Re: [scifinoir2] Justice League movie helmed by Happy Feet Director

2007-08-06 Thread KeithBJohnson
I don't know, I hear "The Bourne Ultimatum" is chock-full of action. Funny: I
loved the first two Bourne flicks. But I like the first Bourne flick better
than the second, because it had more intrigue and suspense, yet fans like the
hyperactivity of the second, and, I guess, the third, better. Director Paul
Greengrass says the fans come to Bourne for the action, not any political
intrigue. I actually like the political and cat-and-mouse stuff first, with a
lot of action as icing on the cake. The first one reminded me more of the great
'60s era spy flicks.

I did like the actor who played Carmel (probably misspelled). I even liked
Lucifer's right
hand man chained to a rock like a Greek godling.

I checked the author's web site and it appears the dog is/was a feature of the
novels. Oh
save us, please!

It was fine to watch while I recovered from traveling, but I don't need another
tv show
addiction. I have to draw the line somewhere. :-)

I liked the dog :) It was lightweight, but I enjoyed it. I'm a
fan of the brother that was in it, so it was glad to see him working in
a starring role.

I saw the movie when it first came out. Well, it was legally the first two eps
aired back-to-back. Pleasant enough, but not much for me to rave over (pardon
the borrow, rave!). I didn't feel moved to look at the business this weekend.
Didn't even turn on the TV until ten last night.

I ran into the mini-marathon run of "The Fallen" this weekend. Has
anyone read the book(s) that this is based on? It was somewhat
interesting, although every time the talking dog showed up, I
screamed. Please tell me that the talking dog isn't in the original

An interesting take on a Milton-ian universe. I don't think that they
followed all of their ideas all the way through but it was more
interesting than some sci-fi fare.

I didn't see it discussed anywhere here, but the series looks to be a

[scifinoir2] Re: Finally saw "Rise of the Silver Surfer"

2007-08-06 Thread ravenadal
What you said is so true. I too, grew up with these comics.
My "golden age" was the late sixties and early seventies. So I find
the two Fantastic Four movies so bad they are good. To me, they seem
truer to their source material than either the Spider-Man or Batman
franchises. I love the pure goofiness of these characters NOT having
secret identities; of everyone knowing where they live; of their
going out in public and being accessible. I find the notion of
Michael Chiklis' Thing hanging out at the neighborhood bar both
hilarious and charming.

I do wish they had followed the comic and had more interaction
between the Surfer and Kerry Washington's Alicia. But that is a
small nit.

Oh, yeah, and the ending. I hate the ending. Totally unbelievable.
Galactus gets that close, earth is lunch.

Re: [scifinoir2] OT: Blurring the line between ads and reality

2007-08-06 Thread Daryle

Ford and BMW do this best. GM is starting to get it. It¹s smart business.
TV ads are expensive. If you can do a co-op ad with a car manufacturer,
why not? Ford uses the Bond movies and ³24² to show off everything from
their Focus to the Aston Martin (As of March of this year, the Aston Martin
is no longer part of Ford¹s line). BMW changed the world with their BMW
Films series. There¹s no better way to showcase the use of a car than to
show it in action. And there¹s no better way to show it in action than in
an action movie chase scene.

VW is going to have to choose a lane. Either their sensible or they are
sexy. Everybody in my neighborhood who drives a Toureg are families of 3-5
people with children. They didn¹t want to shell out the cash for the
Porsche Cayenne (Which is a Toureg with a Porsche logo on it), and they¹re
too young to want to show up somewhere in a Volvo SUV. The Toureg is not a
car you think of buying when you have an active lifestyle. The BMW X3/X5 is.
Additionally, VW blew it by letting GM get the Transformers product
placement deal. Bumblebee should be a Beetle and everyone knows it. If GM is
able to unload a bunch of Camaros as a result of this movie, it will be
nobody¹s fault BUT VW¹s. VW has done everything in their power to NOT let
the world know that they have a hard top convertible, while BMW and GM have
been promoting theirs all over the place. VW¹s 2007 ad strategy was just
silly.

These type of ads ARE effective, I think, and they work well because people
hate commercials. Look at what Geico has to do to stand out. People don¹t
mind being sold, just not the same dang gone thing every 3 minutes. From the
consumer¹s POV, what difference does it make if it¹s an ad for the car OR
the movie? It¹s another ad. Bring my SHOW back on. When it comes to TV (and
movies for that matter), I¹d rather see the days of one sponsor shows come
back, like The Texaco Star Hour, or Mutual of Omaha¹s Wild Kingdom. I know
some Sci Fi channels shows would still be on the air if they came with
built-in advertising. This is why my new show comes sponsored by Samsung, so
that there will always be new phones and TV screens in every episode. Or
maybe I should get Victoria¹s Secret on board?

Whoa. I missed the ³Zoë Saldana² part. Also the ³Sigourney Weaver² part. I
may show up for this movie after all! Michelle Rodriguez...I¹m sorta over.
I don¹t know if I like to look at Sigourney Weaver as much as Zoë Saldana,
but she does sort of lend credibility to otherwise crappy movies.

Re: [scifinoir2] Justice League movie helmed by Happy Feet Director

2007-08-06 Thread Martin
IMO, if Bale *doesn't* appear in this, it's only for one f two reasons- not
enough money on the table or he's busy with another project. The fact that
Brandon Routh is already chiseled in as Superman tells me that they want
continuity, and Bale is Batman/Bruce Wayne right now. Warned Bros went to a lot
of trouble to put him in the role for "Batman Begins", and I don't think they
want to throw fans' mental tracking off by tossing up what would be the fifth
guy in the Cape and Cowl.

Daryle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: First
reaction is to agree, Green Lantern, because they're probably going
to go John Stewart, and you know the Black dude has to die. But I'm with
Martin. Flash is gonna get it and in a big way.

If McG gets to direct this, which, it's Warner Brothers, so he might... I
don't think Christian Bale is going to appear, because McG is a HORRIBLE
director and Christian Bale is...well, Christian Bale, not Drew Barrymore.

I'm ashamed to say this, but I kinda wish they'd talk to Quentin Tarantino
about this picture. After "Transformers", the action genre has been flipped.
QT does a really good job of ripping off Chinese and Japanese direction
styles, and I believe that's what this movie needs. Wonder Woman needs to
really beat the daylights out of someone very early in the picture in order
to keep our attention, and the bad guys need to be BAD, not famous. I don't
think anyone else can pull that off right now. There's a tendency to spend a
lot of time on Superman's flying around, which was great in 1978, but not
 now.

No, I don't mind sharing, and I *really* appreciate the concern. I got a
call at 4:30 am Friday that my mother had died of a heart attack. It was
completely unexpected, because even at age 81, she was in perfect health
according to every test the docs had run on her previously. She had two
complete physicals a year, and the last in January was very good. I flew out
from Atlanta to Fort Worth yesterday, and am undergoing the painful process

Deceased 'Lost' Vet Joins Cameron's 'Avatar'

 August 3 2007

James Cameron has added two more actors to the cast of his
high-profile feature "Avatar," including Michelle Rodriguez.

Also joining the previously announced Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana,
Sigourney Weaver, Wes Studi and CCH Pounder will be theater veteran
 Stephen Lang.

Parts of "Avatar" have already begun shooting in Los Angeles, though
production will move to New Zealand in October to take up residence on
 the Weta Digital soundstages there.

The plot, which takes place in a galaxy far, far away, involves a
battle between humans and some wacky CGI aliens. Cameron has been
tweaking the script for around a decade. Lang will play a Marine
colonel dispatched to the planet of Pandora to take care of its
troops, according to Variety. Rodriguez will play an ex-Marine pilot.

The 20th Century Fox production, budgeted in the $200 million range,
has already staked its claim to a May 22, 2009 release date, when it
will hit theaters in both digital 3-D and 2-D formats.

In addition to her brief and not-exactly-embraced turn as Ana-Lucia
Cortez on "Lost," Rodriguez has also appeared in "Girlfight,"
"BloodRayne" and the upcoming "Battle in Seattle."

While best known for his Tony nominated theater work, Lang's feature
credits include "Gods and Generals" and "Manhunter."

Folks I work with get paid (a lot) for doing stuff

professional P-O-V, it's a good ad. It draws the
viewer right in. From a consumer's P-O-V, I feel

Re: [scifinoir2] Finally saw "Rise of the Silver Surfer"

2007-08-06 Thread KeithBJohnson
Agree with all you say. The movie's harmless, pleasantly forgettable. Doesn't
risk much, doesn't offer much. The Surfer FX were okay, but the character was
lame and really not all that powerful, impressive, or utilized. I'm not sorry I
saw it, but i wouldn't pay to see it again. It'll be perfectly fine as a DVD
bought on sale, to watch on cold winter days. I like about the same level as
"Daredevil"--maybe a bit less.
As for Alba, nice girl, weak actress. And how frustrating is it that she's
always front and center in the commercials and movie posters? Also, I may be
one of the few men who doesn't think Alba's particularly hot. She's okay, but a
little too slim and lacking in curves for this man's tastes. Now Johannsen in
skintight suit would've been a sight to see! Whew!

Oh, and the rendering of Galactus and the final "battle" between him and Surfer
SUCKED

-- Original message --
From: "ravenadal" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I finally saw the new Fantastic Four movie: Rise of the Silver Surfer
(for two bucks at the budget theater). It was a pleasant way an
spend an afternoon. That is, once you get past the incongruity of
latina Jessica Alba masquerading as a blue-eyed blonde (initially she
looks disconcertingly like one of those big-headed Bratz dolls - the
big blue eyes too dark, too much straw blonde hair and way too much
tan). Don't get me wrong, Alba is hot (especially when she puts her
eye glasses on) in her stunning array of high heels and pencil skirts,
and she gives a spunky, strong-spined performance. Still, you kinda
wish they had opted to hire a hot, strong-willed blonde. I,
personally, would have paid at least THREE dollars to see Scarlet
Johansson in a fantastic suit.

I'm sitting up late night unable to sleep (horrible news from back home,
boarding a plane in a few) and of course I need a scifi fix/distraction, so
I watch "Painkiller Jane" after "Doctor Who". Bad as that show is, they have
the nerve tonight to do with is basically a "clip" show. A thin skein of an
original plot is stretched over the frame of flashbacks from past eps. I
*hate* clip shows, can't remember a single one for any series that I really
liked. But to see one from a show that's already bad is beyond bad...

Re: [scifinoir2] Justice League movie helmed by Happy Feet Director

2007-08-06 Thread Daryle
First reaction is to agree, Green Lantern, because they're probably going
to go John Stewart, and you know the Black dude has to die.

There's a tendency to spend a
lot of time on Superman's flying around, which was great in 1978, but not
now.

Re: [scifinoir2] Finally saw "Rise of the Silver Surfer"

My vote would have been Scarlett Johansen as well, but I think the mistake
you¹re making is actually LISTENING to Jessica Alba in these movies. I
quite often forget what Jessica¹s voice sounds like, because I swear when
she comes on screen my mind wanders. My EYES don¹t, but my mind absolutely
wanders. I guess the only consolation is, if you¹ve seen ³Transformers²,
you see that it could be worse...Jessica could be playing a teenager.

Rise of the Silver Surfer is what having HBO is all about, I think. I will
keep going to see these movies (Just like I¹ll be there for Louis
Leterrier¹s Hulk movie and Favreau¹s Iron Man) in theaters because I love
Fantastic Four, I grew up with these characters, and I suppose, stuff like
the Fantasticar is made for me.

Did I read this correctly and none of the robots in Minority Report
 made the list?

Your support means a great deal. Obviously I'm on the Net right now, but sleep
ain't coming easily nor is it welcomed, so I'm occupying my mind from dwelling
on the harsh reality by posting e-mails.

I flew out
from Atlanta to Fort Worth yesterday, and am undergoing the painful process
of planning the funeral. Family is reeling, I'm here helping my two brothers
make plans, and it ain't fun at all.

I do think of y'all as family, as all the e-mails to you should indicate, so
I do appreciate the ability to share with you. Say prayers for me and the
family.

What news? We're family...unless you'd prefer to keep it private...we're
still family,
and pray that it's not as bad as it sounds...
