[scifinoir2] Iron Man 2 - short review (no spoilers)
I kept it as vague as possible for those that haven't seen the movie as yet. I give the movie a grade of 'C+'. The movie doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be, a sure sign of too many studio notes on the script. It wasted a good villain in Whiplash and the sub-storyline involving Whiplash and Stark. I feel that if Christopehr Nolan post Dark-Knight had directed it he would have taken this movie to the conclusion/staring everyone in the face in regards to one of the main characters. 'Black Widow', nothing special about her or her fight scenes. The directors fears of the movie being rushed to production to soon in my opinion were justified and clearly evident. 'Justin Hammer' was more like 'Justin Timberlake', is he a bad guy or comic-relief? The classic storyline of how War Machine is introduced int he book is made a mockery in the film, and barley acknowledge. Another wasted opportunity. Guest appearance by another superhero in the movie, and I don't mean War Machine (Terrence Howard is missed) nor Nick Fury. Barely worthy of bootleg. Writers at Tyler Perry Studio to Take Strike Action; Will Picket Oct 4th Grand Opening and Ask Invited Guests Not To Attend posted on Oct 3, 2008 The Writers Guild of America, West is taking on the fight for justice of writers who were fired when they tried to get a union contract with Tyler Perry's production company, House of Payne, LLC. The Guild yesterday (Oct 2) filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging that House of Payne unlawfully fired four writers in retaliation for their union activity. The charge also alleges that the company bargained in bad faith with the Guild, which is seeking to negotiate a contract covering the writers on Perry's cable television series House of Payne and Meet the Browns. The four writers, Kellie Griffin, Christopher Moore, Teri Brown-Jackson, and Lamont Ferrell, as well as supporters from the Writers Guild and the community, will be picketing during Saturdays opening of Perry's new studio and they're asking invited guests to respect their picket line. Together, these writers have written over one hundred episodes of House of Payne. Since April of this year they have been involved in a union organizing campaign with the Writers Guild of America, West so that their work on that show and the upcoming Meet the Browns would be covered by a Guild contract. Despite the enormous success of House of Payne, Perry has refused to agree to a contract that would give the writers health care, pensions, and residuals. On Tuesday of this week he fired the writers, after warning them some weeks ago that they should be careful about pushing the WGA deal or you could be replaced. We're asking all those who had planned to attend the opening of Tyler Perry's new studio not to cross our picket line, said writer Christopher Moore. It's very disheartening considering that this is a studio run by African Americans. What Tyler Perry is essentially saying to us is that 'you're black and there's not a lot of opportunities for you so you'll take what I give you' whether its fair or not. I feel like I was slapped in the face, like we were used said writer and WGAW member Teri Brown-Jackson. We were good enough to create over a hundred episodes, but now when it comes to reaping the benefits of the show being syndicated and having other spin-offs from it, he decides to let us go unless we accept a horrible offer. Disrespected, betrayed, saddened it's hard to describe, said writer and WGAW member Lamont Ferrell. The actors and a majority of the production crew on the show were working under union contracts and they received the pay and benefits that you need to survive on in this business. But after all those episodes and success when it came time for us to get a fair contract, were told on a conference call 'sorry, you're fired.' The show's head writer, Kellie Griffin, added, A lot of people who fought for civil rights and social justice never really saw what eventually came out of their work. While I'd like to see something positive come out of this for us, if this fight helps future black writers get what they deserve, that's a good thing. The writers and their supporters will be picketing at the grand opening of Tyler Perry Studios on Saturday, October 4, starting at 4 pm, and on Sunday, October 5, starting at 9 am.

I wasn't going to give my thoughts on Tylers film. In full disclosure I thought the movie was boring, plot-holed ladden, and unrealistic in some of its resolutions. That aside, I appreciate Tylers success, he's using his gifts. I don't think the film sold on his name alone or just because he was in the film, I feel that the film sold because of the other cast members as well. Its sad to read magazines that for the most part don't even acknowledge the other cast members who brought something to the mix. Tylers isn't breaking new ground, isn't telling stories I haven't seen before, and even though I don't see myself represented in any of his movies up to the point beyond skin color, he has built an audience and has brought that audience from the theater to the movie screen and thats the best part of his story that I appreciate. Now if it opened opposite say, Ridley's American Gangster, would it have done as well, and if not would it spell doom and gloom? Nope, just different films for different audiences. Theres a huge in the community waiting for other genre films, when they get served, will Tyler become yesterdays headlines, or will the voices that other folks want to hear or see be given light by the powerbrokers who realize that there is a community not being served. If Lumumba broke house records, maybe The Haitian Revolution can do the same thing. Hm. We will see. I'm not going to make the mistake thats been made before when a filmmaker like Matty Rich hits the headlines and make Tyler the annoited one as he's been called in awards shows lately to my chagrin, to do that minimizes the other voices that are talking but no ones giving them a time of day. But their day will come, it will cometheres a black filmmaker (for this conversation) that can bring it like Gladiator and I hope that Tylers success, or anyone else like his will help shed light on that sister (i.e, theres this script that I am now in a position to produce. You won't be disappointed. Some of the fight scenes is a bit claustrophobic, shot to tight like Batman Returns so you can't see the full destruction, but when Michael Bay goes wide angle...you can tell where most of the budget went to. If Peter was hyped up in aggression because of the black suit they way we were led to believe, then it would have been cool if Peter got down with his landlords daughter. Hey, May Jane kissed Osborn, so Peter can do whatever. The films trailer gave the impression that Peter was going to be seduced by the aggressive power of the black suit, like when on Miami Vice (TV) when Crockett got amnesia while undercover, he was a ruthless drug leader who literally tried to kill Tubbs twice... I wondered why Peter didn't arrest Sandman in the end since he did rob a few banks, and tried to kill both he and MJ, as well as cause massive destruction of the city. Also, when the bell rang the suit came momentarily off of Peter and had the T-Rex mouth that Venom has in the comic-book, it never did that effect while Peter actually wore the suit. Yet when Ed wears the symbiot, he has the T-Rex mouth while its still on his head? I thought Gwen's neck wsa going to snap in front of everyone when Peter tried to save her with the webbing when she was falling towards the ground (almost in the same position as the bridge scene in the comics where Gwen dies). New Orleans the Site of New Disney Film Thursday March 8 4:59 PM ET The Walt Disney Co. has started production on an animated musical fairy tale called The Frog Princess, which will be set in New Orleans and feature the Walt Disney Studio's first black princess. The company unveiled the plans Thursday at its annual shareholders' meeting in New Orleans. John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Disney and the Disney-owned unit Pixar Animation Studios, said the movie would return to the classic hand-drawn animation process, instead of using computer animation that has become the industry standard. He called the film an American fairy tale. The film's New Orleans setting and strong princess character give the film lots of excitement and texture, Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook said. The movie will be scored by Randy Newman, who also wrote the music for Disney's Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc. and Cars. Newman performed a song from the score for the shareholders. John Musker and Ron Clements, who co-directed The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules will co-direct the movie. The pair also wrote the story for the film. OKLAHOMA CITY - Cherokee Nation members voted Saturday to revoke the tribal
citizenship of an estimated 2,800 descendants of the people the Cherokee once
owned as slaves.
With all 32 precincts reporting, 76.6 percent had voted in favor of an
amendment to the tribal constitution that would limit citizenship to
descendants of by blood tribe members as listed on the federal Dawes
Commissions rolls from more than 100 years ago.
The commission, set up by a Congress bent on breaking up Indians collective
lands and parceling them out to tribal citizens, drew up two rolls, one listing
Cherokees by blood and the other listing freedmen, a roll of blacks regardless
of whether they had Indian blood.
Some opponents of the ballot question argued that attempts to remove freedmen
from the tribe were motivated by racism.
Im very disappointed that people bought into a lot of rhetoric and
falsehoods by tribal leaders, said Marilyn Vann, president of the Oklahoma
City-based Descendants of Freedmen of Five Civilized Tribes.
Tribal officials said the vote was a matter of self-determination.
The Cherokee people exercised the most basic democratic right, the right to
vote, tribal Principal Chief Chad Smith said. Their voice is clear as to who
should be citizens of the Cherokee Nation. No one else has the right to make
that determination.
Smith said turnout more than 8,700 was higher than turnout for the tribal
vote on the Cherokee Nation constitution four years ago.
On lots of issues, when they go to identity, they become things that people
pay attention to, Smith said.
The petition drive for the ballot measure followed a March 2006 ruling by the
Cherokee Nation Supreme Court that said an 1866 treaty assured freedmen
descendants of tribal citizenship. Since then, more than 2,000 freedmen
descendants have enrolled as citizens of the tribe.
Big money at stake
Advocates of expelling the freedmen call it a matter of safeguarding tribal
resources, which include a $350 million annual budget from federal and tribal
revenue, and Cherokees' share of a gambling industry that, for U.S. tribes
overall, takes in $22 billion a year. The grass-roots campaign for expulsion
has given heavy play to warnings that keeping freedmen in the Cherokee Nation
could encourage thousands more to sign up for a slice of the tribal pie.
Don't get taken advantage of by these people. They will suck you dry,
Darren Buzzard, an advocate of expelling the freedmen, wrote last summer in a
widely circulated e-mail denounced by freedmen. Don't let black freedmen back
you into a corner. PROTECT CHEROKEE CULTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN. FOR OUR

The issue is a remnant of the peculiar institution of Southern slavery and
a discordant note set against the ringing statements of racial solidarity often
voiced by people of color.
It's oppressed people that's oppressing people, said Verdie Triplett, 53,
an outspoken freedman of the Choctaw tribe, which, like the Cherokee, once
owned black slaves.
Cherokees, along with Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks and Seminoles, were long
known as the Five Civilized Tribes because they adopted many of the ways of
their white neighbors in the South, including the holding of black slaves.
Court challenges by freedmen descendants seeking to stop the election were
denied, but a federal judge left open the possibility that the case could be
refiled if Cherokees voted to lift their membership rights.
Tribal spokesman Mike Miller said the period to protest the election lasts
until March 12 and Cherokee courts are the proper venue for a challenge.
Vann promised a protest within the next week. We dont accept this
fraudulent election, Vann said.

Given that the genesis of the American civil rights movement was borne primarily by the African American community through blood and perseverance, the failing of our editorial process in allowing this opinion piece to go forward, was an insensitive and callous mistake that should never have been made by our publication. We will be reviewing that editorial process and making any changes necessary to prevent this from ever happening again. Police in Tijuana issued sling shots TIJUANA, Mexico, 01/23 - The police department has issued about 60 slingshots to officers in the violent border city of Tijuana, where soldiers confiscated police weapons two weeks ago on allegations of collusion with drug traffickers. Municipal police spokesman Fernando Bojorquez said Monday that the slingshots, along with bags of ballbearings, were given to officers patrolling areas of the city visited by tourists. Tijuana`s police force of 2,000 officers has been without guns since Jan. 5, but some patrol alongside armed state police. President Felipe Calderon sent 3,300 soldiers and federal police to Tijuana at the beginning of January to hunt down drug gangs.
