunny Mexico. The only reason I
know approximately when we caught it is by one of my husbands symptoms.
extremely painful and dry eyes. He got them a few weeks after we got
here. Both me and my husband were diagnosed with leptospirosis, but I
got much sicker then he did.

I did not get sick beyond the colds, migraines, acne and moodiness until
August. I got a little better and then in October over a three week
period, I lost my hair, my finger nails, nausea, hearing, got dizzy,
tumors, lost the feeling on my right side, chest pains, liver pain
difficulty breathing, my right hand turned blue, had tremors, and a lot
more. They diagnosed me with lupus and I was about to take the
treatment, and then this friend of mine who used to be a
anthropologist. They catch everything. He insisted I had a parasite
called Leptospiros and that it mimics Lupus. he harassed me everyday,
until I agreed to talk to the immune system specialist. Any way I have
it. If you are diagnosed right, it does not kills you. luckily, I have
the number one doctor in the world for it. I was able to walk and
leave the house thirty minutes after my first shot.

I did not say anything , because at first I did not know I was sick, and
then I was afraid I was going to die. It was extremely consumed it was
extremely painful. since pain medicine suppresses your immune systems so
I was not very social. I just started feeling better a few weeks ago.
you may have noticed I've been posting a lot more. How do you bring up
something so bizarre. i think the Astronaut, Wookie, Anna Nicole,
gabor stories gave me the strength to come out with my bizarre. Just
kidding. I'm sorry, we had stopped talking and I do not like to call
people just when things are going bad

So to be even more bizarre, I'm probably going to stay in Mexico for two
more years, but we re leaving Xalapa AKA Seattle South.

I have no interest in films that make fun of overweight black woman

includes 2 films by Martin Lawrence (Big Mama's house or something
titled like that), and the stage play/film by the other black guy
who's name I can't remember. A trend of poor taste. There's so much
else that's funny and funnier.

BTW, the tv series 'Ugly Betty' is really good. It has much more

Re: [scifinoir2] Bridges Steeled For Iron Man

2007-02-09 Thread Martin

The Yokozuna Of Soul <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: no way. You haven't been

Almost as bad as Woody Allen sexing that young girl. I take that back: it's

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Where is everybody??

2007-02-09 Thread Tracey de Morsella (formerly Tracey L. Minor)
I did a lot of research on Costa Rica as well as we have a friend that
just returned after a three year stay. Despite my problems, I think
Mexico is better for what you want to do. I keep hearing that they are
not that friendly to you if you are not a native of Costa Rica. Also it
can be more expensive than Mexico. They are several popular locations
for immersion in Mexico. We live in one of them. It is not my
favorite. We are moving to one of my favorites.

*Cuernavaca - easy to get to by plane and cheap as low as $260 - $260
1-1/2 to 4 hours by plane to most places in the states. If I had not
been too weak, we would have moved there in November. Since I'm getting
better we are moving there in May. lots of fun, people from all over
the world seem to live there. The riches area of Mexico so you see less
poor than most place. Seems to be active music, arts, ecological, and
science movements, lots to do there, near pyramids, not real dry, not
real wet. I really enjoyed myself when i visited and I was sick.
*Guanajuato - My friends says its extremely beautiful, very cool in the
winter (snow), not many expatriates, low crime
*Oxaca - Was one of the best places to live in Mexico. all bets are off
now. Stay away. Last years teacher's strike turned deadly in the
fall. the governor's troops are still disappearing teachers and
recently killed a foreign reporter who took pictures.
*Xalapa - the city is ugly, no to low crime, People are super friendly,
kind of young. It is a college town. Its also kind of provincial with
large pockets of very progressive people. Big music town too. area is
gorgeous, there are about 4 micro-eco-systems here. I'm in a cloud
forest in the mountains, but thirty minutes away is tropical, about
every twenty minutes you run into a different type of fruit that is grown
*Morellia - Very beautiful, but conservative
*San Miguel de Allendez - extremely beautiful, very expensive. Many
Americans have moved there. Big Artist haven. I hope to visit in the
fall as it is not that far from where I am moving

Let me decide if you guys decide to check it out. If we are still here,
we will help.

Funny, I love Civil War and the news -type "Frontline" series that runs with
it. Annihilation is interesting, but I'm not in love with it.

Nope. Not even. After three issues, I didn't like the flow f it. At about the
same time, I picked up "Annihilation", running almost parallel to "Civil War".
And it's *much better*, IMO.

Zsa Zsa's husband: I might be baby's dad

By NOAKI SCHWARTZ, Associated Press Writer 14 minutes ago

The husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor said Friday that he had a
decade-long affair with Anna Nicole Smith and may be her infant
daughter's father.

The claim by Prince Frederick von Anhalt comes amid a paternity suit
over Smith's 5-month-old daughter, Dannielynn. The birth certificate
lists Dannielynn's father as attorney Howard K. Stern, but former
Smith boyfriend Larry Birkhead is waging a legal challenge, saying he
is the father.

"If you go back from September, she wasn't with one of those guys, she
was with me," von Anhalt told The Associated Press in an interview
Friday.

He said he would file a lawsuit if Dannielynn is turned over to Stern
or Birkhead.

Von Anhalt, 59, and Gabor, 90, have been married for more than 20 years.

Gabor, a onetime sex symbol and star of such 1950s films as "Moulin
Rouge" and "Queen of Outer Space," has been in declining health in
recent years and suffered a stroke in 2005. She was partially
paralyzed in a car crash in 2002.

Von Anhalt, who is Gabor's eighth husband, said he and Smith first met
in the 1990s when Smith was still married to elderly oil tycoon J.
Howard Marshall II. He said Smith approached him and Gabor at the
Plaza Hotel in New York.

"She was a very big fan of Zsa Zsa and wanted to be like Zsa Zsa," he
said. "She wanted to be a princess."

He said the two started an affair soon after, meeting over the years
in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. For much of that time, he
said, Smith urged him to make her a princess like his wife.

But short of divorcing the actress, he said the only solution would
have been adopting Smith. Von Anhalt said he did consider that and
even filled out adoption papers, but Gabor refused to sign them.

That was something I never attributed to Sisters back when I was growing up.

*What Went Wrong With the Easy-Bake Oven *
/After a technology upgrade, the popular children’s oven is being
recalled over safety concerns./
WEB EXCLUSIVE
By Jennifer Ordoñez
Newsweek
Updated: 3:57 p.m. CT Feb 7, 2007

Feb. 7, 2007 - It was the kind of tribute befitting only the most
industrious of workhorses. After 43 years and more than 100 million
miniature cakes baked by the warmth of a single 100-watt light bulb, the
Easy-Bake Oven finally got its due last November when it earned a spot
in the National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, N.Y. There, it would
share the company of a small but formidable toy box of legends. Slinky
and marbles. Play-Doh and LEGOs. Crayons. "It's safe, it works and the
best part is that the play makes its own reward," museum curator
Patricia Hogan gushed at the time to the Associated Press. Hogan may
have spoken too soon.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission partnered with
the Pawtucket, R.I.-based toymaker Hasbro to recall 985,000 Easy-Bake
Ovens for repair after receiving as many as 29 reports of children being
injured while baking with them. Some got their fingers and hands caught
in the oven's opening. Others were burned as a result. The five children
reported burned were "significantly younger than 8-years-old," the
minimum age recommended to use the Easy-Bake, says Hasbro spokesperson
Gail Carvelli. "They were like 3, 4 and 5 years old."

In a news alert, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission instructed
guardians to "immediately take the recalled oven away from children
under 8 years of age and contact the firm (at 1-800-601-8418) for a
retrofit," adding that "young children can insert their hands into the
oven’s opening and get their hands or fingers caught, posing an
entrapment and burn hazard." The recall applies only to ovens purchased
since May 2006, Hasbro says.

Still, that's significant. Julie Vallese, senior spokesperson for the
CPSC, says that while not unheard of, "the majority of our recalls don't
come close to this volume." In 2005, there were 20 toy-related deaths
involving children under 15 in the United States, Vallese says. At least
one lawsuit stemming from the current Easy-Bake malfunctions has been
filed, Vallese says. Hasbro says it does not comment on pending
litigation. Hasbro spokesperson Carvelli says all Hasbro products
undergo "rigorous testing" before they are launched and that all "meet
or exceed" government safety specifications. There has never before been
a recall of the Easy-Bake Oven, Carvelli says.

So what changed in May 2006? Call it an extreme makeover gone bad. After
several incarnations of the one-light-bulb oven over the last four
decades, last year Hasbro introduced a new, higher tech version that
replaced the bulb with a low-temperature heating system. If making a
delicious minicake with a light bulb was easy as pie, this would be even
easier, baking up "some of the tastiest cakes and cookies to date," the
company touted in a press release. Although classic mixes like Devil's
Food Cake were still available, Hasbro updated its line of goodies,
including mixes featuring the likes of My Little Pony and SpongeBob
SquarePants.

Adults have even gotten into the oven, which in its latest incarnation
features a front-loading door and four burners, in purple and pink
tones. In a cookbook called "The Easy-Bake Gourmet," nostalgic celebrity
chefs indulged retro-sophistication, contributing Easy-Bake-compatible
recipes like Deep Dish-Truffle Lobster Pie and Warm Kumquat-and-Date
Sticky Toffee Pudding. "Easy-Bake really is a rite of passage," says
Hasbro's Carvelli, noting that all ovens have been pulled from stores
and will not be available again until the company investigates—and
remedies—the current problems. "It's all about that first experience of
baking on your own. As a kid, it's one step towards independence."

Carol Kindler of Los Angeles remembers that feeling. The 38-year-old
mother of two remembers the first Devil's Food cake she made when she
got an Easy-Bake Oven, one of the more than 23 million sold to date, for
her 9th birthday. "I couldn't wait, and it came out too soft. So I ate
that one and told my mom I had to make another. And I didn't share any
with my brother." Her 10 year-old daughter Hailey got one for Chanukah
last year, and hasn't suffered any injuries "beyond, maybe, sugar
shock," Kindler jokes. But before Hailey mixes up one more treat, the
oven will have to be retrofitted with the new safety door that Hasbro
says

2007-02-09 Thread g123curious
Oscar has nothing to do with it. Period.

I have no interest in films that make fun of overweight black woman
or overweight women. This includes Murphy's latest film, but also
includes 2 films by Martin Lawrence (Big Mama's house or something
titled like that), and the stage play/film by the other black guy
who's name I can't remember. A trend of poor taste. There's so much
else that's funny and funnier.

BTW, the tv series 'Ugly Betty' is really good. It has much more
positive messages in it, for people of all backgrounds.

an interesting convalescence.

A few weeks ago, my husband, my brother in law and my daughter explored
some ruins and then when to the beach. I hope to go back there and to
the hot springs before we move out of this area. My husband also went
exploring on the 5th tallest mountain in North American a few weeks
ago. Right now I live in the mountains so it is always cold and rainy.
however, it is about to get real hot for the remaining months I'm at
this location. My illness almost destroyed our company, but now things
are picking up a lot. As soon as I'm better we are moving to Cuernvaca
to finnaly set up our office. However, don't hold me too that,
sometimes we really want to live on the Yucatan by the beach.
Unfortunately, that not the best place to do business. But i really
love the location we plan to move to. Business of all the things
happening with the business we plan on staying another two years to get
things set up and then either come back to the States, or check out
Barcelona. We have relative there and I won't have to start all over
with a new lnguage. Who knows? Right now, I'm just focusing on getting
better and adapting to this business growth.

Tell your wife you hve scifinoir obligations.

[scifinoir2] Re: COMMENTARY: Can 'Wonder Woman' succeed purely as action hero?

2007-02-09 Thread B. Smith
American female action/superhero movies have sucked but they are
quite successful in Asia. If they do an American Wonder Woman with
the verve and energy of something like The Heroic Trio it could be a
hit.

I know it goes against the grain but I think the new treatment of
Wonder Woman may be the way to go. Make it a kicka$$ action film but
flesh Diana's character out. As someone else said, set it in an
alternate WWII with all sorts of uber retrofuturist Nazi-tech, big
action setpieces and the like and you'll have a hit.

2007-02-09 Thread Martin
Tracey, I don't like the term because, in my mind, it connotates a fan who has
fgleefully shoved aside the boundary between fantasy and reality with regard to
the genre. Best example I can write at this moment- about seven years ago, I
was at a bookstore at Lenox Square in Atlanta, browsing trough the SF section,
when I heard someone bellow, "Ka'PLACH!" I looked up (well, *jumped* is the
accurate term), expecting to see smething out of DragonCOm, unwashed, unshaven
and unaware of his embarassing state of mind. Instead, I find two men, one
Black, one White, both in expensive suits and ties, well-groomed, speaking
Klingonese. That's just beyond the ken for me. I admit to a bit of excitement
at some shows, such as Doctor Who and Stargate Atlantis, but I'm not at the
point where I'm going to start peppering my conversations with references to
the Wraith or Nestenes. Compartmentalize, fanboys! Please! Some of those
"normal" folk out there are watching. And they're the ones with
the keys to the mental-health facilities.

Georgia Mayor Changes Name, Converts to Islam

Macon, GA (WMAZ-TV) - Mayor C. Jack Ellis, a practicing Christian throughout
his life, on Thursday said he's switched to the Islamic faith.
The mayor said the conversion also means he'll be going through the legal
process of changing his name. His new name will be Hakim Mansour Ellis. The
mayor said he kept his last name to maintain family ties.

"It's a personal decision, a private decision as to how one worships. But I do
understand that I'm not a private person," Ellis said. "But being the mayor of
the city, I think people have a right to know what I believe in, that I am a
man of faith, and the faith I'm now a part of is the faith of Islam."
He now calls himself a Sunni Muslim. He made the switch, Ellis said, during his
December trip to Africa. Rather than call it a switch, Ellis said it was like
returning home.

"I went back to my roots I guess you could say," Ellis said. "I did convert to
Islam in December of this past year in the country of Senegal. When I say,
"back to my roots", Islam was in Senegal prior to the Africans being brought
here as slaves."

Since converting, Ellis said he attends the Islamic Center on Bloomfield Road
during Friday worship services. He also said he's practicing the Islam doctrine
of praying five times each day. Ellis said he discussed his decision with his
family and siblings before making it public.

"Now, I'm sharing with my broader family, the Macon community who supported me
when I was a Christian and trust that they will now," Ellis said. "I'm the same
person even though I'll be changing my name."

Even though he switched religions, the mayor said he isn't ranking them.

"I'm not saying that one is better than the other," Ellis said. "We do believe
that the prophet Mohammed was the last prophet as well as we believe Moses was
a prophet."

Prior to the conversion, Ellis said he attended Unionville Baptist Church on
Houston Avenue and before that Harvest Cathedral on Rocky Creek Road.
The mayor completes his second consecutive four-year term in December and isn't
eligible for re-election. But Ellis said he might run for Georgia's 8th
District congressional seat in 2008. Steve Allen, chair of the Bibb County
Democratic Party, said a person's faith is his or her personal choice. But
because most of the 8th District is Christian and conservative, Allen said the
mayor might have a more difficult time winning the 8th District. Ellis said he
hopes people respect his decision and will call him by his new name.

Is this what a future Oscar winner looks like?

Some fear 'Norbit' could hurt Murphy's Academy Award chances.
By Greg Braxton and Robert W. Welkos
Times Staff Writers

February 8, 2007

EDDIE Murphy's on the verge of an awards season trifecta — his
charismatic portrayal of a tragic R&B singer in "Dreamgirls" has
already nabbed him a Screen Actors Guild award and a Golden Globe, and
he's considered a front-runner for a best supporting Oscar.

But the most high-profile image of Murphy these days — while Oscar
ballots are still out — is on billboards and in movie trailers wearing
a fat suit, garish eye shadow and little else.

The tagline for his new comedy, "Norbit," poses the question: "Have you
ever made a really big mistake?"

Some Oscar observers are questioning the timing of the movie's Friday
arrival, and whether it may unintentionally put off potential academy
voters, while some black activists are taking Murphy to task for
engaging in what they say are demeaning racial stereotypes.

"Every time I pass that billboard, it makes me sick," said one veteran
Oscar consultant, who declined to be identified and is not involved in
a rival campaign. "I think his performance in 'Dreamgirls' is so
fabulous" and deserves to win the Academy Award. But, he added,
Murphy's latest comedy offering "doesn't help."

Award season aside, Murphy and "Norbit" are under fire from some black
activists who say the film is just the latest to build a movie around a
black man dressing up as an unsophisticated, overweight black woman.
Adding fuel to their anger is the movie's release during Black History
Month.

"For Eddie to follow what he did with 'Dreamgirls' with this just
doesn't make sense," said Robert M. Entman, author of "The Black Image
in the White Mind: Media and Race in America." "There's no excuse for
him to lend his prestige to something like this…. There has to be a
point where African American stars of his stature have to take some
responsibility for their actions and just say no."

Murphy's stunning turn as James "Thunder" Early in "Dreamgirls" has
earned him rave reviews and renewed respect for a performer who has had
one of Hollywood's most up-and-down careers. He's had his share of hits
("48 Hrs.," "Beverly Hills Cop," "Trading Places" and the "Shrek"
movies) and flops ("The Adventures of Pluto Nash," "The Haunted
Mansion.")

Now, Murphy is in contention for the industry's top honors, which will
be handed out Feb. 25. Ballots are due back Feb. 20.

"Norbit" could end up working in Murphy's favor, the creative forces
behind it say, because the comedy demonstrates Murphy's range and
ability to morph into multiple characters. It's an approach the actor
has used to great success in "Coming to America" and the two "The Nutty
Professor" films. "Norbit," about a wimpy man trapped in a horrible
relationship with a woman (also played by Murphy), was co-written by
Murphy and his brother Charles Murphy, and produced by the actor's
production company.

Murphy, who has shunned print interviews for years, declined to comment.

The comedy has done well with focus groups, said Stacey Snider,
co-chairwoman of DreamWorks: "Audiences have always loved it."

She added that she was "confident" that "Norbit" would have no
influence on academy members' evaluation of Murphy's work in
"Dreamgirls." "People can separate the performance in 'Dreamgirls' for
the career-defining role that it was…. They accept this movie for the
comedy that it is…. I think people are wise enough and savvy enough to
understand the spirit that was intended. They know not to read too much
into it."

One academy voter, John DiSimeo, who is a member of the public
relations branch, agreed. "As a voter, it doesn't impact me. We're able
to focus on the work itself…. The focus has been on his work in
'Dreamgirls' and whatever comes out after it is for the most part
irrelevant." (He has already sent in his ballot, but declined to
specify his pick.)

The film's release date, planned months in advance, was tied to
research that showed February to be a good month for comedies,
according to Paramount.

Gerry Rich, president of worldwide marketing at Paramount Pictures,
said that time of year was a "robust moviegoing period for mainstream
comedies. 'Hitch' did really well during this time of year."

Old news to me. I have a friend who's from the Ninth Ward. Her mother is still
there, because she refuses to be run out by anything so petty as a lousy Cat 5
hurricane, an incompetnat government or anything else. Seriously, though, it's
hard going there. The only basic services available are in the French Quarter

New Orleans Residents Are Bailing Out

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans is a city on a knife's edge. A year and
a half after Hurricane Katrina, an alarming number of residents are
leaving or seriously thinking of getting out for good.

They have become fed up with the violence, the bureaucracy, the
political finger-pointing, the sluggish rebuilding and the doubts
about the safety of the levees.

"The mayor says, `Come back home. Every area should come back.' For
what?" said Genevieve Bellow, who rebuilt her home in heavily damaged
eastern New Orleans but has been unable to get anything done about the
trash and abandoned apartment buildings in her neighborhood and may
leave town. "I have no confidence in anything or anybody."

A survey released in November found that 32 percent of city residents
polled may leave within two years. University of New Orleans political
scientist Susan Howell, who did the survey, said more will give up if
the recovery does not pick up speed.

In fact, figures from the nation's top three moving companies suggest
more people left the area than moved into it last year.

"People are in a state of limbo. They're asking, `Is it worth it for
me to stay? Is it worth it to invest?' If you don't feel safe, from
crime or the levees, and you see destruction every day when you drive,
it becomes discouraging," Howell said.

If there is an exodus, it could mean more than just a shrunken New
Orleans. It could mean a poorer city, financially and culturally, and
a more desperate one, too, since the people likely to leave are the
most highly educated and younger.

Mayor Ray Nagin and Gov. Kathleen Blanco have urged residents to
return under rebuilding plans with names like Bring New Orleans Back
and Road Home. The mayor has warned that the recovery will take a
decade and has urged people not to give up hope.

But New Orleans' population appears to have plateaued at about half
the pre-storm level of 455,000, well short of Nagin's prediction of
300,000 by the end of 2006. And in many ways, it is a meaner city than
it was before the hurricane.

New Orleans ended 2006 with 161 homicides, for a murder rate higher
than it was before Katrina and more than 4 1/2 times the national
average for cities its size. After starting 2007 with practically one
killing a day, the city has at least 19 slayings so far this year.

The criminal justice system is in disarray, with public defenders so
overworked and witnesses so reluctant to testify that the courts are
revolving doors, putting criminals back on the street. Mistrust
between police and the public is running high, in part because seven
officers were arrested in a deadly shooting during the chaotic
aftermath of Katrina.

Nagin and Police Chief Warren Riley announced a plan last month to
crack down on crime with checkpoints and the putting of more police on
the beat.

For Jennifer Johansen, it is too little, too late. Johansen's neat
yellow house in New Orleans Irish Channel is for sale, and the nurse,
who returned to the city after Katrina, hopes to be in Seattle before
spring.

The gunfire she used to hear until about a month ago made her uneasy
about watching TV in her living room, and she yearns to live in a
vibrant, safe city.

"I kept thinking, things would get better. But it just took too long
for a response from the city, the mayor, the police chief, to address
the increased crime," she said.

Louisiana demographer Elliott Stonecipher said: "You get the sense
talking to people on the ground in New Orleans that a lot of people
are right on the edge. They're just about to the point where they
believe they have to decide."

Blanco's Road Home program, born 10 months after the storm, has been
vilified by politicians and civic leaders as too slow to distribute
$7.5 billion in federal aid to buy out homeowners or help them
rebuild. As of Feb. 5, Road Home had taken 105,739 applications and
resolved only 532 cases, granting $33.8 million. At the current rate,
Road Home would take more than 13 years to complete.

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., called Road Home a debacle. In hopes of
jump-starting the neighborhood rebuildings, the mayor has put in place
a gap-loan program to let homeowners borrow on their promised Road
Home grants.

But before Hailey mixes up one more treat, the
oven will have to be retrofitted with the new safety door that Hasbro
says it will begin sending out soon to those who request them. "She is
/not/ going to be happy," Kindler says. It might just be time to haul
out that old Snoopy Sno-Cone Machine.

City, state and federal officials have traded the blame over the slow

So far, the federal government has earmarked about $750 million for
infrastructure projects. The state homeland security department,
charged with distributing the money, has given out only about half
that. The governor said the city has been slow to complete the
paperwork.

It was that kind of back-and-forth that prompted Ken White and his
wife, Kathy, to give up and move to New York last year.

"We came back a
