Will Smith -- The Only Sure Thing At The Box Office

12 February 2009 1:27 AM, PST

Will Smith http://www.imdb.com/name/nm226/ has again emerged as the
film star whose name on the marquee guarantees a movie's success, according
to most analysts. In Forbes magazine's Star Currency survey, Smith was the
only film star to receive a perfect score of 10. Others in the top ten
included: Leonardo http://www.imdb.com/name/nm138/ DiCaprio, Angelina
Jolie http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001401/ , Brad Pitt
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm093/ , Tom Hanks

Blu-ray Prices Drop

12 February 2009 1:27 AM, PST

A sudden and surprising drop in prices of Blu-ray titles has been detected
by several websites, which have noted that some are now comparable to those
of their DVD counterparts. The drop in prices was reportedly prompted by
plummeting store sales of both Blu-ray discs and DVDs even at a time when
prices of Blu-ray players have dropped to below $200. Other analysts have
noted that the lower Blu-ray pricing also comes at a time when consumers may
be looking for cheaper entertainment in general, given the current economic
crisis.

2009-02-14 Thread Bosco Bosco

I just watched it. Anyone else catch it? Thoughts?

Off the top of my head, it's very Whedon. It's well scripted and clearly well
thought out. It's a fine first episode and sets the good tone for the rest of
the series. I thought it pretty much kicked ass.

Re: [scifinoir2] Will Smith -- The Only Sure Thing At The Box Office

2009-02-14 Thread Keith Johnson

Funny. He isn't a guaranteed big draw for me. Among male actors, I'm much more
likely to see a flick with Don Cheadle, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Clive Owen, Viggo
Mortensen, Robert Duvall. Maybe De Niro if it's not Meet the Parents or
Righteous Kill type crap. And I'd actually place Clooney higher up on my list
than Smith. In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw a movie because Smith
was in it. I saw Hancock and I Am Legend because they were scifi, and
Hitch because it was a romantic comedy I could share with my wife. The other
males below, I'll certainly consider--especially Damon and Di Caprio--but
depends on the type of movie they're in. I will say, I do wish Christian Slater
were still doing good work, for he'd certainly be on my list.

For female actors, my list would have to include Judi Dench, Angela Bassett
(keep hoping she finally finds the roles that utilize her massive talent),
Meryl Streep (who's really impressed me with her continually good work as she
gets older), Kimberly Elise (woefully underappreciated actress), Taraji P.
Henson (hard not to be engaged with, even with unintentionally funny stuff like
He don't love me no 'mo'! in Baby Boy), Cate Blanchett, Jodi Foster, Queen
Latifah (good dramatic and comedic actress), Sanaa Lathan.

They ought to list the actors guaranteed to kill a movie, to drive people away.
For me, that would include Adam Sandler (don't get his humour), Pauly Shore
(how does he get work?), Jim Carey (most of his stuff is too manic for me),
David Spade (loved him on TV, can't abide his film work), Mila Jovovich
(horrible movie choices), Kate Hudson (she's sure to star in wretched romantic
comedies that make you gag).

Curious Case was good. I think you will enjoy it. Push is a two hour Marvel
Comic book written by a writer you never heard of but an illustrator you love.
So it looks good, but halfway in you realize you've seen/read this all before.
It ain't the editing, it's the script. It's a rental.

Anyone see the movie Push? I was in Boston when it premiered last week. I
haven't heard much, other than some critics' reviews that say it's a bit of a
jumbled, hyperactive mess (told you I was worried about the too-quick camera
cuts!)
But though a few of us were initially anticipating it, I don't recall any
reviews or discussions here, certainly no praise for the flick. Did anyone see
it? How was it?

Along the same lines, I'm considering checking out Benjamin Buttons and
Coraline. Any thoughts on those?

Clive Owen is one actor on your list below whose films are
consistently watchable but, for whatever reason, they are seldom box
office successes. Viggo Mortensen's The History of Violence is one
of my all-time favorites but it did diddly-squat at the box office.

Your list of female movie stars makes me doubt you as a reliable
narrator. When was the last time Dame Judi Dench headlined a movie?
Heck, when was the last time Angela Bassett headlined a movie? Both
Kimberly Elise and Taraji P. Henson are fine actresses but neither can
open a movie.

Will Smith's accolade was for his ability to consistently fill theater
seats. Let's not compare apples and oranges.

For female actors, my list would have to include Judi Dench, Angela
Bassett (keep hoping she finally finds the roles that utilize her
massive talent), Meryl Streep (who's really impressed me with her
continually good work as she gets older), Kimberly Elise (woefully
underappreciated actress), Taraji P. Henson (hard not to be engaged
with, even with unintentionally funny stuff like He don't love me no
'mo'! in Baby Boy), Cate Blanchett, Jodi Foster, Queen Latifah
(good dramatic and comedic actress), Sanaa Lathan.

They ought to list the actors guaranteed to kill a movie, to drive
people away. For me, that would include Adam Sandler (don't get his

his film work), Mila Jovovich (horrible movie choices), Kate Hudson
(she's sure to star in wretched romantic comedies that make you gag).

Will Smith has again emerged as the film star whose name on the
marquee guarantees a movie's success, according to most analysts. In
Forbes magazine's Star Currency survey, Smith was the only film star
to receive a perfect score of 10. Others in the top ten included:
Leonardo DiCaprio , Angelina Jolie , Brad Pitt , Tom Hanks , George
Clooney , Denzel Washington , Matt Damon , Jack Nicholson , and Julia
Roberts .

Well, like I said, Smith may get others in the seats, but I'm not one of them.
I don't see the problem. The list was of stars who seem to bring a lot of
people in, i'm simply saying Smith doesn't bring *me* in, and then listed the
stars that do. I could care less about whether Judi Dench headlined a movie, I
go to see good actors do good work in good films. If more people quit focusing
on superstars and actually supported talent in all its forms, then more actors
and actresses would be seen for the talent they have.

Exclusive Interview: 'DOLLHOUSE'S' HARRY LENNIX IS A GUARDIAN WITH A
CONSCIENCE

The co-star plays the troubled protector of Eliza Dushku's Echo on the
Joss Whedon series

By ABBIE BERNSTEIN, Contributing Writer

Published 2/12/2009

Whether you’re into films, television or theatre, chances are good you’ve
seen Harry Lennix. On the big screen, Lennix has been a towering, complex
villain in TITUS, the film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s TITUS
ANDRONICUS, and a glowering hero in the second and third MATRIX films. On
stage, he recently performed in the Kennedy Center production of all ten
of August Wilson’s plays. On television, he’s the President of the U.S. on
LITTLE BRITAIN USA, was a regular on COMMANDER IN CHIEF and had recurring
roles on 24 and ER, to name a few notable credits.

Now Lennix costars on Joss Whedon’s new Fox series DOLLHOUSE (which debuts
tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m. after the midseason debut of TERMINATOR: THE
SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES) as Boyd Langdon, the troubled protector of Eliza
Dushku’s character Echo, one of the few figures in the show visibly
disturbed by the concept of continually wiping Echo’s personality and
replacing it with a new one to fit each assignment.

iF MAGAZINE: Would you describe Boyd as conscience-stricken?

HARRY LENNIX: Yes, that’s a very good way of putting it. I definitely
would.

iF: Is it hard to maintain that demeanor?

LENNIX: No. Not in such a morally dubious place, an ethically [uncertain]
place like the Dollhouse. Having a conscience is the only way to get
through the day working for these people.

iF: Do you know how you came to Joss Whedon’s attention?

LENNIX: I went in and auditioned. The role was not offered to me. I think
I was just submitted like everybody else was. I had just finished a series
of plays at the Kennedy Center, and then the weekend that I came back,
there was this audition, and I was lucky enough to get it. I know that
Joss saw Titus and I think he was a fan of TITUS. I know he’s a big
Shakespearean reader and I think he was very taken with [TITUS director]
Julie Taymor’s vision and quite liked that movie, so maybe that had
something to do with it.

iF: Were you ever primarily a Shakespearean actor?

LENNIX: No. I’m trying to think of anybody who’s primarily a Shakespearean
actor these days. I don’t necessarily think anybody can afford it, unless
you can get a season up at Ashland, Oregon or at the Royal Shakespeare
Company. It is required now that you have multi disciplines when it comes
to your craft, so no. I’ve been going back and forth between theatre and
film and television probably since 1992. I probably do now one or two
plays a year and try to do one or two movies a year.

iF: Were you familiar with Joss Whedon’s work before you became involved
with DOLLHOUSE?

LENNIX: I was familiar with FIREFLY, I was familiar with TOY STORY -- I
had a nephew who loved it. I was a little bit familiar with BUFFY THE
VAMPIRE SLAYER, but not as familiar as some of his ardent fans. I’m not
really a sci-fi person. I didn’t know that he was such a virtual icon. I
had no idea that there was a kind of subculture of people who were
devotees of his work.

iF: Eliza Dushku and Dichen Lachman [who plays another Active, or “doll”]
have both said they’re enjoying getting to play different people every
week. Are you at all envious that your character has only one personality?

LENNIX: No, not at all. I think young actors are always looking for a way
to display their talent, because there’s a lot of it, and that certainly
applies to Eliza and Dichen. But I have more fun, really, and it’s more
cohesive for me to have the stability of a character that you get to
explore in depth, as opposed to range.

iF: Just from the pilot, it looks like your character has a lot of back
story.

LENNIX: Yes.

iF: Are we going to get to see that?

LENNIX: I hope so. I hope that the show has the longevity where we really
get to explore the past of a lot of other characters. I think we’re
establishing who we are as these characters, and then if we have a second
season, we will get to go back into what the past was that led them to
this present.

iF: Do you have any idea what you’d like your character’s back story to be?

LENNIX: I have my own story [laughs]. I wouldn’t want to say it, because
if it turns out in the course of the series that I’m way wrong, then I
don’t want to be [quoted about it].

iF: And if you’re right, they’ll go, You spoilered! Do you have a
favorite aspect of Boyd’s character?

LENNIX: The fact that I get to have action scenes is something I’m really
excited about. Before, I never really had a chance to have fights and beat
up people and get beaten up, shoot people, get shot, so it’s really a lot
of fun and it’s a great way to expand an aspect of my career which I
wasn’t aware how much I missed [as in] never experienced, missed as in
felt the absence of. I never
