Deepa Mohan [04/01/12 13:26 +0530]: Why put a question mark at the end of that phrase Suresh? And surely, the I don't often go out drinking and if I do, I don't pick a five star hotel bar if I can help it. There's also buying clothes for a trip to singapore or the states etc type purchases, where you can leave all the salwar kameez, saris etc behind with a clear conscience.

It is the police’s duty to protect law-abiding people from criminals, full stop. Officers who try to duck this responsibility by blaming short skirts and unladylike behaviour must be summarily removed from their positions, if India is ever to become a superpower. several quibbles. 1. India is not going to become a superpower if women start wearing more revealing dresses, so that was pointless rhetoric 2. That Andhra police officer loudly proclaimed I am an idiot. Asking a person who loudly proclaims I am an idiot to stop being an idiot is what this article is about. 3. Even if all women were to stop dressing provocatively how would the police deal with a woman - say a hoooker who deliberately dresses provocatively to attract customers? Rape her? Or look away and blame her provcative dress if she were to get raped? This question is too difficult to answer for Idiots. 4. If Indians were actually honest with themselves and did a proper survey of what is happening in ths country you will find that a significant percentage of menfolk think that a woman should be covered up and at home serving her husband. She should wear jasmine in her hair and never drink. And I heard this from a self-proclaimed Hindutva group. There is an elite India that is out of touch with the majority. The article is from that elite for the elite. The probem is not that the police officer is a self advertised idiot. The whole goddam country thinks this way. Blaming the idiot police officer is ignoring the elephant in the room. We are pretending that India is something that it isn't and hoping that it will become something that it won't. The police will never enforce what they don't believe. shiv

I was recently in chennai and went to a big mall where I saw a lot of really short skirts and such in store displays - and also on sale in large numbers inside the stores. But -- I actually did not come across a single person wearing these skirts. So my question is who actually wears these clothes -- the large variety on sale indicates there are buyers -- but where do they wear them to ... are there 'exclusive / elite' places that one must go to see these elusive skirt wearers ?
