[silk] anyone near Coimbatore?
My girlfriend, Leslie Martin, is a PhD student in environmental economics at UC Berkeley, and will shortly be visiting Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu with a team of five research assistant students who are in an econ masters program. They will be there to study how small firms, particularly firms in the textile industry, deal with infrastructure problems such as electricity shortages. They'll be conducting a survey regarding power shortages, electricity demand, the adoption of generators, and the extent to which firms are able to reschedule labor to times when electricity is available. Leslie will be there for about six weeks and would probably appreciate meeting some local people in a nonwork context. If any of y'all are nearby, I heartily recommend you drop her a line (she's cc'd above) to say hello. Of course she has many fine qualities and I heartily recommend her society to you! Jeremy

I can't recommend anyone in particular (though I suspect Udhay can) but I do recommend taking the toy steam train to Ooty! Besides being a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of only two cog-wheel narrow-gauge trains in India, it's utterly charming. (Bookings required.) -- Charles
Re: [silk] anyone near Coimbatore?
If she cares to drop by bangalore or chennai, both a nights train ride / an hour by air away from coimbatore, that might be easier? You'll find that power cuts are a regular feature in industrial areas around india, most companies compensate by buying diesel generators --Original Message-- From: Jeremy Bornstein Sender: silklist-bounces+suresh=hserus@lists.hserus.net To: Silk List Cc: Leslie Martin ReplyTo: silklist@lists.hserus.net Subject: [silk] anyone near Coimbatore? That way, they can hedge their bets: if the market clearing price for power is lower than the cost of running a diesel generator, they save money. If they have to run the generator, then in principle, they can even sell any surplus power they generate during that period. The minimum volume is 1MW, but in practice, some people buy even less and nobody objects. Aside: exchange power was very expensive in Tamil Nadu in the run-up to the elections (4-5x the prices elsewhere in the country). -- ams

Does one need to be a producer of electricity to participate in an energy exchange ? -Tarun PS: Apologies for the thread drift

There's only one, which was mandated by the CERC (Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, www.cercind.gov.in) in 2008, and operated by a private company (IEX). And no, you don't have to be a seller to trade on the exchange. There are many more buyers than sellers. You just have to do some paperwork to get approval, and then become an IEX member (or, as most people do, go through a broker). The power is delivered through the normal grid, but to a separate meter. -- ams
