[Scottish] Is my computer now a spam bot?!! (Help!)

2008-07-20 Thread babaguy

Hello All -

I opened up my myway inbox just now and saw to my horror a message apparently
sent out by MY e-mail address - e.g. babaguy 'at' myway dot com and the subject
line on the e-mail is something like 'Angelina Jolie XXX video...'

I have a mac now, and no anti-virus software as everyone seemed to think 'Oh,
it'll be all right - there aren't many viruses for macs...' etc.

Have I been spam-bot'ed?

If I characterise the message as spam I won't be able to receive any messages I
send myself (to include attachements, etc. so I can print them later,
elsewhere)

Probably time to scrap myway, anyway...

Any thoughts from any of you? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Yours apprehensively,

- Paul B.

Re: [Scottish] Fraudulent Internet use of my debit card

2008-07-17 Thread babaguy

Hello All,

My advice is to get yourself a pay-as-you-go Maestro card - this won't be able
to be used outside Europe (for Amazon.com, or stuff in the States, etc. for
example) but because it is a pay-as-you-go, it only ever has the amount of
money on it that you top it up with.

I first heard about these cards on Radio 4's MONEYBOX program(me) and went to
their website.

I've checked back on these various cards from time to time, and the one I chose
seems to be the best one.

It's provided by 360 Money. Go to: http://www.360money.com/

360 Money is owned by PrePay technologies, the folks who own the yellow boxes
that you swipe cards thru to top up your mobile phone, buy power cards, etc.
They have a dedicated swiper-upper just for topping up a 360 money card.

The card costs £5 to buy - they charge 8/10's of 1 per cent when you top it up,
and if you take money from a cashpoint, they charge you £1.50.

Their banking is done by Clydesdale Bank. There are no paper statements, only
a web statement...

It's a really good deal, you can use it to pay all kinds of bills, on the web
and off - they have one card which is swipe/signature - designed for children
buying stuff on the internet, mainly - and they also do one with a chip pin.

But since the card only ever has the dough you load it up with, there is very
little danger of anyone cloning it or ripping you off...

Google Pre-pay Maestro Cards to see the other ones...

Best of luck !

2008-06-17 Thread babaguy

Welcome Matt !

I ALSO hail from the Old Country, but have been here nearly 30 years ( ! ) -

Just my 2 cents (ooops! PENCE ! ) - When I was trying to find a way of
connecting to the net (at ALL) a year and a half ago, I picked up a Thomson
Speedtouch modem from someone on Glasgow-Freeshare

(and btw - you can join both Glasgow-Freeshare and Glasgow-Freecycle at
yahoogroups - worth it, believe me!)

- ANYWAY, I certainly found configuring the Speedtouch AT ALL to be extremely
complex and fraught with ifs ands and buts in various Linux message board
postings from around Earth - I eventually settled - as I said to John Seago -
on the Safecom ADSL Modem Router, though this may be way basic for what you are
looking to do -

You just plug it in and it's recognised and functions! There's something to be
said for this... Enjoy Scoatland!

- babaguy

 - a Thomson Speedtouch or Zyxel might be good for that, but YMMV; check
first.

Thank you for the sound advice. I will do my best to follow all of it and

But seriously, there isn't any need for name-calling or rudeness. I have never
been anything but courteous (if slow, by your lights), and grateful for all
your time and help, as I am now. It may be worthwhile remembering that there
are at least nine different types of intelligence, and each learns better in
some ways than others.

For example, some may learn more quickly by hearing, some by seeing, some by
reading, some by physically doing, and so on. I am, and have been, doing my
best with these distros, no matter what it may seem to any of you. I hope the
moderator of this list wags a finger at those whose exasperation drives them to
hurl personal epithets. However, from my POV, no offense taken. And the Kubuntu
is much easier to deal with than the Breezy (hole-y?) version of Ubuntu I
struggled with before. Thanks again, all, Paul

[Scottish] Kubuntu Install help.....?

2007-03-05 Thread babaguy
 Hello again -

I've e-mailed the Scribbler, but many hands might make light work so.

I finally was able to download and successfully burn the kubuntu ISO CD as
recommended by Scribbler (took 5 CD's but, hey!)

I put it into the Linux box and booted- and hit enter when it asked me
(Install Kubuntu) (I've changed the boot order at last!)

The kubuntu logo came up and a back-and-forth bar, but no info about the
progress of the install -

Eventually it has given me a command line, and I have no idea what it wants me
to do...

I've MAN'd but the machine will not allow me to scroll back up through the
output to see what command I might usefully try...

I HAVE tried sudo apt-get install Kubuntu

and it starts to then give me: E: couldn't find package kubuntu

(sigh)

Help, please

2007-02-28 Thread babaguy
Dear All, Well, I am now to the point where I realise that Linux is really
only ever going to be a hobby, as it just seems to require so much time to
simply make up its mind to *function*...(or for me to read its mind and
discover how to make it do stuff..!)I have Ubuntu (as I'm sure you know by
now...5.10) -

What I've been trying to do, just as a simple exercise really, to see if I can
do *anything* - (well, I *have* managed to get online with the linux box!
Whew!) - is to download and install even one pkg. -

I've tried apt-get I've tried apt-get install - I've tried the Synaptic
Package manager - (I was looking for Ubuntu updates/upgrades and trying to
apply them just to see if I *could* !)

The problem I keep running into is that although software gets downloaded
okay, I don't know where it *is* and neither does Ubuntu, and archive manager -
the default installer (or so it tells me) can never open/install *any*thing

I've looked thru the apt-get -help instructions and tried them , but they
don't work either...

I'd LIKE to install Opera on the computer (Mozilla in Ubuntu is pretty
disappointing) but although the download of Opera for Linux goes all right, the
same dead end occurs with the archive manager and I can't figure out which
*other* pkg might open it . When I *do* look through other packages, they're
usually empty when I finally work on down the directory or file tree...

It really *is* most annoying - and very time-consuming..

As ever, any help would be very much appreciated.

[Scottish] Linux stuff...

2007-02-24 Thread babaguy
 Hello All,

I don't know if my last e-mail got through or not, I was asking any advice
anyone might have for a decent Anti-virus software that is recognised by and
cooperates with Linux(Ubuntu doesn't want to recognise Avast! and I've read
many posts in Avast! forums about the difficulties of making it do so...)

I *did* check with one SysAdmin guy who consulted a Linux friend who is
apparently ultra conscious about computer security and apprently *he* said that
he doesn't bother with anti-virus software in Linux, because the permissions to
get into Linux in the first place are so dense, that it's not that necessary

Is this the feeling among any of you seasoned Linux/BSD hands...?

ALSO: How do I open new programs once I've downloaded them in UBU? It asks me
to open them with Archive Manager, but then Archive Manager never recognises
them - or it asks me what program to OPEN the new program with, and - *I* don't
knowI thought programs open themselves by and large, when you ask them to
do so - or is this a hopelessly backward attitude...?

ONE LAST ? - I tried to copy a URL (or some text, can't remember which) from an
open web page (in the Ubuntu web browser Mozilla) and paste it into Open Office
Writer (the UBU office suite) and when I opened Writer the paste option (and
several *other* options) were not enabled.

So is Open Office automatically NOT synchronised with Mozilla? Do I have to
somehow make this mutual recognition occur...?

Would AbiWord be any better...?

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks !

- Paul B.

[Scottish] Thanks, Guys!

2007-02-24 Thread babaguy
 Dear William, Carl and Colin,

Thank you for all the good, useful advice! I much appreciate it.

I did use the GUI and not the apt get command to download (or not) the things
I was trying to add from the Ubuntiverse-o-sphere...

I'll try being more mouse-attuned (and not languish in the mouse-averse) and
also remember the commands I only *just* learned tonight (coincidentally -
*D'oh!* Synchronicity!) to wit: Ctrl + C etc.

Thanks for all your quick and apt (!) help.

Yours aye,

[Scottish] Linux Anti-Virus etc.....?

2007-02-23 Thread babaguy

Dear All, Some of you might be happy to know I am at last online via this Linux
(Ubuntu) box.! quot;Ready for my next big project now, quot; (as an
Electron Club member just wrote after finally enabling his return key on an IBM
Thinkpad (ebay verson).Tried to install Avast! - brought it in first as a
.deb package but the system didn't recognise it - then brought in the tarball
and system asked me to quot;extractquot; it - which I did, and it put itself
into /usr  /bin  and /share  directories (from what I could find...)But when I
open these files there is nothing there - the Avast key came to my e-mail, but
the message that came with it was instructions for installing on a Windows
systemsigh.Been into the Avast4workstation forum and there are plenty
of people who have had BOO-COO dificulty installing Avast.(We put Avast on
the windows machine a week or so ago because apparently AVG stopped supporting
the kernal of XP in favour of Vista - or this may be
their sneaky quot;upgrade to version 7.5quot; message in reality.)What
anti-virus software do any of you use? - how did you download it and install
it? - Do I need to download any installers or package management tools from the
Ubuntu quot;Universequot; or wherever to actually get the programme
recognised and installed?I have tried to use the quot;Add Applicationsquot;
tool in Ubuntu and also the Synaptic Pkg Manager - but I don't really
understand all they ask me to do (if anything) - I've tried using the  ' ls '
command and there are no results for Avast. My computer is already running
slower amp; slowerAny help would be greatly appreciated ! As ever,
thanking you in advance,- Paul

[Scottish] Ubuntu rampant.....

2007-02-15 Thread babaguy
Hi everyone!Today our Windows machine died - we haven't figured out yet if it
was the power device, the motherboard or what -

However, in an effort to rescue some files we tried to install Windows '98 on
my Ubuntu machine, and even though the boot sequence is supposed to go CDROM
first (I went into the settings and verified this - we were trying to install
Windows '98 (Thanks Magnus, remember giving that to me long ago...?) in order
to have a Windows system and to try and hook up the HDD from the dead machine
as a secondary drive and see if we could transfer files across ) -

HOWEVER - the Ubuntu just boots as Ubuntu no matter what!

We even put another old hard drive onto the Ubuntu machine, put in the Windows
'98 CD into the CD drive - and - UBUNTU! It must be booting from RAM or
something! I went into the BIOS to try to get the Ubu machine to maybe
recognise the new HDD...or to at least allow itself to be de-installed or
written over

How is this DONE in Linux.? The Ubuntu is far more persistent than Windows,
at least this version. I don't see how to get rid of it or install anything
else over it.

Is this just a fault in *my* machine?

Another question - this one about Open Office...When I've opened up Open Office
Writer in Ubuntu (it's 5.10, btw - Breezy Badger), the Thesaurus is not
enabled...does BreezBadge come without the Thesaurus properly installed and one
must go fetch it? Or is it *ON* my machine somewhere, and I've got to write
some command code to find it and install it in the right file/directory?I'm
HOPING my new ADSL modem router (recommended by one helpful SLUGger) will
arrive tomorrow, so I *may* be able to go the the Ubuntu
Universe/Multiverse/Whatever and get the Open Office Thesaurus..i
hope!

If I'm able to reply, you'll know I at least have a computer that functions
(I'm doing this e-mail at a helpful third party place.)

Thanks in advance for your helpI am, as always

humbled,

- Paul B

Thanks Guys - No, the files are simply WORD files, which ought to be readable
in Open Office - but - (look, I'm sorry to appear so lame, but...)

Exactly how do I mount an external drive in Ubu...? I know the Gnome D.E. is
fairly pointy-clickable, but I'm not sure where you find the equivalent (if
any) to My Computer in Ubuntu (or Linux generally - this was one of the
things that drove me away gnashing my teeth at Suse a few years agoI *want*
to be a Linux kind of guy, I have an M. Gange Linux SysAdmin book, I'm willing,
but I'm not sure how to make Linux look for another drive, nor how to open it
up, nor U-Mount it once I've had my way with it.plus, I thought Linux did
not co-exist well with Windows (or vice versa) - or have *i* missed
something...?

Thanks again, and any help will be hugely appreciated.

RE: [Scottish] Kino workshop - video editing for Linux, Wednesday 7th February 2007

2007-02-08 Thread babaguy
 Hi All!

Just a note to say that Simon Yuill's Kino/Cinellera workshop was very good
indeed - well structured, informative -

- but really only scratched the intriguing surface of the Open Source Video
Editing terrain - holding out the tantalising prospect of MORE hands-on
experience and maybe the chance to create a practical project through which we
can LEARN (ooops! - capitals *bad*!) more about how to use these two
programmes

If you are interested in Open Source Video Editing (for movies, music videos,
documentaries, podcasts, etc.) - go to THE ELECTRON CLUB's website
(www.electronclub.org) and join up! (i did!)

Re: moRe: [Scottish] Broadband Question...

2007-01-14 Thread babaguy
 Dear Kyle,

Thank you for the concrete help/link, and the heads-up(!) on Linux
abbreviations initials (RTFM indeed!) -

I have tried connecting the linux box using both the BT Voyager ADSL USB modem,
*and* (no caps, see?) the Thomson Speed Touch 330 - but the Ubuntu box does not
want to recognise the modem...

I went into FirefoxEditPreferences and specified Direct Connection to the
internet -

I've tried several other possibilities, but none of them are simply Configure
your modem - and I cannot find anything about this in any of the onboard
HowTo's or FAQ pages that come with the version of Ubuntu.

I'm also peeved with Ubuntu that there is no simple HELP window where you can
type in the device/problem/whatever for which you're looking for help. I'll try
(via the Windows machine, still the *only* way I can get onto the net!) and
look for help at the place towards which you pointed me - and Thanks again!

If anyone else can PLEASE (I really MEAN these capitals, I *would* like to be
able to use my Linux to actually *do* something) help me with configuring a
modem (either BT VOYAGER ADSL or THOMSON Speed Touch 330), please get in
touch...

Yours with that old, almost forgotten mounting (and u-mounting) frustration,
but eternally springing Linux-ward hope,

- Paul Birchard

Hi Paul,

This is the first that you mention the Speedtouch 330. All previous opinions
were based on the BT Voyager which you mention (of which I know of at least 4
different models). I never used my Speedtouch, I handed it away on Freecycle.
I do recall setting one up about 6 years ago for a friend, and they were a
nightmare back then.

Things have improved though, and there's a howto written here...
http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/ubuntu/index.html

There may be a way of doing it with pointy clicky interface things, but I've
not come across it. Ben Thorp, our wonderful Ubuntu Community Hero, may be able
to point you in the right direction if you don't want to go near the command
line.

Kyle PS. Less capitals, proper punctuation. We lean towards formal writing
styles here

(p.s. I believe it ought to be * fewer capitals - etc./usr/bin-me!)

Thanks Kyle, for the link and the heads-up!

There was so much information on the page that I haven't tried to follow what
it suggests -

I think it requires that I download the firmware for the Speed Touch and burn
it to a CD and then run that CD on the Ubuntu box in order to configure the
Speed Touch - (

Since I don't have a CD-R on either computer I figure this would be an
interesting process.)

Gordon simply said to bin the Speed Touch, and I probably will...

What is the simplest way to get on the net via Linux - How do YOU guys do it?

Thanks again, all, and - why aren't we all in our beds by now?

Suppose I'm using KDE, but I want another web browser. Do I simply configure

Also, in your experience, is Konqueror recognised by most UK web hosting co's.
as a browser useable for updating/uploading stuff to one'/s web site? (I have
UK Web Solutions Direct hosting my site and I seem to recall that they support

they support Konqueror.)

Dear All, I am the neophyte who understands virtually nothing about Linux,
but whom many of you were kind enough to offer help to, a few weeks ago.
I am still no further ahead with my Suse Linux 9.1 Personal - I feel very
strongly that I simply got a duff copy of the software (I went into the
directories last night to try to see some information at least ( ! ) about the
USB ports, or the modem - and nothing would open, nothing would appear when I
clicked upon the files listing USB's for example, in the directory - likewise
(as I think I shared some weeks back) when I typed
ls /mnt or ls /dev in the command
line, I get a blank window coming up
Is there anyone who would be willing to share a copy of Suse 9.2 or
Mandrake of recent vintage? (or another version ) with me? From what I read
|Mandrake is more point amp; click than other distros - is this really so,
do you(s) think? ( That would cerainly make it easier and more do-able for
me.! )
My computer is a compac pentium III built in 2000, a 10 gig hard
drive.I don't have anything to lose on it because I haven't been able
to put anything INTO it !
I would simply like to have a computer that works (!) - currently I can't
do much more than get my butt kicked playing Knights - the Suse Chess game -

And if there is anyone who has a half hour to spare in Glesga's West End
and could meet me to help me verify if I'm just a doughball, or if indeed I've
got a bad copy of Linux, would you please get in touch?
Again, sorry to be so unknowing and dense, but I've read about and wanted
to try Linux for about six years and n ow that I've done so, it's really
nothing but nothing - sigh.it MUST be better than this !

[Scottish] Thanks SLUGgers ! !

2005-01-12 Thread babaguy
Dear One amp; All, Thank you for all for your thoughtful and courteous
help - I've printed out your replies on the family computer back at the ranch,
and will try everything you've mentioned.
In the interests of sharing information, I'll say these things
however..
There WAS a manual with 9.1 Personal - but it's very thin and tells you
everything you except what you're actually looking for !
There is a two disk set in Suse Personal 9.1 - but it DOES advise you that
if disk one won't boot for some reason, you can just use disk 2 - I don't know
why this might be, probably something to do with the hardware in one's machine
recognising it.
The modem I bought is external and is a USB one - I may bite the bullet
and buy another serial port one, as I see is suggested..
I'm not a power Windows user, or a power ANYthing-user; I know very little
about computers or computing languages - but I HAVE been reading LINUX Format
for years (more so two or three years ago) and always thought that when I got a
computer of MY OWN, I'd go for it.
The computer I'm using is one I FOUND ! (a metal cased Compac pentium III
- made in 2000)
I reloaded the Linux on this machine last night, and again, it won't
recognise the modem - I've tried using YaST, and clicking (no modem detected)
and configure as YaST suggested, and I've designated the modem in two
different ways - (with some designations with ' tty ' in them - again, as
suggested by the HELP or Manual somewhere) - but it appears only to recognise
its own internal-in-the-software-virtual modem, but not the USB one - but even
the virtual modem won't connect with the net.
I'm sorry my e-mail seems to deconstruct itself before it reaches some of
you and you have to cut through scrambled formatting - don't know why that
might be !
As I say, there is only ONE manual with Personal 9.1 - I'm heartened (in a
weird way) that others have had real trouble with this distro - but I don't
have any dough to buy a larger, better one - but one of you has kindly offered
to burn me something else.
We'll seeI'll take this sheaf of e-mails home and try to make the
thing work!
btw this is a dumb question, so I crave your indulgence - but is it
possible the USB ports are just knackered on my (found) machine? I don't get
any lights on in the modem - or is that normal ?
Thank you all again - I'll get back to you !
   Yours and oblige -

[Scottish] (is there anyone who can) HELP ? ! !

2005-01-11 Thread babaguy
Hello All ! I bought amp; installed Suse 9.1 Personal - I've had a few
difficulties which I've inquired of one of our number about, and more or less
resolved, but honestly, I'm not running the machine now because it is simply
too much hassle to sort out - so far, that is ! Problems: I can't get the
machine to recognise or link up to the external modem I bought.so I
can't get online. The first disk from the Suse WILL not
boot (seems to be corrupted) , so I've used the second one - which seems to be
all right.but, as I say, there is essential stuff that isn't occurring.
And one odd thing - there is a quite a lovely initial wallpaper that comes up
as standard once the machine is booted. I experimented and stuck on another
one, then when I wanted to change back to the original, it had disappeared from
the available options.! When I have typed in the mount/dev commands
I don't seem to get a clickable or command-able list of devices the machine
recognises - I have gotten different messages each time I've tried - (but I
haven't done anything with it for over a week, as much other work beckoned,
which I've done on my old windows 3.1 system.)
ANYway, I don't want to be a moany, gripy sort of person, but I also would
really like to be able to use Linux, and it ain't easy - at all ! - as far as I
can see..I realise that Suse have deleted 9.1 Personal - maybe there were
problems with it
If anyone is in a position to talk me through getting the machine to do
basic stuff, please let me know. I live in the West End of Glasgow..
 Until soon, I am
  Yours,
hopefully,
