Would they be wiped if you were upgrading from Windows 2000 to XP??

I've no idea, the only upgrade I ever did was from windows 3. something to 98!

Well, as a matter of fact, I updraded 9.3. to 10 just recently. It went
ok, however after the upgrade (updated KDE from 3.3 to 3.4) the WIFI
card didn't work and the sound card also stopped functioning. Back up
all of your data. This can be found in your Home folder.

Yep, I meant my home/blah... files, and I take your point about backing up
before upgrading.

You should always backup your data before an upgrade... :-) But generally
 you should be ok.

By my data files I'm assuming you mean your own /home/blah user files?
The main problem you're liable to see in terms of your own desktop is
that if you are leaping up a few KDE versions then there can be a few
 quirks.

I've not done a 9-10 upgrade. I've done a few 8.0-8.2 and 8.2 -9.0 all of
which were painless but I know other people have been burnt on upgrades to
9.0. If possible I would definitely back up your home dir (I've kept mine on
a seperate partition - often a seperate disk - for a long time) and anything
modified in /etc if this is even remotely possible. And, of course, test your
backups.

ISR that there's several steps which are not intuitive (like NOT partitioning
the disk) so keep your wits about you until the RPMs start rolling out to
disk.

In my personal experience going from a .0 to a .1 or rc1 to rc2 etc
seems to run smoothly but upgrading by a full number can go horribly
wrong depending on your setup, probably best to take a backup of
anything critical in case it goes pear shaped.

Ive never used Mandrake again since that ill fated incident :o)
