Surely there's someone in Australia who can provide Linux support? How about IBM? Australia is (still) the arse end of the Earth when it comes to IT, my friend. [SLUG] Kernel compile for RH 7.0 (?Configfest material)
I'm getting a bit tired and worn. The need is to co-compile a kernel for Win4Lin (2.0) and a Tekram DC-315/u SCSI card to run a (Panasonic) burner. All from the lovely markets which I understand run every Sunday except Christmas/ New Year. System was built as a "workstation" from the RH 7.0 disk(s) (from Allambie Comp.) Previous try as "custom" created too many headaches. Also, previous re-compile of RH6.0 to the same SCSI hardware (on another machine - in use to send this) was so easy I expected the same. In general I had to RPM the kernel source (2.2.16-22) from the CD. Did so, but then considered this original issue is reputed to be insecure if not actually buggy, so downloaded the "fix" (2.2.17-14) from Red Hat. Installed the Win4Lin and Tekram patches and tried to compile. Encountered the problem compiling checksum.h (IIRC) so investigated and determined to need to bend the Makefile to specify kgcc under all circumstances. This gave me a kernel which would compile, but won't boot. In fact, it gets as far as "Now loading the kernel" and does a cold reset. As I figure it, this has nothing to do with the CPU type (dropped back all the way to i386), map file or modules (which I have not made yet). Decided on another tack - Assemble the raw 2.2.16-22 kernel and *then* add Win4Lin and the DC-315/U. In this case, I get undeclared somethings in "kstat_irqs" function in kernel_stat.h NOW, I have just noted searching on that latter include file name, a reference to glibc. The Win4Lin notes direct me to the need to update glibc before trying to install it in RH 7.0, and I have duly downloaded not the mentioned version glibc 2.1.94 which no longer exists, but 2.2.12 which replaces it on the mirror. As I understand it, glibc 2.1.94 is so far functional on the system and the 2.2.17-14 kernel at least compiled successfully. Before I RPM the upgrades and try yet again on this last tack, perhaps someone might be able to explain any obvious clues here. What is necessary, what is safe, what have I omitted (granted that I made some other minor/ obvious patches here and there in the process, which I can't quite recall now)? -- Cheers, Paul B. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://slug.org.au/lists/listinfo/slug

[SLUG] Suse 7.1 Live - good for future Installfests ?
Yesterday I bought the April edition of Linux Format, with Suse 7.1 Live on the cover CD. This distro boots and runs from the CD after installing 4 files (100mb reqd) into the root directory of your Windows C: drive. I got it to run perfectly on the second attempt, booting from my SCSI CDRW, after realising that the hardware detection was hanging whilst checking my SCSI Orb drive (had to insert a disk - not the first time with this problem with Orb). Thought that this distro was worth mentioning to SLUG, as it allows anybody to try linux without any need to partition Hard Drives etc, and there's not really much that you can stuff up. The distro even includes the setup of a personal firewall. Uninstall only requires deleting 4 "suse" files from C:\ Only problem is inability to update or install programs. I'd like to "ghost" the CD to an Orb drive, with a second partition to allow for installatio of other programs, downlads etc. Can somebody please advise how to copy the CD image to another drive? Thanks Bill [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Second attempt? What went wrong the first time? Ahhh, it hung. Forget I asked. :-) Are Orb drives always that finicky about stuff like that? My trusty Zip drive (which refuses to eject disks, so i have rip them out) gets probed with no disk and happily returns its hardware type. Only problem is inability to update or install programs. What's the problem? You don't know how, or what? I'd like to "ghost" the CD to an Orb drive, with a second partition to allow for installatio of other programs, downlads etc. The simplest way i can think of is this: Figure out which device your CD-ROM is, if it's SCSI it will probably be /dev/scd0. Next, figure out which device your Orb drive is, it's probably /dev/sd[a..g]. Put a disk in the Orb, and run the following: dd if=/dev/scd0 of=/dev/sd[what you found the Orb was] That command just does a data dump directly from the CD to the Orb, nice and simple (if you understand Unix devices of course. :-) Thanks Bill [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Steve "I'm a sysadmin because I couldn't beat a blind monkey in a coding contest." --Me -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://slug.org.au/lists/listinfo/slug
