This reminds me of something Paul Mooney, my favorite comedian, sez: "There
are no ghosts! If there were ghosts, black slaves would be comin' back to
haunt your ass!"

Of course there would be black vampires and black werewolves, and because of
the hierarchies (which, in the case of the vampires, I totally do NOT
understand - werewolves WOULD be pack animals)they would rise to the top -
through cunning, guile and strength.

In fact, the oldest and strongest vampires would be black, if vampires existed.
Course, who would tune in to see that(besides me)?

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: "True Blood" Star Pacquin Comes Out on Video

2010-04-03 Thread Keith Johnson
The most important thing I think we can do is be open minded. And by that, i
don't mean being pure or free from all ignorance or bias. I mean opening the
mind to new ideas and ways of thinking that may make us confront that ignorance
or bias. As a black man, I've had my full measure of bigotry in my life. I
thank God, however, that I am black, because in my case it made me realize just
how hateful prejudice is. So i have my whole life forced myself to look at my
own biases and confront them. When i've found within myself feelings that I
can't justify holding, I force myself to look at them and change, to deprogram
myself, as you said. I personally consider it one of my greatest strengths.

One thing John Edwards said that I respect was around the issue of gay
marriage. He was asked if he thought gay marriage was okay. Edwards replied,
"I'm not all the way there yet where I can say unequivocably 'yes', but I'm
getting there". Despite his own issues (and what irony that a man has issues
with same-sex marriage when his heterosexual piccadilloes violate
Christian/human morality so blatantly) I respect that statement. I respect that
he's honest enough to say "I have some biases here, I recognize they need to
change, it's hard for me to change, but I am actively working to do so".

In my years I've had a bazillion conversations with prejudiced, ignorant
whites. I've had whites approach me with all sorts of arguments, questions,
theories. The one thing I've always said to those who want to engage me in
conversations on race is "If you have honest questions, ask them. I won't judge
you because maybe you just weren't taught any better. But I need you to have an
open mind and *listen* to what I say. If you just want to argue your views with
me, I'm not interested. But if you really are willing to listen, willing to
realize how you see things may be incomplete, then we can talk about anything
under the Sun. Otherwise i'm not interested in just getting into another
pointless argument on race".

I'm trying to do that here where I learn more about this topic from your point
of view, so thanks for the patience, forbearance, and information.

Everyone's got biases, prejudices, and misconceptions based on one thing or
another. I do my level best to be aware of them when I find them and try to
deprogram myself if I can. To be perfectly free from them is pretty hard. The
best you can do is just be self-aware and examining, and not everyone can
handle that. Which, quite frankly, is a shame.

Not really. The spectrum of human sexuality is just far too broad, and this is
why I personally *HATE* labels. I don't date nor am attracted to people based
on gender; I'm attracted to them based on them as a person and their

I think it is ridiculous that people who have a distinct but not exclusive
preference for one sex over the other may still identify themselves as
bisexual.

Since sexual attraction captures the richness of erotic sensations, affection,
admiration in addition to sexual arousal, we could all be classified as
"bi-sexual."

I have several problems with Eggs demise. Whycome the "sexy" (my seventeen
year-old daughter's designation) black man got to be the only one in Bon Tempts
to have a crisis of conscience? And why he got to be taken out with a head
shot (seems mighty personal to me). And, why oh why did he have to be taken
out by that functioning idiot Jason Stackhouse? Jason Stackhouse wouldn't know
his ass from a hole in the ground with audio instructions.

At the end of the day, however, I have to rethink my fondness for
blood-suckers. I think the recent revival of the genre can be specifically
linked to a deep seeded need in the populace at large for white suprematist
fantasies.

I loved Ann Rice's Vampire Chronicles but I am not oblivious Lestat's blond God
divinity (expecially in the book). It should be noted that Vampires gained
currency in popular culture at the same time as the blond, blue-eyed Jesus
(during the Great Depression - another time when white folks weren't feeling
particularly froggy).

And don't forget all the business about having pale skin and not being able to
go out in the sun (without disastrous consequences). In fact, vampires appear
to be particularly melanin challenged; just as there appears to be a dearth of
vampires blessed with melanin.

This season of "True Blood" has been a hot mess! Watching I often feel like
Rosario Dawson's character in Clerks II when she walks in on a man having sex
with a donkey in the middle of the fast food emporium she manages: "I'm
disgusted and repulsed and...and(yet)I can't look away!"

I was elated that Lafayette was back but I was totally not feeling his chained
in the basement arc. I would have almost preferred for him to have died (as he
did in the book) than to see him chained up like a dog.

~(no)rave!

Not to get too far in the weeds on the show. But seems to be few vampires of
color. Also  what if slaves were "made" could enough  of them could have :

1. Seized power
2. Fled to freedom
3. Made more slaves to outlive the slavemaster

Same here. I guess Godrick served the same purpose in the books but he was
interesting and I would have liked to see him stick around. I'd like to see
more of he and Eric's adventures in Viking land.

I wonder how powerful the Queen will be and just what will they do to get rid
of Maryanne?

2008-11-24 Thread Tracey de Morsella
The second season reinvents it. It was wonderful. The first season focused
on sex and being outrageous. The second season focuses on character
development, character relationships, developing the lore of torchwood and
really telling a story. Sex is only used to enhance the story --- not be
the story.

Skip the first season and give the second season a look. I do not think you
will be disappointed

egads!
Torchwood.
I so wanted to like that show...
But the characters were so friggin annoying... and the man-kissin-man
scenes were so obviously gratituous, I just usually rolled my eyes. I
thought the writing on there was just bad; and more people needed to
die off.

2008-11-23 Thread Adrianne Brennan
I read the books long before the show (and it's spelled Sookie), and love
them. The show itself I like but on a different level than I would put the
books. A lot of people who have read the books then watched the show didn't
like how it deviated in spots.
It's definitely not suffering from the buxom star cliche; right now it
suffers from uneven writing from writers whom I suspect never read the
books.

Okay, I hear you... but I have to disagree somewhat. True Blood is
alot more than the buxom star in love with a vampire cliche. They've
thrown in alot more to go along with the common genre themes.

The buxom star herself is a mystery, as it turns out Sukky (sp) is an
empath. They've thrown in hoodoo and possible demon possession,
there's a shape-shifter angle, a new coming werewolf angle, there's
the whole V thing in which vamps are vulnerable to addicts who want
to trip off their blood thing... and... while the sistas' fake
southern accent gets on my nerves... there is something about the
bayou setting (even if not fully authentic--lived in 2nd louisiana
much of my life: houston/easern tx) that makes this flick a bit
different. I think some of the early sex-scenes were a bit much, and
they're finally getting into the varied aspects of this world, but
the show definitely (IMHO) takes the Americana vampire genre (and I'm
actually glad its not another Euro-vamp-comes-to-america story) to
*different* level.

So far I'm diggin True Blood. For a tv series on vamps, its about as
unique as I've seen in quite a long time. Never read the books it was
based on by Charlain Harris, but so far seems like a good job. I like
that they don't mind reinventing vampires. Out with the religious--
crucifixes don't harm them. All of them aren't too-cool-to exist.
There's the whole link of vampire rights to civil rights and
especially the gay rights cause. And Monroe--the gay brotha who
reprises the true meaning of a southern "homo thug"--is probably one
of my fave characters.

It's worth a look see.

For those who don't have HBO, might I suggest Surf the Channel.

True dat! Last vampire story I've seen in years that I loved was the British

I don't have HBO, so haven't seen this. But I too have tired of the "buxom star
in love with a vampire" theme. Does anyone remember the likes of "Nosferatu"
nowadays? "Angel" and stuff have their place, but i always think back to the
original Eastern European legends of the vampyr as a corpse crawling out of the
grave to *eat* people. I'd like to see a return to more fare like that. Of
course, that doesn't make for good TV series or swoon-inducing movies like
today's "Twilight".

As for cliche-ridden portrayals, that is the stock in trade of TV and it is
crazy. I'm from Fort Worth, love the Western flavor it still has, but even I
had to laugh at portrayals of the area like "Dallas" and "Walker, Texas
Ranger". To hear them tell it, every single businessman and woman in the
Metroplex (the DFW area), wears cowboy hats, boots, and jeans with those bolo
ties and suits. And years ago, there was an abortive attempt to create a series
based on the book and film "The Client". Think it starred Jobeth Williams. It
was set here in Atlanta. The first ep featured a riverboat on which gambling
was taking place, like something from Mark Twain's days. The thing is, there
hasn't been riverboat traffic here in over a century, let alone gambling on the
river! But somehow it made it into the show.

in love with a vampire" theme.

And years ago, there was an abortive attempt to create a
series based on the book and film "The Client". Think it starred Jobeth
Williams. It was set here in Atlanta. The first ep featured a riverboat on
which gambling was taking place, like something from Mark Twain's days. The
thing is, there hasn't been riverboat traffic here in over a century, let alone
gambling on the river! But somehow it made it into the show.

I watch it, but it annoys me more and more. Perhaps it the
Louisiana locale. I live here and know how ridiculous the
background assumptions are. Even K'ville was more true to life.

Yarbro would never allow it, but I am hungry for a show from the
vampire's POV like her St. Germain character. I am really tired of
shows from the point of view of the buxom star in love with a
vampire.

I hear you! My favorite parts of the show are not the parts that have
to do with the supernatural (although I DO enjoy those), it is the
parts that deal with the "natural." For instance, on last week's
episode where Rene tells Jason Stackhouse to use his "man hand" on his
psycho-vegan girlfriend (with later disastrous results)and the mama's
boy gets the liquid courage to stand up to his mother, telling her he
will have SIX beers if he wants to when she tells him he has had
enough at two.
