[scifinoir2] "Pushing Daisies"

2007-10-03 Thread KeithBJohnson
Anyone watching this new series? It's quirky to say the least. Reminds me in a
way of a live, macabre Dr. Seuss tale. For those who don't know the man
guy--Ned--has the ability to bring any dead thing back to life. The problem is,
if the person is still alive one minute later, the universe requires a balance:
in other words, a nearby person will drop dead instead. Ned discovered this as
a young boy who revived his mother, only to note that the neighbor across the
street dropped dead one minute later. The other problem is, once Ned touches a
person to revive him/her, if he *ever* touches that person again, that person
dies--permanently. He discovered that the same day he revived his mom, when she
dropped dead after kissing him goodnight.

Now Ned bakes pies, using his powers to make the fruit fresh. he's discovered
by a private eye (Chi McBride) who blackmails Ned: he keeps the secret as long
as Ned uses his power to revive dead crime victims for one minute. Just long
enough for them to tell Ned who killed them, and then let the detective "solve"
the case and collect the credit and the reward. another problem: Ned's long
lost love was killed, and he revived her, but couldn't bring himself to kill
her again. Now the girl of his dreams is alive, but he can never touch her.
Sad, quirky, darkly humorous. Has a fast-paced dialog that reminds me at times
of "Moonlighting" or "Gilmore Girls". Odd, pastel and old-fashioned sets, that
remind me of "Edward Scissorhands" at times.

Not sure I'll want to see it every week, but I'm enjoying it tonight. Let me
know what you think--especially you, Martin.

Re: [scifinoir2] Any thoughts on Wii

2007-10-03 Thread Daryle
The Wii gets a BIG yes from me. It's a particularly good console if you are
NOT a big gamer, as the games are actually enjoyable, and once you buy most
of the game titles, that's it. No online subscriptions to buy. I'm not a
big "gotta beat the 8 year old in Slovenia" guy. I like to just turn on,
get my kung-fu-beat-em-up on, and get back to my life. The Wii controller
encourages getting up off the couch, the game graphics are nice, and above
all, having a Wii in your living room just LOOKS nice. Plus I think the
price went down. PS3 and Xbox 360 are for people who take gaming VERY
seriously. I think you'll enjoy the Wii. Try it out at a GameStop or
something first. See if you like the controller.

[scifinoir2] McGruder no longer the angriest black man in America

2007-10-03 Thread ravenadal

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: TELEVISION
McGruder learning to accept success
No longer the angriest black man in America
By Greg Braxton

Tribune Newspapers: Los Angeles Times

October 3, 2007

Aaron McGruder, the Artist Formerly Known as the Angriest Black Man
in America, can't stop smiling. In fact, he's busting up, bobbing and
weaving as he reacts to the animation unfolding on his living room
wall big screen. It's from the new season of "The Boondocks," the
adaptation of his button-pushing hip-hop-flavored newspaper strip,
centered on 10-year-old black militant Huey Freeman and his gangsta-
wannabe younger brother Riley, who have to move from Chicago to live
with their gruff grandfather in the suburbs.

The appearance of one of the show's breakout characters, Uncle
Ruckus, a foul-mouthed black man who hates black people, makes the
slim, unassuming McGruder laugh so hard that his outburst fills the
room in his hilly West Los Angeles home, even with the volume turned
up to near ear-splitting levels. He's further amused by his cartoon's
caricatures of Larry King, Bill Cosby and pundit Ann Coulter.

A mash-up of in-your-face urban humor and Korean-drawn anime that
became one of the flagships of the edgy Adult Swim late-night lineup
on Cartoon Network, "The Boondocks" returns next Monday for its
second season after a roughly two-year break.

The first season lighted fuses even before its debut. Rev. Al
Sharpton and other black activists were angered by the show's liberal
use of a racial epithet, charging that the word is inappropriate for
humor.

Since he launched the strip in 1999, "The Boondocks" has been an all-
consuming passion that has taken McGruder to emotional peaks and
troughs. But on this day, despite the frenzy of last-minute tinkering
and adjustments, he seems at peace with himself and his creation.

"It's just a much better show than last season," he says, rubbing his
hand through his closely cropped hair. "It looks so much better, the
performances are better, everything is just coming together. It's
just so much more satisfying, and we're much closer to the goal of
what I think the show can be." But to reach this moment of
contentment, McGruder, 33, decided that he needed to pay a heavy
price -- giving up the vehicle that not only brought him national
fame and celebrity but had been the driving force of his life since
college. To be happier with "The Boondocks -- The TV Show," he had to
let go of "The Boondocks -- The Strip."

He quit his daily satirical platform, which was syndicated in more
than 300 newspapers nationwide, including the Chicago Tribune, Los
Angeles Times and The Washington Post. His abrupt and unexpected
departure shocked fans, and McGruder had few explanations as he crept
from public view, turning down invitations for talk shows and
speaking engagements.

Bounced between strip, series

"I wanted to hang on to both, but ultimately I made the decision that
the show could not be sacrificed," McGruder says. "Once I decided
that, it was an easy decision, even if it cost me. I didn't want to
do the strip badly and the show badly." McGruder is still haunted by
the memories of bouncing between supervising a complex animated
series and churning out a seven-day-a-week strip.

The ordeal of juggling both gigs nearly crushed him. He was unhappy
with the early storyboards and artwork on the series, and he was
increasingly frustrated by the relentless delays, snafus and
difficulties of working with an overseas studio. "There's only one
word for that first season -- insanity," he says. "It was just a
horrible situation. I hadn't worked one day of TV in my life, and all
of a sudden I'm running my own show. I didn't know when you work on
an animated show that there's a crisis every week. Only the first
year working on the strip alone was harder." What's more, McGruder
admits he's a lot less confrontational. "I was absolutely a jerk.
There were certain things that I gave up -- patience, sleep. I was
under so much pressure. I took myself too seriously."

>From this distance, he's far from dissatisfied with the inaugural
season -- the series represented the realization of a lifelong dream,
and it earned solid ratings for Adult Swim -- the home of off-the-
wall fare such as "Robot Chicken" and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" -- and
a fan base that hailed McGruder at last summer's Comic-Con.

More significant , "The Return of the King," an episode about Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s reversal of his "turn the other cheek"
philosophy after awakening from a 32-year coma and witnessing bling-
wearing rappers and raunchy images on BET, scored him a Peabody Award
for "distinguished achievement and meritorious service." Now, the
cartoonist who once bragged about calling Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice a "murderer" to her face and who has taken on BET,

[scifinoir2] OT: Where I've Been

2007-10-03 Thread g123curious
Tracey had written to me off-list via e-mail asking how I am. I
thought that I'd send out a general note. Bottomline: I've been busy
with my work and my blog. At work, I have 2 web site re-designs which
are launching Oct. 16, 2007. So, I'll be flat out 'til then with long
hours in the office. After then, I'll post to SciFiNoir2.

In other news...

I woke last Thursday night at 3:25 am to the sounds of gun-fire
outside my first-floor bedroom window. Boston Police arrived at 3:35
am. Street outside the house next door was littered with shell
casings. Car in front of next door had several bullet holes and shell
casing on it.

Street was taped off and CSI:Boston arrived shortly thereafter and
stayed 'til ~5:15 am. To make a long story short, there was a drive-
by next door probably involving the knuckleheads who live next door.
At least 2 guns were involved and a 9mm slug found its way thru our
living room window and came to rest on the floor in front of my
wife's computer desk. MOre shell casing found by the side door of the
house next door.

Obviously, we are working with neighbors and police to get the
knuckleheads next door out and/or in jail... whichever we can effect
first. Bottomline: my wife and I are okay. No injuries.

CSI:Boston uses little numbered cones just like they do on TV. So we
had some little numbered cones in our condo, too. All of CSI reps
looked like Gil Grissom clones. NONE of them looked like Sarah Sidle,
Catherine Willows, or Sofia Curtis. They wouldn't let us take photos.

As of last night, one person was arrested next door and this person
didn't live next door. Arrested with drug possession with intent to
distribute. Up until this event, our street had been very quiet. A
state rep's/politician's family lives across the street.

GIBSON MAY BE GREEN LANTERN IN 'JLA'

THE SKINNY: Trying to predict who's going to be cast in the upcoming JUSTICE
LEAGUE movie and who's not is a bit like trying to predict what their biggest
foes the Injustice League will do next - only it's not quite as fun.

First of all, it turns out that Jessica Biel will not be playing Wonder Woman
in the new movie. According to Entertainment Weekly, the former 7TH HEAVEN star
has declined the part for reasons not disclosed. I imagine having to wear a
honking big bra with an eagle on it and cold metal bracelets might be a deal
breaker for any actress, though.

According to UGO.com, a name has been floated for another of the movie's big
roles: Tyrese Gibson has been announced as one of the candidates to play the
role of John Stewart, the Green Lantern. UGO's sources, however, state that the
TRANSFORMERS actor is only one of several people being considered for the role.
In other words, don't start pasting cutouts of Gibson's face into your old
copies of GREEN LANTERN just yet - if you're the sort of sick individual that
does such things, that is.

Breaking Story: Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Stolen Set Photos!

Written by Robert Sanchez

Tuesday, 02 October 2007

Steven Spielberg has another reason to be pissed off. Over 2000 production
stills, production budget breakdown and other sensitive materials from
Indiana Jones 4 were stolen from his office.

This is a story that we are going to be hearing much more of in the
upcoming days but here is the skinny.

Over 2000 production stills, plenty of sensitive paperwork including a
complete production budget breakdown, possibly the script from Indiana
Jones 4 and multiple computers were stolen from Spielberg’s Universal
Studio office.

The thief started contacting multiple entertainment websites including
TMZ.com and offering the stolen goods for a sum of $2000.00.

The IESB has been informed that TMZ.com may had obtained some of stolen
property and were on the verge of running the story on its TV division
until Paramount lawyers stepped in.

TMZ.com went as far as promoting their upcoming story but we have been
informed that they have scrapped their original plans.

The good news for Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and the fine folks over
at Paramount, the alleged thief was apprehended today at the Standard
Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. around 4:00pm PST.

We have been told that the thief was apprehended by LAPD and the FBI with
the help of a member of the online press that had been offered the stolen
property. Sources tell us that an undercover sting operation was set in
motion late last night with the help of the unnamed member of the online
press.

A meeting between the alleged thief and the unnamed online reporter was
set up for 4:00pm at the Standard Hotel on Sunset Blvd. The sting went as
planned and the arrest was made. The IESB has been told that the alleged
thief was in possession of the stolen property.

We are waiting for Paramount Studios to issue an official comment at this
time.

Charges to be filed against the individual are unknown at this time.

Stay tuned as this story develops.

This role is tailor-made for Richard Brooks circa the mid nineties.
Mr. Brooks will be 46 years-old on his next birthday.

[scifinoir2] Asteroid Named for `Star Trek' Actor

Asteroid Named for `Star Trek' Actor

By SAMANTHA GROSS
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - A piece of outer space named for George Takei is in kind
of a rough neighborhood for somebody who steers a starship: an asteroid
belt.

An asteroid between Mars and Jupiter has been renamed 7307 Takei in honor
of the actor, best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the original "Star
Trek" series and movies.

"I am now a heavenly body," Takei, 70, said Tuesday, laughing. "I found
out about it yesterday. ... I was blown away. It came out of the clear,
blue sky - just like an asteroid."

The celestial rock, discovered by two Japanese astronomers in 1994, was
formerly known as 1994 GT9. It joins the 4659 Roddenberry (named for the
show's creator, Gene Roddenberry) and the 68410 Nichols (for co-star
Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Uhura). Other main-belt asteroids have
been named for science fiction luminaries Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov.

The renaming of 7307 Takei was approved by the International Astronomical
Union's Committee on Small Body Nomenclature. About 14,000 asteroid names
have been approved by the panel, while about 165,000 asteroids have been
identified and numbered, union spokesman Lars Lindberg Christensen said.

Unlike the myriad Web sites that offer to sell naming rights to stars, the
IAU committee-approved names are actually used by astronomers, said Tom
Burbine, the Mount Holyoke College astronomy professor who proposed the
name swap.

"This is the name that will be used for all eternity," he said.

Burbine said he suggested Takei's name in part out of appreciation for his
work with the Japanese American Citizens League and with the gay rights
group Human Rights Campaign. Takei, a spokesman for HRC's Coming Out
Project, was cultural affairs chairman of the JACL, and he was appointed
to the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission by former President Clinton.

Takei has appeared on NBC's "Heroes" and appears regularly on Howard
Stern's satellite radio show.

Under the committee's policies, whoever discovers an asteroid has 10 years
in which to propose a name. After that, the panel considers other
suggestions, although it warns would-be namers to avoid anything "in
questionable taste" and any names honoring political or military figures
sooner than 100 years after their deaths.

"A History of Violence" was hot. Maria Bello is a revelation as Viggo
Mortensen's wife. "History" is easily Cronenberg's most mature motion
picture, and I have been a fan since the late seventies when he was
putting out high class trash like "Rabid" (who could forget former
porn star Marilyn Chambers as a young woman with an anus-like orifice
underneath her armpit from which a phallus-like stinger "bites" her
victims, transforming them into rabid zombie-like creatures who spread
their rabid disease, causing the world to fall into apocalyptic
chaos?). I get misty-eyed just thinking about it.

yeah, i've noticed that a lot of us are having this conversation about the
focus on the young 20ish actors for these roles. From the new Lois Lane (the
weak Kate Bosworth), to the "X-Babies" (the too young Iceman and Rogue in the
movies), to the new Bionic Woman, there's a fascination with the very young.
But I prefer those actors with a little more presence and maturity to them. And

There's one problem with this. They are lookin for 20=somethings to early
30-somethings to play these roles. Because of this a lot of actors most of us
think would be perfect for these roles are SOL. So juding from these
guildlines Gibson would be a quilfied canidate for the role-provided he has a

I like the 70s flicks. Everyone in Hollywood must have been on drugs because
there were some really crazy/scary movies made.

Where is a good place to ask about horror movies?

There was a movie that I watched when I was young. All I remember was that
there was a monster chasing some teens in a forest. The ending was real
strange.
It involved a girl and a baby.

Also there was a movie that was supposed to be either pro LSD or anti LSD. It
involved some people in a mall being killed.
Both movies were both produced in the 70s,

Surely only forlorn despair could make anyone act so recklessly, it
seems. But in time we come to realize that Anna really is a decent
person trying to correct a wrong. As she comes to understand how
Tatiana was cruelly used she wants to make sure that someone pays—or
at least acknowledges the loss of this young life. "She was used and
thrown away like garbage", Anna says. "Someone should care about who
she was and what happened to her".

seems dominated by violence and cruelty. It's as if with this one
small victory she'll prove that the world's not all bad. She's the
lone voice in a world where crime and cruelty might be the norm, and
Anna can't accept that. Cronenberg underscores this point by focusing
on the Russian underworld, making it seem more substantial than
Anna's. As the film progresses, we see Anna less and less, Watts

Cruise Ship Safety: Eight Things They
Don't Tell You That You Need to Know
by www.SixWise.com

Cruise
vacations are enjoyed by 10 million
Americans every year. Most of these getaways provide all of the "excitement"
a vacation should -- exotic ports, pampering, good food, relaxation -- and
not a whole lot else.

 cruise

>From 2002 to 2005, 24 people disappeared from cruise ships.

But for some, an unexpected crime or accident has turned their cruise
vacation into a nightmare. The cruising partygoer who falls overboard, never
to be found again. The single traveler who's sexually assaulted, or the
outbreak
 of norovirus that
sickens thousands.

In fact, from 2002 to 2005, 24 people disappeared from cruise ships,
according to the International Council of Cruise Lines, and 15 cruise lines
reported 178 complaints of sexual assault and four robberies.

Safety concerns aboard cruise ships have recently escalated to Congress,
where cruise ship victims are calling for the government to force the
industry to tighten their security measures.

Since the doctors, nurses and security personnel on cruise ships are all
employed by the cruise industry, the victims say there is a potential
conflict of interest. Some questioned whether the cruise ships' staff was
out to protect the passengers or the financial interests and image of the
cruise industry.

Still, experts say that cruising is still one of the safest ways to travel.

During a five-month period from April to August 2007, there were only 207
serious incidents (including four missing people) on cruise ships that were
reported to the FBI. This represents less than .01 percent of passengers who
cruised during that time.

Of the crimes that did occur, sexual assaults were most common, followed by
assaults with bodily injury and theft of items over $10,000.

Now, when you first get onboard, the cruise ship will call all passengers to
the decks to go over some mandatory, emergency safety precautions. Your
first step to a safe cruise is to put down your rum punch and LISTEN to
these instructions.

 cruise

Cruise ships are like small cities. You should take all the precautions on a
cruise ship that you would in any urban environment.

It's all too easy to let the festive mood sidetrack your more practical
side, but this information will tell you what to do, and where to go, in an
emergency.

But the cruise line won't tell you everything. So, here we've compiled eight
important things that you need to know to keep yourself and your family safe
and sound, while enjoying a pleasant and memorable (in a good way) trip.

1.
Use common sense. Don't throw all caution to the wind just because you're on
a ship. Cruise ships are like small cities, some carrying thousands of
passengers, and while most of them are probably just out for a good time as
you are, it only takes one bad apple to ruin your trip.

Good common sense tips for a cruise ship include not walking down
dark hallways, walking away from disagreements or fights, not inviting
someone into your room that you don't know, and not giving out your personal
information to strangers.

PerfectClean Hand Wipes

If you're planning a cruise vacation, remember that you can minimize your
risk of catching norovirus and other contagious illnesses on board the ship
by using PerfectClean
 Hand
Wipes. They're small enough to carry in your pocket or purse, yet effective
enough to kill contaminants that can't be seen with the naked eye.

You can use them wet or dry to effectively remove germs from your hands,
such as after a handshake or before eating. And because they're made of
highly durable ultramicrofiber cloth, you can use them for 100+ washes
before you need to replace them -- making PerfectClean Hand Wipes incredibly
economical for vacations and everyday use.

2.
Leave valuables at home. Many people have access to your cabin on board,
just as is the case in any hotel
 room. You can keep money,
plane tickets and your passports in your cabin's safe, but be aware that
even these usually have bypass codes that your cabin steward may know.

3.
3. Sexual assault is the most common crime committed on cruise ships. Women,

Calcium Better From Food, Says New Study:
Here are the 26 Top Calcium Food Sources
by www.SixWise.com

You all know that calcium is good for your bones, but when it comes to where
to get your calcium, well, that's another story.

 calcium

Mom was right when she told you to drink your milk for strong bones ...
foods are the BEST way to get enough calcium (though there are many more
foods to get it from than milk).

Visit any health food store or supermarket and you'll see close to an entire
aisle devoted to calcium supplements
. Then there are the claims on food packages like cheese,
ice cream, and even fortified orange juice that THEY are the best sources.

So which is it?

Your Best Source of Calcium is From Your Food

Eating calcium-rich foods is a better method to strengthen your bones than
taking calcium supplements alone, according to researchers from Washington
University in St. Louis.

In the study, women who consumed an average of 830 milligrams (mg) of
calcium per day in the foods they ate had higher bone-mineral densities
(BMDs) than women who took 1,033 mg of calcium in supplement form.

GynoFem Osteoporosis Formula
for Optimal Bone Health

  As the
study found, getting at least 70 percent of your calcium from food, and the
rest in supplement form, resulted in the highest BMDs among the women.

GynoFem is an all natural multi-mineral and vitamin supplement, specifically
formulated with calcium and other minerals to prevent osteoporosis. Why
GynoFem?

*
It is the only supplement combining calcium citrate and magnesium oxide with
vitamin D for absorption and vitamin K for proper bone alignment.

*
This special formula provides 1,200 mg of calcium citrate and 600 mg of
magnesium, the highest recommended dosage, in the correct form, of calcium
and magnesium, as recommended by the National Institute of Health, the
world's foremost authority on osteoporosis.

*
Gynofem contains no animal products, sugars, starch, corn antigens, dairy
products, wheat products, yeast products, fish oil, kelp, artificial colors,
artificial flavors or preservatives.

Interestingly, if you're going to choose one or the other, food appears to
be the winner. However, a combination of both food and supplements may also
be beneficial.

Women who got at least 70 percent of their calcium from food, and took
calcium supplements, had the highest BMDs of all and took in 1,620 mg of
calcium per day.

What Else is Calcium Good For?

About 1.5 percent of your body weight is made up of calcium, 99 percent of
which is in your bones and teeth.

Calcium not only helps the strength and density of your bones, it also
impacts the metabolism of estrogen in your body, which plays a role in your
bone strength.

Calcium also plays a part in many other body functions, including:

*
Blood clotting

*
Nerve conduction

*
Muscle contraction

*
Regulation of enzyme activity

*
Cell membrane function

Interestingly, your body makes sure that there is enough calcium circulating
in your blood to do its part in these physiological activities. If you don't
get enough of this mineral through your diet or supplements, however, it
means that your blood levels of calcium will be low.

 calcium

Spinach is one of the best food sources of calcium there is (and other leafy
greens are a close second).

To compensate, your body will take calcium from your bones to keep your
blood calcium levels where they need to be. Over time, this can weaken your
bones and lead to osteoporosis
 .

This is why it's so important to make sure you and your family are getting
enough of this important mineral.

The Best Food Sources of Calcium

Contrary to popular belief, dairy foods are not the only sources of calcium.
Here are some of the best food sources of calcium out there, including not
only dairy foods but a range of others as well:

1. Spinach

2. Turnip greens

3. Mustard greens

4. Collard
 greens

5. Blackstrap molasses

6. Swiss chard

7. Yogurt

8. Kale

9. Mozzarella cheese

10. Milk (goat's milk and cow's milk)

11. Basil, thyme, dill seed, cinnamon, and peppermint leaves

12. Romaine lettuce

13. Rhubarb

[scifinoir2] The Dangers of "Junk Sleep", and What You Can Do About It

2007-10-03 Thread Reece Jennings

The Dangers of "Junk Sleep", and What You Can Do About It
by www.SixWise.com

Parents of teenagers are likely familiar with the array of media outlets --
iPods, TV, cell phones, stereos, video games and computers -- that many
teens are glued to at all hours of the day.

 junk sleep

When's the last time YOU slept this peacefully? Check out the tips below to
turn junk sleep into good sleep.

The lure of these electronics may be damaging kids' health, causing them to
not get enough sleep, nor enough quality sleep, according to a poll of 1,000
teens conducted by the Sleep Council.

The survey of 12- to 16-year-olds found that:

*
30 percent of teens sleep just four to seven hours a night on school nights,
instead of the recommended eight to nine hours.

*
23 percent say they fall asleep watching TV, listening to music or while
using other electronics more than once a week.

*
19 percent admitted that leaving on the TV or computer impacted the quality
of their sleep.

*
98.5 percent have a phone, music system or TV in their bedroom, and over 65
percent have all three.

*
40 percent say they generally feel tired.

The result, researchers say, is that teens are getting "junk sleep" -- and
it has just as much potential to impact their health as does eating junk
food.

"This is an incredibly worrying trend," says UK sleep expert Dr. Chris
Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre. "What we are seeing is the
emergence of Junk Sleep -- that is sleep that is of neither the length nor
quality that it should be in order to feed the brain with the rest it needs
to perform properly at school."

"I'm staggered that so few teenagers make the link between getting enough
good quality sleep and how they feel during the day. Teenagers need to wake
up to the fact that to feel well, perform well and look well, they need to
do something about their sleep," Dr. Idzikowski says.

Are YOU Getting Junk Sleep?

Let's be honest. Teens are not the only ones guilty of falling asleep with
the TV on, or staying up surfing the Web when they should be getting some
Z's.

Adults, too, are skimping on their much-needed
 sleep.

In fact, according to the 2002 Sleep America poll conducted by the National
Sleep Foundation (NSF), Americans sleep just 6.9 hours per night on average
during the week and just 7.5 hours per night on weekends. In contrast,
before the invention of the light bulb, people slept about 10 hours each
