[Simh] VAX and VMS books up for grabs

2018-05-30 Thread Bill Deegan
Greetings,

Anyone want a copy of:
* VAX/VMS Operation System Concepts
* Version 5.2 VAX/VMS Internals and Data Structures
* DECNET Phase V

I'm cleaning out my bookshelves and would rather get them to someone who
wants them than throw them in the trash.

Just pay cost of shipping and their yours.

Re: [Simh] CMake based build (was: Makefile)

2016-10-16 Thread Bill Deegan
I have more than 5 years experience with SCons and usually problems are
caused by not understanding how it works.

That said, CMake is popular.
I've used both, have more experience with SCons.
Didn't mean to derail the thread, but thought if cmake didn't run on alpha..

I'm the co-manager of the SCons project and would be willing to assist.

For the PAKs I just copy/pasted to get things going. That worked fine.
Bring it up in a text editor on host machine, select all. Then in your simh

[Simh] VAX/VMS 6.2 DECnet turned off, still resetting MAC address

2015-10-20 Thread Bill Deegan
Greetings,

I'm migrating a VMS 6.2 system from real hardware to simh VAX.
We're running on EC2 so DECnet's a no go.

We've disabled the DECnet startup on the system, but when I turn on tracing
I see:
DBG(42740138541)+> XQ ETH: writing dst: 02:41:0C:98:92:09 src:
AA:00:04:00:20:10 proto: 0x0800 len: 98 crc: B5981F43

Is there a way to enable the debugging before booting up the VAX?
Barring that is there a way to prevent simh catching the "setup packet" and
changing the SRC MAC address?

Re: [Simh] Running simh vax on amazon EC2

2015-07-09 Thread Bill Deegan
FYI:

set xq eth1
and then turn off decnet on the install vms system worked like a charm.

Amazon seems to be filtering telnet, so we moved the telnet to port 80 and
success!

For our current needs this will work!

Thanks to all.

 OK.

 Consider this:

 1) A standalone vax/vms system won’t usefully need to run DECnet or
 any cluster stuff.

 2) From what you describe you don’t really need to talk between the
simh VAX instance and the host centos system.

Given these, you can configure the VMS environment to ONLY have an IP
network stack and avoid DECnet. This will allow the MAC address of the
simulated NIC to retain its default value (as set in the simh configuration
file) rather than dynamically changing to a DECnet form MAC address.

You should then be able to set the simh configured MAC address to the same
MAC address as the centos system’s network interface you are using. Given
that, you only need to get an additional IP address for use on the
simulated system. I haven’t actually tried this, but it “should” work.

Migrating some applications from a physical vax.

Minimally be able to Telnet into the system from another system.
