[silk] best indian whisky and rum ?
Any recommendations on good indian whisky and rum (I don't want the scotch blended stuff) ? I want to give it as a gift to some wine drinkers, but since Indian wine is so terrible I would rather give alcohol. Unfortunately, I am a bit out of date with whats current ...

I would second (or is it third) the Amrut range. They have 3 variants. Amrut Single Malt, Amrut Fusion, and Amrut Peated. I personally like the peated whiskey the best. It has a much more dense and smoky flavor to it. I would rank the Fusion second, followed by the regular variant.
Re: [silk] best indian whisky and rum ?
Slide thread-drift: if you're in Bangalore, write in to visit Amrut's distillery. It was quite fabulous, admiring the stills, getting the spiel and partaking of the angel's share. Unfortunately customs and excise rules meant they couldn't sell, but we could taste. Good lord that was fun. So during the tour of their distillery, I discovered that they actually have some 26 variants. It's hard to find anything other than Fusion in the usual booze shops though. The PR guy said that they export to some outlets in the UK, but he wasn't too clear on who they were... This month and a bit, the weather in Bangalore is perfect for some peaty, smoky whiskys. Not sure why the crowd here seems to be against the idea, but I find Sula's wines as good as any I've had anywhere else.

They seem to taste OK .. but more than once I have had a terrible headache and queasiness in the stomach after drinking Indian wine - there is something not natural about their production process. Having spent time in vineyards in the US, in South West Australia, in France and in Nasik - I can't say I see any significant difference in their production process. Perhaps I've been lucky with no headaches either. What' the general experience of the group? Mahesh

http://indianwinetasting.blogspot.in Knowledgeable reviews and seems to be that the nasik wines are rather better, indage platinum, York, Tiger Hill etc are reasonable alternatives to Sula. There are some higher grade tasmac shops that sell premium wines and spirits. It is a local monopoly so tasmac and duty free stores are the only place. Knowledgeable reviews and seems to be that the nasik wines are rather better, indage platinum, York, Tiger Hill etc are reasonable alternatives to Sula. Especially indage I've had more occasion to drink Indian wines than I'd like, and usually limited in choice. Based on this, my views: - The wines that are sold in India usually spend a very long time on shelves. The chances of finding a vinegary bottle is extremely high. - Anecdotally, Fratelli, Grover and Indage wines are uniformly horrible, with failings across the board. Acidity, taste notes, legs, bouquet, body, you name it. Reds are worse than whites. Whites taste like they were fermented for ten minutes. - The York Reserve and Sula's Heritage wines are pretty decent. The reds go well with Indian food, without necessarily tasting like dessert wines. I'd avoid the rest.

If you have a friend in the Armed Forces who has access to a CSD canteen, I am told Sulas are available for close to Rs. 100 a bottle. Quite ridiculously cheap for nice stuff. I think I've mentioned it before but Grover's have a wine tasting tour and you can buy the wine there.
