I don't think so; I have no reason to (I don't even make anything in
Python.)  I searched there, didn't find anything.

After saying the above, okay, I found I had some similar/fork package of
pysetuptools, that name started with 'd,' and supposedly was going to
become better than setuptools, but lately was removed from SBo. I wish
the people working on these newer languages would make up their mind. I
removed the similar/fork package, then was able to compile everything
that hadn't compiled in SBo.

It is now part of Slackware starting with 14.2, just called
python-setuptools. It is only at version 22.0.5, though.

python-setuptools 22.0.5 was released on 3 Jun 2016

It was added to slackware on
Jun 8 2016

Slackware 14.2 was released on

@David
Nothing wrong here, i think.
Maybe everything works if you use python-setuptools from stock slackware.

I'm building stuff with pysetuptools, but it seems the SlackBuild uses a
version almost two years old, 17.0, though building with it reports it
as 18.2. The latest is 36.2.7; looks like it's maybe a hundred minor
versions behind? Has it been abandoned?

Thanks for being patient (and the patch).

Regarding allmydata-tahoe, developers fixed version specifiers in
their Git repo, but there doesn't seem to be any versions released
with those fixes, so I extracted them into a patch (attached). It
works for me with setuptools 12.0.5, but I only installed
allmydata-tahoe and tried to run tahoe --version, so please test
it and see if everything works correctly.

allmydata-tahoe 1.10.1 is scheduled to be released soon (couple of
weeks at most). Compared to 1.10 this version will have more (direct
or indirect) dependencies and the adaptation of that code to PEP 440
is best documented at
https://tahoe-lafs.org/trac/tahoe-lafs/ticket/2354

According to the Slackware64 buildbot it's all fine, wrt PEP 440:
https://tahoe-lafs.org/buildbot-tahoe-lafs/builders/Markus%20slackware64%20stable/builds/43

I plan to check all deps for updates and run tests this weekend.

For other maintainers of packages depending on setuptools: if your
package won't build with latest setuptools, see if there's newer version
released. If there isn't, read PEP 440 version specifier section[*] and
try fixing it yourself, it's not very complicated. Although in most
cases I expect that everything will work as before.

I have been using setuptools 1.x for quite some time now and haven't
encountered any issues. Of course this is just an anecdotal evidence
and not a thorough test, but it seems to me that majority of the
packages depending on pysetuptools will most likely just work.
