One email in particular wants me to verify that [EMAIL PROTECTED] is my email address, while the others are about joining "zoomtext" all with reference to argyll.wisemagic.com. Are you setting up the list at Yahoo Groups? Is anyone else getting messages like this? Toby, there are verification codes and passwords in one of these messages. I won't hit "delete" (yet) just in case you want to see them. --Cynthia Cathcart www.CynthiaCathcart.net You are not going mad! I'm getting them as well! Just ignore them - some spambot has attempted to join a yahoo groups (zoomtext) using the generic list address - probably some defective spambots coding. YahooGroups is now sending (a legitimate - as far as it sees it!) message to the e-mail address of the group - which is now being recieved by everyone subscribed to Scots-l. Just delete it. In a message dated 31/08/04 00:04:27 GMT Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: First and foremost, my thanks to Bev Lawton for all the web-references on Annie Gilchrist, which she sent to the list a couple of weeks ago in answer to my plea for information. I visited all those websites, and was getting discouraged because I found that I'd already been to most of them and in fact one of the page I actually edited...a long time ago. Funny bumping into yourself like that. I hit "pay dirt" by following a few links on one of Bev's sites: the Elphinstone Institute at Aberdeen University http://www.abdn.ac.uk/elphinstone/ has just published a book entitled, "Folk Song: Tradition, Revival, and Re-Creation" edited by Ian Russell and David Atkinson. Has this been mentioned on the list before? If so, well, it bears repeating. I ordered a copy, and it came just last week. It has a *wonderful* biography of Annie Gilchrist, but more than that it is full of peer-reviewed, fully footnoted, essays and an extensive bibliography. Does anyone else have this book? Any thoughts on it? I particularly enjoyed David Atkinson's "Revival:genuine or spurious?" -- but then I must also admit that I've only read three of the 36 essays in the book. --Cynthia Cathcart www.CynthiaCathcart.net Glad to be of help Cynthia - just one minor point - when I got up this morning I was pretty convinced I was a Male! I'll check again in the morning but I don't expect any change ;-) Bev "The Bloke" Lawton.

I have to work out postage rates, and for overseas buyers I have set up a Paypal account, but that won't be active for a couple of weeks. I'll keep you all informed. I just wanted to say "Hey, it's arrived!" Oh, and I intend to record accompanying CDs with the books too...soon... This sounds great Nigel - put me down for a copy of Vol 1 & 2. I have downloaded some of your Mandolin Tab tunes - can I ask what you use to create the manuscripts? Bev Lawton

I have downloaded them all! Spey in Spate on the Mandoid family of instruments(Cittern/Mandola/Mandolin) is now the weekend project! There was another JKS tune with Spey in the title whose name escapes me at the moment - clues anyone? And the bonus ball question is : I have just revisted a 1997 CD by SkyeDance : "Way Out to Hope Street" CUL111D on Culburnie records. It has a track(14) on it called "Bannockburn" which I believe is an original Alasdair Fraser composition. It's well suited to Mandolin and as my better half is now learning the Fiddle although I have most of the tune off pat I need the dots/abc to allow her to learn it (I tend to get tunes by ear and she likes the dots plus me lilting the tune!) any sources anyone? Thanks and have a great weekend all. Bev Lawton.

No geographical limit was set to the Society's activities, and although the main interest were the folk songs of Britain and Ireland, the Journal of the Folk Song Society published articles from other countries as well. From 1904, the Folk Song Society became the focus of the new breed of folksong collectors, led by Cecil Sharp, including Ralph Vaughan Williams, George Butterworth, George Gardiner, Henry Hammond, Annie Gilchrist and Ella Leather, and the Journal published songs from this 'golden age' of folksong collecting.
