A dozen major Heroes castmembers are set to embark on a previously announced seven-city world tour this weekend. The photo-op-friendly global tour coincides with (a) the DVD release of the NBC series' Emmy-nominated first season and (b) the show's debut in international territories and is also meant to ratchet up the buzz on the sci-fi hit's new season. The Heroes World Tour will include stops in Europe, Asia and North America, with the cast dividing and conquering the globe in groups of four apiece. The Brady Bunch went to the Grand Canyon, so this is pretty cool for us, Greg Grunberg said at a press conference last Thursday. The message of Heroes has always been about our world being a completely interconnected place, and this world tour is a celebration of that spirit, series creator Tim Kring said. We're all very excited to embark on this adventure next week and eager to hear from fans everywhere. Jack Coleman, Hayden Panettiere, Adrian Pasdar and Milo Ventimiglia, along with executive producer Dennis Hammer, will hit up Munich Aug. 26-27, Paris Aug. 28-29 and London Aug. 30 through Sept. 2. While they're launching their marketing initiative on an unsuspecting Europe, Grunberg, Ali Larter, Masi Oka and Sendhil Ramamurthy will be front the promotional bonanza's Asia leg, appearing in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore on the same dates, while Noah Grey-Cabey, James Kyson Lee, Zachary Quinto and newcomer Dania Ramirez, accompanied by coexecutive producer Jeph Loeb and graphic-novel artist Tim Sale, will be sticking closer to home with stops in New York City and Toronto. In addition to gracing the respective cities with their heroic presence, the cast will be making personal appearances, engaging in meet-and-greets with fans, making TV appearances, attending - and, no doubt, causing - local media events and visiting various iconic landmarks along their tour. In Tokyo on Aug. 27, Grunberg, Larter, Oka and Ramamurthy will be hosting a movie-like red carpet premiere of their show, while in New York, Quinto Co. will be appearing the following day at an in-store DVD signing at the NBC Experience Store. NBC is touting the worldwide rendezvous as a carbon-neutral tour and has already announced plans to offset the hefty emissions the round-the-globe plane rides will cause by aiming to plant 188 trees in a Texas wildlife refuge to offset their carbon footprint. The tour is also donating green to the green cause, with 10 percent of the proceeds from merchandise sold at the Aug. 28 NYC signing to The Conservation Fund. For fans who haven't quite racked up the frequent-flier miles required to follow their Heroes abroad but who still wish to keep abreast of their every promotional movement, the entire tour, sponsored by Nissan, will be chronicled on NBC's Website, with daily postings on the cast's whereabouts and exclusive video of their adventures. The Emmy-nominated series kicked off production on its second season last week. The season premiere airs Sept. 24. The season one DVD is set for release Aug. 28. Re: [scifinoir2] Jet Li Lowers Expectations for Film with Jackie Chan
I was just talking to my wife this weekend about that. For years I wasn't able to see Chuck Norris films, because my folks had quit going to the movies. Fortunately those great ancient China kung fu movies became a staple on television, so I was able to say those later. But for a long time I thought I was missing something. Then, in college, I finally saw my first Chuck Norris flick and it was awful! Can't remember which one it was, but I was disappointed in every way possible. His onscreen fighting is probably more realistic than most, being pretty spare and full of roundhouse kicks (not appropriate so much in real fights, but still, okay). But I found his fighting to be boring. After seeing Bruce Wing Chun the hell out of people at near superhuman speeds, and years of watching flicks where dudes all but fly, Norris was a letdown. Then there was his screen presence--or lack thereof. The guy is just plain *boring*. I saw maybe two of his flicks, then quit watching them. Van Damme-- and while we're at it, let's list Dolph Lundgren and Steven Seagal--isn't much better. -- Original message -- From: Daryle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sadly, Jean Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris are more known to the public than even Chow Yun Fat. [scifinoir2] My Take - The Last Legion
My quick take: I was hoping for another Excalibur or King Arthur. I mean, common: Ben Kingsley! Instead, I got Xena-lite on the big screen. Predictable plot, lame action, cheap looking sets and FX, cliched, stereotyped characters. When a movie like this is good, the speeches and stuff are moving; when it's bad, you note how everyone keeps overusing phrases like my destiny or legends say, and seems to stand stiffly upright while saying it. A day later I had to ask Phyllis about some of the 'plot points; a week later it's darn near impossible to write a review. I'd have had more fun watching a Technicolor classic like Ivanhoe on TV; hell, Bing Crosby in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court might have been more entertaining! My full take: I love good movies about knights fighting epic battles for the good of the realm. I love good movies dealing with the legend of King Arthur. And I even love good revisionist films that take a new angle on the Arthurian legend. Unfortunately, The Last Legion doesnt fit into any of these categories. While not a bad movie, its too bland and by-the-numbers to be enjoyable. The movie starts with a cultured-sounding narrator (Ben Kingsley, in it for the paycheck I guess) speaking about the legend of a great sword, forged from the heart of a falling star for Julius Caesar. The sword, were told, is passed down to subsequent generations of Caesars, serving as a symbol of justice and right to aid their wise rule of the Roman Empire. Sometime during Romes long decline, the sword is lost; hidden, legends say, until the day a worthy successor finds it. The intro alone threw me. While I dont mind new takes on legends, I never imagined Excalibur (and if this is a spoiler, sorry, but youd figure it out about two minutes into the movie anyway) as being a tool of the Romans. Yeah, I know: not all leaders of Rome were evil and sadistic. There were indeed some pretty decent guys wearing the purple. But still: Excalibur crafted for Caesar? Somehow it just doesnt feel right having the pagan/Christian blade of legend start out like that. Anyway, enter Romulus, a boy descended from Caesar himself, who has been raised to be a man of honor. At the death of the current ruler, Romulus becomes emperorbut the moment is short lived. See, the evil Goth leader Odoacer, ticked at not getting amply rewarded for his years of mercenary service to Rome, decides to attack. Rome is thrown into chaos, Romulus parents are killed, and Romulus himself is banished to an island for the rest of his life. But luck is on his side. Romulus finds the fabled sword of legend on the island (in a truly hard to believe setup), and is then rescued by his sworn protector Aurelius (Colin Firth), in another contrived scene. Aurelius is an honorable soldier who leads a legion of honorable soldiers. After theyre betrayed by their fellows, this Last Legion goes on the run, fleeing the pursuing Goths, and ultimately making their way to Britain. Theyre aided by Romulus teacher and mentor, the mysterious MerlI mean Ambrosinus--(Ben Kingsley sleepwalking his way through one of those cookie cutter wise-old-sage-with-a-British-accent roles). Through hardship and despair and battle, the Legion and their charge fight their way to victory, and help spawn a legend. Yawn. If my summary seems bored or hurried, well, so is the movie. Theres not much original or engaging here. True, the idea that Arthur is descended from the Caesars could be intriguing if handled properly, but here it really doesnt matter, as any original ideas are lost in such average execution. The plots so predictable you can literally guess whats coming next. All of the sets and locales are barely adequate, as if the budget couldnt keep up with the producers dreams of a glorious epic. Clichés abound: an exotic warrior woman (Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai), cast out from her people, who of course falls in love with the European stud a Big Black Guy as the muscle, less a skilled fighter than he is a brawler (one guess as to whether he lives) Central Casting villains in the form of the Goths, so savagely barbaric you expect them to feast on children between battles. Think I should tell Hollywood that barbarian actually meant non-Greco/Roman and didn't *automatically* m ean murdering psychopath? Anyone on this list of Germanic descent--man, your ancestors were nasty! As Romulus, Thomas Sangster is all big innocent eyes, and spends his time getting into one contrived dangerous situation after another. Firth looks okay as a Roman soldier, but somehow seems wrong for the role. Aurelius is meant to be war weary and earnest, but I just kept thinking his expression looked more like someone frowning from a nagging headache or gas. Wooden would be an accurate description of his acting. Or is he still doing the stiff dude act from the Bridget Jones films? Kingsleys

[scifinoir2] Queen Guitarist Gets Doctorate in Astrophysics
A sound lesson that it's never too late--and that you can always try different things LONDON - Guitarist and songwriter Brian May has completed his doctorate in astrophysics _ three decades after he put academia on hold to form the rock group Queen. The rocker was awarded his qualification Thursday by London's Imperial College and said submitting his thesis, Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud, to supervisors was as nerve-racking as any stadium gig. I'm feeling rather joyful. I cannot tell you how much of a weight off the mind it is, May said late Thursday. May was an astrophysics student at Imperial College when he joined Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor to form Queen in 1970, but dropped his doctorate as the glam rock band became successful. Queen became one of Britain's biggest music groups in the 1970s, with hits including Bohemian Rhapsody and We Will Rock You. Following Mercury's 1991 death, May produced two solo albums, the latest of which, Another World appeared in 1998. But the guitarist continued to pursue his out-of-this-world interests _ and last year co-authored a book titled Bang! The Complete History of the Universe. He told reporters Thursday that handing over his completed thesis _ a 48,000 word study which seeks to prove planets and dust clouds in our solar system orbit in the same direction _ and facing examiners for a review of his work was a tough challenge. It was a bit nerve-racking walking into the room, but once we got going it was fascinating, May said. There's always that feeling they could ask that big question that could sink you, but luckily they didn't. May will be formally presented with his doctorate next May at a ceremony at London's Royal Albert Hall. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Wonder if Sulu will also be gay, the way George Takei is in real life? -- Original message -- From: Daryle [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is JJ Abrams. Has he written a female character that didn't have issues? She couldn't be both brilliant (she once single-handedly rewired the entire communications system of the Enterprise from the Bridge) and attractive. She has to have a shady past. I got a good chuckle out of that Young Hikaru Sulu has to be a bit of a wildcat. The dude's first job on the Enterprise was staff Physicist. Basically, the biggest geek on the Federation flagship. Wildcat. This movie should be interesting. On 8/23/07 11:51 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: why must Uhura be tomboyish? Where poverty exists, all are poorer. Where hate flourishes, all are corrupted. Where injustice reins, all are unequal. Whitney Moore Young, Jr. was born July 31, 1921 in Lincoln Ridge, Kentucky. He was raised, educated and graduated valedictorian from the Lincoln Institute, where his father served as president. His mother, Laura, was the first black American postmaster in Kentucky and the second in the United States. Young received his B. S. degree at Kentucky State College (1941). During World War II, Young received training in electrical engineering at MIT. He was assigned to a road construction crew of black soldiers supervised by Southern white officers. After just three weeks, he was promoted from private to first sergeant. Despite the tension his promotion created, Young was an effective mediator between the white officers and black soldiers angry about their poor treatment. After the war, Young joined his wife, Margaret, at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Masters Degree in social work (1947). From 1947-1949, Young served as the industrial relations secretary of the St. Paul, Minnesota branch of the National Urban League. He moved to Omaha, Nebraska and assumed duties as executive secretary of that branch. In 1950, he became the Omaha branch president. From 1954 to 1961, Young served as dean of the Atlanta University School of Social Work. He pushed for federal aid to cities, proposing a domestic Marshall Plan, which was partially incorporated into President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty. He described his proposals for integration, social programs and affirmative action in his two books, To Be Equal (1964) and Beyond Racism (1969). As executive director of the National Urban League (1961-1971), Young focused on gaining equality for blacks in business and politics and improving opportunities for the urban poor. He appealed to corporate leaders to support job programs, low-income housing and education for blacks. He advised presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon on race. Young was president of the National Association of Social Workers and the National Conference on Social Welfare. He served on the boards and advisory committees of the Rockefeller Foundation, Urban Coalition and Urban Institute. In 1969, Young received the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award. Young's many friendships with US business and political leaders caused considerable controversy in the black community. But, Young believed it was important to maintain communication with the centers of financial and political power, no matter how these race relations might be in the nation's streets and schools. On March 11, 1971, Young drowned while swimming with friends in Lagos, Nigeria, where he was attending a conference sponsored by the African-American Institute.
