It shouldn’t. But there seems to be a problem with export in macOS 13.1, but I
have no idea what it is, and I cannot check it myself.
So what do you actually see? Do you see the 3 options below the format popup,
or do you only get the popup?

Btw, of you would want to save all or multiple PDFs using the skim app, you
could do that using Apple script.

The text you get from skimnotes is generated when you save a PDF. It is not
generated by the skimnotes tool, unless it was not present (i.e. not saved by
Skim). Remember that your custom template is something only Skim app knows
about, the skimnotes tool knows nothing about that, m and does not have the
functionality to use it if it would.

Re: [Skim-app-users] Export only text notes?

2017-05-10 Thread Misha Velthuis
Thanks for the quick response. The templates work great. I run into one problem though. I am regularly using the skimnotes tool "skimbulk" to extract notes from all pdfs in a directory. I changed the code of skimbulk a bit so that it creates .rtf's instead of .skim notes (see attachment). Now, after modifying the default template "notesTemplate.rtf" (so that the built-in export option "notes to rtf" only produces text and anchored notes and no highlights etc.), I found out that skimbulk-skimnotes luckily does use that modified default option, but only for the pdf's that I recently modified (opened and saved). For the older pdf's it does not use the modified "notesTemplate.rtf" but seems to use the old one, producing .rtf files with all kinds of notes (highlights, line etc.).I checked if it helped to make skimbulk-skimnotes first replace the .skim files of every "old" pdf with new .skim files (and then make skimbulk-skimnotes produce .rtf's from the old pdf's) but that didn't make a difference. I als tried if it is just a matter of "date modified", using the "touch" command in the terminal to change the "date modified" of older pdfs. That also didn't work. The only thing that seems to work is opening and saving a pdf. Only after doing that, skimbulk-skimnotes uses the new, modified default "notesTemplate.rtf" (producing .rtf's with only text and anchored notes). It's of course not possible to do this for all pdf's... Do you maybe have another idea?MishaP.s. thanks for all the work and time!

That worked, thanks!

When exporting highlights to text, is there any way to prevent certain
phrases from getting concatenated together with no spaces between words? It
seems to happen about once per page.

Yes. Copy the default text template and edit it (remove the
$type.typeName/ tag). To install the template follow the Wiki.

You can take the default template, which is located at

Unfortunately, no. This is just about the information we get from the PDF
(or more precisely what PDFKit gives us from it.) And unfortunately PDF is
not a text format, but a graphics format.
