Brent, I haven't heard much about this movie, and I don't know if that's a

Anthony Mackie on Working With Hugh Jackman, Robots in Real Steel

At last night's launch of Marc Ecko Cut Sew's new ad campaign, featuring
 [ http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2010/08/lohan_1.html ]a hologram of
Lindsay Lohan, longtime Ecko customer Anthony Mackie stayed far away from
the computer stations demoing digital Lindsay, preferring to flirt with
his many lady admirers in the VIP section. He's been on a roll since The
Hurt Locker's Oscar run made him a household name, so Vulture took this
opportunity grill him about reading suggestions for Lohan in rehab and his
 spate of new projects.

Have you tried playing with the Lindsay Lohan hologram yet?
I haven't. I feel like something about virtual Lindsay Lohan turns me on
too much to play with it in front of people.

You can give her commands and make her do stuff. What would you have her
 do?
I would have her tell me what I look good in. Guys want to know what looks
good to women, so you want a woman who you think is hot to tell you what
you look good in. I would like to be able to go on the site and have her
sit there and say, You look good in that.

The webcam films her and then projects her into your world.
I don't want her in my world! I don't want her, like, in my house.

She's in rehab now. Got any reading suggestions for her?
I'm on a big David McCullough kick. I'm reading The Johnstown Flood and
1776. I'm a big history buff. So I'd just tell her to pick up some really
good history books and check out mistakes other people have made. Every
time I think I've done something stupid, I read about something like the
Johnstown Flood and I'm like, You know what? I'm not so bad.

You're doing the sci-fi movie Real Steel with Hugh Jackman. You're a
 promoter of robot boxers?
I'm the Don King of the future. It's an amazing movie. Shawn Levy is an
amazing director. And Hugh is honestly one of the coolest cats in the
business. All of my scenes are with him. He is basically a robot boxing
[trainer] and I am the promoter. So he has to come to me to get his fights
 on.

Are there actual robots or is it CGI?
They're there! They built eight-foot-tall robots! Yes. You're standing
there and a big-ass robot comes by. They got the guy who did all the
robots for Jurassic Park and Jaws and all these crazy movies and got him
 to build mechanical eight-foot-tall robots.

What do you do with the robots?
I run away from them! No, basically I introduce the robots; I promote the
robots; I speak with robots who want to fight other robots. I'm the Don
 King of it all.

Do you have Don King's hair?
No, I don't. There are two hairstyles you will never find another man
wearing: Don King's and Al Sharpton's. They're done. They're done.

Evangeline Lilly retired from acting and then [

 http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/05/evangeline_lilly_unretires.html
]unretired eight days later to do this movie. Did you talk about it?
No, but that's everyone's goal, to pull an Anthony Hopkins: You know
what? I'm never gonna do this again.

After that, you're playing Buddy Bolden, the Cornet King of New Orleans
and the guy people think started jazz, and then track star Jesse Owens.
Are those skills you possess already?
You bet. I run three miles a day and I've been playing trumpet since
middle school. I think that's why they cast me. I can't talk about Jesse
Owens, but we finished filming Bolden two weeks ago.

You play your own trumpet music?
No, no, no. Wynton Marsalis played all the music. I just act the fuck out
 of it.

I always get annoyed when people pretend to play musical instruments in
 movies.
Well, as an actor, don't you think I get annoyed when musicians pretend to
 act? Right back 'atcha.

How do you feel about all the rappers getting into acting?
 A. [Rolls eyes, evading question.] I played the trumpet some. By the
end of the movie, I got my chops back up to where I could sort of make it
work. I learned all the music. Delfeayo Marsalis was my musical coach, so
he made sure everything I did was on point, that I had the right fingering
and stuff. So I think, and everyone else thinks it looks like I'm playing
 the music.

Why are you taking so many roles based on real people?
Because those are the best stories! If someone came to me and said, We
want you to play Spider-Man, I'd say, Hell yeah! But I'd have to get
them to change the name to Brotha-man. That's who I'd be.

Lucas Announces Star Wars Blu-ray

The Star Wars Blu-ray release is now as official as it can be, as none other
than George Lucas announced the films were coming to the format. I wish I
could
say it's coming out this year, but it's coming out next year, Lucas said to
the
packed audience at the Main Event at Star Wars Celebration V today, which was
moderated by Jon Stewart.

Speaking about what will be included, Lucas said, They'll be different kinds
of
additional material, adding, I think you've seen enough behind the scenes
[material] for a lifetime. There's some really good material that will be
included in there, [including] more deleted scenes that you haven't seen yet.
Lucas said these newly released scenes would be kept separate from the film
itself.

In a surprise appearance, Mark Hamill then joined Lucas and Stewart on stage,
to
introduce one of the new deleted scenes, which he said was his original
entrance in Return of the Jedi. Hamill noted the scene was short, but that it
was for the UPFs in the audience – the ultra passionate fans.

We were then shown the scene, which would have taken place after Darth Vader
arrives on the second Death Star at the beginning of Return of the Jedi. We see
Vader walking down a corridor and into an elevator on the Death Star. We then
cut to Vader inside his medication chamber, a la Empire Strikes Back. As Vader
sits there, the camera moves into a close-up and we hear him reaching out with
the Force. Luke. Luke. Join me in the dark side of the Force. My son. It is
the
only way.

As Vader continues to repeat Luke's name, we cut to a tight close-up of Luke,
insinuating he is hearing his father's voice. it's a very ominous shot of Luke,
who is wearing his cloak and hood, with the shadows from the hood blocking out
his eyes completely - in line with how Darth Sideous' face is mostly hidden. As
Vader's voice fades away, the camera pans down to Luke's hands, and we see that
he is using a tool to complete work on his new lightsaber. Satisfied, he puts
the tool down and holds the lightsaber hilt up, igniting it – in what would
have
been the first reveal of the green blade.

We cut to a shot from the side and see Luke is sitting inside a cave on
Tatooine, with C-3P0 standing outside, waiting for him – no doubt to receive
his
orders to head to Jabba the Hutt.

That was it for the scene, but the crowd erupted in cheers at what was indeed a
very cool new moment, from films we are all quite familiar with.

The panel ended with one more surprise guest – Carrie Fisher. Alas, there were
no other deleted scenes shown to us today, but Fisher cracked to Lucas, Did
you
put the nude scenes back in? She then turned to the audience and deadpanned,
There was a huge me and Jabba porn scene. That's what got me into drugs.

No further details were given on the Blu-rays as yet, which leave plenty to
speculate about. It's safe to say from the Return of the Jedi scene being shown
that this release will include all of the original trilogy, but while it seems
likely the answer is yes, there was nothing definitive stated about the
prequels
being released simultaneously. And no, we didn't get any info on whether the
original, pre-Special Edition versions of the films will be part of this set as
well.

Suffice to say though, there will be more news to come in the months ahead, so
keep checking IGN for more on the Star Wars Blu-ray release!

Update: About five minutes after I published this story, I was handed
Lucasfilm's official press release for the Blu-rays. It confirms that all six
movies are being released on Blu-ray and that the set is coming out Fall 2011 -
so don't line up just yet! We're also told it will include, documentaries,
vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and
never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives.

Star Wars fans should also check out my article about the new Empire Strikes
Back documentary that debuted at Celebration [Click Here!] , that I theorize
could possibly be part of the Blu-ray release.

Martin Advanced Development Projects is making perhaps the first realistic
tests of a hybrid airship–a concept that dates back many decades but that is
just now being tried at a significant scale. The Skunk Works had secretly
built the craft and hoped for a quiet first flight at its Palmdale, Calif.,
facility, but a few passers-by noticed the strange object in the sky. The
Defense Dept. is showing interest in two categories of airships–those that
can carry large cargo at low altitude, exemplified by the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (Darpa) Walrus program, and those that can operate
in high-altitude low-wind conditions and remain on station for long periods
of time. The configuration of the Skunks Works ship indicates it is the
former–a hybrid heavy-load carrier. The interest is across the services and
the notional applications are diverse, ranging from logistics–delivery of an
integrated fighting unit within theater, for example–to sensor,
communications and even laser-weapon relay platforms. But airships aren’t
there yet. Major unresolved issues could derail the airship dream, such as
their traditional delicate ground handling, and possibly prohibitive
economics and vulnerability. These issues have been debated endlessly on
paper, and now Lockheed Martin, a prime airship proponent, is investing to
seek real answers.

Recentlys! U.S. Army LEMV Program ordered this 21-day endurance, 20K
Altitude Hybrid LTA for AFPAK:

https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportuni…https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunitymode=formid=8a9576adda671991e001a322c98a6a44tab=coretabmode=listcck=1au=ck=

A hybrid airship derives most of its lift by being filled with a
lighter-than-air gas such as helium. Overall, it is heavier than air and
gains the final 20% or so of lift by flying like an aircraft, but with slow
takeoff and landing speeds that allow operations from short unprepared
strips. The Skunk Works made the first flight of its “P-791″ testbed on Jan.
31 at its facility on the Palmdale Air Force Plant 42 airport. The manned
flight was about a 5-min. circuit around the airport in the morning and
appeared to be successful. The company did not announce or want to discuss
the flight. The P-791 is not part of a government contract, but rather an
independent research and development project by the Skunk Works to better
understand airship capabilities and technologies, such as materials, a
company official says. However, it may also be a quarter-scale prototype of
a heavy-lifter.

TO GAIN MORE SPAN TO ACT LIKE a wing, the P-791 is three pressurized lobes
joined together. An observer of the first flight says it was about the size
of three Fuji blimps blended together. The Fuji blimp, a Skyship 600 model,
is 206 ft. long. That suggests the P-791 would have a gross lift of roughly
3-5 tons. The observer saw the craft performing very tight 360-deg. turns
while taxiing. It made a brief takeoff roll, climbed to a low altitude, made
a few banks–including a long sweeping turn–then came back and landed. The
landing approach had a nose-down body attitude that levelled for the flare.
The flight was very smooth, the observer says. The craft was flown by P-791
Chief Test Pilot Eric P. Hansen. The speed of the testbed was estimated at
about 20 kt. A full-scale version would be able to go much faster, over 100
kt. Lockheed Martin has long proposed a large transport airship, at one time
called the Aerocraft, which was halted around 2000 (AWST Feb. 22, 1999, p.
26). That design was about 800 ft. long and was to carry 1-1.2 million lb.
at 125 kt. The Skunk Works was one of two contractors to receive one-year,
$3-million Darpa contracts in August 2005 to study Walrus. The second Walrus
phase would be a three-year demonstration effort.

appeared to be successful.

Lucas Announces Star Wars Blu-ray

The Star Wars Blu-ray release is now as official as it can be, as none other
than George Lucas
announced the films were coming to the format. I wish I could say it's
coming out this year, but it's coming out next year, Lucas said to the
packed audience at the Main Event at Star Wars Celebration V today,
which was moderated by Jon Stewart.

Speaking about what will be included, Lucas said, They'll be different
kinds of additional material, adding, I think you've seen enough
behind the scenes [material] for a lifetime. There's some really good
material that will be included in there, [including] more deleted scenes
that you haven't seen yet. Lucas said these newly released scenes
would be kept separate from the film itself.

In a surprise appearance, Mark Hamill
then joined Lucas and Stewart on stage, to introduce one of the new
deleted scenes, which he said was his original entrance in Return of the
Jedi. Hamill noted the scene was short, but that it was for the UPFs in the
audience – the ultra passionate fans.

We were then shown the scene, which would have taken place after Darth Vader
arrives on the second Death Star at the beginning of Return of the Jedi.
We see Vader walking down a corridor and into an elevator on the Death
Star. We then cut to Vader inside his medication chamber, a la Empire Strikes
Back.
As Vader sits there, the camera moves into a close-up and we hear him
reaching out with the Force. Luke. Luke. Join me in the dark side of
the Force. My son. It is the only way.

As Vader continues to repeat Luke's name, we cut to a tight close-up of
Luke, insinuating he is hearing his father's voice. it's a very ominous
shot of Luke, who is wearing his cloak and hood, with the shadows from
the hood blocking out his eyes completely - in line with how Darth
Sideous' face is mostly hidden. As Vader's voice fades away, the camera
pans down to Luke's hands, and we see that he is using a tool to
complete work on his new lightsaber. Satisfied, he puts the tool down
and holds the lightsaber hilt up, igniting it – in what would have been
the first reveal of the green blade.

We cut to a shot from the side and see Luke is sitting inside a cave on
Tatooine, with C-3P0 standing outside, waiting for him – no doubt to
receive his orders to head to Jabba the Hutt.

That
was it for the scene, but the crowd erupted in cheers at what was
indeed a very cool new moment, from films we are all quite familiar
with.

The panel ended with one more surprise guest – Carrie Fisher.
Alas, there were no other deleted scenes shown to us today, but Fisher
cracked to Lucas, Did you put the nude scenes back in? She then turned
to the audience and deadpanned, There was a huge me and Jabba porn
scene. That's what got me into drugs.

No further details were given on the Blu-rays as yet, which leave plenty to
speculate about. It's safe to say from the Return of the Jedi
scene being shown that this release will include all of the original
trilogy, but while it seems likely the answer is yes, there was nothing
definitive stated about the prequels being released simultaneously. And
no, we didn't get any info on whether the original, pre-Special Edition
versions of the films will be part of this set as well.

Suffice to say though, there will be more news to come in the months ahead, so
keep checking IGN for more on the Star Wars Blu-ray release!

Update: About five minutes after I published this story, I was
handed Lucasfilm's official press release for the Blu-rays. It confirms
that all six movies are being released on Blu-ray and that the set is
coming out Fall 2011 - so don't line up just yet! We're also told it
will

A hybrid airship derives most of its lift by being filled with a
lighter-than-air gas such as helium. Overall, it is heavier than air and
gains the final 20% or so of lift by flying like an aircraft, but with slow
takeoff and landing speeds that allow operations from short unprepared
strips. The Skunk Works made the first flight of its “P-791″ testbed on Jan.
31 at its facility on the Palmdale Air Force Plant 42 airport. The manned

[scifinoir2] Rise Shine: 10 Awesome Levitating Objects for the Home

Rise Shine: 10 Awesome Levitating Objects for the Home

Levitating objects are pretty fascinating, no question. But how often do
you get to float stuff around, Harry Potter-style, in your own house? These
objects are among the coolest in home levitation technology – and for most
of them, you don’t even need a magic wand.

CreaLev http://www.crealev.com/portfolio/los2/, a Dutch company, has
developed levitation technology for use in consumer projects like these
floating lamps. The technology was licensed to Los
Conceptshttp://www.losconcepts.com/,
which has developed two lines of lamps with floating parts. They debuted at
the 2007 Dutch Design Week http://www.mocoloco.com/archives/004702.php to
oohs and aahs from everyone who saw them. CreaLev doesn’t give details about
how their levitation concept works, but it’s likely based on magnets.

As far as sort-of useless desk accessories go, the IFO
3000http://scientificsonline.com/product.asp?pn=3036982bhcd2=1256564484is
as good as it gets. The base unit will levitate a number of small
objects, sold separately as “accessories” for the base. From the ubiquitous
levitating globe to a clock, picture frame and color-changing sphere, the
add-ons are pretty impressive. The magnetic field keeps the floating object
spinning continuously; when it senses that the spinning is slowing down, it
gives a gentle push to start it up again. At about $100 (including the
globe) and accessories being available separately at $25 each, it’s
affordable enough to admire up-close, at home.

[image: levitron revolution series levitating objects]

The
Levitronhttp://fascinations.com/unique-toys-gifts/levitron-revolution-series.htmis
even more versatile than the above object floater; you can float
pretty
much any object four ounces or under in its magnetic field. The base even
has a spotlight feature so you can light up from below whatever wacky thing
you deem worthy of floating. You have to put your item into a special bowl
to make it float, but we’re sure your stuffed animal or that rad model
airplane you made in high school won’t mind.

[image: axon racing levitating rc car]

We’re big fans of RC cars, but we’ve never *ever* wanted one this badly
before. The Axon levitating
http://www.techpin.com/rc-car-action/radio-controlled car takes
those pesky wheels out of the equation and brings
you pure, unadulterated speed: 50 MPH, to be precise. The shell is made of
the same plastic used by both NASA and Nascar, so you know it’s super-tough.
The car hovers on a cushion of air from two super-powered fans on its
bottom. Sure, it’ll run you $250, but isn’t your ever-lasting joy worth at
least that much?

We’re going to go out on a limb here and say this is the coolest gadget
you’ll see all day. *It’s a magic freaking levitation wand.* Sure, it’ll
only levitate a few mylar shapes, but you have to admit that’s still pretty
awesome. It works with static electricity from the mini Van de Graaff
generator inside. Available at the always-fabulous Think
Geekhttp://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/science/af4c/for $27.

[image: levitating salt and pepper shakers]

These levitating salt and pepper
shakershttp://www.thedesignblog.org/entry/levitating-salt-and-pepper-shakers-by-son-mocci/,
from Italian designer Son Mocci, could make any dinner table look like a
space-age dining hall. The shakers rest on little floating platforms and
look like fluffy clouds. The base contains Neodymium magnets to keep the
shakers afloat.

Speaking of fluffy clouds, this cloud sofa concept from D.K.
Weihttp://kootouch.blogspot.com/2009/03/magnetic-floating-sofa-kootouch.htmllooks
like the most comfortable couch ever. It is, sadly, only a concept,
but David Koo, part of the design teams, hopes that it will be produced at
some point. Powerful magnets in the base would keep the cloud portion aloft.
The concept took honorable mention in a design contest sponsored by Yanko
Design.

This 200-pound levitating office chair seems more like a throne than the
comfy padded things we’re used to seeing in offices. It works like a
hovercraft and can easily move around the room. From designer Marijn van der
Poll http://www.marijnvanderpoll.com/, the “Chairman” looks like a very
cool product, but we can’t imagine seeing it in stores anytime soon.

British company Hoverit http://www.hoverit.co.uk/profile.html has one of
the greatest hovering furniture designs ever. And unlike the other hovering
furniture we’ve seen, this one is actually available to purchase. The
Hoverit can be used indoors or outdoors and is available in a few different
colors. Since some people believe that magnets improve health and others
believe that long exposure to magnetic fields can damage health, this
awesome lounger will probably be surrounded by some

We’d all be happier doing what we truly love. Artist Eric Joyner has taken
the concept of sticking with your favorite things and made a successful art

rather be a gallery artist, and the only rule he set for himself was to pain
only things he likes.

The things Joyner chose to focus on were robots and doughnuts. This may

Don’t we all have big dreams when we buy a lottery ticket? Even if we don’t
truly believe it will be the big winner that will change our lives, we hold
out some amount of hope that we’ll get lucky. But after the drawing, when
the tickets turn out to be nothing more than useless slips of paper, our
hopes and dreams cease to be pinned to them in any way. They become little
more than garbage, mindlessly tossed into the trash can. A duo of graduates
from the Rhode Island http://weburbanist.com/privateislands School of
Design is taking those discarded dreams and turning them into life-size
pieces of recycled art http://ghostofadream.com/index.html.

The team is called Ghost of a Dream, and that’s exactly what they depict in
their found object sculptures. They use old lottery tickets and romance
novel covers to create some truly beautiful art objects that give new
perspective to the permanence of the lottery tickets themselves and the
impermanence of the hope they represent.

From a small remote-control boat to a huge mock Hummer, the team creates a
variety of compelling objects. Their body of work includes “Dream Home,”
which features a pretend home made of $70,000 worth of lottery tickets,
“Dream Car http://weburbanist.com/transportation,” made of $39,000 worth
of discarded tickets, and “Dream Vacation,” built from $29,000 of the little
paper slips.

When we buy a lottery ticket, we often imagine what we’ll buy with the
potential winnings. The team behind Ghost of a Dream, Adam Eckstrom and
Lauren Was, make those dreams a surreality by using the tickets themselves
to actually construct the things we dream of.

We’d all be happier doing what we truly love. Artist Eric Joyner has taken
the concept of sticking with your favorite things and made a successful art
career out of it. While doing commercial art, Joyner decided that he would
rather be a gallery artist, and the only rule he set for himself was to pain
 only things he likes.

The things Joyner chose to focus on were robots and doughnuts. This may
seem like an odd pair of items, but really – who doesn’t love robots and
doughnuts? After using Photoshop to put his ideas together, Joyner then
paints his creations on wood panels, giving them rich colors and a warm
 sense of depth.

The grand absurdity of most of the robot scenes is just so delicious that
we can almost taste the sweet sprinkles on those doughnuts. Check out all of
Joyner’s work – including some fabulous space travel-inspired pieces – at the
 artist’s website http://www.ericjoyner.com/default.aspx.

[scifinoir2] Perplexing Pairs: 2 Cell Phones With Unlikely Superpowers

2010-08-15 Thread Mr. Worf
Perplexing Pairs: 2 Cell Phones With Unlikely Superpowers

Call us old-fashioned, but we expect our cell phones to do calls, texting,
maybe some music and some light web browsing. We do not expect our phones to
stave off a 5 o’clock shadow or metabolize sugary drinks. But apparently
that’s why we’re not designing the next generation of cell phones.

This is either the best idea ever or the worst idea ever. We honestly can’t
decide. The razor cell phone is being introduced in China and evidently it’s
no big deal to the country that already has all kinds of crazy cell phone
functions and gadgets. But just as baffling as the unholy union of an
electric razor and a cell phone is the fact that David Beckham is in the ad.
Is pro soccer really paying that poorly these days? Read a detailed review
of the razor phone (in Japanese) at cNet
Japanhttp://japan.cnet.com/column/mobileyamane/story/0,3800089004,20405033,00.htm
.

Another bizarre Chinese cell phone that hasn’t quite made it to market yet
is this Coke-powered Nokia-branded concept by designer Daizi
Zhenghttp://www.daizizheng.com/projects.htm.
The phone holds a small amount of sugary carbonated drink in a chamber on
the back, and some special cell phone magic takes place to convert enzymes
from the carbohydrates to electricity. If it sounds familiar, that’s because
it’s sort of what our own bodies do to get energy from carbohydrates. The
idea is that the “bio battery” would hold a charge longer than a traditional
battery and be fully biodegradable. Although it’s weird (and we bet the
chamber would get really disgusting) we have to admit that a gadget modeled
after the human body’s energy system is pretty creative.

Somehow, Mr Worf, I manage to block all references to M$ out of available
memory until the mention of them comes up...

I said that about L-M because they've been on the Guv'mint dole for close to
60 years now. About every five years or so, there's a rumbling that L-M's
main facility in Marietta (other side of the Metro from me) is going to be
scaled back or shut down outright because of a lack of contracts, at which
time the check comes from inside the Beltway. Once, according to a friend
who works for a Navy contractor, L-M once got a contract that said, in so
many words, Just make something for us. (This was during the heady days of
the Bush 41 Admin.)

TO GAIN MORE SPAN TO ACT LIKE a wing, the P-791 is three pressurized
lobes joined together. An observer of the first flight says it was about the
size of three Fuji blimps blended together. The Fuji blimp, a Skyship 600
model, is 206 ft. long. That suggests the P-791 would have a gross lift of
roughly 3-5 tons. The observer saw the craft

The team is called Ghost of a Dream, and that’s exactly what they depict
in their found object sculptures.

Insert Personality: Robot Head + Human Consciousness =

The quest for artificial intelligence has led mankind to some pretty strange
places, but the Terasem Movement
http://www.terasemcentral.org/index.htmlhas just taken it to a
decidedly creepy new level. The non-profit agency is
dedicated to educating the public about the necessity of extending life
through cyber-consciousness. In other words, they believe that the human
essence can be extended beyond life with the use of robots.

They created this vaguely creepy robot called Bina48. The bot is the first
privately-funded artificial intelligence robot of its type, and it’s modeled
on a real woman named Bina Rothblatt. The real Bina spent many hours loading
information into the head of Bina48, giving “her” a personality and the
ability to converse with visitors. The above video documents Bina48′s
interview with a New York Times reporter; it’s apparent that the technology
can use a little refinement before we can trust it to store our
consciousness after we die. But if its heartbreaking desires to have its own
life, work in the garden and take over the world are any indication, we’d
better start welcoming our new artificially intelligent overlords now.

doughnuts? After using Photoshop to put his ideas together, Joyner then
paints his creations on wood panels, giving them rich colors and a warm
 sense of depth.

The grand absurdity of most of the robot scenes is just so delicious
that we can almost taste the sweet sprinkles on those doughnuts. Check out

Perplexing Pairs: 2 Cell Phones With Unlikely Superpowers

Call us old-fashioned, but we expect our cell phones to do calls,
texting, maybe some music and some light web browsing. We do not expect our
phones to stave off a 5 o’clock shadow or metabolize sugary drinks. But
apparently that’s why we’re not designing the next generation of cell
 phones.

[scifinoir2] Digital future shakes comic fans

2010-08-15 Thread Kelwyn
http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jul/23/business/la-fi-ct-digital-comics-20100723

Digital comics: Nemesis or sidekick to comic book culture?

It's a book! It's a cartoon! It's ... digital comics!

Technology, which has already upended the music, television and movie
businesses, is now gripping the comic book world. Publishers are unleashing a
torrent of digital comic books across smart phones, tablet devices, game
consoles and digital book readers, portending major changes in how comics are
made and marketed.

These new comics — many of which are being showcased this week at Comic-Con
International in San Diego — in some cases come with choreographed
presentations that zoom or pan across panels, full-color animated characters,
audio from professional voice actors, heart-thumping soundtracks and even the
ability for readers to leave comments on the pages.

With change come its twin companions: angst and exhilaration.

Traditionalists argue that experiments with animation and sound effects
threaten to undermine the aesthetic foundation of comics and wipe out comic
book stores already struggling to stay afloat — in other words, to do what the
iPod and iTunes did to record shops.

The industry is in a difficult spot, said Scott McCloud, author of
Reinventing Comics and several other books on comics as a medium. It has to
rethink its entire business model while it's rethinking the art form.

Marvel Entertainment, which has been offering unlimited access to more than
8,000 digital comic books via PCs for $10 a month, released an iPad application
in April through which readers can browse more than 500 titles. DC Comics came
out with its own iTunes app in June, starting with 200 titles and adding close
to 50 titles a week.

Lucas Announces Star Wars Blu-ray

The Star Wars Blu-ray release is now as official as it can be, as none other
than George Lucas announced the films were coming to the format. I wish I
could say it's coming out this year, but it's coming out next year, Lucas said
to the packed audience at the Main Event at Star Wars Celebration V today,
which was moderated by Jon Stewart .

Speaking about what will be included, Lucas said, They'll be different kinds
of additional material, adding, I think you've seen enough behind the scenes
[material] for a lifetime. There's some really good material that will be
included in there, [including] more deleted scenes that you haven't seen yet.
Lucas said these newly released scenes would be kept separate from the film
itself.

In a surprise appearance, Mark Hamill then joined Lucas and Stewart on stage,
to introduce one of the new deleted scenes, which he said was his original
entrance in Return of the Jedi . Hamill noted the scene was short, but that it
was for the UPFs in the audience – the ultra passionate fans.

We were then shown the scene, which would have taken place after Darth Vader
arrives on the second Death Star at the beginning of Return of the Jedi . We
see Vader walking down a corridor and into an elevator on the Death Star. We
then cut to Vader inside his medication chamber, a la Empire Strikes Back . As
Vader sits there, the camera moves into a close-up and we hear him reaching out
with the Force. Luke. Luke. Join me in the dark side of the Force. My son. It
is the only way.

Satisfied, he puts
the tool down and holds the lightsaber hilt up, igniting it – in what would
have been the first reveal of the green blade.

We cut to a shot from the side and see Luke is sitting inside a cave on
Tatooine, with C-3P0 standing outside, waiting for him – no doubt to receive
his orders to head to Jabba the Hutt.

That was it for the scene, but the crowd erupted in cheers at what was indeed a
very cool new moment, from films we are all quite familiar with.

The panel ended with one more surprise guest – Carrie Fisher . Alas, there were
no other deleted scenes shown to us today, but Fisher cracked to Lucas, Did
you put the nude scenes back in? She then turned to the audience and
deadpanned, There was a huge me and Jabba porn scene. That's what got me into
drugs.

No further details were given on the Blu-rays as yet, which leave plenty to
speculate about. It's safe to say from the Return of the Jedi scene being shown
that this release will include all of the original trilogy, but while it seems
likely the answer is yes, there was nothing definitive stated about the
prequels being released simultaneously. And no, we didn't get any info on
whether the original, pre-Special Edition versions of the films will be part of
this set as well.

Back documentary that debuted at Celebration [Click Here!] , that I theorize
could possibly be part of the Blu-ray

[scifinoir2] Movies that aren't in 3-D but should be

2010-08-15 Thread Kelwyn
Since the success of Avatar there have been a plethora of 3-D movies - many
of which had no business being 3-D movies.

This brought up the question of 2-D movies that should have been 3-D movies.

For instance: Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World is a 2-D movie that would probably
be enhanced by 3-D effects.

Are there any others?

Satisfied, he puts
the tool down and holds the lightsaber hilt up, igniting it – in what would
have been the first reveal of the green blade.

We're also told it will include,

We'd all be happier doing what we truly love. Artist Eric Joyner has
taken the concept of sticking with your favorite things and made a
successful art career out of it. While doing commercial art, Joyner
 decided
that he would rather be a gallery artist, and the only rule he set
 for

The things Joyner chose to focus on were robots and doughnuts. This

I agree. It cosst a *lot* of time and money to move to a new OS. On the
corporate side, you can be talking hundreds or thousands of computers,
requiring major rollout/upgrade projects. I know 'cause I spent ten years
doing it for my last permanent job, from NT 4.0 and OS/2 to Win2003 and XP.
There's a lot of software testing that must take place in the corporate
world to ensure that critical software functions on new OS's. There's often
a major expense in upgrading hardware to accommodate the new OS' greater
needs for RAM, CPU power, and hard drive space. For the home user, there's
the money to buy a new OS, the always scary prospect of upgrading a
  machine's OS --somethign I never do, preferring a wipe/new install--and the
time and effort needed to learn about using and troubleshooting a new OS at
home. And again, if the home user has a PC that's as relatively young as
five years old, it may be fine for the old OS, but must be upgraded or
replaced to give the most r obust experience on the new OS.
I've been in IT for over a decade, and learning this stuff is what I have
to do, but I admit even my eyes glaze over and my head throbs sometimes at
trying to learn the intricacies of a new OS. There are people who'd be
perfectly happy using XP five years from now. I say let 'em, 'cause at
least they're still sticking with Microsoft instead of bolting to Apple or
  Linux.

Digital comics: Nemesis or sidekick to comic book culture?

 It's a book! It's a cartoon! It's ... digital comics!

Technology, which has already upended the music, television and movie
businesses, is now gripping the comic book world. Publishers are unleashing
a torrent of digital comic books across smart phones, tablet devices, game
consoles and digital book readers, portending major changes in how comics
 are made and marketed.

These new comics — many of which are being showcased this week at Comic-Con
International in San Diego — in some cases come with choreographed
presentations that zoom or pan across panels, full-color animated
characters, audio from professional voice actors, heart-thumping soundtracks
and even the ability for readers to leave comments on the pages.

With change come its twin companions: angst and exhilaration.

Traditionalists argue that experiments with animation and sound effects
threaten to undermine the aesthetic foundation of comics and wipe out comic
book stores already struggling to stay afloat — in other words, to do what
the iPod and iTunes did to record shops.

The industry is in a difficult spot, said Scott McCloud, author of
Reinventing Comics and several other books on comics as a medium. It has
to rethink its entire business model while it's rethinking the art form.

Marvel Entertainment, which has been offering unlimited access to more than
8,000 digital comic books via PCs for $10 a month, released an iPad
application in April through which readers can browse more than 500 titles.
DC Comics came out with its own iTunes app in June, starting with 200 titles
and adding close to 50 titles a week.

I believe it. Most of the technology that we have right now is above and
beyond the rest of the world (excluding Israel, China, UK, and a couple of
others) There isn't any real reason to spend a huge amount of money building
new planes and support craft yet when the stuff we have isn't at the end of
its lifespan yet.

[scifinoir2] Come On, See the Noise: Airport Noise Converted to Power

2010-08-15 Thread Mr. Worf
Come On, See the Noise: Airport Noise Converted to Power

Anyone who’s been to an airport knows that airports are some of the
noisiest places on Earth. The constant noise of the airplanes flying
overhead, taxiing, taking off and landing can be almost deafening – but some
good might one day come of it. This concept – the Green Noise
http://www.yankodesign.com/2010/01/22/noise-is-cool-for-power/converter –
from designer Hung-Uei Jou would harvest noise from airports to provide the
power for runway lights.

Runway lights, of course, use a large amount of electricity since they need
to be left on for long periods of time. Finding an alternative source of
energy to lighten the electricity load on the grid would not only save
money, but help to cut down on pollution from power plants. A small change,
maybe, but a positive one nonetheless. Depending on the technical aspect, it
may be possible to use this type of technology in other noisy places: city
centers, sporting events, or even nightclubs.

There aren’t any technical details about how the design would work, but it’s
possible that the round pods on the ground would operate on
piezoelectricity. When the sound waves vibrate the collection pods, the
interior materials would produce small amounts of electricity. The tripod
that supports the collection unit lifts it off of the ground enough to make
it simple for airport techs to perform maintenance on the units and change
the lights when they burn out. A screen on the side of each unit gives vital
information about the unit’s status, such as how much of a charge it has
remaining.

However, it may also be a quarter-scale prototype of a heavy-lifter.

TO GAIN MORE SPAN TO ACT LIKE a wing, the P-791 is three pressurized lobes
joined together. An observer of the first flight says it was about the size of
three Fuji blimps blended together. The Fuji blimp, a Skyship 600 model, is 206
ft. long. That suggests the P-791 would have a gross lift of roughly 3-5 tons.
The observer saw the craft performing very tight 360-deg. turns while taxiing.
It made a brief takeoff roll, climbed to a low altitude, made a few
banks–including a long sweeping turn–then came back and landed. The landing
approach had a nose-down body attitude that levelled for the flare. The flight
was very smooth, the observer says. The craft was flown by P-791 Chief Test
Pilot Eric P. Hansen. The speed of the testbed was estimated at about 20 kt. A
full-scale version would be able to go much faster, over 100 kt. Lockheed
Martin has long proposed a large transport airship, at one time called the
Aerocraft, which was halted around 2000 (AWST Feb. 22, 1999, p. 26). That
design was about 800 ft. long and was to carry 1-1.2 million lb. at 125 kt. The
Skunk Works was one of two contractors to receive one-year, $3-million Darpa
contracts in August 2005 to study Walrus. The second Walrus phase would be a
three-year demonstration effort.

This deleted scene with Vader reaching out to Luke seems pretty cool. It sounds
as if it has more of the grim feeling of The Empire Strikes Back. I don't
have a Blu-Ray player yet, but not sure I'd buy this even if I did. I have at
least two versions Lucas has released over the years--and I'm not even an
ardent fan. I wonder how many different versions UPF's (Ultra Passionate Fans)
might have?

*
http://bluray.ign.com/articles/111/1112481p1.html

Satisfied, he puts
the tool down and holds the lightsaber hilt up, igniting it – in what would
have been the first reveal of the green blade.

Suffice to say though, there will be more news to come in the months ahead, so

I'm curious.  I have a really strong reaction to every film, post empire. The
prequels are particularly hard for me because I had been waiting for that
story to be told from the minute I became aware that it would be. I dont know
exactly when it was but sometime around 12 or 13 probably after seeing Empire
but before Jedi I began to hear talk about Lucas telling the backstory at some
point. I had waited my entire life, multiple decades, to experience the Anakin
to Vader story. Sometime around the moment JarJar Binks appeared on screen, I
realized I was gonna get burned. Somehow, I just couldnt let go, like a
mentally debilitated rubbernecker at a fenderbender, I watched the entire train
wreck unfold. Nothing has ever been as artistically devastating or
disappointing. What Lucas did to his legacy is criminal. What he did to the
fans is worse. There are moments where I actually wish I had never seen any of
it.

We cut to a shot from the side and see Luke is sitting inside a cave on
Tatooine, with C-3P0 standing outside, waiting for him – no
